Sports / Benefits Of Playing Chess by metromediaboss: 3:34pm On Jun 12, 2017
The game of chess is often described as problem solving at its finest. It’s a game that requires strategic thinking, creativity, determination and even the ability to properly analyze body language. It’s a game that exercises the mind and is highly beneficial to mental and intellectual development. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 5 surprising benefits of playing chess.

It Exercises Both Sides of the Brain

Studies have shown that playing chess involves the use of the brain’s left hemisphere (which deals with object recognition) and the brain’s right hemisphere (which deals with pattern recognition). Mainly because of the rules and techniques of the chess game, you end up effectively exercising and developing both sides of your brain over time.

Improves Thinking and Problem Solving Skills

Especially in children, learning and playing chess helps to significantly improve thinking, problem-solving and reading skills. The game’s complexity and the fact that problem-solving is foundational for tackling this complexity and winning the game, eventually helps to improve and develop the brain’s capacity and capability for thinking and problem solving overtime.

Improves the Brain’s Performance

Learning and playing a game like chess actually helps to stimulate the growth of dendrites (an extension of a nerve cell that conducts signals from the neuron cells in your brain to the neuron they are attached to). The growth of these dendrites in turn helps increase the speed and improves the quality of neural communications throughout the brain. This increased processing power ultimately improves the brain’s performance.

It Helps Creativity

Mainly because playing chess exercises the right side of brain, it helps to enhance creativity and originality. The game greatly enhances creative abilities as it makes the player consider, analyze and prioritize a wide variety of possibilities. Playing chess contributes significantly to growth and development in creative thinking.

It Improves Memory

The rules of the game that have to be remembered, alongside the memory recall needed to avoid mistakes and remember the specific opponent’s playing style, contribute to the memory improvement and optimization that playing chess offers. Playing chess largely helps to enhance memory performance and recall.

Fashion / Appearance Pitfalls That Turns People Off by metromediaboss: 9:47am On Jun 09, 2017
You sweat a lot

Your cloth's underarm is ridden in sweat. It is the same with your face. This is how you appear or report to work daily. Do you think anyone will talk to with your sweaty underarm? Deal with it by using an armpit deodorant and put your handkerchief into good use by wiping your face.

Your belt and shoe does not match

This is a simplistic fashion mistake some guys make. It is unforgivable. Your belt must match your shoe!
Yellow teeth

Poor dental hygiene can also turn people off. Find time to get your teeth cleaned by booking an appointment with your dentist. Imagine laughing or smiling and your teeth are sparkling white!

Your skin is dry

It only takes several minutes for you to apply cream to your skin. However, some persons still don't bother about it. Henceforth, try and keep your skin moist.

Phones / Tips To Check Social Media Envy by metromediaboss: 9:30am On Jun 09, 2017
Know that you may not be looking at reality

You see a girl on Instagram with all the curves. However, when you eventually meet her, you are utterly disappointed. Social media can make people be whatever they want to be even if they are not. It is a false and fake life. There is a big difference between their social media life and their real life.

Identify and plug triggers

Which picture (s) do you look at that makes you jealous or envious? Identify that person (s) and perhaps block them from your timeline. But the question is how many people do you want to block? Their activities are in your face.

Appreciate yourself

Sometimes it is better to focus on your own blessings and appreciate yourself. This should always be at the back of your mind when the envy or thoughts slowly creep in.

Remember the person’s intent

Sometimes the intent of a post is just to show off. It is bragging! They display the stupendous amount they spend at clubs and their good looking wardrobe. People who are discerning will simply ignore them.

Be genuinely happy for them

There are times you feel that someone is honest in their post and you know they are just sharing what makes them happy. You can drop a nice comment for them. This will give you a wonderful feeling.

Stop the comparison

There is no need to assess or judge yourself based on what you see on social media. Be self-aware so that when the comparison thoughts pop up in your mind, you should kill it immediately. Do not allow it to go viral. If it does, you will just become moody for no justifiable reason.

Take a social media break

This may be very difficult. However, take a break if you cannot deal with the jealousy. Alternatively, cut the hours you spend on travelling from one social media account to another.

Politics / PHOTOS: UN Officials Visit Gov. Wike by metromediaboss: 6:21pm On Jun 08, 2017
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has called on the leadership of the United Nations to prevail on the Federal Government to implement the clean up of Ogoni-land, which was flagged off last year.

Speaking at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Thursday when he granted audience to the United Nations Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr Edward Kallon, the governor regretted that nothing has so far been done on the Ogoni clean up.

He said that large scale environmental pollution in different parts of the state leads to environmental degradation, which negatively affects the sources of livelihood of the people.

He said the clean up of Ogoni land should not be politicised, as it dwells directly on the development of the area.

The governor said: "Yesterday in the Senate, somebody said that the Federal Government has not done anything as far as Ogoni clean up is concerned. When we were saying it, they said we were playing politics. But now, it has dawned on them that nothing is being done. So, we urge you to intervene.

"Part of the problem we are having today is because of the lack of attention by the Federal Government when it has to do with Rivers State. We will provide you with Helicopter to see what we are talking about. Don't only read it on papers. You will really pity us. "

Speaking further, Governor Wike said: "The Federal Government has taken our oil and our environment has been degraded. Nothing seems to be done.

"We urge you on your own part as the United Nations to impress on the Federal Government that this clean up is very serious. Let it not be a political issue. We should not play politics with the lives of the people".

The governor also called on the United Nations to partner with the Rivers State Government in the area of commercial agriculture.

He said because of the volatile nature of oil prices, investments in commercial agriculture will help create jobs for unemployed youths. Governor Wike urged the United Nations to provide a link for investors in commercial agriculture to come to the state, adding that his administration will provide incentives such as access to land and certificate of occupancy.

While soliciting for partnership in the area of environmental sanitation, Governor Wike declared that his administration places premium on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

He informed the United Nations that his administration has improved security through the diligent implementation of the State Amnesty programme.

Governor Wike said that the State Government is working with relevant agencies to improve human rights and decongest the prisons.

Earlier, the United Nations Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr Edward Kallon lauded the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike for his infrastructural development, which has improved the

living condition of the people.

He said the United Nations will continue to mobilise support for the development of Rivers State. He assured that the United Nations will partner with the Rivers State Government in the area of agriculture as a tool of employment generation and empowerment.

The UN Chief added that partnership will be developed with the Rivers State Government in the areas of Sustainable Development Goals, improvement of security, environmental sanitation, promotion of human rights and prisons decongestion.

Simeon Nwakaudu,

Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor, Electronic Media.

Politics / FG Condemns Central London Terrorist Attack by metromediaboss: 6:56pm On Jun 04, 2017
The Federal Government on Sunday condemned the deadly terrorist attacks on Central London Bridge and the Borough market in “the strongest terms” and voiced its deep condolence to the relatives and victims of the attack.

Seven people died in the attack in central London on Saturday night and 48 were injured.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry in a statement by its Spokesperson, Dr Clement Aduku, said: “the government and people of Nigeria stand with the government and people of Great Britain in the face of continued terrorist attacks on innocent victims.

“Our thoughts, sympathy and prayers are with those affected in these latest multiple terrorist attacks and their families,” the ministry stated

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that assailants drove a van into pedestrians at high speed on London Bridge on Saturday night before stabbing revellers on nearby streets.

Police said armed officers shot dead all three attackers within minutes of receiving reports of the terrorist attack unfolding in central London.

The three men were wearing suicide bomb vests that were later confirmed to be fakes.

Cressida Dick, the Metropolitan police commissioner, said on Sunday morning the incident was under control. “We believe there were three attackers and we believe they are dead,” she said

Police also confirmed the arrest of 12 people in the Barking district of east London in connection with the attack and raids were continuing there.

Politics / Naval Officers Burn 3 Policemen In Calabar by metromediaboss: 4:44pm On May 31, 2017
Three policemen were reportedly burnt to death on Tuesday, following a clash between Policemen and some officers of Nigerian Navy in Calabar, the Cross River state capital.

The naval officers allegedly set the deceased ablaze in their station during the fight.

The misunderstanding between the two parties had started at a police checkpoint.

Sources said the unrest was a continuation of an initial skirmish between a police traffic officer and a naval officer at a traffic light near the Calabar Stadium along the Airport Road on Tuesday afternoon.

“Some naval officers ran the red light and police traffic officers intervened, but rather than listen, they descended on the policemen and beat them up,” a witness said. “This was around 5 p.m.”

“Police officers now called for back up and and the Navy also called for reinforcement and they took over the road leading to the airport.

“But the Navy Commander and police commissioner in the state intervened and the two sides backed down,” the witness said.

“However, around 8:00 p.m., when everyone thought the matter had been resolved, naval officers descended on Akim Police Station and started shooting and burnt down the facility.

“We confirmed three bodies but we feared there are more,” the witness said.

The witness also accused the naval officers of blocking fire fighters from extinguishing the inferno set at the police station.

Politics / EFCC Re-arraigns Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed For N1.2bn Fraud by metromediaboss: 3:43pm On May 30, 2017
Shamsudeen Bala, son of a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Bala Mohammed, was on May 30, 2017 re-arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

He was re-arraigned along with four companies – Bird Trust Agro Allied Limited, Intertrans Global Logistic Limited, Diakin Telecommunications Limited and Bal-Vac Mining Nigeria Limited, on an amended 15-count charge, bordering on money laundering.
The amendment, which was effected in counts 10 to 15, according to prosecution counsel, Ben Ikani, “was to accommodate new information” in the alleged charge brought against them.

In one of the amended counts, the prosecution alleged that Bala knowingly failed to declare “the sum of £472.26 standing to your credit domiciled at Standard Chartered Bank Plc, an offence contrary to section 27 (1) of the EFCC Act 2004”.

He was also alleged to have deliberately concealed the sum of $32,512.44 and €17.45 in the same bank but with different account numbers, while declaring his assets, an offence contrary to the EFCC Act, and punishable by same. He also allegedly “without going through a financial institution made cash payment of N200 million only to Faruk Saleh at Abuja as payment for purchase of House 2A, No 7 Gana Street, Maitama, Abuja, which exceeded the statutory limit”, an offence contrary to the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 as amended in 2012.

He pleaded “not guilty” to the charges when they were read to him.
His counsel, Chris Uche, SAN thereafter urged the court to allow him continue to enjoy the bail earlier granted to him on February 3, 2017 two days after he was first arraigned.
Uche, further requested for time to study the amended charge dated May 25, 2017, which he said he was “only being served” by the prosecution.

Ikani did not oppose his application for bail.
Justice Dimgba has adjourned to June 26, 2017 for “continuation of hearing”

Politics / 8 Scandals Involving State Governors In Nigeria by metromediaboss: 9:21am On May 29, 2017
Well, scandals are not new in Nigeria's political space. They are some of the things that colour the polity, much more, exposes the hidden secrets of those in the corridors of power. Over the past months, and two years since the inception of President Muhammadu Buhari's administration, some state governors have been soiled in one scandal or the other. While some of them denied it, others did not. However it is, these scandals include:

1. Kogi – Voting: Latest being heard of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state is his battle with Nigeria's electoral body, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) accusing him of registering twice for Permanent Voter Card, and the commission cancelling his second and illegal registration. The governor's action has drawn the ire of both his party, APC and controversial Senator, Dino Melaye. Melaye, with them calling for the governor's resignation

2. Delta – Bailout Fund to Mistress: January 2017, Delta governor, Okowa was soiled in a scandal involving bail out funds. Reports emanated that a governor is under probe after the sum of $10 million he diverted from the bailout funds allocated to his state was hijacked by his mistress. The governor was said to have commissioned his mistress to help him launder the said sum only for the latter to refuse to remit it in the slush accounts the governor provided. The money was traced to a bank in the United States. Though his name was not mentioned in the report, he, after some days debunked the widespread report that he was the South South governor said to have been swindled out of $10 million by a US based actress, Georgina Onuoha.

3. Zamfara – Used Paris Fund for hotel: Zamfara state governor, Yari has been in the news lately. Recently, anti-graft agency, EFCC, discovered a hotel being contructed by him with $3million from the London-Paris Club loan refund. Yari, who is the chairman of the Governor’s Forum, allegedly diverted N19billion reportedly meant for “consultants” from the Paris club loan refund.

The money had been illegally paid into the account of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) by Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Yari, reports say, sneaked into Aso Rock Presidential Villa in search of soft-landing. He was said to have offered to refund the balance of $2.5 million quietly to the EFCC without being further investigated, given that one of the proxies used to launder the funds had already surrendered $500,000 to the anti-graft agency.

4. Ajimobi – Constituted Authority: Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state came under heavy criticisms over his 'constituted authority' statement few months ago. The reaction of the governor was when he addressed students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso who stormed his office to protest the 8-month closure of their school. In a show of power, the governor insulted the students, boasted that as the governor of the state, he is the constituted authority and should be respected even though he does not pay salaries.

5. Lagos – Sack of Lagos Chaplain: Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is not having a good time with the media over the recent sack of Lagos Chaplain. The chaplain was sacked for disrespecting Governor Ambode's wife during anointing service. Mrs Ambode had gone for the annointing service, but was infuriated because she was not recognised first before others for the anointing session.

6. Rivers – Threatened INEC official on phone: Controversial Rivers state governor, Nyesome Wike was late December 2016 involved in a mess of allegedly threatening to kill compromised INEC official during Rivers Re-run elections. The audio recording of the threat was leaked by Sahara Reporters. But the Rivers state government denied the audio tape, saying it's a fabricated evidence.

7. Katsina – Coffin: Nigerians came after Governor of Katsina state, Aminu Bello Masari for reportedly buying 3,000 coffins and distributed them to the mosques in the state. The coffins were allagedly bought at N40,000 according to a blogger, Jamil Maba. The blogger queried the governor's move especially as he owed workers in the state many months salaries.

8. Ortom – Wheelbarrow: Reports emerged from Benue state recently, saying that Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state, as part of his goodwill for the youths of the state, decided to empower them with wheelbarrows, with the inscription ''Governor Ortom For You''. The governor reacted, saying his consent was not sought, and did not give approval for anyone to inscribe his name on the wheelbarrows. Consequently, the governor queried the Executive Secretary of SEMA to explain why such action was taken by his office

Politics / IPOB, MOSSOB Members Arrested In Ebonyi by metromediaboss: 12:28pm On May 27, 2017
The Police in Ebonyi on Saturday confirmed the arrest of some members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in various part of the state for alleged unlawful sensitisation programme.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Jude Madu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday that the arrested suspects also included members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

Madu said that the suspects were arrested for unlawfully sensitising the public to stay at home on May 30, in observance of the group anniversary.

“They would be charged to court and the command would ensure that they are duly prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

“IPOB and MASSOB are illegal groups and did not get permission from the police to embark on such exercise which threatens the peace and security of the state.

“The command with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Mr Titus Lamorde, has commenced intensive sensitisation of the populace to disregard the sit-at-home directive and go about their lawful businesses,” he said.

Madu warned members of the group not to carry out outlawed activities within the state before, during and after May 30, as the full weight of the law would be brought on any defaulter.

“Any person or group found culpable would be arrested and duly prosecuted as the groups’ activities amount to mutiny or fighting a sitting and legally recognised government.

“IPOB and MASSOB are techniques developed by some individuals to gain public interest and recognition as the former is even a breakaway organ of the latter.

“These groups have not provided amenities or other forms of social security for the people they are directing to stay at home; it shows that their intentions are not sincere and must be rejected by all,” he said.

He advised the groups that not everybody was interested in issues concerning secession as people still remember the horrors of the civil war and other upheavals in the country after then.

According to him, they should realise that most people are not interested in their preaching, therefore, they should not force anybody to be involved in their illegal and unlawful practices.
