The Proprietress of God’s Orphanage Home, in Benin, Edo State, Mrs. Kehinde Blessing Imarhiagbe, has been paraded by the police, for complicity in the alleged theft of a four-year-old-baby girl.

The victim was said to have been stolen by a ma somewhere in Lagos and taken to the suspect’s orphanage located along Siluko Road, in Benin.

Speaking to journalisits while parading Mrs. Imarhiagbe, the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Babatunde Kokumo, described the activity of the suspect as unwholesome, adding that the stolen girl was “found at the orphanage under questionable circumstances.”

Speaking in her defense, Mrs. Imarhiagbe, said the baby was brought to her Orphanage home by a man she identified simply as Emeka, who allegedly claimed to be the father of the child, adding that he had lost the mother.

The orphanage proprietress who said since she did not suspect any foul play, did not bother to probe the true identity of the baby, especially when Emeka was visiting her orphanage home every week.

She however said she was surprised to received a phone call while she was attending a church programme in Sapele, Delta State, that the police was looking for her in connection with a child allegedly stolen in Lagos.

She said on arriving Benin, she surrendered herself to the police and that since her arrest all efforts to reach Emeka have not been successful as Emeka has since switched off his phone.

PoliticsPHOTOS: FG Releases List Of 69 Ongoing Road, Bridge Projects In South East by metronaija2(op): 4:20pm On Aug 27, 2018
The Federal Government has released the list of the 69 ongoing road and bridge projects in the South-east.

In a statement in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said though the contracts for many of the roads were awarded before the advent of this Administration, they were either poorly funded or not funded at all, hence work on the roads has lingered.

The Minister said the 69 roads and bridges, which are spread across the five states in the South-east, are now in different stages of completion, thanks to the funding sourced by the present Administration from budgetary allocations, the Sukuk Bond and the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund.

He said the government is also looking into the possibility of using a part of the recovered looted funds to fund the development of infrastructure across the country.

While announcing the projects, which include the rehabilitation of the existing Niger Bridge as well as the construction of the 2nd Niger Bridge last week, Alhaji Mohammed promised to publish the full list of the roads and bridges, as well as give a state-by-state breakdown of the total figure.

PoliticsCAN Condemns Killings Of Two Clerics In Abuja, Kaduna by metronaija2(op): 3:55pm On Aug 22, 2018
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Wednesday condoled with the leaderships of the Roman Catholic Church and the Nigerian Baptist Convention over the demise of the two clerics.

The President, Rev Samson Ayokunle in a statement signed by Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, Special Assistant, Media and Communications to the CAN president, in Abuja condemned their killings.

Ayokunle said the clerics were killed by some unknown gunmen in Abuja and Kaduna State.

He added that the late Rev. Fr. Michael Akawu, was reportedly shot dead by identified gunmen in Gwagwalada, Abuja, while shopping on Aug. 18.

“Few hours later, on Sunday, August 19, at about 1.00 a.m, according to informed sources, some hoodlums suspected to be Fulani terrorists attacked Nasara Baptist Church in Guguwa near Rigasa in Kaduna.

“The suspected terrorists shot dead Rev. Hosea Akuchi and took away his wife, Mrs Talatu Akuchi.

“Her whereabouts remain unknown and the criminals have demanded for the sum of five million naira for her release,” he said.

Ayokunle said that Akawu, was ordained as priest on Feb. 4, 2017 by the Archbishop of Abuja, the Most Revd. John Cardinal Onayeikan and was the first FCT indigenous Catholic priest to be ordained.

The CAN president prayed to God to comfort and console the Roman Catholic Church in Nigeria and the Nigerian Baptist Convention, the churches where they were serving with their immediate families.

He, however, called on the Nigeria Police and other relevant security agencies to do whatever it takes to bring the culprits to book and rescue the widow of the late Rev. Akuchi as soon as practicable.

“We once again call on our security agencies to be more proactive and invest more on intelligence gathering with a view to preventing many of these crimes that are being committed before their watches undetected,” he stressed.

The cleric noted with pains and disappointment the state of insecurity across the country, adding that the Federal Government should work hard to improve security in the country.

According to him, nowhere is safe and secured, as terrorists, rampaging Fulani herdsmen, killer bandits, armed robbers, kidnappers and other hoodlums were operating unchecked.

He said that the security agencies seemed busy with elections and forgot that leaders were elected to rule over the living souls.

“Nigeria’s security situation is reprehensible, unacceptable and condemnable. We once again call on President Muhammadu Buhari to work on the security system of the country.

“Let there be a visible improvement in our security system, as the governed are not satisfied with their performances in ensuring security of lives and property.

The CAN president again called on the Police to arrest all assailants that were responsible for these evil acts.

“Enough of the senseless killings, these killings must stop in the country,’’ he warned.

PoliticsWhy Buhari Administration’s Focus Is On Common Man – Osinbajo by metronaija2(op): 9:23am On Aug 22, 2018
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has said that the Buhari administration will continue to focus on the common man and taking Nigerians out of poverty through its social investment programmes, while calling for unity among all Nigerians.

Prof. Osinbajo said this during a townhall meeting on Tuesday in Bariga/Somolu LCDA in Lagos State to felicitate with Lagosians on the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

The Vice President, who addressed a gathering comprising APC chieftains in the state, youth groups, state government officials and the LCDA Chairmen of Somolu and Bariga, noted that the administration’s National Social Investment Programmes (N-SIP) were geared towards improving the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.

“The President focus has always been on the common man. So, when we came, we decided on a few things to tackle youth unemployment. First, the N-Power programme to engage as many young people who are graduates as possible. We started with 200,000, and just this month, we have employed another 300,000. So, in our N-Power programme, we have 500,000 young graduates who are employed in the programme. Now every local government in Nigeria has N-Power graduate.”

Prof. Osinbajo further stated that the Buhari administration has been able to embark on the completion of more infrastructure projects and achieve more with less funds because of President’s Buhari’s honesty and the seriousness of the administration to improve the country’s fortunes.

He said, “In the past four years of the previous administration, over US$393 billion was earned in oil proceeds alone. In the past three years, we have earned US$94 billion, look at the difference. And the reasons are very straightforward. The price of oil was about half of what it used to be. But with the same $94 billion, we have been able to do far more.

“When we got into office, 24 states had not paid salaries for over six months and we ensured that these salaries were paid. And President Buhari said then, “Look, I have been a salary earner all my life, I have never done any business; the only thing I ever done is government work, either as a soldier or as head of government. I cannot imagine how anybody can go to sleep as a governor without paying the salaries of his workers.” So, we made sure that we paid salaries and we have done so many other things.

“In investments, look at the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway; for almost 12 years, with all that money, it was never done. Now we have set about and we are doing it, we will complete it. Also, the Lagos-Kano railway project, so many of us know that we are moving towards Ibadan now. And we are going to complete it.

The Vice President further said the Buhari administration will continue to support petty traders and small businesses to ensure that more Nigerians are taken out of poverty.

He said, “The other thing we have done is GEEP (Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme), a micro-credit scheme for market women and others. We are doing one now for petty traders that is called TraderMoni. We have done it in Lagos we are going to do at least 100,000 in Lagos and 2 million across the country. The traders here in Bariga must benefit from it. We also have the one for people far bigger than that which is called GEEP.

“I want to emphasize that everything we are doing, our focus, first of all, is to ensure that people are taken out of poverty. Our country is a very big; over 200 million people, many young people coming out everyday. Aside from that, we also want to ensure that anybody who is doing anything at all, who is trading, artisans, mechanics; we are able to support them.

The reason is that when you look at the way government operates in the past; when you look at the government budget, it focuses on the middle-class, those who have industries and manufacturing plants, and those kinds of people. But the majority are at a very low level, doing little things. Those are the people that we must first of all (focus on), so that the poorest are able to do better. If the poorest do better, it would be better for all of us.”

CrimePHOTOS: Gunrunner, Policeman, Soldier, 4 Fulani Militiamen Arrested by metronaija2(op): 10:49pm On Aug 20, 2018
A Special security force coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser(ONSA) has arrested three suspects, including a soldier and a policeman over criminal activities , including fuelling recent herdsmen/farmers clashes in parts of the Middle Belt.
Two of the suspects, Ahmed Sani, and one Corporal Ibrahim Idris, were apprehended in Jos by the special force which included military personnel, after being caught with various firearms and ammunition.
Sani, reputed in security circles to be a notorious armed robber, kidnapper and assassin, was arrested in an operation in conjunction with the Special Task Force (STF) on July 21, 2018; while Idris, a soldier residing in Maxwell Khobe Barracks, Rukuba, Jos, Plateau State, was arrested on June 27, 2018.
Security sources told NAN that Sani, also notoriously known as ‘Sani Gunrunner’, trades in various calibre of firearms and ammunition almost on a daily basis.
“Sani is one of the brains behind the feud between the Fulanis and other ethnic group in the Middle Belt. This is owing to the constant supply of arms and ammunition he receives owing to his close relationship with Idris”, a reliable security source told our reporter.

The source further revealed that information obtained during Sani’s interrogation led to the arrest of a police officer, one Sergeant Zakaria, attached to the Police Counter Terrorism Unit in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The NPF personnel was arrested in a sting operation while in the process of supplying 400 rounds of ammunition to Sani who was already in custody.
“Sani’s confession also helped identify one Suleiman who is a detainee in Jos Prison. On interrogation, Suleiman confessed that he was a gunrunner before his remand in prison custody.
He also confessed to facilitating the sale of arms and ammunition while still in prison.
Sani and Suleiman are currently assisting security forces with information that can lead to the arrest of other syndicate members,” the source said.
In the same vein, one Ahmadu, a Fulani militia commander was arrested on July 16, 2018, at Barkin Ladi, Jos.
According to sources, the interrogation of Ahmadu led to the arrest of three other Fulani militiamen.
The army is conducting further interrogation of all the suspects.
The Office of the NSA declined to comment on these arrests, but it was learnt that the presidency has been briefed.
Laolu Akande, senior special assistant to the Vice President confirmed on Wednesday that such briefing had indeed been made.

Politics13 APC Leaders, Senatorial Aspirant Defect To ADP In Osun by metronaija2(op): 1:04pm On Aug 19, 2018
The gale of defection rocking the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in Osun State took another dimension on Saturday when 13 elders of the party and a senatorial aspirant, Prince Dotun Babayemi, dumped the party for Action Democratic Congress (ADP) in Gbongan community of Ayedaade Local Government Area of the state.

The list of the defectors include an aspirant for Osun West Senatorial District, Prince Dotun Babayemi, alongside members of the APC Elders Caucus: Colonel Olagoke David (retd); Chief Bayo Ola; Alhaji Abbas Adekunle; Alhaji Demola Jekayinfa; Aduke Raji; Dr Dotun Oyeleke; Adisa Balogun; Alade Alimi; Korede Lawal; Biyi Olaboye, as well as members of the State Working Committee (SWC), local government and ward executives.

Receiving the defectors into the fold of the ADP at Oke Church area of Gbongan, the party’s gubernatorial candidate in the forthcoming September 22 governorship poll, Chief Moshood Adeoti, described APC as a party characterised by gross impunity and nepotism.

He said: “I built the structure of Osun APC, but the leadership style of Aregbesola, who I trusted, caused me to leave the party because of his anointed candidate, Gboyega Oyetola. APC is synonymous with nepotism and impunity. This is caused by Aregbesola’s defiant attitude and other decision makers in the party.

“The elders of the All Progressives Congress conceded that the Osun West should produce next governor under our party, but Aregbesola insisted on Gboyega Oyetola. Chief Bisi Akande and other council leaders had reiterated that the ticket should be zoned to the West. Aregbesola and other decision makers of the party insisted that Osun Central should produce the governor shoving myself, Speaker House of Assembly, Mr. Najeem Salam and Peter Babalola aside.

“The anointed candidate of APC has never been part of government until the present one. I managed the structure of the party and also part of Aregbesola’s cabinet for over seven and a half years”, Adeoti stated.

But, reacting to Adeoti’s claim, the director of publicity, research and strategy of the APC in Osun, Mr Kunle Oyatomi, said though the defectors have the constitutional rights to move to any party, their actions were blinded by desperate ambition.

He posited that: “as regards Dotun Babayemi, he came to APC to achieve an ambition of becoming a senator. There is nothing wrong in having an ambition to become anything. In political system and party structure, there are many positions that you can fight for, even the ones you don’t fight for, you can be elected to have. Even, outside Osun State, you can be given other position by the party. At least, we are controlling the national government.

“I am not God, but whatever we have to do, you have to think of where you are going. Can ADP make him a senator? He wanted to be senator; the election into the National Assembly has not come. If you are not a senator, you can be made ambassador; they can pick you to become a minister. We are in control of the federal government. I wonder why people think that once you don’t have this, you can just jump out of the house, which you claimed to have built with other people”.

“Nobody is denying that Adeoti contributed to the structure of the party in the state, but because of an ambition to become something, you don’t just jump out of the party. Governorship seat is one and there were 17 of them that contested and once somebody become the candidate, others must team up with him. They signed paper initially when they were showing interest to contest that they would team up with whoever wins.

“I don’t use to engage in homily to those who have made up their minds. There is nothing like impunity in APC. They just wanted to say something because they want to justify their leaving. Where is the impunity in the last seven years when Adeoti was the SSG? He started as the chairman of the party in local government, then he became the state chairman of then Action Congress (AC) before he metamorphosed into SSG for almost eight years. There was no impunity at that time”, Oyatomi remarked.

CelebritiesLiz Anjorin Breaks Silence On Fight With Ronke Oshodi-oke by metronaija2(op): 12:55pm On Aug 19, 2018
couple o weeks ago actress Ronke Oshodi Oke and Liz Anjorin got into a social media war which saw Ronke calling some celebrities out fr always showing off on social media.

The post got Anjorin angry who in turn lashed out at Ronke calling her all sorts.

Addressing the issue in an interview with Punchng, she said;

“It is not only in the Yoruba movie industry that women fight one another. If you go to another industry or country, the same thing happens. Wherever women are gathered, there will be evil. Once you see three or five ladies, next thing that comes up is fight and the major cause is always inferiority complex. If you don’t carry them along, they will tag you a bad person. If you carry them along in all you do, they will expose and shame you. As a woman, you have to just settle for one side.”

On if the have settled their issue, Anjorin said;

She added, “The problem with Nigerians is that we don’t celebrate people. If you want to write bad stories about me, you should celebrate me too. I know you are calling me to talk about my fight with Ronke. If you buy a car and see the need to show it to the public, is that a sin? I don’t have any fight with anyone. It is a message and the person I sent the message to received it. I am not even fighting for only me but others too. At least, we should behave in a way that people will stop seeing Yoruba actors as poor people.”

PropertiesAbuja Building Collapse: NEMA Calls Off Operation, Confirms 1 Dead, 6 Injured by metronaija2(op): 6:04pm On Aug 18, 2018
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has officially called off the Search and Rescue Operations at the site of the collapsed building in Jabi, Abuja, as it confirmed one person dead and six injured.

Mr Mustapha Maihaja made the official confirmation on Saturday in Abuja to clarify the conflicting figures on the numbers of death and those injured from the unfortunate incident.

Maihaja officially called off the rescue operation after the Search and Rescue team confirmed that there was no remaining body buried under the rubbles of the collapsed building.

He said that one of the six injured persons was in critical condition and was receiving adequate medical attention.

Maihaja said that professionals were deployed to the scene, trained personnel and facilities were also mobilized to ensure a thorough job.

“The incidence happened unannounced, the FCT Emergency Management Agency that is responsible responded promptly.

“ All other stakeholders brought their support to assist them and a good work has been done to rescue those that were trapped.

“It is an uncompleted building that was abandoned for a long time and I was made to understand that there were no people living there, only the illegal occupants were there.

“Seven people were brought out, one was certified dead, one severely wounded among those injured

“This is a professional job, professionals were deployed here. They professionally combed the whole site and they could not find any other than what they were able to get.

“ I think when a professional speak we should respect their opinion,’’ Maihaja said.

Those injured were immediately rushed to the Gwarinpa General Hospital for treatment after which they were referred to Zankli Hospital, Jabi.

The corpse of the victim has, however, been deposited at the Asokoro General Hospital.

To avoid reoccurrences of such unfortunate incidences, some stakeholders have called for the need for professionalism and proper inspection of buildings under constructions by the relevant agencies.

Speaking on the issue, Mr Agboola Abolade of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), called for the need to engage professionals in construction to avoid unfortunate incidences as a collapse.

He explained that from the inspection on the site it was very likely that the kind of concrete mix that was used in constructing must have been below the standard specified in the design.

“By looking at the nature of the rubbles we have here, you can see that it is likely that the kind of concrete mix used was below the standard.

“If the mix was done properly we should have had a partial collapse.

“ Even if the foundation gave way, other parts of the building could have been standing.

“Normally, since the building has been abandoned for a long time the concrete was supposed to get stronger over the years due to the incurring process of water and air,’’ Abolade said.

PoliticsBuhari Mourns Kofi Annan by metronaija2(op): 2:30pm On Aug 18, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the government and people of Ghana over the passing of former United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Kofi Annan, in the early hours of Saturday 18th August, 2018.

President Buhari, who called President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana from London, said all Nigerians and ECOWAS member countries share in the deep loss, considering the strategic influence of the former scribe in global affairs and his vision for the repositioning of the West Coast and Africa.

As the first elected staff of the United Nations to lead the world organisation and first African to win the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with the United Nations, the President noted that Annan’s humility, nobility and love for humanity set him apart for global greatness, achieving recognition and commendation for the reform of the United Nations' bureaucracy and multiple interventions to bring peace to the world.

President Buhari said Annan’s origin and home will always be traced to Ghana, but his exceptional leadership roles, humanitarian spirit and contributions to global peace and development will remain indelible in the history of the entire world, especially the efforts to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa and launch of the UN Global Compact.

The President sent condolences to the wife of the diplomat, Nane Maria Annan and his family members, staff of the United Nations and the global organisations he was heading, like The Elders, which was founded by Nelson Mandela.

President Buhari prays that the almighty God will comfort his family and all his loved ones.

HealthLassa Fever Kills 2 People In FCT by metronaija2(op): 6:50pm On Apr 18, 2018
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Wednesday said two of the three confirmed cases of Lassa fever died within three months in the territory.

Dr Humphrey Okoroukwu, the Director of Public Health in Health and Human Services Secretariat in FCT disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Okoroukwu said that 38 suspected cases were reported and investigated; three confirmed, while two deaths were recorded.

He explained that the only case of Lassa fever reported in Abuja Municipal Area Council in March eventually died.

The director said that the remaining victim in FCTA, who has been under surveillance was discharged having exited the incubation period.

Okoroukwu urged the residents not to panic over the development; rather, they should take their personal and environmental hygiene seriously.

He further urged residents to imbibe regular washing of hands, keep their environment clean and dispose their domestic waste to avoid rats.

He advised residents to always visit hospitals to get adequate medical attention, “even if they have an ordinary fever,’’ adding, “fever is a symptom of disease.’’
