A former Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Mr Moshood Salvador on Sunday said he did his best to reposition the opposition party for greatness while he was chairman. Salvador, now a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the claim in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. NAN reports the ex-PDP chairman had on Aug.27 announced his exit from the opposition party following what he called irreconcilable differences with some elders of the party. He, along with some other former PDP bigwigs in the state, defected formally to the APC on Saturday. Salvador said he served his former party selflessly adding that he worked diligently towards the PDP’s target of winning the state. He debunked insinuations in some quarters that he defected to APC after acting out Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s script to destabilise and weaken the PDP. “All these things are lies .White lies. I was never a mole of Tinubu in PDP. Those who are saying that are just venting their frustrations because I left the PDP. “You see, I did a lot for the party, spending my personal resources to ensure that my former party breaks the jinx of winning the state for the first time. “I was mobilising our members moving from local government to local government, ward to ward, towards a vision to make the party strong and win the general elections. “I was really working hard to take the party to greater heights .You can’t be working that hard if you are somebody’s mole. But my efforts were not appreciated by some people who always wanted to reap without sowing. “They were always frustrating my efforts and peddled lies that I was involved in the killing of a chieftain of the party. “And I thought my continued stay in the PDP was becoming frustrating and dangerous. That was why I left with my teeming supporters to join the APC”, he said. He said the defection to APC meant that the PDP was dead in the state as he had collapsed the entire structure of his former party into APC. Salvador thanked Tinubu , APC executive members and other party members for the ceremonious reception for him and his supporters . He said he felt at home in the fold of the progressives, having been with Tinubu and others in the days of the Alliance for Democracy (AD). The former PDP chairman promised to add value to his new party to garner more votes for APC in the general elections. Meanwhile, the state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has described the official defection of Salvador to the APC on Saturday as a face saving action. The Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Mr Taofik Gani said in a statement on Sunday that the former party chairman could not have stayed longer than he did. He said Salvador had been technically expelled from the PDP as party members had passed a vote of no confidence in him. “Salvador has only proactively moved to APC to avoid the imminent expulsion already concluded. “He is not a figure that can be a threat to our victory in 2019.He did not even emerge Chairman on merit or clout but on the benevolence of some leaders he now maligns as undemocratic. “We wish him well but we can never miss an over -ambitious politician that he is”,Gani added http://www.metronaija.ng/why-i-left-the-pdp-salvador-former-lagos-chairman/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
The head of the Catholic Church told a crowd of 100,000 in the Sicilian city of Palermo on Saturday that he does not believe one can be a member of the Mafia and also a devout Christian. “You cannot believe in God and belong to the Mafia,” Pope Francis said during a visit to the Italian Mediterranean island to which the Cosa Nostra organised crime network is native. Life is about love and not hate, forgiveness and not revenge, the pope said, according to the Vatican. The Argentinian religious leader’s visit was in honour of the 25th anniversary of the murder of an anti Mafia priest. Father Pino Puglisi, killed in Palermo in 1993, dedicated himself to diverting young people away from organised crime and corruption. He was beatified in a ceremony in 2013 in the Sicilian capital before an estimated crowd of 80,000. It was the first time that such a title was awarded to a victim of Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian mafia. Displaced persons at the camp built for victims of flooding by Kogi State Government The Kogi government has set up temporary camps for victims of flood in Lokoja, as more houses get submerged in the confluence city. According to Mr Sanusi Yahaya, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, camps have been opened in Wada Estate and Old Poly Quarters in the state’s capital city to accommodate the flood victims. “We are already collaborating with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that relief materials and other essential facilities are provided in the camps. “We had challenge of water supply yesterday (Saturday) because the borehole is not functioning, but we have been able to resolve that by providing alternative water supply sources. “Light and clinic are also other challenges because the camp has not been connected to the grid, but since it is an emergency, we will solve the problems as they are being identified. “The accommodation is adequate for the number of people currently displaced. We can still accommodate more people. “Already, NEMA officials have visited the camps in Koton-karfe. As we speak, they are on their way to Lokoja with other teams sent by the federal government to assess the situation,” Yahaya said. The commissioner advised residents of flood-prone communities to relocate to safer places to avoid loss of lives and property. “All the indices that were in place before the 2012 flood are already here except for the Lagdo Dam in Cameroun that is not spilling water as yet. “As at Saturday morning, the water level in River Niger was already 10.014 metres, compared to its 9.5 metres depth on Sept. 8, 2012; it is time to move away from water,” he said. Mr James Ahmadu, Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, Kogi State Emergency Management Agency, who also spoke with newsmen, said that the flood victims had been trooping into the camps that were set up on Friday. “Fifty-five households arrived the camp on Friday while additional 33 came on Saturday. Mr Umar Zakari, the Camp Leader, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that victims from Adankolo Estate lost practically everything they had. He commended the state government for the temporary accommodation and appealed to relevant stakeholders to assist the flood victims. “We thank government for providing water, but we need food, mosquitoes nets, light and a clinic. Our children are getting sick,” Zakari said. The Kogi government set up five camps to accommodate 64 communities displaced by flood in Kotokarfe, last month. http://www.metronaija.ng/flooding-kogi-sets-up-camps-for-lokoja-victims/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
THE Presidency yesterday dismissed corruption allegations against the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari. A national newspaper had claimed that Kyari demanded bribe as a condition for the award of a contract. Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Garba Shehu, said the publication was improbable and outlandish as Kyari had no “private meetings with the person making those allegations.” He added:”What is even more surprising is the decision by the newspaper to run the cooked up lies despite obvious loopholes in the story, such as the Bureau of Public Procurement’s denial that a major source for the story was a member of their staff. “With a slew of crucial elections ahead, some politicians and their media agents appear to be working together to build pressure on the Buhari administration by wielding non-existent scandals against it. “We equally note that the supply of 15 Hilux vehicles for the Presidency was an unlikely contract to have been awarded, as it did not exist anywhere in the 2016 and 2017 budgets. “Checking the appropriation for 2016 and 2017, that request is not even there. How could Abba Kyari have asked for money to award a contract that did not exist anywhere at all? “In addition to that, the amount allegedly given in bribe was also suspicious, as the office of the presidential aide had been known in the past to receive imprest of N200 million and above every month, with no one expected to give account. “It was only since Abba Kyari occupied that position that things changed.” According to him, it is difficult to make a case of N29 million bribery against an official who spurned a monthly payment of N200 million to his office, which he didn’t need to account to anyone. http://www.metronaija.ng/presidency-defends-kyari-over-contract-scam-allegation/

The Special Presidential Panel for the Recovery of Public Property is to recover the seven billion dollars bailout fund granted commercial banks between 2006 and 2008. The panel Chairman, Mr Okoi Obono-Obla, said in Abuja on Friday that the banks had yet to refund the money over a decade after. Obono-Obla said that the bailout fund was not a gift to the commercial banks and so must be recovered and returned to government’s coffers. “We are currently doing a lot of investigations to recover monies that have been taken away from the people of Nigeria. READ ALSO GTBank's MD arrested for allegedly assaulting employee “One of them is the almost seven billion dollars bailout fund that the Central Bank of Nigeria granted commercial banks in 2006, 2007 and 2008. “After 13 years or so, these commercial banks have not returned that money to the coffers of the Federal Government of Nigeria. “When we enquired from the CBN the status of that money, the banks told us that the money was ‘dashed’ (given free) to the commercial banks,’’ he said. The panel chairman said that the money belonged to the people of Nigeria and so could not be given away like that to commercial banks owned by private individuals. The Nigeria Consolidation Ambassadors’ Network, a group, on Wednesday in Abuja picked the All Progressives Congress (APC) Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for President Muhamnadu Buhari to re-contest the presidency in 2019. This made President Buhari the first aspirant to pick the forms as the APC commenced sales of the forms to aspirants for the 2019 general elections. Buhari had in April declared his intention to seek re-election at the APC National Executive Committee (NEC). The group which paid a total of N45 million to obtain the forms, was received by the Mr Adams Oshiomohle, the APC National Chairman in Abuja. Speaking on why the group decided to purchase the forms on behalf of the President, its National Co-coordinator, Sunnsi Musa, said the President was not multi-millionaire cash wise. “But he has millions of supporters who are always ready to come together to pay for his nomination form. “It is my singular honour and rare privilege to present to you a cheque of N45 million as payment for the expression of interest and nomination forms for President Muhammadu Buhari, ”he said. According Musa, the group embarks on the project based on the recognition that the President has started laying a foundation for a better Nigeria. The National Co-ordinator said that there was need to consolidate on the gains so far made by the present administration in the country. “We have no doubt that Mr President has both in action an word been working to lay a foundation for a greater and prosperous nation that our generation and future generation will be proud of. “Under his administration, Nigeria has become a country sought after for investments in the world and has assumed its leadership role in not just Africa but also the world. “Today, Nigeria‘s moribund infrastructure is being revived. There is no state in Nigeria that does not have several major Federal Government infrastructure projects, either completed or being executed under President Buhari. “We have a stable and steadily growing economy that is departing from the monotonic oil dependence. Agriculture is now an attractive venture as farmers are becoming multi-millionaires. “Nigeria is now an exporter of agricultural products as opposed to what it was three years ago,“ he said. He noted that for the first time since the return of democracy, Nigerians had a president who could beat his chest and state that he had never stolen government funds. According to Musa, Buhari is not among presidents who meet at night to strike shady personal deals. He added that the President was poised to ensure that every agreement entered into by Nigeria was in the interest of the people and the country and its unborn generations. This he noted had indeed boosted the confidence of investors into the country and the inflow of direct foreign investment into the country. “Looted funds are being recovered and ploughed back to develop our country deficit infrastructure. “Almost a million farmers under the Anchor Borrowers Programme are benefiting from low interest loans and 500, 000 previously unemployed graduates are now employed under the NPower Scheme.” He also noted that N400, 000 extremely poor families were already receiving N5, 000 monthly stipend while over N8 million children were being fed daily in public schools across the country as promised by the Buhari-led administration. “Today, and for the first time in our history, we have a government that is honest and sincere in investing in the poor, the masses and the underprivileged.” Musa maintained that his group could not fold its hands and watch while the foundation laid by the Buhari administration would be destroyed by some other persons. “We cannot afford to destroy the future of our children. The foundation, laid by President Muhammadu Buhari, must be reinforced. “It is for this reason, Mr Chairman, that we have decided to pull our meagre resources together to purchase the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for President Buhari. He has presented himself to our party members to be chosen as their candidate for the 2019 general elections. Oshiomhole, while receiving the group, thanked its members for their gesture and for believing in President Buhari and the APC administration http://www.metronaija.ng/2019-why-we-bought-forms-for-buhari-group-2/

The Police Command in Cross River has arrested a couple for allegedly trafficking their two-year old first son to an agent in Portharcourt in exchange for money. The Commissioner of Police, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, who presented the suspects to journalists on Tuesday in Calabar, said the couple was arrested on July 23 in Calabar after a report by the mother of the child, Mrs Magdalene Bassey. Inuwa explained that the mother of the child reported that her husband, Mr Daniel Bassey, gave out the child to a trafficking agent for an undisclosed amount of money. “On July 23 2018, one Mrs Magdalene Bassey reported at Efut Divisional Headquarters in Calabar that her husband, Mr Daniel Bassey, took their first son to an unknown person in Port Harcourt through one woman called `Mummy’. “The police immediately swung into action and arrested the suspect. During interrogation; the suspect revealed that his wife was a party to the transaction. “The duo are now in police custody to unravel the cause of this inhuman action and possible prosecution,’’ he said. The father of the child told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that said he gave out the child as collateral for N180,000 to help him pay his house rent . “I did it based on the debt of N21,000 I collected from a friend to pay my house rent. “There is no work in this rainy season and I am jobless. A guy from my area informed me that he knows a woman who lends money to people. “That my friend told me that I can give out the child as collateral to get the money without necessarily selling him. “The woman gave me N180,000 immediately after she received the child. “After that, my mother in-law came and asked me of the child and I lied to her that I took the baby to my brother for holiday,’’ he said. The commissioner also presented 37 suspected armed robbers; 20 suspected cultists; eight suspects for unlawful possession of firearms and five suspects for murder, among others. He assured that the command would continue to work in collaboration with other security agencies and residents of the state with a view to safeguarding lives and property. http://www.metronaija.ng/why-i-used-my-son-as-collateral-for-loan-father/ cc: lalsticlala mynd44 |
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied a newspaper report that it recently received N50 million from the government of Jigawa for logistics. Dr. Mahmud Isah, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, made the clarification in a statement in Dutse, on Tuesday. Isah said that the commission had not received any form of support from the state government following the extension of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) last month. “The attention of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Jigawa state has been drawn to a publication in Daily Trust of Tuesday, August 28, 2018 on page 4 captioned PVC: Jigawa supports INEC with N50m. “The INEC Jigawa state office wishes to state in clear terms that it has not received any form of support/assistance from the state government during the extension period of the PVC/CVR exercise. “The publication came to us as a surprise, as the commission since the commencement of the CVR in April 2017 to date, has been adequately funded by the national office. “Hence, there is no reason why to lean on Jigawa state government or indeed any organisation for any form of logistic support,’’ Isah said. He however stated that the state office of INEC holds the state government in high esteem as a major stakeholder in election matters. But, he disagreed with the comment of state Deputy Governor on the issue of extending logistic support to it as contained in the publication by Daily Trust Newspaper. The REC, therefore, urged the general public to regard the publication as baseless, unfounded and not true. “In furtherance to this position of the office, we are calling on all politicians in the state to desist from making unguarded statements capable of truncating our democracy. “We also want call on all media houses to always crosscheck their stories before going to press,” he added. He said that INEC in the state remained resolute in its maintenance of transparency, credibility, fairness in all its electoral duties that will meet national and international standards. “We will continue to maintain our neutrality at all times as an independent electoral umpire,” he emphasised. http://www.metronaija.ng/inec-denies-receiving-n50m-from-jigawa-govt/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
The Lagos State Government on Monday appealed to resident doctors at the State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) to shelve its proposed three-day warning strike in the interest of the people. The Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, who made the appeal, urged the doctors to consider the plight of the masses who always bear the burden of such actions. The Association of Resident Doctors at LASUTH had at a news conference on Sunday indicated its plan to embark on an indefinite strike following what they called acute shortage of resident doctors and house officers in the teaching hospital. The association said failure of LASUTH management to immediately employ House Officers and Resident Doctors will trigger the three-day strike beginning from Sept. 5 to Sept. 7. The ARD-LASUTH threatened a total shut down of services in the hospital and that they will not attend to emergency cases during the period. “There are plans by the state government to employ more house officers and resident doctors. We have started that already. “If you will recall that the Lagos State Health Service Commission care facilities have an approval to recruit more house officers and we are working on the other approval for the teaching hospitals. “So we are aware of the agitations and we are working seriously on how to address the issue; we will meet with stakeholders today. “I appeal to the doctors to shelve their strike in the interest of the people,’’ Idris said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The commissioner assured the doctors that the state government would do everything possible to avert the strike. http://www.metronaija.ng/lagos-govt-urges-resident-doctors-to-shelve-strike-plan/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

Zeus Polls, an independent Europe-based pollsters has predicted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) may likely win most states in the 2019 gubernatorial elections. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Zeus Polls correctly predicted Gov. Willie Obiano’s and Dr Kayode Fayemi’s victories in the last gubernatorial elections in Anambra and Ekiti. The latest Zeus Polls findings signed by Tanko Suleiman, Polls Chief Operating Officer, Berlin, Germany, was made available to newsmen in Lagos on Tuesday. The polls posited that in spite of a seemingly voters’ antipathy to the APC in the upcoming 2019 general elections, the party was favoured to win the 2019 governorship elections in key states. It noted that 51 per cent of voters polled in Kaduna State expressed a desire to return incumbent Gov. Nasir el-Rufai come 2019. “65 per cent of voters polled in Lagos State want incumbent Gov. Ambode returned in 2019 while 58 per cent of voters polled in Edo State say they will return incumbent Gov. Godwin Obaseki. “In the PDP-held Rivers State, 65 per cent of voters polled do not want incumbent Gov. Nyesom Wike back in 2019, as over 47 per cent of polled voters said they will vote Tonye Princewill, a riverine aspirant of the APC if he picks the party’s ticket. “In Kano State, only 43 per cent of voters polled are in favour of the incumbent Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje returning in 2019, as 60 per cent say they will vote for any candidate supported by former Gov Kwankwanso’s Kwankwasiyya Movement,” it stated. http://www.metronaija.ng/zeus-polls-says-apc-will-sweep-more-states-in-2019/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 The organisation however, said that its findings on who may likely emerge as president was still uncertain but added that going forward, it would release monthly updates, on the continuous exhaustive polling on the 2019 Elections. |
