PoliticsPDP Can’t Return To Power In Ekiti, Nigeria- Fayemi by metronaija2(op): 9:11am On Dec 29, 2017
Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, on Thursday described the attempt being made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reclaim power in 2019 as a plot to continue to loot the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fayemi made the statement while addressing newsmen at his Isan-Ekiti country home shortly after hosting APC leaders from across the state.

He urged Nigerians not to use the current fuel scarcity to rate President Muhammadu Buhari’s performances, saying

“What we are witnessing is just a normal curve in the life of any administration.

We will get over it and move on, but largely President has not disappointed Nigerians,” he said.

The minister described the panel of enquiry inaugurated by Gov. Ayo Fayose to probe his administration as a kangaroo one, revealing that it was an attempt to smear his reputation and render him unpopular by the PDP-led government.

“Fayose’s stock in trade is lying against someone to score political gains.

“They started with the probe of N852 million UBEC fund and when they knew they could not go far, they started concocting lies and said I looted N17 billion.

“Let us wait and see who will go to jail between Fayose and I.

“I have been out of office and I am still moving free, but I am sure he won’t be able to walk free on the streets after losing immunity because of the way he ran the state aground.”

Fayemi said Nigerians would ensure that PDP didn’t return to power because of the high level of looting it perpetrated while in the saddle.

The Minister didn’t say categorically whether he was still nursing governorship ambition.

He said the APC was incurably committed to making sure that Ekiti rejoined the league of developing states by ensuring that the party won the 2018 governorship poll.

“What the PDP wanted to come back and do is stealing.

“The options for Nigerians in 2019 is not to return to the old age of criminalisation and brigandage by voting for the PDP.

“There is nothing to convince Nigerians that they have changed with the shenanigans that characterised their national convention and poor performances by their governors.

“Up to now, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and his henchmen have not apologised about how they ran the country a ground.

” So, there is nothing to suggest that PDP remains a credible alternative to APC in 2019”, he said.

Fayemi discountenanced the attacks by his political adversaries that he had not used his ministerial position for the benefit of the state.

He said: ”what I have done is measurable and clear. This government has begun the construction of a federal secretariat and housing estate in Ekiti and the rail-line was extended to this state in the Federal Government’s proposal due to my intervention.

“About 4,000 Ekiti indigenes are benefitting from N-power and very soon it will go up to 12,000. The proposal for kaolin exploration in Ekiti has just been completed, that of the bauxite will begin soon.

“President Buhari’s government is planning to set up a cottage industry in Ekiti for the sake of the solid minerals exploration and I have enlisted small scale miners around Ijero Ekiti for them to be able to benefit from the N5b loan set up by the Bank of Industry.”

CrimeFCT Imposes Curfew As 3 Die In Bwari by metronaija2(op): 4:12pm On Dec 27, 2017
Soldiers and policemen, on Monday, cordoned off Bwari, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory, following clashes between Gwari and Hausa youths.

The security personnel prevented residents from moving around and sent back home motorists taking their families out for Christmas celebration.

It was gathered that the violence broke out after a fight between a Hausa and Gwari youth on Sunday night, which led to the death of the latter.

The death of the Gwari youth, it was learnt, angered his kinsmen who carried out a reprisal on the Hausa community during which a market was torched by a mob.

The clash, which was believed to be the fallout of the leadership tussle between the two chiefs in the area, began at about 10am when many residents were in church for the Christmas service.

One of our correspondents, who visited the scene, observed that many of the houses were shut while majority of residents were asked to stay indoors until the security situation improved.

Three vehicles, belonging to the National Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps, were observed patrolling the area.

Many of the recreational parks, hotels and other fun spots in the town were deserted as residents could not go out due to fear.

It was learnt that some of the churches that were observing their Christmas service hurriedly ended the service for security reasons.

The FCT police spokesman, Anjuguri Manzah, confirmed the violence, adding that armed policemen had been deployed in the town to contain the crisis.

“The details of the incident are still sketchy, but our immediate objective is to contain the violence and ensure the security of lives and property,” he said on the telephone.

Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory Administration has imposed a 6pm to 6am. curfew on Bwari township.

The Minister of FCTA, Mallam Muhammad Bello, after a closed-door meeting with stakeholders in the Area Council, declared the curfew while assessing the damages caused by a crisis that erupted in the town on Monday.

He told newsmen that three people died during the clash.

CrimeNigerian Jailed For Raping Five Teenage Girls In The UK (Photo) by metronaija2(op): 3:14pm On Dec 17, 2017
A 20-year-old man has been jailed after being convicted of multiple rapes following two trials in the UK.

Eniola Balogun was sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court on Friday, December 15, to a total of 21 years' imprisonment

Balogun, of no fixed address but from the Tottenham area pleaded guilty at Wood Green Crown Court on 19 September to four counts of rape on four separate teenage girls, aged between 13 and 16 - he also pleaded guilty to the possession of indecent images of child.

Balogun had been found guilty of a further three counts of rape following an earlier trial at the same venue on 30 March. These offences related to one victim - a 16-year-old girl.

The Judge also ordered Balogun is subject to an extended licence period of eight years which will come into effect on his release from prison.

Balogun will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order.

Balogun, a US citizen, was living with his family in Tottenham at the time of his offending. Whilst there, between June and August 2016, he persuaded young girls through social media (Snapchat and Instagram) or in the street, to send him indecent photographs.

Armed with these photos, he threatened to distribute the images unless they met up with him.
When they met up, he raped them. On all occasions, Balogun took their phones off them and promised to return their phones after sexual contact. Two of the victims were threatened with violence if they resisted.

The five victims, aged between 13 and 16 years old, met up at a variety of locations in Tottenham, Harlow, Thamesmead and Woolwich. Some victims were told to perform sexual acts via video on more than one occasion.

Detective Sergeant Tony Killeen, from the Met's Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command, said:

"I wish to acknowledge the courage of these young people in coming forward and providing the vital evidence needed to prosecute Balogun.

"The teenage girls were victims of online sexual offences and did not recognise that they were being abused. He used his social media profile to gain their trust, share intimate photos and then used those images to coerce his victims into sexual activity.

"My advice to any child or young person is: do not share pictures online that you would find embarrassing if anyone else, such as your friends or parents were to see them as you have no control over the images once sent. But if you are worried about someone sharing intimate pictures of you online please don't let embarrassment stop you from contacting the police. Alternatively, online abuse can be reported online to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre. Advice on online grooming can be found on many websites such as the NSPCC.

"Balogun is a prolific sexual offender and it cannot be discounted that he has sexually abused other people. If you have been a victim of Balogun, please contact police via 101 - specially trained officers are there to support you."

CelebritiesBurna Boy In SARS Cell With Other Robbery Suspects by metronaija2(op): 9:08am On Dec 17, 2017
Hip hop musician, Damini Ogulu, aka Burna Boy, is currently cooling his heels in the custody of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Command.

The embattled artiste has spent two days with criminals held in a SARS cell for offences ranging from robbery to theft,PUNCH reports.

He was reportedly being investigated for conspiracy in the robbery of his colleague, Abiye Jumbo aka Mr. 2Kay.

Burna Boy, who was declared wanted by the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, on November 20, was apprehended on Friday and detained.

Four suspects, including Burna Boy’s road manager, Joel Kantiok, had been paraded for allegedly robbing Mr. 2Kay on October 22, in his room at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, shortly after “Buckwyld N Breathless” concert held in the facility.

During the parade, the suspects, except Kantiok, confessed to have carried out the attack on the order of Burna Boy.

The assailants had disguised as room service officials to gain entry into the singer’s room.

They reportedly beat him up and dispossessed him of a wristwatch, gold jewellery, phones among other valuables estimated at millions of naira at gunpoint.

They subsequently tied him up and fled with their loot.

A police source told our correspondent on Saturday that the singer was still making statements to detectives.

The source said, “He is currently in the SARS custody and he is helping the police in the investigation. For now, I can’t say categorically what his charges will be but definitely they are related to robbery for which the other suspects were arraigned.”

Another police officer, who is privy to the case, said Burna Boy’s arraignment might not come up on Monday as planned, noting that investigators wanted to present watertight charges against him before the court.

CultureSultan Of Sokoto Reacts To Hijab Controversy by metronaija2(op): 8:46am On Dec 17, 2017
Sultan of Sokoto and President - Generation of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Dr. Mohammad Sa'ad Abubakar, has weighed in on the lingering controversy over Hijab. A Muslim female law graduate, Firdau Amasa, was turned back from the venue of the Call to Bar ceremony that took place last Wednesday because she was wearing a hijab. This has generated a lot of debate with many people condemning her for attempting to flout the laws of the legal profession while others are of the opinion that she should have been allowed into the venue.

Reacting to the controversy, the Sultan of Sokoto said he is yet to understand why the issue of Hijab would be so controversial to the extent that female Muslims who wear Hijab would be 'molested'. According to the monarch, Hijab simply means decent dressing for Muslim women and it is mandatory in Islam. The Sultan said this yesterday at the fifth National Convention of Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) with the theme, "Public Trust and Accountability" where he was represented by a member of NSCIA and Wazirin of Katsina, Prof. Sanni Abubakar Lugga

"His eminence wonders while Hijab has now become a controversial issue. Hijab simply means decent dressing, decent dressing by the females. So why should decent dressing be a problem? The Hijab is just an Arabic word. In English it means decent dressing. His Eminence has asked Nigerians to reflect and see that this is not only an Islamic mode of dressing but a Christian mode of dressing. It is also a Judaism mode of dressing and it is a dressing for every decent woman. It is a dressing for any woman who wants to preserve her chastity in public. Secondly, in Nigerian constitution it is absolutely clear. Why should Nigerian Muslims be molested and even denied their own right? The Appeal Court ruling in Ilorin is there, the Appeal Court in Lagos and also the High Court all delivered judgement in favour of Hijab. Justice Alooma, the former CJN, Justice Bukalchuwa and other Senior Justices in Nigeria wear their Hijab and then the wig on top of it. The Nigeria Judicial Council (NJC), the Highest body in the judiciary has not said, 'no, they should stop' which means the Nigerian constitution allows the Hijab, the Nigerian Courts through these three judgements have allowed the Hijab and the NJC through these senior judges has allowed the Hijab. Why will a legal school refuse our sister's induction into the judiciary simply because she is wearing Hijab? Is the law school saying they are above the NJC, they are above the Nigerian constitution, they are above these three senior courts?" the monarch said

CelebritiesI Have Forgiven Burnaboy - Mr. 2kay by metronaija2(op): 6:06pm On Dec 16, 2017
Mr. 2kay in a new chat with Saturday Beats, said he no longer holds any grudge against Burnaboy.

Recall the singer was said to ahve been attacked by Burnaboy's men during Tuface's concert over 2months ago, an attack that some him deeply bruised.

Speaking on the incident he said;

“When they were beating me, I thought I was going to die on that day. When you see a man with a gun, anything can happen. They were debating on whether to shoot me or not. They were debating over my life if I should live or not. It was one of them that said he was my fan and he loved my song. That person did not touch me; he only tied me to a chair and was calming me down. It was God that saved my life because when I first saw them, the first thing I shouted was Jesus and I believe that was what saved me.”

On allegations that Burnaboy called to apologise after the incident, he“What I said was that Burna Boy has called me and he apologised without admitting that he was involved in the assault on me. He told me that he had no hand in it. I had to reply him that I never fingered him; it was his manager and the boys that fingered him. All we need is honesty and the truth. He cannot apologise to me over a matter that he has no hand in.

“At the end of the day, we all want this issue to go with this year and start the New Year on a fresh note. I was supposed to release my album this year but we could not do so because of this whole issue.

“Next year should be a very busy one for me and I don’t want to spend my time at a police station or pay numerous visits to the commissioner of police. I just want to have peace. Burna Boy is still my brother any day and I have forgiven him but what we want is the truth. If he calls me and opens up, we have said that we would settle it out of court. It is possible for us to have a song together in the future if he wants it because he is my brother. I swear with my life that I hold nothing against Burna Boy,” he added.

The singer reiterated the fact that while he was being assaulted, he was robbed of a wristwatch which he claimed cost about N9m. He added that he didn’t care if anyone believed he owned such an expensive piece of jewellery.

“Everything they stole from me was more than N9m; my wristwatch alone cost N9m. Everything stolen from me was over N10m. I wear an Audemars Piguet watch. I am a brand ambassador for an American alcoholic brand, Christian Brothers. For me to get an endorsement with the brand, you should know that money was involved. Also, my song, ‘Count it all Joy’, had the highest number of downloads from MTN, not just in Nigeria but MTN as a whole. I go for events, I have godfathers and some footballers are my friends as well.

“I have people that could bless me with anything they want to gift me. I am from Rivers State and I do a lot of gigs; the music pays me a lot. I get royalties from my records playing in the UK as well. My record label is not broke so I wonder why people think I cannot afford a wristwatch worth N9m. I have a father who is my boss and he can afford to buy anything for me. It is my choice to spend as much as N9m on a watch and I owe no one any explanation. It is an investment and I can take that watch to the bank.”

PoliticsSenate Legalises Card Reader, Sets Fees For Aspirants by metronaija2(op): 10:51am On Dec 16, 2017
The Electoral Act No. 6, 2010 Amendment Bill 2017 passed recently by the senate makes it mandatory for use of card reader and banned manual accreditation, when it becomes a law.

According to the amendment, House of Representatives aspirants are now to pay N1,000,000 and those for State Assembly will pay N500,000.

The law stated there shall now be full biometric accreditation of voters with Smart Card Readers and/or other technological devices, as may introduce for elections by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).

It states that presiding officers must now instantly transmit accreditation and results from polling units to various collation centres.

“Presiding Officer who contravenes this shall be imprisoned for at least 5 years (no option of fine).

“All presiding officers must now first record accreditation data and polling results on INEC’s prescribed forms before transmitting them. The data/result recorded must be the same with what they transmitted.’’

According to the amendment, INEC has unfettered powers to conduct elections by electronic voting.

Besides manual registers, INEC has been mandated to keep electronic registers of voters.

“INEC is now mandated to publish Voters’ Registers on its Official website(s) for public scrutiny at least 30 days before a general election and any INEC staff who is responsible for this but fails to act as prescribed shall be liable on conviction to 6 months imprisonment.

“INEC is now mandated to keep a National Electronic Register of Election Results as a distinct database or repository of polling unit by polling unit results for all elections conducted by INEC.

“ Collation of election result is now mainly electronic, as transmitted unit results will help to determine final results on real time basis.

“INEC is now mandated to record details of electoral materials – quantities, serial numbers used to conduct elections (for proper tracking),’’ the amendment stated.’’

The bill states that a political party whose candidate dies after commencement of an election and before the declaration of the result of that election now has a 14-day window to conduct a fresh primary in order for INEC to conduct a fresh election within 21 days of the death of the party’s candidate;

“Political Parties’ Polling Agents are now entitled to inspect originals of electoral materials before commencement of election and any Presiding Officer who violates this provision of the law shall be imprisoned for at least 1 year.

“No Political Party can impose qualification/disqualification criteria, measures or conditions on any Nigerian for the purpose of nomination for elective offices, except as provided in the 1999 Constitution.

“The election of a winner of an election can no longer be challenged on grounds of qualification, if he/she (winner) satisfied the applicable requirements of sections 65, 106, 131 or 177 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and he is not, as may be applicable, in breach of sections 66, 107, 137 or 182 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999. [For example, a person’s election cannot be challenged on the ground that he did not pay tax, as this is not a qualifying condition under the Constitution.]

“All members of Political Parties are now eligible to determine the Ad-Hoc Delegates to elect candidates of parties in indirect primaries. The capacity of party executives to unduly influence or rig party primaries has been reasonably curtailed, if not totally removed.

“Parties can no longer impose arbitrary nomination fees on political aspirants. The Bill passed prescribes limits for each elective offices.’’

Accordingly, the bill recommended N150,000 for a Ward Councillorship aspirant in the FCT; and States; N250,000 for an Area Council Chairmanship aspirant in the FCT; and Council Chairmanship in other LGAs of States; and N500,000 for a House of Assembly aspirant.

It prescribed N1,000,000 for a House of Representatives aspirant; N2,000,000 for a Senatorial aspirant; N5,000,000 for a Governorship aspirant; and N10,000,000) for a Presidential aspirant.

PoliticsGunmen Kill Ferry Operator In Bayelsa by metronaija2(op): 3:24pm On Dec 14, 2017
Another ferry operator has been killed by gunmen on the Yenagoa-Akassa waterway in Bayelsa, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The incident occurred barely 24 hours after the killing of a boat operator on the Sangana- Igbemotoru waterway on Dec. 13.

Community sources told a NAN correspondent in Yenagoa that the latest killing took place at Okobotuo, near Akassa in the Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa early on Thursday.

The victim of the attack was identified as the former chairman of the Akassa Unit of the Nigerian Maritime Workers Union.

His name was given simply as Mr Suku.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of the Bayelsa State Chapter of the Nigerian Maritime Workers Union, Mr Lloyd Sese, said the deadly attacks were crippling economic activities in coastal communities in the state.

He described the death of the former union leader as regrettable and a painful loss to the labour movement in Bayelsa.

Sese pleaded with security agencies to intensify security patrol on waterways to check the recurring killings.

A source, who claimed to have witnessed the latest killing, said the assassins shot sporadically to scare away onlookers before killing Suku.

The source, who pleaded, anonymity said that the killers did not collect anything from the victim after the killing.

On Dec. 14, the commissioner of police in Bayelsa announced that the command had taken steps to ensure the safety of citizens, following frequent killing of residents of the state.

No fewer than five people have been shot dead in Bayelsa in recent weeks, according to records.

A female journalist survived an armed robbery attack in Yenagoa a few days ago.

Bayelsa, which is rich in oil and gas, has been a hotbed of militancy and abductions of mainly oil workers for decades.
