Car Talk / Re: ML 320 (1999 Model) VS Toyota RAV4 (1999-2000) by MIB1(m): 2:32pm On Jun 27, 2015
nurey:

in terms of initial purchase, the Rav 4 may be costlier to purchase or be on par with the merc in Naija because of the toyota syndrome (remember you can't find brand new of both cars anymore)

the Rav 4 has two engine variants of 2.0L 4cylinder with manual and automatic gear versions. the merc has multiple engine variants from petrol to diesel I4, I5n V6 and V8 of different specs.

the ML is chunkier so the Rav4 will have better fuel economy and likely faster than the ML due to size and weight when both are compared in the 4cylinder stage. I can't buy a 4cylinder ML cause I believe it will be under powered.

the ML has a 3rd row seat which can seat 2adults comfortable and 3 in a rugged manner, but the rav doesn't. the rav has a good sized boot volume and good looking compared to the ML (my opinion).

the ML will need optimum care, will cost slightly higher to maintain, needs a professional mecho to look into it, is a German machine and will perform wonderfully well but the Rav 4 has a better resale value than it and far/much more reliable than the ML.

the ML is a sport utility vehicle and will perform well in offroad and rough road situations compared to the Rav4 which is a CUV which will have a better fuel economy and drive just like a slightly raised car.

Well ur points are valid , if money is no object the OP should get the Benz. That gen of the rav4 is too feminine IMO

Esteem Forum member,

I would like your candid opinion on the choice of either a RAV4 (1999-2000) and Mercedes ML 320 1999 Model in term of durability, usage, fuel consumption, maintenance cost.

Thanks.
They are not in the same class at all in terms of anything .. The merc will cost more to buy, fuel and maintain

The truth is the Nigerian automobile market still has a long way to go. Most of our mechanics are quacks and people patronize them alot.

Then why would you buy a brand new Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Subaru e.t.c then drive it to kazeem's place to fix, these guys can't fix new model cars as these cars are out of their league. They learnt their trade on datsun and other extinct car models. Also vital components in new vehicles are covered by warranty till around 100,000 km or 5 years, whichever comes first. So your stories ain't adding up.

Then, if you can also afford a new car, then you shouldn't have a problem repairing the car in a standard service centre operated by the car manufacturer or an assigned dealer.

What do u mean my stories ain't adding up, a car bought in 2004 with about 140000km is not possible or what?

Mind u that car didn't get this far with kazeems repairing it, the only work kazeems do in it are basic stuffs like changing of bulbs or brake pads. Everything else is handled by kia specialists

Based on the rating of your engine, for Benzs and Bmws is between 60 to 80 degrees. Predominantly folks don't go below 71 and 85 degrees thermostat here, except, you are looking for trouble. I think same goes for the Jap mobiles, else i stand to be corrected.

If you use 71 to 80 degrees thermo here, you are perfectly in order, you would never experience overheating nor run your engine rich nor burn top gasket.

Thanks a lot , one more Q pls, which of the hoses should I remove to install the thermo, is it the one that goes into the upper part of the radiator or the one that goes into the lower part??...

my dear friend if you love your self and youbdint want Kazeem and his crew 2 use your car to learn work pls stay away from Hyundai and Kia brands. Had a Hyundai and Kia and it was every weekend @ d mechanics shop. no parts readily available except u go to their Dana workshops. Don't get me wrong their cars are not that bad but for our roads its a no go area & their suspensions are as soft as biscuit bones.

Oga , I can tell u that u don't know how to maintain cars. If I show the pix of an optima we have been using for 10 yrs u go hala. I kW the parts are not easy to come by but once u buy a kia part I won't have to replace it for a long time

I frankly don't know unless I do research but I think you should do that because you know you car and it's specs.

I can tell you that our SUV that was shipped in from SoCal has the same thermostat and it hasn't missed a beat.

Nigeria is not that much different from most climates which has summer temperatures.

A useless kazeem took out mine without telling me when he was replacing a bad radiator on the car. So I need to get another , its a 2003 optima i4

Even if you leave in Alaska or Australia, your engine needs a thermostat.

The job of a thermostat is to regulate water through the cooling system. It opens and closes base don temperature.

There are different thermostats with different temperatures settings available in the market place for most cars. On my Austin I can go from a 160 degree thermo to 210 degree based on how my engine is tuned.

But you need a thermo in the system.

Hope you're enjoying Sri Lanka, you should share some pictures of the car scene out there.

please what's the best thermostat temp rating for Nigeria.. Thanks

I spend like 18k on transport and feeding monthly, my office is close to where i stay and i still stay with my folks and i can comfortably save 60k monthly

Hope that's enough

Bro u already said ur office is close to where u live.. IMO leave that car first .. I earn more than u earn now (for bout 20 months now) and I no dey reason motor, I have peeps I join to work tho.

Guy leave that motor matter first cos if motor do u sometimes esp as its not brand new. Apart from the maintenance , some unexpected failures will happen after all its a machine.

Nna men, this 50k thing depends on where u intend to settle down.. I for example have been earning 150k about 2 yrs now. I have been able to save close to 2m but oboy I still feel its not enough to get married .. Sometimes it depends on where u wanna settle and the lifestyle u have been used to
