A mentally ill woman in her thirties delivered a baby girl on Ndidem Usang Iso, Marian road, Calabar’s most highbrow street, yesterday, June 9 at about 3:50pm.

According to CrossRiverWatch, eyewitnesses around said the lady has been a familiar face in the neighbourhood before she became pregnant.

When a CrossRiverWatch reporter visited the scene of the delivery after the mother and baby had been moved to the hospital, one shop owner told our reporter that:

"We did not see her again for some time after she became pregnant. I think she was raped. She returned some days ago and sat in that place and has been feeling very uncomfortable since yesterday. Nobody knew it was labor that was disturbing her. It was when the baby started coming out that people called the health workers who came here to assist her."

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Inyang Asibong, responded immediately by going to the scene personally with an ambulance to handle the situation.

On arrival, she took the mother and the baby to the General Hospital, Calabar for expert medical attention.

Dr. Asibong also promised that after their discharge from the hospital, the mother and child will be
referred to a psychiatric hospital.

The mentally ill lady refused to go to the hospital. She later agreed after a friend of hers, another mentally ill woman, came and begged her.

Mayar Mohammad, a 17-year-old Egyptian teenage girl, died due to
severe bleeding and a drop in blood circulation after she was subjected to an illegal female genital mutilation (FGM) surgery in a private hospital in Suez, Egypt.

According to local media reports, the girl’s mother is a nurse, while their late father was a
surgeon. So you'd expect the mother to know not to let her daughter go through such backward torture, all in the name of tradition.

FGM has been banned in Egypt since 2007, but the brutal practice is still being practiced illegally in the country and especially in rural
areas.

In February, the United Nations Children Fund (Unicef) said in its annual report on FGM that Egypt witnessed a significant decline of FGM prevalence but still 48% of girls underwent FGM in 2014 compared with 78% in 2008.

The death of Mayar was the first reported in three years and authorities immediately ordered the closure of the private hospital.

Egypt’s governmental National Council for Women condemned the unlawful surgery and said in a statement that “performers of such criminal operations must face strict penalties.”

Abdul Abdelaty, a human rights lawyer during an interview with the Middle East Eye website said that even though the operation is illegal, it is really cheap. “Doctors ask between $1 and $15 to do it (FGM) because there is a high demand and a constant flow of cash. The economic aspect – it is really important, and it can be stopped only by enforcing the law,” the lawyer said.

According to Gulf News website, friends of the 17-year-old victim blamed her mother for subjecting her own daughter to FGM.

The teenager's classmate, Rawan Al Jamal said in a Facebook post:
“Mayar died due to ignorance and backwardness of her mother, who regarded her daughter as guilty only because she was created a female.”

According to a Twitter user https://mobile.twitter.com/nazirgaladanchi/status/737550463210389504 who shared the photo on social media, a woman has fallen victim to Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) in Katsina State, after taking Septrin Sulphamethoxazole tablet as the adverse drug reaction turned her to black.

"This is why self medication is usually not recommended. If you report a reaction at a hospital , it is usually written in BOLD in front of ur hospital file so subsequently, no one would prescribe that drug to you.

"Some of us are not told and we don't ask questions at the hospital so we don't know. Next thing we are ill and self medicated and go ahead to get that same drug we react to, unknowingly. Drug use awareness needs serious promotion!," an Instagram user commented on the viral photo.

A heartless man has been dragged to court after he defiled his girlfriend before ordering his friend to
r*pe her while he watched.

Zenzo Sibanda (32) of Badala Village, Zimbabwe and his friend Lethubuhle Ncube last week appeared before Inyathi magistrate Mr Stephen Ndlovu facing two counts of r*pe. They were remanded in custody to 10 June for trial. According to Sunday News, the
prosecutor, Mr Zivanai Hlomayi said on 15 May 2016 at around 7am the
woman was alone at
her home when Sibanda and Ncube arrived and lured her to a nearby bush.

“Since Sibanda is the woman’s boyfriend, she did not suspect anything and thus she did not resist.

While in the bush, Sibanda took an electric cable and assaulted her several times all over her body accusing her of prostitution.

“After that he gave his friend Ncube a 25 cent bond coin and ordered him to go and buy condoms at Badala shop and he did,” he said.

It was revealed before the court that Ncube came back with the condoms Sibanda ordered the woman to get tree branches and spread them on the ground, which she did in fear of being assaulted since Sibanda was still holding the electric cable .

“Sibanda then asked the woman to choose between being assaulted the whole day with an electric cable or having sexual
intercourse with both Sibanda and his friend. The woman pleaded with Sibanda and he threatened to burn her with petrol.

“Sibanda ordered the woman to lie on the ground where she had spread the tree branches and also told Ncube to wear a condom and have sexual intercourse with the woman. He threatened to assault Ncube with an electric cable if he refused to comply so he had sex with Sibanda’s girlfriend,” said Mr Hlomayi.

“Sibanda watched Ncube as he had sexual intercourse with his girlfriend. He then ordered his girlfriend to hold a tree trunk while
bending down before
he had sexual intercourse with her,
without protection
and without her consent.

“After that he then ordered Ncube to have sexual intercourse with the woman for the second time. The woman tried to dress up but Sibanda stopped her,” said Mr Hlomayi.

The court heard that Sibanda ordered Ncube to put on a condom and have sexual intercourse with the woman again. Since he was holding the electric cable Ncube complied and he had sexual intercourse with the woman without her consent.

“After that Sibanda took the woman to the tree trunk and had sexual intercourse with her for the second time, without her consent and without protection.

“He then took the woman to his house where he kept her for three days but did not rape her again. After three days the woman managed to escape and went back to her village where she related the ordeal to her aunt,” said Mr Hlomayi.

They reported the matter at Inyathi Police Station and the woman was referred to Inyathi District Hospital for medical examination.

A teenage girl who was brutally raped by at least 33 men in Brazil has finally spoken out about the sad ordeal. In video that circulated online, the girl is filmed being brutally r*ped by 33 men who wanted to
