When will the goat be strong enough to kill a leopard? Would remain not just a proverb but a rhetorical question because a generation of confused youths have allowed themselves to be mere pawns on the political chess board in our society. What I find disheartening is the seeming inexorable rise in demonstrations and protests among the youths, in solidarity to those politicians supposedly painted with the tar of corruption. It is becoming very difficult to fathom the bone of contention of some species of humanity in youth forms, whose stock-in-trade is to barricade the streets and institutions to wail in support of our permissive and profligate politicians, regardless of what the person is being accused of. Could such acts of unflattering servility be passed as fool hardiness or unquantifiable stupidity? The one that defies not just logic but also philosophy was the inexcusable manner a generation afflicted by the worst side of corruption, last week Tuesday, barricaded the National Assembly complex and queued desperately like pipeline vandals in support of the embattled senate president, Bukola Saraki, who is facing trial over 13 count charges, including false and improper declaration of assets to CCB when he was governor of Kwara State— 2003-2011. After watching the show of shame, I weeped for those faceless and incapacitated youths of my generation who could best be described as “slaves in love with their chains”. They have without any modicum of shame allowed themselves to be used as an object of public ridicule by desperate politicians who are on their way to public odium. To those incongruous and venile youths, who have not only sold their conscience but have constituted themselves as crass supporters of impunity— nothing is wrong in such social opprobrium, as long as something will come out of it, no matter how meagre it is. Stupidity is when we blame our past leaders for dumping us in this hell hole we found ourselves but when such persons are called to come answer corruption charges against them, we make an abrute and complete reversal of attitude, opinion or position in support of the accused persons. It is an unmitigated irony that our political class who widened the inequality gap in the country to a large degree and those who are yet to find us a place in our national polity are the ones we have allowed to always toss us around like the devil’s mail bag. To those youths that obstreperously trooped out in support of the embattled Saraki, given their demeanor, it is justifiably stupefied that mentality of wretchedness was at play. With such mentality of wretchedness, will the goat (which has been existing in the same world with the leopard) ever be strong enough to kill the leopard? https://www.today.ng/blog/21628/a-generation-of-confused-youths/ Lalasticlala

The Presidency on Monday explained why President Muhammadu Buhari discusses major policy thrust of government and his policies with the international media rather than its local counterpart, stressing that the world is a global village hence where Buhari speaks should not really matter. The President has come under intense criticism for always disclosing to the foreign media issues Nigerians back home are yet to know about regarding his government, including publishing an op-ed article in the Washington Post. This trend repeated itself last week in New York where the President opened up to foreign journalists about his intention to head the Petroleum Ministry. But clarifying what brought about the development, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, told WE 106.3 FM’s Morning Mojo programme monitored by DAILY POST in Abuja that, “when he (Buhari) goes abroad we always schedule the international media to have an engagement with him. That may not always be easy when he is at home because he has so many things to attend to. “But we make it a point of duty that every trip abroad, we schedule the international media to speak with him and that is why in France, in New York, in South Africa, wherever he has gone, he will always speak with the media and of course because the world is a global village,” he stated. Admitting that he is aware of the criticisms that come with the President’s resort to the foreign media, the presidential spokesman said: “it sort of pays us to say the world is a global village when we like and when we don’t like we criticize it. But that the world is a global village, we accept. “Wherever he (the President) says it does not matter; all that matters is that he has said it. The truth is that, whatever he says gets back to us in Nigeria. So does it matter where he says it?” he asked. Speaking further on why it is easier for the President to speak with the international media during his trips offshore, he said: “You know that in the past four months, he had been doing the work; trying to reset the foundation for a lot of things. As ministers come, you know there will be more devolvement and some of those things he had being doing personally, ministers will begin to do. “He will then have freer time with which to take on the media here in Nigeria. He has been very very busy. The Media Chat will resume soon. You can be sure that when that Media Chat resumes, it is going to be free.” http://dailypost.ng/2015/10/05/why-buhari-interacts-more-with-foreign-media-presidency/ Lalasticlala |

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), yesterday, denied playing any part in the process that led to the issuance of Nigerian Visa to the wanted ISIS chief, Ahmed Al Assir in Lebanon, even as it said two men connected to Al Assir, who he was coming to visit in Nigeria, had been arrested in Kano and immediately handed over to the National Security Adviser, General Babagana Monguno (rtd). https://www.nigeriacommunicationsweek.com.ng/sites/default/files/styles/image-standard/public/field/image/ISIS%20chief%2C%20Ahmed%20Al%20Assir.jpg?itok=IZvR6DC6 Wanted ISIS chief, Ahmed Al Assir The Comptroller-General of the NIS, Martin Abeshi, who debunked any complicity of the Service, while speaking at a news conference in Abuja, said “From the record available, the Immigration Service did not issue that visa. It might be the officials of the foreign affairs ministry because they also issue visa on our behalf.” Abeshi however, said the NIS went into action to arrest those connected to Al Assir immediately it gathered an intelligence that he was coming to Nigeria. Said the NIS boss: “When we were told that the person [Al Assir] was heading to Nigeria, the people the man was coming to visit were identified by our men. Our officers in Kano went into action and arrested the two of them immediately and handed them over to the National Security Adviser.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/those-who-invited-wanted-isis-chief-to-nigeria-arrested-in-kano/ |

After a long wait, President Muhammadu Buhari finally submitted the list of his cabinet to the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly. The president has been at the receiving end of harsh criticisms by angry Nigerians over his ‘deliberate’ refusal to unveil his ministers three months after assuming office. The president had anchored the reason for the delay on the ground that he needed time to select those who were credible and trustworthy to run the affairs of the nation with him. DAILY POST reports that the list, which was submitted to the senate president, Bukola Saraki yesterday by Buhari’s Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters, Itan Enang would be officially made public at the next plenary on Tuesday. However, report has it that among those penned down for ministerial appointments were, immediate past governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, former Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi, former lawmaker, Chris Ngige and erstwhile governor of old Anambra State, Ogbonaya Onu, among others. However, sources told DAILY POST that Chris Ngige’s name came in at the eleventh hour. According to a top presidency source, President Buhari, who has been constantly accused of marginalizing Ndigbo over their refusal to support him during the election, didn’t have it in mind to appoint Ngige. The source told DAILY POST that Ngige’s appointment was done to mainly compensate Ndigbo. “Ngige was not part of the first list of people compiled, I can tell you that. His name came at the eleventh hour. The president had a change of mind because of the complaints in many quarters that he was punishing the south east region because of their refusal to vote for him during the election. “It took the intervention of some close associates and aides for the appointment of Ngige.” Asked if president Buhari was truly angry with the south easterners because of the outcome of the election, the source said the president had nothing against them. “See, that notion is wrong. The good thing is that Buhari has won the election and that is it. Where the vote came from is not the main issue now. Remember, he said he belongs to nobody and belongs to everybody,” the source added. http://dailypost.ng/2015/10/01/ministerial-list-how-buharis-last-minute-change-favoured-ngige/ Lalasticlala |

President Muhammadu Buhari explained this morning why he eventually sent the list of the first batch of his ministerial nominees to the National Assembly for the Senate late yesterday. According to him, the procedure for handing over to his government by the immediate past administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan contributed to the delay in the appointment of cabinet members. Buhari who made this explanation in a nationwide address broadcast live on national television and radio station at 7am this morning noted that he was not unaware of the anxiety and heat generated both home and abroad by the delay in appointing his ministers. He also hinted that he was yet to complete the nomination of ministers, saying he would forward additional names to the Senate for confirmation in due course. “Anyway, the wait is over. The first set of names for ministerial nominees for confirmation has been sent to the Senate. Subsequent lists will be forwarded in due course. Impatience is not a virtue,” the president stated. Explaining the delay in ministerial appointments, President Buhari restated that his administration inherited a plethora of problems that are urgently seeking to be quickly addressed if the country must move forward in terms of growth and development. He said, “Fellow Nigerians, there has been a lot of anxiety and impatience over the apparent delay in the announcement of ministers. There is no cause to be anxious. Our government set out to do things methodically and properly. “We received the handing over notes from the outgoing government only four days before taking over. Consequently, the Joda Transition Committee submitted its report on the reorganization of federal government structure after studying the handover notes. “It would have been haphazard to announce ministers when the government had not finalized the number of ministries to optimally carry the burden of governance. “Order is more vital than speed. Careful and deliberate decisions after consultations get far better results. And better results for our country is what the APC government for change is all about.” Buhari reiterated that he bore no grudges against anybody and that his government was not after anyone. “As I said in my inaugural speech, I bear no ill will against anyone on past events. Nobody should fear anything from me. We are not after anyone. People should only fear the consequences of their actions. I hereby invite everyone, whatever his or her political view, to join me in working for the nation. he stated. On the problems his government inherited, Buhari said, “We have seen in the last few years how huge resources were mismanaged, squandered and wasted. The new APC government is embarking on a clean up, introducing prudence and probity in public financing. “At an early stage, the federal government addressed the issue of salary arrears in many states, a situation capable of degenerating into social unrest. The APC government stepped in to provide short-term support to the owing states and enabled them to pay off the backlog and restore the livelihood of millions of Nigerians”. Buhari, however, reassured Nigerians of his administration’s resolve to meticulously execute projects that would impact positively on their lives, adding that the country cannot afford any avoidable mistakes. He implored Nigerians to be patient and team up with the government to deliver on the dividend of democracy to the citizens, irrespective of their political affiliation. “I would like to end my address this morning on our agenda for Change. Change does not just happen. You and I and all of us must appreciate that we all have our part to play if we want to bring change about,” he stated. The president noted that for positive change to take place, Nigerians must be ready to change their lawless habits and attitudes to public office and other government establishments. “We must change our lawless habits, our attitude to public office and public trust. We must change our unruly behaviour in schools, hospitals, market places, motor parks, on the roads, in homes and offices. To bring about change, we must change ourselves by being law-abiding citizens,” he noted. Buhari further noted that October 1 was a day for joy and celebrations for Nigerians despite the circumstances they find themselves “because it is the day, 55 years ago, we liberated ourselves from the shackles of colonialism and began our long march to nationhood and to greatness. “No temporary problems or passing challenges should stop us from honoring this day. Let us remind ourselves of the gifts God has given us. Our Creator has bequeathed to us numbers – Nigeria is the ninth most populated country on the planet,” he added. The president, however, observed that in spite of all the attributes of a great nation, Nigeria is not there yet because of the one commodity it had been unable to exploit to the fullest – unity of purpose. “This would have enabled us to achieve not only more orderly political evolution and integration but also continuity and economic progress. Countries far less endowed have made greater economic progress by greater coherence and unity of purpose. “Nonetheless, that we have remained together is an achievement we should all appreciate and try to consolidate. We have witnessed this year a change in our democratic development. The fact that an opposition party replaced an entrenched government in a free and fair election is indicative of the deeper roots of our democratic system. “Whatever one’s views are, Nigerians must thank former President Jonathan for not digging-in in the face of defeat and thereby saving the country untold consequences,” Buhari said. http://leadership.ng/news/464400/independence-speech-why-i-sent-ministerial-list-late-pmb ------------------------------ Please Note: This was made available to media houses before the 7am broadcast to commemorate the country’s 55th Independence anniversary.
