NIGERIA POLICE ARREST AND HAND OVER WANTED BOKO HARAM TERRORIST IN ONDO STATE

The Nigeria Police Ondo State Command on Sunday 24th September 2017 at about 2.00pm, arrested a declared wanted Boko Boko Haram Terrorist group member, Idris Ibrahim Babawo aged 42, that goes by the names “Idiko” and “Nagada”.

He is believed to be on serial number 165 on the wanted Boko Haram terrorists list. He was handed over to the 32 Brigade, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, at about 2.00pm today Monday 25th September 2017 by the Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Police.

Preliminary investigation shows that the terrorist kingpin hailed from Chinade village, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State. He escaped from the North East due to military onslaught on the terrorists with a view evade arrest and prosecution. But nemesis caught up with him.

Crew training and experience also played a role. The FAPLA tank crews had no idea what they were doing and frankly, no business being in a tank.

In his book "The Cuban Intervention in Angola", Edward Georges mentions that FAPLA was so short on tank crews sometimes they received their first crash training only hours before being sent into battle.

As opposed to the Ratel 90 and Eland 90 crews who were held to much higher standards, had to complete thorough gunnery training, and had logged considerable time on their weapons.

Any piece of equipment is only as good as the men behind it.

Near the end of South Africa's involment in the conflict 88-89. Their tank crews were of better quality than their infantry.

The STF deployed in an East Rand township at the times of the pre-94 election violence.

Those were members of the Internal stability division also known as DIS. They wore camouflage and berets like the STF.

Their vehicles had camouflage paintings too. They were formed in the early 90s as violence increased in SA leading to the 94 elections.

Yup, 105mm shells means less ammunition is carried leaving the vehicle in need of more ammunition supply trucks, recovery vehicles etc. Not ideal for long range raiding forces.

The 76 is no longer powerful enough against modern armour that's why the SANDF downgraded the Rooikat 76 to a fire support vehicle not the tank destroyer it was initially designed to be. If you had to take it to a modern conventional war then the 105 is the way to go.

There's a project to replace the Rooikat.

It was never a tank destroyer. The gun on the Rooikat will be effective against many targets found in SSA like technicals, IFVs, APCs etc.

upgrading to 105mm will increase the tail. Remember ops are planned around logistics. A 105mm round means the vehicle will carry less ammunition this equates to more support vehicles. An upgrade should be the proposed hybrid drive and maybe new ammunition specifically for fire support against dismounted infantry.


Focus should be on a new Main battle tank(120mm or plus gun).

It is a joint-venture the markets the product. It enables Denel to penetrate certain markets. Wouldn't it be futile for Denel dynamics to market the same product?

The money made from these sales goes back to R & D. The UAE air force has been seeking to add a motor and MW radar seeker. Increases the range to around 200km depending on release height. Also enables the weapon to attack moving targets like vehicles.

Denel can't fund some of these deals alone. Majority of the components of the system are made in SA.

Quite correct. There is absolutely no need for a new presidential aircraft. Especially when the current one is in robust health and the SAAF has more pressing need for those funds.

I actually think VIP Transport for the Presidency should be moved out of the SAAF. If it stays, the Presidency should pay for it, instead of SAAF's operational funds.
Or we go the same way as our Pommie cousins: a modular fleet like the Airbus MRTT which does RAF cargo duty, Air2Air refuelling and can be fitted with the VIP module when requested (and paid for) by 10 Downing Street.

Problem is the "unwillingness to share".

If budget allowed I'd say we acquire 3 MRTT. One fitted for EW purposes. They'd be useful in personnel transportation too.

My guess is that the Ingwe similar to the BILL 2 ATGM which had over the top attack capabilities is too heavy. The BILL 2 was offered to the SANDF.

Elite units can not be compared as they are utilised differently and based on each country's requirements. Only aspect with any degree of commonality is Selection. Recce Selection, for example, is tougher than SAS Selection, on the criterion the 2 units choose to make public. The post-Selection training that the 2 units embark on is classified, and I have no doubt the SAS version in superior.

It is worth noting that no one (Soviets, PLAN, FAPLA, MK and Cubans) knew about its existence until the first shells fell on them.

Also worth noting that the Recce spotters were providing target coordinates behind enemy lines which frustrated the Cuban alliance because they knew the Recces were there but couldn't find them for days in an open grassveld.

There were actually artillery spotters on the ground.
