Catholic Bishops of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province, yesterday, faulted the alleged selective administration of justice by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government, saying this development has affected the country’s image in the international community. The bishops, from Ibadan Archdiocese, Ilorin, Ondo, Oyo, Ekiti and Osogbo Dioceses, in a communiqué after their meeting at the Domus Pacis Pastoral Institute, Igoba in Akure, noted that the current waves of insecurity in the country are an indication that the Federal Government has failed to address the criminal elements wreaking havoc in the country. The communiqué was signed by the province Chairman and Secretary, Rev. Gabriel Abegunrin and Rev. Akin Oyejola, respectively. The bishops lamented that the country, under the present administration, has lost its soul and that the insecurity pervading the land, dwindling economy and others are all indices of a failed country, needing an urgent revival. They also tackled the Presidency for attacking the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, for his revelations to the United States Congress on the state of things in the country, insisting that Kukah made patriotic and commendable points with verifiable data on the unlawful persecution of Nigerians. The communiqué reads: “Nigeria, our country, seems to have lost its very soul because it is no longer a healthy entity. The good health of any nation consists in its capacity to offer its citizens a territory where they can feel at home, feel secure and enjoy the necessities of life. “This, unfortunately, is no longer the case in our dear country, Nigeria, where, armed conflicts, armed robbery, kidnapping for ransom, insurgency, banditry and extrajudicial killing persist as the order of the day. When a nation loses its soul, its people lose the cohesive elements of human relationships. A nation that has lost its soul is characterised by inept, uncaring leadership which functions by selective allocation of posts, privileges and resources and by selective application of justice. It is characterised by leaders who, rather than care for the citizens of the country, simply exploit and denigrate them.” On the presidency’s response to Bishop Kukah, the bishops said: “Bishop Kukah, in his patriotic and frank presentation called attention to some verifiable data and statistics about the Nigerian situation on that privileged international platform. He spoke for authentic Christians and Muslims who are under persecution. No doubt, he intended to solicit the support of that forum which many Nigerians believe holds the promise of some assistance and relief from our current national crises. “The Federal Government, however, has characteristically gone up in arms against the person of Bishop Kukah and his purpose. It is commonly said that when there is a problem in a democracy, more democracy is needed to solve it. Sadly enough, our current federal government does not seem to subscribe to this.” “For the sake of our democracy, that right, exercised with responsibility, must be protected. We support Bishop Kukah in his effort to unveil the truth about the Nigerian situation to ameliorate things. We call on the Federal Government to learn not to see criticism as an attack or a crime.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/state-of-the-nation-catholic-bishops-tackle-buhari-over-selective-administration-of-justice/ |
Equities tumbled across markets around the world on Tuesday on downbeat investor sentiment coming from the scare that a jump in coronavirus cases would impede the world’s economy. In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index dropped 1 per cent to its six-month low, the same rate as its Hong Kong peer, Hang Seng. U.S. Dow Jones Industrial Average and UK’S FTSE 100 Index had the day before lost 2 per cent. However, European stocks began Tuesday on a bright note, with the FTSE 100 trading up 1 per cent, just as the rest of principal European indexes recorded advances also. Investors were faced with scare as the coronavirus renewed its strength in a couple of countries on the back of the sweep of the new Delta variant, forcing shares down on Monday. Equities in Japan, Asia’s second largest economy, have seen five slides in a trot on worries about the advance of the variant made worse by the prospects of this year’s Olympics to be hosted in Tokyo could compound the crisis. “Investors are concerned that the rapid spread of the Delta variant will derail the trajectory of the global recovery, notably in Asia which still has relatively low vaccination rates and where some widely used vaccines do not appear overly effective against it,” Jeff Halley, senior market analyst at broker Oanda told the BBC. “I believe we are in for a messy week ahead, with markets being driven around by sentiment and not data, as the international economic calendar is very quiet.” In the UK, businesses are scaling back opening hours and suspending shop operations, and it is probable they could be made to curb production, with workers compelled to self-isolate in the wake of an alert by the NHS Covid-19 app. Susannah Streeter, markets analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said on Monday, “optimism which had been on the horizon just a few weeks ago has again been obscured by dark clouds, especially with the snap decision to enforce a 10-day quarantine for arrivals from France.” “With some scientists warning that infections could reach 200,000 a day by September, there is now a feeling that the UK could be staring at a fresh autumn lockdown,” she added. U.S. Joe Biden told Americans at a press conference to take vaccination to keep the economy open. Fears are still palpable among American investors after Los Angeles announced an indoor mask order again in the weekend as coronavirus cases of the Delta variant climb further. The Dow Jones Industrial Average’s fall of 2.1 percent on Monday marked the index’s worst moment since the year turned. “That’s not how I judge economic growth,” Biden said of how markets fared on Monday. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/474716-global-shares-tumble-as-new-covid-wave-stokes-recovery-fears.html |
RESIDENTS of Umiaghwa, Okpe Local Government Area, Delta State, have bitterly complained about the dilapidated road to the agrarian community abandoned in 2018 by the Niger-Delta Development Commission, NDDC, and a six-classroom built by the interventionist agency that collapsed, two years ago. The villagers said they were forced to raise the alarm, as the shrunken school building and ramshackle road were beginning to have negative effect on the children and people of the community. Pupils crammed like sardine in one class – Itie, inhabitant An inhabitant, Adam Itie, who spoke to NDV, said: “The primary school building by NDDC contractor was actually started in 1996, deserted for over 12 years until they started building again and it took many years before it was finally completed. Then one morning, I was at home when I heard a loud noise in the community and when I dashed out, I saw children and teachers running, that was when I was told that the roof of the building had come down on them, luckily, no one was hurt. “We are now managing the remaining four classroom blocks built by Delta State Oil- Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, we now put pupils in the same classroom not minding their class. Primaries one, two and part of three share one class and part of three, four and five share a class, not to talk of primary six and staff room,” he added. Only two govt. teachers in Delta primary school –Johnson, resident Another resident, Mr. Anagbo Johnson, recalled how the teachers had to cope on resumption after the long Covid-19 pandemic holiday, saying: “Some of the pupils were sent home to create the space for keeping safe distance and we did that for a long time before we stabilised things. “Besides the collapsed building, the school does not have teachers, we have only two government teachers and the other two teachers were employed by the President-General of Okpe Union, North America, OUNA, Mr. Edwin Ederaine,” he lamented. People boycott Umiaghwa owing to bad road –David, community chair The community chairman, Mr. Idamakozi David, said their biggest fear in the community remains the uncompleted NDDC’s Oviri Okpe- Umiaghwa road project that was abandoned in 2018, urging the agency to compel the contracting firm handling the project to return to site, as people were running away from the community because of deplorable road. “When the Umiaghwa road contract was awarded, we remember hosting a party, but as I speak to you, the road is completely bad, you hardly see a vehicle come to the community, especially this rainy season, and the only way to come into this village is a bush path that only motorcycles can go through, which you (NDV reporter) have experienced, today.” The three-hour journey from Sapele to the community with a motorcycle, which practically swarm through large patches of pool of water that reformatted his white shirt with mud is a story for another day. How we are coping –Mrs. Eyurodame, mother A mother, Mrs. Onahite Eyurodame, who also pleaded with NDDC to come to their aid of the people, said: “You cannot come into this community with a vehicle during this period of rain, except when the rain has stopped.” Mrs. Eyurodame said: “When we need some basic things like salt, meat and other things, we select some people who go to the town and buy them for us. Sometimes, it is not always possible, with no communication to reach out to anybody, the two or three nominated ones just sit at the outskirts of the town waiting and hoping a motorcycle rider comes through the bush path and we negotiate.” Contractor said no cash from NDDC –Akpomieman, youth leader Youth leader, Kingdom Akpomieman, said the community had sent a delegation to the road project contractor, who responded that NDDC was yet to release funds for commencement of work. Akpomieman called on NDDC and President Muhammadu Buhari to help the community, saying: “We want the contractor back to site to complete this project so that we can at least go out of our community and see the world.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/delta-community-cries-out-over-ramshackle-nddc-road-collapsed-classroom/ |
MORE facts have emerged as to what led to the recent clashes between security agents and hoodlums that rocked the Tin-Can Island Port area of Apapa, two weeks ago. It was gathered that both parties tried to outwit each other over the control of the extortion points along the port access roads. Confirming the development, a former president, National Association of Road Transport Owners, NARTO, Mr. Mohammed Inuwa, said the clash occurred while he was at a meeting in Abuja, adding that the information he got was that security agents and some members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, had a face-off over the control of extortion points along the port access roads. Inuwa said: “I was not around when the crisis was on, I was at the Abuja National Executive Council meeting, it was when I got back that I was told there were clashes between security agents and hoodlums. “That is the information I got. Just the other day when I was plying the port access road, I counted 11 checkpoints, between Trebor roundabout and Abuja at Tin-Can first gate, manned by both security agents and other hoodlums. “The traffic from the Mile 2 end of the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway is responsible for the clashes being experienced at the Tin-Can end of the port access roads.” Also corroborating Inuwa’s position, the President of the Association of Maritime Transport Owners, AMATO, Mr. Remi Ogunbgemi, said that he heard about the clash between security agents and hoodlums over the control of extortion points along the port access roads. Ogunbgemi said: “I got similar information and you know that most of the challenges we have been having are as a result of the love for money. So, it is not a surprise to me that such things happen because even the security operatives, who ought to be upright in their dealings, are deeply involved in the open collection of money. “They are just here for their interest, they are not interested in how there can be sanity and orderliness.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/apapa-gridlock-security-agents-hoodlums-clash-over-control-of-extortion-points/ |

Following the upgrade of Delta State Polytechnic Ozoro, to Delta State University of Science and Technology, by the State Government, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics, SSANIP Ozoro Branch, has appealed to the State Government to absorb all qualified and confirmed staff of the Polytechnic into the University taking off September this year. The union in a statement by its Chairman, Comrade Ighosewe Efetie and Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Inonoje, after a well-attended emergency congress of the body, urged the Government to jettison the idea of Private Public Partnership, PPP and allow the University operate as a full fledge Government University for the sake of the poor masses who cannot afford high school fees of the proposed PPP. “We appreciate the Delta State Government ably led by Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, firstly for finding our Institution, Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro amongst other sister Polytechnics in the State worthy for an upgrade to University status. “Secondly, for his timely intention to provide quality education to all and sundry. We also appreciate the Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for the appointment of the former Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Jacob Snapp Oboreh as Vice-Chancellor and Mrs Stella Mouboghare as Registrar for the take-off of the University not minding the present global financial crisis. “Congress however frowns at the complexity of absorption form which has some ambiguity and absolutely different from that of the other institutions that have been upgraded. “Congress observed that as against what was in practice during the upgrade of College of Agriculture to the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, there is a clear departure from the proper administrative procedure for absorbing confirmed staff of the institution. “Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro was found worthy because it was assumed to have the capacity to run as a Polytechnic, so also the Delta State University of Science and Technology. “We urge the University management team to embrace the line of inclusive dialogue so as to engage the Unions with a view to give a clearer picture that heralds the Public-Private- Partnership, PPP in the upgrade. Anything otherwise may affect the good working relationship before, during and after the whole exercise. “The perceived bureaucratic bottleneck introduced for the absorption of staff that have worked tirelessly for years in order to prepare the Institution for such an epoch upgrade be removed. And wish to request that all confirmed staff of Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro be given their rightful positions in line with existing Labour Law and Rules of engagement. “That the letter of absorption is issued to all confirmed staff of the Polytechnic, Ozoro who in turn will decide through a correspondence of acceptance or otherwise. Consequently, the ongoing administrative process of absorption is put on hold, despite the submission of absorption forms pending when a better clarification on the matter is addressed. “The fear of staff is that the conditional absorption forms introduced may lead to heavy job loss and displacement of staff who have worked for more than 19 years dedicatedly to build and maintain the existing Polytechnic, which made it attractive for Government to upgrade it to a University. “It is being speculated that the existing confirmed Staff whose salaries are in DTSG payroll will be returned to the University who will, in turn, be paying the salaries from internally generated revenue of the University. “This is a University that will kick-off from September/October 2021 academic year that does not even know the numbers of students that will apply for admission which will determine the internally generated revenue. “Owing to the aforementioned, we salute the efforts of Government towards achieving this wonderful landmark in the educational sector, and prayerfully request that the above issues be critically looked into in other not to distrust the industrial harmony already in existence between Unions and Government”. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/absorb-qualified-confirmed-staff-into-new-varsity-ssanip-appeals-to-delta-govt/ |

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, says the house is working toward amending the National Health Act to address gaps in accessing healthcare, including funding for gunshot victims. He said this at the opening of the 44 /45 Annual General and Scientific Meeting (AGSM) of the West African College of Physicians (WACP), Nigeria Chapter in Abuja. Gbajabiamila, who was represented by Hon. Tanko Sununu, the Chairman, House Committee on Health, said that in the amended act, provisions were made for healthcare service providers to claim funds used to treat gunshot victims during emergencies. He said the consideration was important as increasing cases of ‘no payment, no service’ for victims of gunshot wounds posed serious concern. According to him, Nigeria’s health indices remain poor and the national assembly will play its role through legislation to help address the causes of poor health delivery system in the country, one of which is accessibility. He said “in the next days to come, we will consider the amendment of the National Health Act which provides the basic framework upon which healthcare in the country is developed. “The house of representatives is waiting for concurrence from the executive arm of government on the issue of emergency treatment for gunshot victims. We have tried to address the issue of gunshot injuries in the amended Health Act. “In the previous Act, there was a gap on how this type of emergency should be addressed when presented at the hospital. The source of payment and services rendered to gunshot victims has become a worrisome issue. “In the amended Health Act, we tried to proffer solutions where practitioners can claim the bills for services rendered to a gunshot victim. This will allow victims to access emergency healthcare promptly.” The speaker, who noted that the country was currently facing three major crises of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), insecurity and dwindling resources, added that the crises had significantly impacted health indices. He said “NASS is working toward addressing the challenges by providing effective legislation, oversight, and representation. “When the COVID-19 came to Nigeria we only had four laboratories to diagnose the virus but due to active budgetary allocation, we now have more than 130 laboratories nationwide that can be used to diagnose the virus. “We are also trying to address issues affecting the health sector by making healthcare through the health insurance scheme mandatory in the country. “The national assembly passed the bill already and we are hoping that the executive arm assent to the bill so that every Nigerian will have a basic minimum package that he or she can use to sustain health. “The Basic Healthcare Provision Fund will not only come with a minimum package, but will also improve the health sector’s readiness to address emergencies. “We are also considering the Infectious Diseases Control Bill which tries to provide for emergency preparedness in the country.” The speaker, while commending the WACP, assured that the NASS would consider all recommendations made by it after its AGSM and utilise it to influence legislative activities. The Minister of State for Health, Dr Olurunnimbe Mamora, listed the causes of Nigeria’s poor health indices to include inadequate human resources, poor data management and limited funding to scale up coverage of evidence-based interventions. Others are the urban/rural skilled distribution of frontline workers, brain drain of skilled health workers to the western world, and COVID-19, which further compounded the health challenges in the country. Mamora called on Ministries Departments and Agencies and other health partners to support efforts toward improving the system and providing quality services to citizens. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other stakeholders at the event charged the WACP, Nigeria chapter, to utilise the meeting in charting a way forward for the health sector and proffer workable solutions. The FCT Minister, Mr Muhammad Bello, represented by the acting Secretary for Health, Dr Muhammed Kawu, and the Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib, represented by Dr Usman Adamu, Director, Primary Health Care Systems Development of the agency were present. Others were the WACP President represented by the WACP Director of Grants, Nigeria Chapter, Dr Benjamin Ogochukwu, and Chief Medical Directors, among other stakeholders. The theme of the 2021 WACP meeting is: “Nigeria’s Health Indices; Challenges and Prospects in a Contemporary World”. The WACP is a professional body for medical specialists within the West African sub-region. The medical specialists included doctors, physicians, and nurses. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested two persons conveying suspected adulterated Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK) concealed in bags at two different locations in Anambra. Mr Vincent Ogu, the newly deployed NSCDC Commandant in Anambra disclosed this while parading the suspects at the command’s headquarters on Tuesday in Awka. Ogu said that the suspects; Kalu Chukwuebuka and Solomon Ogbonna were arrested at about 7.30 pm in Ihiala area of the state on June 30, 2021. According to him, the duo was conveying 3,000 litres of substance suspected to be fake DPK in a white Nissan Caravan bus with registration number; Anambra, AWK419YD. The NSCDC official also said that his men equally intercepted another white Ford bus with registration number Lagos EKY 827YD and inscription: Christ-Like Family Movement (CFM) about 6 pm on June 6, 2021, conveying yet to be ascertained quantity of adulterated DPK. He said that the occupants of the second bus on sighting the men of the Anti Vandalism Squad of the corps at Okija, abandoned their vehicle and ran into the bush. Ogu said that the arrested suspects still undergoing interrogation would be arraigned in court as soon as the investigation was concluded. The NSCDC official hinted that the command is currently training the Female Squad and Special Squad inline with the directive of the Commandant General of the Corps, Mr Abubakar Audi. He explained that after the training, the Female Squad would be deployed to beef up security in schools across the state, while the Special Squad would ensure rapid security response across the state. Ogu assured the people of the area of more robust security services and advised criminal elements to relocate from Anambra. Kalu Chukwuebuka, one of the suspects told journalists that he loaded the DPK from Irete Community in Owerri West Area of Imo and was heading to Onitsha before his arrest. “That movement was my first time conveying such items and I never knew it was unlawful to carry diesel in bags,” he claimed. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/nscdc-nab-2-suspects-with-adulterated-kerosene-in-anambra/ |
The main campus of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) , Akoka, has been thrown into panic as some unidentified students have reportedly contracted the coronavirus disease. The university’s vice-chancellor, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, who neither confirmed nor denied the report, told PREMIUM TIMES on the phone that the institution’s management was in a meeting over the matter. Mr Ogundipe said the institution would soon make its position on the issue public. “We are already in a management meeting. We will speak on it soon,” he told our reporter. Meanwhile, this newspaper’s independent findings revealed that a sophomore female Law student is one of the confirmed cases. “We learnt she was taken to the counselling unit before being taken to an isolation centre,” a classmate of the infected student, who does not want to be quoted, told our reporter on the phone. Other students also said the university authorities became more forceful and strict with the enforcement of coronavirus protocols on Tuesday. Departmental heads and deans of faculties were said to be moving round the classrooms to ensure compliance with the use of nose masks and sanitisers. The dean of the faculty of law, Ige Bolodeoku, was said to have moved from one classroom to another at the faculty to compel both staff and students to obey the rules. He was said to be visibly worried and threatened anyone found loittering the corridors and those without masks that he would send them out of the university. Another student, who also craved anonymity, said; “Earlier this morning, an official of the law student society (LSS) had told people to put on their masks. The LASS official’s name is Aisha, and she told everyone to be careful because of COVID-19. “So by 9a.m, we were having CIL 212 (Law of Contract) when the dean entered the classroom and chased some students out for not using nose masks. Even those who did not use theirs properly were asked to move out.” Sanwo-Olu’s warning The development is a confirmation of the notice issued on Sunday by the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who threatened to sanction anyone found to have flouted the established protocol to curb the spread of the infection in the state. Mr Sanwo-Olu in a statement personally signed by him said the third wave of the infection was imminent in the country. He gave statistics of the gradual rise in the number of cases with an increase from about one per cent positive results of tested specimens as of the end of June to about six per cent rate by July 8. Varsity’s past experience The university had earlier in January lost some prominent scholars to the pandemic. A former vice-chancellor at the university, Oye Ibidapo-Obe, died on January 3, and another, a former dean of students’ affairs on the campus, Duro Ajeyalemi, was also claimed by the pandemic on January 6. The university’s former dean of law faculty and currently the attorney-general and commissioner for justice in Oyo State, South-west Nigeria, Oyelowo Oyewo, was also infected by the virus. Mr Oyewo, however, recovered after spending some weeks in isolation in Lagos. https://i1.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2017/08/UNILAG-Students.jpg STUDENTS [photo credit: Pulse.ng] https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/473414-breaking-panic-in-unilag-as-students-contract-covid-19.html |

The Chief of Army Staff, Farouq Yahaya, has promoted a soldier from private to lance corporal for excellent performance while executing a task far above his rank. The soldier, Jamilu Mohammed, was acting as the Quarter Guard Sergeant at Command Engineering Depot in Kaduna at the time Mr Yahaya visited on Monday. By the military order of ranks, a Quarter Guard Sergeant is a field rank or office manned by a sergeant. But due to the shortage of sergeants in many of the military posts, any soldier of any lower rank can act as Quarter Guard Sergeant. But it is rare to have an unranked private soldier accomplishing such a task without flops. Mr Mohammed, who was under three years old in the Nigerian Army, had to step in to perform the task that requires a soldier with 16 years of experience to accomplish. After leading the Quarter Guard parade to welcome the COAS, Mr Mohammed had to, perfunctorily, introduce his rank as “19NA/782148, Private Jamilu Mohammed”. And that introduction generated the curiosity and interest of the army chief. After the quarter inspection, the army chief recommended Mr Mohammed for a promotion to the next rank – which is lance corporal. In the Nigerian army, it takes a private soldier five years to be promoted lance corporal. Mr Mohammed still has about three years more to be due for the promotion. Sources familiar with the military ranking system said it takes courage and rare confidence for even senior non-commissioned officers to stand and lead a parade before the COAS. But Mr Mohammed did his assigned task without any flops. Army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, said the action of the chief of army staff was “in line with one of the pillars of his command philosophy of professionalism. “The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) , Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya has granted automatic promotion to 19NA/782148, Jamilu Mohammed. “This promotion came as a result of the professional military skills displayed by the soldier at a regimental Quarter Guard during COAS’ operational visit to Command Engineering Depot in Kaduna,” Mr Nwachukwu, a Brigadier General, said. While decorating the soldier with his new badge of rank, the COAS said he performed his duty far above expectation. “The promotion/is a reward for outstanding performance as an Acting Quarter Guard Sergeant to spur others to always display a high sense of professionalism in whatever task they are assigned to perform,” the COAS said. “This will not only improve the system, but also guarantee success in all military operations.” The COAS, who, according to Mr Nwachukwu, “was at the CED to inspect the facilities to enhance the productive capacity of the centre, said he was impressed with the research and developmental efforts of the engineers.” The army spokesperson said one of the COAS’ cardinal focuses is to “prioritise training, capacity building and professionalism amongst personnel of the NA.” https://i2.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2021/07/Screenshot_20210713_070005-e1626177109201.jpg https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/473314-nigerian-army-chief-promotes-private-soldier-for-accomplishing-tasks-above-his-rank.html |

Four family members have died of suspected food poisoning in the central Uganda district of Luweero, police said on Monday. Issa Semwogerere, Savannah Region police spokesperson, told Xinhua by telephone that the dead included a couple aged 63 and 60 and their two grandchildren aged five and six. “They were found dead in the house on Monday morning. We highly suspect it is poisoning but we shall wait for the final postmortem,’’ he added. Semwogerere said they had to break the door of the family house where they found the bodies in beds. “We have also taken the food samples found in the house for examination,’’ he added. Egyptian parliament on Monday approved legal amendments expanding the government’s ability to sack civil servants with suspected links to terrorist groups without prior disciplinary action. A parliamentary source said the move was described by state media as a major step in a campaign to purify government bodies of members of the Muslim Brotherhood which Egypt classifies as a terrorist group. The legal amendments are to allow the government to immediately fire any employee whose name appears on its terrorism list. This includes suspects who are still under investigation or on trial as well as those convicted in terrorism cases. The list includes some liberal and leftist activists, and also individuals who are on to the terrorism list by court orders. They are generally subjected to an asset freeze and a travel ban but have 60 days to appeal the Egyptian parliament on Monday approved legal amendments expanding the government’s ability to sack civil servants with suspected links to terrorist groups without prior disciplinary action. They are generally subjected to an asset freeze and a travel ban but have 60 days to appeal the decision. Public prosecutors submit requests in court to put people or groups on the list and the court decides on the matter. Since 1972, the dismissal without disciplinary action act has allowed the government to dismiss any public employee considered a threat to state security. The amendments classify presence on the terrorist list as serious evidence of such a threat, while also allowing dismissed employees to appeal before administrative courts. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has overseen a broad crackdown on Islamist and liberal political opponents since leading the overthrow of Muslim Brotherhood President Mohamed Mursi as army chief in 2013. A parliamentary committee said in a report on the legal amendments that they aim to preserve Egypt’s national security and combat corruption. According to the committee, the amendment is in line with a constitutional committee for the state to fight terrorism. Many Egyptians welcomed the amendments on social media while others expressed concerns that the state could target any employee who is not pro-government regardless of any affiliation to Islamist groups. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/egypt-passes-law-on-right-to-sack-civil-servants-linked-to-terrorism/ |
UN Secretary-General António Guterres says erosion of women’s reproductive rights has been one of the fallouts from the Coronavirus ( COVID-19 ) pandemic. He has, therefore, called for access to sexual and reproductive health services for women. Guterres, in his message to commemorate the World Population Day on Sunday, underscored the need to close the gaps impeding women’s access to sexual and reproductive health services which the crisis has created. World Population Day is an annual event, observed on July 11 every year to raise awareness on global population issues. According to the secretary- general, the pandemic “continues to upend our world, reaching one grim milestone after another. “Last week, the global death toll due to COVID-19 officially surpassed four million. “In addition to the millions of lives tragically lost, there has been a less visible toll: a shocking rise in domestic violence. “There is a rise in domestic violence as women were forced into isolation with their abusers; empty maternity wards as women postponed motherhood; and unintended pregnancies due to curtailed access to contraceptive services,” he said. The UN estimates that the pandemic will push some 47 million women and girls into extreme poverty. Additionally, many girls now out of school may never return to the classroom. “In every corner of the world, we are seeing a reversal of hard-won gains and an erosion of women’s reproductive rights and choices, among other things. “With the onset of the pandemic, resources for sexual and reproductive health services were diverted,” the secretary-general said. “These gaps in access to health rights are unacceptable. Women cannot be alone in this fight. “As we mark World Population Day, let us pledge to ensure the reproductive health rights of everyone, everywhere,” he added.
