Some residents in Enugu have shifted patronage to sweet potatoes as alternative staple food as price of yam continues to soar, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. A correspondent of NAN, who visited major markets in Enugu metropolis on Saturday, observed that sweet potatoes had flooded yam shops. Some yam sellers are currently stocking only sweet potatoes in their shops due its high demand. A bag of potatoes sells for between N7,000 and N8,500 as against the price of a heap of 12 sizable yam tubers which is sold between N6,400 and N7,000. One medium-size of yam now goes for between N700 and N800 as against six sizable potatoes sold for N200. Some residents said that potato produce had solved hunger in many families. A resident, Miss Uju Ufondu, said that potato had made it possible for many families to still eat tuber staple food. “At least with N500 you can get enough potatoes for your family and whichever way you prepare it, your family will be satisfied. Another resident, Mrs Vivian Oba, said that the price increase of yam has forced to turn to potatoes for her family and also for its nutritional value. “It has been proved that sweet potato is more nutritious, filling, and tasty than yam,” Oba said. Some potatoes sellers told NAN that the price of the produce crashed due to its season as yam tubers are off season. A potatoes seller in Garki Market, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she had switched trade to sweet potatoes pending when new yams are harvested. “I now sell sweet potatoes because of the increase in the price of yam, which has made most of my customers to stop patronizing me. “So I quickly bought some bags of potatoes to sell as many now go for it and for me not to lose my customers,” she said. Mr Kelvin Egwu, another seller, added that potatoes are now affordable than yam due to the continuous increase in the price of yam. “Because of the high patronage in potatoes, I decided to switch over to it from my yam business pending when new yams start coming into the markets,” Egwu added. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/enugu-residents-turn-to-potatoes-as-yam-prices-skyrocket/ |

Two days after the confirmation of the ‘most transmissible’ delta variant of the coronavirus disease in Nigeria, cases are now consistently on therise again in the country. According to the statistics released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the country reported 110 cases on Wednesday, 145 on Thursday, and on Friday, 186 cases were reported. Public health experts are afraid that the delta variant, which was first identified in India in March, could trigger dramatic rises in cases and deaths in Nigeria. The NCDC described the new development as worrisome. In an update on its Facebook page Friday night, the centre said Friday’s infection figure raised the total number of cases in the country to 168,442. Meanwhile, the death toll remains 2,122 as no new fatality was recorded on Friday. Specifics The new cases on Friday were recorded in three states with Lagos State topping the chart by reporting 175 out of the new 186 cases. Rivers and Gombe States also reported eight and three cases respectively. Meanwhile, the NCDC data shows that a total of 164,323 recoveries have been made across the country so far while 1,897 cases are said to be active. Nigeria has tested 2,331,734 samples for COVID-19 out of the country’s roughly 200 million population. Delta Variant The delta variant has been described by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the ‘most transmissible variant.’ According to the global body, the variant is responsible for the spike in about 98 countries across the world. Also known as B.1.617.2, the Delta variant has been linked to 90 per cent of the rise in cases in the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA). It is believed that the variant is somewhat more resistant to COVID-19 vaccines , and may also be associated with a greater risk of hospitalisation . https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/472744-covid-19-infections-rise-in-nigeria-after-delta-variant-emerges.html |

A plane carrying 28 people has gone missing in Russia. The Russian AN-26 aeroplane was flying from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Palana in the Kamchatka Peninsula, in Russia’s far east, when it did not make a scheduled call-in, local media reported. Among those on board are six crew members and 22 passengers, including a child under 12. The plane missed a scheduled communication and disappeared from the radars, local emergency officials said. The plane was coming in for a landing when contact was six miles away from Palana’s airport, Al Jazeera cited a source as saying. A spokeswoman for the local transport prosecutor’s office in Russia said “search and rescue efforts are underway”. “All that is known at this time, what has been possible to establish, is that communication with the plane was interrupted and it did not land,” she told AFP. It is not yet clear how the plane crashed, as visibility was good at the time with only “low clouds” and “light winds”. There were conflicting reports of what may have happened, with RIA reporting the plane crashed into the sea off the Kamchatka peninsula as it was preparing to land while Interfax reported the plane may have gone down near a coal mine close to the town of Palana. The plane also had a certificate of airworthiness and had passed pre-flight checks, officials said. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin ordered a special commission to find out what had happened to the plane. “A criminal case was also launched into its fate, a normal measure when a plane goes missing or crashes in Russia,” the Sun newspaper reported. The plane belonged to a company called Kamchatka Aviation Enterprise and has been in operation since 1982. The company’s director, Alexei Khabarov, told the Interfax news agency that the plane was “technically sound.” https://i1.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2021/07/tk4tpt5g_plane-generic_625x300_29_May_19.jpg https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/471896-passenger-plane-goes-missing-in-russia.html |

Akwa Ibom State High Court1, sitting in Ikot Ekpene has fixed July 12, 2021 to deliver its ruling on the bail application filed by Professor Peter Ogban, of the University of Calabar, UNICAL, Cross River State who was jailed three years for electoral fraud, pending the determination of his case by Court of Appeal. Justice Pius Idiong fixed the date after taking arguments from Ogban’s team of Lawyer’s led by Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN) and INEC team of lawyers led by Clement Onwuenwunor at the hearing of the bail application on Thursday. Professor Ogban, who is in custody at the Federal Correctional centre, Ikot Ekpene, had on June 17, 2021, through his Lawyers applied for bail pending Appeal against his conviction, which was supported by 16-paragraphs affidavit. At the hearing of the bail request, the applicant’s Lawyer, Chief Agabi, told the court that his client’s request for bail was filed based on Health grounds as stated in paragraphs 9, 10 and 11 of the affidavit. Agabi who told the Court that the medical report tendered as Exhibit A3, issued by a General Hospital of Akwa Ibom State Government and made by an expert indicates that his Client had been hypertensive for 10years and therefore deserves proper treatment outside the walls of the correctional service. He appealed to the court to show mercy and exercise its discretion in favour of the applicant stressing, “This application is about the exercise of discretion” But INEC through its Lawyer, Onwuenwunor urged the court to ‘disallow’ the bail request, insisting that the applicant must first prove exceptional circumstance or unusual reason why the Court should exercise discretion in his favour. Onwuenwunor who explained that in opposition to the bail request they had filed a 21 paragraph counter- affidavit, argued that the fact that the applicant request for bail lacks merit since his medical record shows that notwithstanding that he is in custody, the authorities arrange his treatment where he had been treated for the past 10years i Recall that the UNICAL Professor of Soil Science, served as Collation/ Returning officer during the 2019 National Assembly elections and was found guilty of manipulating and falsifying the scores of election results in Oruk Anam and Etim Ekpo local government areas in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party. Professor Ogban was arraigned before the State High Court, Ikot Ekpene on December 15, 2020 and Sentenced for three years imprisonment in Charge no: HT/29C/ 2020 with no option of fine in Count 2 and a fine of one Hundred thousand naira (100,000.00) in count 1. PAN-Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, weekend, knocked the National Assembly over the newly passed Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, saying it did not meet the yearnings of the Niger-Delta people. The regional group also warned that conflicts may continue in the oil-rich region if host communities were denied their legitimate rights. PANDEF, at an extraordinary meeting in Abuja, restated its stand on restructuring and cautioned the Federal Government over the abandonment of its 16-point agenda presented to President Muhammadu Buhari, November 1, 2016, in view of recent threats by militants to resume fresh hostilities in the region over unfulfilled promises by government. It frowned at the continuous use of interim management to run the Niger-Delta Development Commission, NDDC. The group asked the Federal Government to call security agents to order concerning the midnight invasion of the residence of Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, and tell Nigerians the home truth on the repatriation of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, Nnamdi Kanu. National Leader of PANDEF, Senator Edwin Kiagbodo Clark; National Chairman, Senator Emmanuel Ibok- Essien; Deputy National Chairman, Chief Hon. T. K. Okorotie; former Minister of Housing, Lands and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Nduese Essien; former Chairman, NDDC, Senator Bassey Ewa Henshaw; and former Secretary to the Government of Rivers State, Senator Inatimi Rufus-Spiff, attended the meeting. Others in attendance were PANDEF National Woman Leader, Chief (Mrs.) Betty Igbeyi; former Resident Electoral Commissioner, Edo State, Dr. Mrs. Rose Obuoforibo; former member, House of Representatives, Chief Mrs. Olivia Agbajoh; former Commissioner, DESOPADEC, Chief Ominimini Obiuwevwi and former National Secretary, Traditional Rulers of Oil Producing Communities of Nigeria, TROMPCON, Prince Maikpbo Okareme. The group’s resolutions, contained in a communique by Clark and Ibok-Essien, read in part: “That the PIB falls short of the expectations of the Niger Delta people, who bear the brunt of the consequences of the oil and gas industry operations in their lands. “PANDEF recalls and reiterates that host communities of the Niger Delta region had demanded 10 per cent equity participation, as against the percentages just passed by the National Assembly. “And maintains its long-held logical demand that, unless stakeholders of the oil and gas host communities are given sufficient rights in the management and operation of the industry, conflicts in the oil- rich region may persist. “Cautions the Federal Government of Nigeria over the now likely deleterious consequences of ignoring, or treating with contempt, the 16- Point Agenda presented to President Muhammadu Buhari, on 1st November 2016. “Currently, the Youth in the Niger Delta have declared a ‘vote of no confidence’ on PANDEF because it was the leaders of the region that stayed their hand when, in frustration, they had decided to cripple the national economy in 2016. “Condemns the brutal and bloody midnight raid on the residence of a Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, in the Soka area of Ibadan, Oyo State, by agents of the Department of State Services, DSS, in a Gestapo manner, during which innocent citizens were killed and properties destroyed. “Stands in solidarity with Afenifere, and the South-West people, on this matter and calls on Mr. President to immediately call to order the security agencies and cease all forms of flagrant abuse of power. “Requests the Federal Government to tell Nigerians the truth of the process which led to the abduction of the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and his clandestine, forceful repatriation to Nigeria, and hopes that he will be given a fair and open trial. “Cautions that the reported identification of sponsors of Nnamdi Kanu should not be an alibi to witch-hunt and persecute phantom enemies imagined by the government. “Stands, firmly, in solidarity with the people of the Middle Belt, in the face of brutal physical attacks and seeming plans to destroy their every means of livelihood, by suspected Fulani gunmen.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/pandef-rejects-passed-pib-says-it-doesnt-meet-expectations-insists-on-restructuring/ |

A total of 82 students made first class out of 2,079, comprising 1,660 undergraduates and 417 postgraduate at the 19th convocation ceremony of Babcock University, Ilisan Remo, Ogun State. Okunola Temitayo of the Department of Mass Communication emerged overall best graduating student with 4.91 CGPA on a scale of 5. The overall best postgraduate in the PhD programme was Olomojobi Femi with a CGPA of 4.81 on a scale of 5. Amarachukwu Peace of Public Health Department was overall best Master’s degree graduate with a CGPA of 4.77 on a scale of 5. Okunola Teslimat Temitayo also won the President’s award for the best performance in leadership, academic, community and spiritual services. Speaking at the 10th postgraduate second virtual convocation event, the President/Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ademola Tayo, congratulated the students and the university community for their contributions to the achievements the school recorded. He noted that the university’s academic programmes were fully accredited by the National Universities Commission, NUC; International Board of Education, IBE, and the Adventist Accrediting Association, AAA. He added that the fully equipped Babcock University Centre for Open and Distance, eLearning Centre, was ready to provide opportunities for many desiring to advance their academic career outside the walls of the university as soon as NUC gives the nod for the Centre to commence academic activities. Prof. Tayo said: “Again, the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Classroom, offices and workshops are being prepared for NUC’s Resource visit to enable the commencement of the programme in environmental sciences.” Tayo said the University would continue to pursue the path of excellence with passion and spirituality, urging the graduates not to keep their eyes on the things that were transient but on those wholesome values and virtues that they derived from the institution. He stated that Nigeria’s developmental challenges awaited their contributions in the form of solutions. “You are the solutions. Unleash your ingenuity and the knowledge you have acquired here on the world and make it a better place,” he said. The vice chancellor charged the graduates not to stop learning as their learning which has just started would continue throughout their life time. “You have a responsibility to use the knowledge acquired here in Babcock for creativity for yourself, your community, your country and Babcock University,” he added. As no university would exist without research, Professor Tayo said the Office of Research, Innovation and International Cooperation which had been directly involved in the University’s research activities this year produced a team of researchers from Babcock and Loma Linda University, USA which received the Loma Linda GRASP International research grant award to conduct a randomized clinical trial on an indigenous nut. The team comprised Dr. Nwachukwu Ifeanyi of the Biochemistry Centre for Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles, Loma Linda University, USA; Dr Godswill Anyasor of the Department of Biochemistry, Babcock University, Nigeria; and Dr. Olutayo, S. Shokunbi of the Department of Biochemistry, Babcock University. In his commencement speech, the Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), Mr. Laoye Jaiyeola, urged the graduates to go into the next phase of life with the mind to be independent, creative, thinking outside the box, learning to be resourceful and spending wisely. Jaiyeola reminded the graduates that they were entering into a labour market where it was no longer business as usual, and that with the pandemic, many companies have embraced digital technologies hence those with acquisition of digital skills were the ones that would be in high demand across all sectors of the economy. “What all these mean for you is that wherever you find yourself, you must constantly acquire digital skills to stay ahead of the game and make yourself productive. “The future of the world is the digital economy and individuals that will make discoveries and contribute positively to the world are those that will embrace digital skills in whatever field they find themselves,” he said. https://cdn.vanguardngr.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/BAB.jpg From left— Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Philemon Amanze; President/Vice Chancellor, Professor Ademola Tayo, and the Overall Best Graduating Student, Miss Teslimat Temitayo Okunlola, all of Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, during prize giving at the school’s convocation. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/85-bag-first-class-as-babcock-graduates-2079/ |
The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has threatened to cripple Nigeria should anything happen to its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS) following his re-arrest on Sunday, June 27. The separatist group also said that Nnamdi Kanu should be allowed access to his lawyers, doctors, and family as part of his fundamental human rights. The IPOB disclosed this in a communique forwarded to Vanguard by its media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful on Friday. “Following the refusal of the Nigeria Government and her security agency, the Department of State Services, DSS, to allow our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers and family access to him in the dungeon of DSS secret cell, it is now confirmed that their real intention in arresting him and bundling him back to Nigeria is suspecious. The mission they could not actualise in September 14, 2017 when soldiers invaded his Afaraukwu home during Operation Python Dance is what they want to actualise now. “His health has been deteriorating in the DSS cell as he has refused to eat their food since almost one week they kidnapped him. We demand that DSS should allow him access to his lawyers and family members for this is his lawful right. And his lawyers are being harassed and we pity them and Nigeria if anything happen to our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu the Nigeria Government and security agencies must understand the product we are made of and how prepared we are. “Southeast Governors and Ohaneze including politicians in the region must ensure that nothing bad happen to Nnamdi Kanu because Miyetti Allah and sympathisers of terrorists are going free in the country but ordinary person and innocent citizens are being molested everyday because they are Biafrans. We won’t accept that. “We also want to tell the DSS to jettison any plan to inject our leader with poisonous vaccine that will make him die slowly. Any such attempt will come with unimaginable consequences! Nnamdi Kanu must not die in custody!” The statement partly read. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/nigeria-ll-cripple-should-anything-happen-to-nnamdi-kanu-ipob-warns-fg/ |
