Politics › NA Assassinated Col. Ibrahim Sakaba For Opposing Looting Funds For BH War: Widow by milann(op): 8:13am On Aug 12, 2021 |
Oluwaseun, the widow of Ibrahim Sakaba, a lieutenant-colonel, has accused the Nigerian Army of killing her husband because he “refused to be part of their plots” to loot funds meant to prosecute the Boko Haram war. Her disclosure followed the army’s statement that 1,081 Boko Haram terrorists purportedly surrendered in Bama on Monday. Photos shared on the army’s social media page saw the surrendered terrorists display several placards with inscriptions such as “Nigerians, please forgive us,” “surrender and live,” “surrender and be free,” among others. While sharing the photos of the surrendered insurgents on her Instagram page, Ms Sakaba alleged that the army was responsible for the death of her husband, said to have died during a Boko Haram attack on a battalion in Borno. “I should forgive them for making many women widows and kids fatherless. I should forgive them for (your failure to pay) my late husband dues! I should forgive them for all their atrocities done to my family,” she wrote. “You shot my husband dead in his office that you pretended to be a friendly force just because he refused (sic) to be part of your plots. Time for dragging now.” Lambasting the army’s statement, Ms Sakaba said, “You are complete assh*les to even have the intermediary to post this on your page! Like you kidding me … all the pains families and loved ones have suffered we (sic) be on your head… you nitwits… all the blood of soldiers we ask you all.” When reached for further clarifications on her claims, Mr Sakaba’s widow told Peoples Gazette that she would not be “spilling” morebdetails at the moment. Also, the spokesperson for the army, Onyema Nwachukwu, did not immediately return The Gazette’s request seeking comments on the allegation. Mr Sakaba died alongside 117 other soldiers in November 2018, after Boko Haram insurgents attacked a Nigerian Army battalion in Borno State. After the demise of the colonel and other soldiers, the army did not immediately make a formal announcement of their death. On November 24, 2018, his wife took to her Instagram page to write, “been Sunday I have not heard anything about my husband if he’s dead or alive. I am giving u people Monday to get back to me or face me.” A top military officer who was familiar with the late colonel had at that time told Premium Times that Mr Sakaba “had sometimes ago refused to advance for an operation due to unserviceable and lack of equipment but was threatened with court martial.” https://gazettengr.com/nigerian-army-assassinated-col-ibrahim-sakaba-for-opposing-looting-funds-for-boko-haram-war-widow/ |
Crime › Customs Officers On Their Way To Eat Kill Five People by milann(op): 8:55am On Aug 10, 2021 |
Customs officers on their way to have a meal have killed five persons in Katsina. On Monday, the Nigerian Customs Service confirmed that its officers killed five bystanders, stating that the fatal incident happened when one of the officers driving a patrol vehicle lost control. The killing occurred in Jibia local government area. Dalha Wada-Chedi, the acting Comptroller of NCS in Katsina, further explained that the bystanders were killed when the officers (operatives of the Border Drill) went to Jibia to get food. “But unfortunately lost control and crushed some people to death,” said Mr Wada-Chedi. “It is really unfortunate. We had to use our cordial relationship with the communities, the police, military, and other sister security organisations to bring the situation under control.” He also disclosed that those involved in the crash were more than the five bystanders crushed to death. “From the report we received so far, five people died, and others are receiving treatment in the hospital,” he added. “Those of our men involved are currently with the police, and investigation is already ongoing to unravel the circumstances behind the incident.” (NAN) https://gazettengr.com/customs-officers-on-their-way-to-eat-kill-five-people/ |
Politics › Fleeing Gloria Osei, Husband Procure Dominican Passports Amid Interpol Manhunt by milann(op): 7:13pm On Aug 09, 2021 |
Nigerian couple entrepreneurs Gloria Igberaese and Muyiwa Folorunsho declared wanted by Interpol and on the run for their involvement in multimillion-dollar investment fraud have obtained Dominican passports. Last week, Peoples Gazette reported that the entrepreneurs, CEOs of Divergent Enterprise operating businesses such as Landlagos, PorkMoney, Hyberfactory, and Porkoyum, among other companies, were issued warrants of arrest by the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court . “He is wanted by the police for the offence of obtaining money under false pretence, stealing and diversion of funds,” a notice issued by the Interpol section of the Nigeria Police Force in Lagos said. They were declared wanted after an individual, Chijioke Ukaegbu and other victims filed a petition against them. In one case, the suspects, whose social media prominence earned them the pseudonym ‘Bonnie and Clyde’, allegedly defrauded investors N1 billion. “These funds were, however, diverted to personal use, including the purchase of luxury properties and foreign citizenship,” victims said in a January 21 petition to federal authorities. However, claims that they purchased foreign citizenship appear to be true as The Gazette sighted the data of their Dominican passports. Dominica, a small island in the eastern Caribbean Sea, has become a haven for fraudsters attempting to escape the arm of the law, offering for sale to the highest bidder diplomatic immunity, one of which Nigeria’s former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, was reported to have bought. A 2019 documentary by exposed how wealthy politicians, criminals, and corrupt businesspersons Aljazeera diplomatic passports from Caribbean countries. According to the purchase documentary ‘Diplomats for sale,’ the fees range between $250,000 and $2 million depending on the personality involved. In 2020, evidence emerged that Mrs Alison-Madueke, who was on trial for looting billions of dollars from oil revenues, obtained the foreign country’s citizenship to secure immunity from prosecution by any law enforcement agency. It exposed that she bought the diplomatic passport with $2.2 million to evade prosecution. She was also appointed as a Trade and Investment Commissioner of Dominica by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit a few days before former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration ended. The report stated, “In London, she (Diezani) is personally handed a Dominican diplomatic passport by Prime Minister Skerrit; a passport which could shield her from criminal charges. We found documents showing a few days later that a shell company was formed in Delaware, an American state where laws mean the true owners of a company are kept secret.” It noted that “four months later, that shell company buys a New York apartment” for $2.2 million with no mortgage. The report added, “Property records confirm that the prime minister’s wife, Melissa, was a resident. Photos placed the Skerrit family there. Both Diezani and Skerrit deny any links to the company that bought the apartment.” https://gazettengr.com/investment-fraud-fleeing-gloria-osei-husband-procure-dominican-passports-amid-interpol-manhunt/ |
Travel › Lagos-kano Train Service To Begin Full Operation August 13 by milann(op): 8:39am On Aug 09, 2021 |
The Lagos-Kano train service is to resume operation from Friday, August 13, the regional district manager of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Ismail Adebiyi, said on Sunday. The train would leave Lagos on Friday evening and arrive in Kano on Sunday morning, he said. Mr Adebiyi also said that plans have been concluded to restart the Kaduna to Kafanchan and Kaduna to Kano train service before the end of August. He added that it would rehabilitate 100 wagons to further strengthen the rail sector within the next two months. He explained that 21 of the rehabilitated wagons would be used in the northern district of the rail service comprising Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina and Zamfara States. He said the Kano to Nguru, Yobe train service was still active and that plans were at an advanced stage to enhance the traffic on the route by returning coaches that were dropped because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The regional district manager said the Minna-Kaduna rail mass transit had also been active for the past one month and that patronage was increasing on every trip. The service runs on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays. The train leaves Minna at 7:00 a.m. and leaves Kaduna at about 2:30 p.m. He added that since most of the routes were on a narrow gauge, the corporation would strengthen its maintenance work to ensure hitch-free operations. Mr Adebiyi stressed that the corporation had strengthened its collaboration with key security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to address vandalism on railway properties. https://gazettengr.com/lagos-kano-train-service-to-begin-full-operation-august-13/ |

Politics › While Nigerian Soldiers Battle Insurgents, Bandits; Families Live In Darkness by milann(op): 1:26pm On Aug 08, 2021 |
While officers of the Nigerian Army battle insecurity in different parts of the country, the families they left behind in the barracks suffer poor power supply, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt. At the Ikeja cantonment in Lagos, a soldier described the situation as “suffering in surplus.” The cantonment gets three hours of power supply every day, even though the neighbourhood, Onigbongbo, and environs enjoy relative steady power supply, PREMIUM TIMES gathered. “The problem started since 2016. In fact, it was two hours supply we used to get before a new commander came and they changed it to three hours,” Ngozi Udom, a soldier’s wife told PREMIUM TIMES. The cantonment is supplied electricity by the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) and gets power supply between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. every day, except for days when the feeder is faulty. “Even when a bomb blast occurred at the barrack, we all thought we would not have light for three years but they brought back light after three days. Now, no bomb blast, nothing is wrong with the light, yet they deny us of good light,” Mrs Udom added. The Ikeja cantonment bomb blast occurred on January 27, 2002, with over 1000 lives lost in the incident. Soldiers, families lamentSeveral soldiers and their families resident in the Ikeja cantonment lamented how they have been “suffering is silence” for over six years with no recourse in sight. Not only do the residents not have access to a good power supply, they are also exposed to noise from generators which cause disturbance for many of them, PREMIUM TIMES gathered. A soldier, who identified himself as Moses John, said there have been several efforts to improve the electricity situation in the cantonment but to no avail. “I moved to the cantonment about three years ago and the light issue has been on ground,” he said. “I spend thousands of naira fueling my generator monthly just to cushion the effect of the bad power supply on my family. It is bad enough that we cannot use certain home appliances due to bad power supply.” Mr John said parts of the efforts made by the soldiers themselves included a suggested monthly contribution for electricity, which was dead on arrival because contributions by soldiers are not allowed by the army authority. “We cannot sleep at night due to excess heat and noise from generators of neighbours from left and right,” another resident, who prefers not to be named, said. “Imagine saying you are living at the cantonment and cannot make meaning out of life. This electricity issue is really disturbing. Many of us (solders’ wives) cannot do business or sell goods that require electricity because we don’t have one. “Even the children are affected. Imagine that your children cannot watch creative programmes on the television because there is no light. They bring it when it’s bedtime, so the children cannot make any use of it,” the woman said. For Muinat Ahmed, another soldier’s wife who has been living at the Ikeja cantonment since 1995, the plight is quite different. “Usually, our husbands give us money at month-end, and we (wives) make contributions, buy foodstuffs and soup ingredients in bulk and share. This is because we had good electricity and can stock them in the refrigerator. “This cannot happen anymore. We cannot cook soup and put it in the fridge. It will get spoilt. Buying things in bulk is cheaper but we cannot do that now. Prices of things have gone up. It is really affecting us,” she said. Mrs Ahmed said the electricity crisis started in the cantonment in 2006 and things are “getting harder” for residents, especially the women. “We cannot do little businesses we used to do. We cannot sell cold drinks and other things. Things are really bad,” she added. ‘Crippled’ businessesBusinesses with the Ikeja cantonment also bear the brunt of poor power supply, as many business owners lament how it is crippling their operations. Uche Achude, who runs a computer printing business at the Mammy market, the business region of the cantonment, said he is on the verge of quitting because the business is no longer profitable. “The cost of fueling generators and repairing them when they get faulty is way higher than the gains made in the business. We do not get to use the light because, by the time they bring it, we have already closed. “What will I be doing in the shop between 8’o clock and 11? They never bring it during the day, so 100 percent of our jobs are done using the generator,” he said. Another business owner, who declined to give her name, said she could not sell cold drinks unless she buys ice block from shops outside the cantonment. “The light is a big problem, but it is like the army is not doing anything about it. How much gain do I make on drinks that I will be using generator every time? Even when I buy ice blocks, they cannot ice too much goods.” Ikeja Electric ReactsWhen PREMIUM TIMES contacted a representative of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, Akinola Ayeni, on the electricity issue at the cantonment, he said it is due to the outstanding debt owed by the cantonment. “The issue of Ikeja Army is a lingering issue that we have been trying to manage. This energy they are giving us from the national grid, we are paying for it. “The issue of they are not getting light, you should ask why they are not getting regular light. Are they paying? Are they accumulating debt? We cannot continue to accumulate debt at the cantonment. There is nothing that we do that we hide. “We don’t ask individuals to contribute money for Ikeja electric. All we ask everybody to do is to pay their electricity bills and in a situation where they cannot pay, we cannot continue to will our energy to where they are not ready to pay electricity bill at all,” Mr Ayeni said. ‘Electricity Bills paid from Army Headquarters’A source at the Ikeja cantonment, who prefers not to be named because he is not authorised to speak, said the cantonment has an outstanding electricity bill that run into billions of naira. The source said the debt has been accumulated over time and the army authority refused to pay, which is why the electricity company is supplying three hours of electricity per day. When PREMIUM TIMES contacted Kolawole Bello, the spokesperson of the 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, he said the army headquarters pays electricity bills of all Army barracks and cantonments across the country. “I believe epileptic electricity supply is not exclusive to Ikeja cantonment alone,” said Mr Bello, a major. “Electricity bills in all Nigerian Army barracks and cantonments are always paid directly from the Army Headquarters to the relevant electricity distribution company.” ‘No money to pay bills’Reacting to the complaints by the Ikeja cantonment residents, Mohammed Yerima, the Nigerian Army spokesperson, said the entire nation and army barracks are affected by the epileptic power supply and not only the cantonment. He said the Nigerian Army has no money to pay electricity bills of all the barracks and cantonments in the country. The Nigerian Army has 75 barracks and cantonments. “You think we can pay the bills, not only Ikeja cantonment but the whole Nigerian Army? We have been begging the National Assembly to look into that, how are we going to get the money to pay? We have the whole Nigerian Army and Armed Forces to pay for, is it only Ikeja that wants good light?” he said. PREMIUM TIMES’ checks showed that although epileptic power supply is a common feature across other military settlements as well as most parts of Lagos, the residents in the Ikeja Cantonment seem to be the worst hit. At Bonny Cantonment, Victoria Island, and Dodan Barracks, Ikoyi, the residents described the power situation as “relatively stable.” In the former, for instance, some soldiers interviewed said they have about eight hours or more electricity supply daily, while in the latter, it is between six and eight hours every day. Mr Yerima said many states in Nigeria do not get more than four hours of power supply daily, and barracks are not an exception. “It affects the whole nation,” he said. “Even Abuja, Niger Barracks, where everybody is, we don’t get (a) steady power supply. The Army does not have money, but we have made a case and the government is looking into that.” https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-west/478081-while-nigerian-soldiers-battle-insurgents-bandits-families-live-in-darkness.html |

Politics › Arochukwu Erosion: LGA Asks For Help As Only The Access Road Is At Risk by milann(op): 10:04am On Aug 06, 2021 |
Residents of Arochukwu community in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, have called for urgent intervention by both the federal and the state government as erosion threatens their only link road.
They called on Governments to support their efforts towards fixing the road abandoned for over 20 years.
The one-kilometer road in Agbagwu village links the Arochukwu/Ohafia federal road with the Old Ministry of Works and Housing garage, the Abia Hotel complex, churches, schools and residential buildings in the area.
Some indigenes of the community who narrated their ordeal following the collapse of the road described their experience as hellish.
One of the residents, Mr. Emmanuel Ikechukwu, told our correspondent that apart from the deplorable nature of the road, gully erosion had also eaten up a great portion of the road.
He said it posed a great danger to the community, especially during rainy seasons.
According to him, but for the intervention of a concerned indigene of the area, Pastor Eberechukwu Orji, the entire communities would have been cut off from the rest of the state. “For many years we have forgotten about driving our cars into our houses, until recently when one of our brother’s Pastor and Mrs Eberechkwu Oji, decided to intervene in fixing the road.
“They were the people that started the drainage work that is ongoing on this road, that is why we are calling on the government and other good-spirited individuals to collaborate with them and complete the job for the benefits of all and sundry.
“This road is very strategic because it connects many villages to our Central market, Hospital, Police station. But most importantly this road leads to the Abia Hotel complex which used to be a big tourist centre in this community starting from the old Imo state but is now abandoned for many years.
When contacted, Oji, confirmed that the quest to contribute his quotas to society made him take up the onerous responsibility of fixing the road through the Nestar Corporate Services Limited. He said that he had spent over N10 million in managing the road while urging Government to come to the rescue of his people.
” My wife and I embarked on the project to give back to our hometown. My house is on the road and I was shocked to see that erosion had completely destroyed the road and it was no longer motorable. People who live on both ends of the road have to suffer a long journey to cross what was ordinarily a short road.
“We need partners, both private individuals of like minds, corporate organizations, government agencies like the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, the Niger Delta Development Commission, and the Ministry of Works to join hands with us to fast track and complete the road construction work.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/08/abia-community-cries-out-for-help-as-erosion-threatens-only-access-road/

Politics › National Defence College's 9-Storey Accomodation Quarters Inaugurated In Abuja by milann(op): 7:24pm On Aug 05, 2021 |
The acute accommodation challenges facing senior military officers, directing staff and participants including foreigners at the apex military institution in the country, the National Defence College was eased on Thursday, August 5th 2021, following the commissioning of a 9-storey building comprising 56 blocks of flats by the federal government.
Minister of Defence, Major Gen Bashir Magashi who inaugurated the building storey which also comprises 56 units of boys’ quarters at the Permanent Site of the National Defence College, Piwoyi, Abuja, noted that the delay in completion of the accommodation was occasioned by the outbreak of the COVID – 19 Pandemic and series of lockdowns.
He expressed the belief that the edifice will substantially reduce accommodation challenges currently facing the College and improve the occupants’ living conditions.
“It is pleasing to also note that the block of 56 flats being commissioned is fully furnished and equipped with modern facilities required in a home for a decent living,” he said adding, “It will also accommodate essential services such as supermarkets, barbing saloon, canteens as well as office accommodation for staff
Emphasizing that for any organization to succeed, it requires the services of a vibrant and well-motivated workforce, the minister said, “This can only be achieved when the expectations of its staff are met through provision of welfare facilities such as this befitting accommodation.
He charged the beneficiaries to make good use of the facilities by observing an effective maintenance culture saying “The timely completion of this building is yet another demonstration of the Federal Government’s resolve to improve the welfare of the Armed Forces and civilian staff of the Ministry of Defence despite several daunting challenges.
“As Minister of Defence, I shall continue to encourage and galvanize efforts towards ensuring that the Armed Forces is sufficiently equipped, well trained and adequately motivated to achieve their statutory mandate.
The Ministry of Defence, under my leadership, will continue to support the National Defence College at all times in sustaining its achievements as a Centre of Excellence and attain further enviable heights among other Defence Colleges globally” he said.
He expressed support for fast-tracking the completion of other ongoing projects in the College to ensure its relocation to the permanent site in Piwoyi within the shortest possible time.
In his remarks, Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Admiral Oladele Daji commended the federal government for completion of the edifice even as he noted that the project which was started in 2017 suffered delay due to budgetary constraints, inflation and the Covid 19 pandemic which necessitated stoppage of work for more than 6 months.
He urged the federal government to ensure the completion of the remaining projects for the movement of the college to the permanent site as the present temporary location had become small for the level of its activities.
Among facilities at the 9 storey building are a central gas cooking system, a 1,000 KVA generating set, Laundry, supermarket, barbing saloon.
Present at the inauguration were the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General SA Adebayo and members of the National Assembly. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/08/accommodation-crisis-fg-inaugurates-9-storey-edifice-with-56-blocks-of-flats-56-boys-quarter-units-for-national-defence-college/

Politics › Abducted Chibok Girl, Terrorist-husband Surrender To Nigerian Troops by milann(op): 5:39pm On Aug 04, 2021 |
A former student of Government Secondary School (GSS) Chibok, in Borno State, and her husband, a Boko Haram-ISWAP terrorist, have surrendered to troops of the Nigerian military in the North East. Sources said the student was among the over 200 abducted by Boko Haram insurgents seven years ago. Recall that on April 14, 2014, Boko Haram terrorists invaded the Borno School and whisked away about than 276 students. The Sources said the Identity of the surrendered female student is being kept secret for now noting that she and her husband have renounced their membership of the extremist sect. They surrendered and presented themselves to troops at an unknown location, within the Lake Chad region. The source said some other Boko Haram-ISWAP insurgents have voluntarily reached out to the military, indicating their interests to surrender and lay down their arms. “The terrorists’ resolve to surrender may not be unconnected with the destruction of their enclaves and camps by the Nigerian military airstrikes and ground bombardment. An outbreak of some unknown killer diseases is also said to be killing the terrorists in their droves coupled with food scarcity, which have badly hit the terrorists. The source said, ”In fact, there are many ISWAP and Boko Haram members that are willing to surrender as soon as possible but the military and other security services will ensure the needful is done for national security”. It would be recalled that during a recent maiden operational tour of Sector 3 Operation Hadin Kai/Multinational Joint Task Force in Monguno, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Faruk Yahaya, charged troops to be decisive and alert in the fight against the Islamic State West Africa Province and Boko Haram terrorists in North-East Nigeria. While lauding their level of discipline and commitment to duty, General Yahaya admonished them to be apolitical, decisive and circumspect in all their operational engagements. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/08/abducted-chibok-girl-terrorist-husband-surrender-to-nigerian-troops-2/ |

GeneralPula: Lies..
Biggy didn’t kill 2pac and 2pac didn’t kill Biggy. BIG said it openly that death is one thing he will never wished on Pac.
CIA didn’t purposely investigate their death. They just concocted lies and sell it to the media..
Suge knight knew something about 2pac’s death... 2pac was shot more than 15 bullets and not a single blood was found inside the car he was sitting down. Not a single bullet touched Suge Knight that was sitting at the driver’s..
As for BIG, till today I still don’t believe Pdiddy is innocent. There’s something fishy... Why?
Piddy was always with BIG. Everywhere he goes, he follows. But on this very night BIG got killed, piddy didn’t follow him to club. He said he had something to figure out. How come it’s at the exact moment that death is goin to happen on BIG you had stuffs to figure out? It was a plan assassination. They knew the club & when he was coming. They knew when he was leaving. BIG stepped into the car, front seat. His driver started driving and just at 5sec drive, gunshot happened..
To me, I feel Pdiddy sold out BIG to gain all the power he’s commanding today in music industry. Trust nobody..
Yankee government killed both rappers. That’s why till today, after more than 20years of death, cia is yet to come out with how it happened.. its the FBI |

Health › Osagie Ehanire: Nigeria Battling With 15 Neglected Tropical Diseases by milann(op): 11:28am On Aug 04, 2021 |
With over 122 million Nigerians at risk of Neglected Tropical Diseases, NTDs, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire on Tuesday lamented that the country was battling with 15 neglected tropical diseases out of the 20 identified by the World Health Organisation, WHO.
Some of the diseases are Trachoma, (Granular Conjunctivitis), Onchocerciasis, (River blindness) Lymphatic Filariasis, (Elephantiasis) helminthiasis, soil-transmitted, schistosomiasis, (parasitic worms) and leprosy, snakebites Yaws Rabies, Buruli ulcer, Leishmaniasis, Human African Trypanosomiasis, HAT, among others.
Addressing journalists at a TWo-Day Media Dialogue on Neglected Tropical Disease Control in Nigeria”, holding in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, organized by the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, in collaboration with the Child Rights Information, Bureau of the Federal Ministry of Information, Ehanire regretted that the diseases are so devastating that they leave their victims miserable.
Represented by the National Coordinator of NTDs, Dr. Nseobong Akpan, he lamented that when household diseases such as malaria, HIV and AIDs are mentioned, NTDs will not be there despite the fact they are common among the downtrodden.
“We have done enough about NTDs but they are still raging across communities in the country. There is a need to create awareness and for communities to be involved in efforts geared towards eliminating the diseases. We will be able to eliminate the diseases if everyone including the media join in crying out loud and support in efforts and commitment of stakeholders to achieve success in the elimination of NTDs.”
In his presentation as the National NTDs Coordinator entitled: “Overview of the Neglected Tropical Diseases”, Dr. Nseobong Akpan further decried the negative impact on the economy as economic development cannot occur without addressing these diseases.
Akpan also noted the significant impact on maternal, newborn, and child health.
“NTDs causes poor nutritional status, especially in children; Poor educational outcomes; Reduced physical and cognitive development -children cannot attend school; absorb lessons. Low productivity -Infected adults cannot work effectively -adults may stay home to care for infected family members.
Speaking on the 122 million Nigerians at risk, he said: “It is estimated that 122 million persons that are 2 out of every 3 Nigerians are at risk of one or more of the NTDs.
“Of the number, 20 per cent are pre-school. Age children, 28 per cent of school-age children between age 5 to 14 years and 52 per cent are adults 15 years and above.
On populations at risk in Nigeria, he explained that; 119.8 million people are at risk of lymphatic filariasis, 51.4 million people for onchocerciasis, 28.8 million school-age children and 20.5 million pre-school-age children for soil-transmitted hermits, 26.8 million people for trachoma and 23.8 million school-age children for schistosomiasis.
He appealed to journalists to create more awareness, sensitisation to attract community participation and ownership of the NTDs campaign.
Also in his presentation on Schistosomiasis, Deputy Director, Programme Manager, National Schistosomiasis Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis Elimination Programme, Dr Obiageli Nebe disclosed that over 200 million people globally are infected.
She said over 700 million people are living at risk of infection and over 90 per cent of people live in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Nebe said it is a disease of low socio-economic status affecting the poorest communities and most neglected vulnerable people.
“Infants, children are especially prone to infection due to their less developed immune system as worm infestation are passed through contaminated food, water or soil.”
Also speaking on UNICEF’s support to elimination of NTDs in Nigeria, UNICEF WASH Specialist, Mr Bioye Ogunjobi said lack of political will and low awareness remained an obstacle to the elimination of NTDs in Nigeria.
Ogunjobi explained that the Nigerian NTDs programmes were mainly sponsored by partners, calling on the government to get more involved in the elimination process of these diseases. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/08/nigeria-battling-with-15-neglected-tropical-diseases-health-minister/ |
Politics › Don’t Mortgage Your Professionalism For Goodwill - IG Admonishes Police Officers by milann(op): 7:27am On Aug 03, 2021 |
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Alkali Baba Usman has advised policemen not to sacrifice professionalism to favour members of the public, urging them to, rather, uphold the professional ethics of the Nigeria Police Force.
He gave this admonition during the commissioning of a fully furnished one-story block comprising the Area Commander’s office, conference room, secretary office and 10 other offices for senior officers, as well as the renovation and furnishing of other existing structures at the Area ‘B’ command, Apapa, Lagos.
The multimillion naira project was conceived by the outgoing Area Commander, Olusoji Akinbayo, who was recently promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Describing Akinbayo”s efforts at mobilizing some friends of the Police to put up such edifice as an act worthy to be emulated by all Area Commanders in Lagos and other commands across the country, IGP Usman who was represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2, AIG Johnson Kokumo, disclosed that the occasion was the second projects as excited by Akinbayo , he was commissioning In six months . He said, “This is indeed an unparalleled achievement.
It is apparent that the Area Commander did not mortgage his PR. If he had , he would never have been able to mobilise people to support him in this manner.
“DCP Olusoji Akinbayo has demonstrated professionalism and has shown an example which other Area Commanders have a lot to learn from. One thing is clear from what we have seen here, if you show that you are for the people, the people too will be there for you.
And so long as you don’t mortgage your PR, you will have no cause to sacrifice your integrity. . And in the course of not mortgaging your PR, you don’t really need to sacrifice professionalism because you want favour from members of the public”.
While appreciating those who supported the Area Commander in the projects, he sought for more of such support , stating that “ We cannot do the job of policing in Lagos without active support of the people.
We need information, we need support. Get close to your DPOs, get close to your Area Commanders and your Commissioner of Police and in the synergy of good cooperation and collaboration, we will be able to secure Lagos state”.
Earlier in his remark, CP Hakeem Odumosu, said the support from members of the public, attested to the outgoing Area Commander’s relationship with members of the public.
He said, “ This shows the good relationship DCP Akinbayo have had with those who supported it , despite the economy of the country. It also shows he is in the good books of the people”.
He therefore advised officers and men of the command to put service first, before money.
He said, “ When you know people, money comes in but if you go out to know money, you will never know people. So, let us improve on our public relations, with members of the public” , he advised.
On his part, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide- Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Mr. Toyin Fayinka, lauded the transparency with which the projects were carried out, stating that it was what motivated those who supported the success.
Describing the support from members of the public as a right action in the right direction, Fayinka said “Police officers are men and women like us, they are not animals. We cannot allow them to sleep where our mates cannot sleep”.
Also in her remark, the Chairperson, Apapa Local Government Area, Mrs. Idowu Senbanjo, said, “What we have seen here is overwhelming. This is the first police station I have been to and seen this sort of grand size project and I believe it is the beginning of a lot of good things for us in Apapa. I appreciate everybody who contributed to this and I hope we can do more in many other projects to improve the life and economy of Apapa”.
Earlier in his welcome address, the outgoing Area Commander attributed his strong moral upbringing and Christian orientation to the primary guides in discharging his duties as a police officer.
Akinbayo explained that to ensure probity and accountability in the projects, he advised everyone that offered to support to pay their donations directly to the designated contractors and never to himself or any of his officers.
According to him, “I remember, when I was posted here and we started clearing the junkyard, some Senior Officers mocked me that I had started again, and that Police work should not be taken to high heavens. Some even advised me to use the money I am using to do the projects to prepare for retirement.
But my father, when he was alive, always referred me to the Holy Bible, Exodus 23:1, which says, ‘Thou shall not follow the multitude to do evil, neither shall thou speak in a cause, following many to divert judgment’.
“With my moral up-bringing and as a Zonal Pastor in the Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries, I am not expected to do otherwise. The donors are present here. You can now see that your various contributions were not diverted. You now trust the Nigeria Police, as we are now rebuilding the trust and confidence of the public and applying restorative justice in our daily working,” Akinbayo said.
Other dignitaries who applauded Akinbayo”s efforts in their goodwill messages included the Ojora of Ijora, Oba Abdul-Fatai Aromire, who was represented by Chief Hakeem Ajala; Commissioner of Police, Western Port Command, Mr. Nasiru Mohammed and Dr. Ayo Ogunsan of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/08/dont-mortgage-your-goodwill-for-professionalism-igp-admonishes-police-officers/
