✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Seyifunmi hissed as she turned from the vanity to face Rosanna who was blushing with the phone at her ear. She had been on the phone with Dare since she got out of the shower. A twinge of jealousy stabbed Seyifunmi. She used to have long conversations with Dele. She enjoyed those conversations even though their subjects were meaningless most times. She swallowed the bitter lump of pain in her throat and turned to face the mirror. It was not Rosanna’s fault she and Dele broke up. Dare and Rosanna we’re back together after ten years. She had to be happy for them. She was. She shook her head. She wouldn’t be bitter about Rosanna’s love life. Rosanna deserved to be happy. And if her relationship with Dare made her happy then she’d accept it in good faith. She picked up her mascara wand and darkened her lashes. “Babe, I have to go. I love you and I miss you so much. We’ll talk later.”, Rosanna rambled and hung up. She exhaled and looked at Seyifunmi guiltily. “ I’m sorry. We just had so much to say.” “I understand. Get dressed. I need to check if my phone is fully charged.”, Seyifunmi said and stood. She looked at her reflection and ran her hands down her sides. She turned to face Rosanna. “How do I look?” Rosanna looked from the ponytail on Seyifunmi’s head to the large teardrop pendant, hanging from the silver chain around her neck to the seemingly modest, electric blue, sleeveless, flare jumpsuit. Rosanna knew the jumpsuit had slits by the sides that ran up to Seyifunmi mid thighs. The black lace illusion neckline had a deep v that gave a hint of Seyifunmi’s décolletage if you looked close enough. And black, peep toe, sling back platforms adorned her feet. “You look as sexy as sin.”, Rosanna answered. Seyifunmi’s lips turned up in a weak smile. “Are you okay?”, Rosanna asked. “The sooner I get on the dance floor, the sooner I can feel better.” “If this is about my comment at lunch today, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. I know you can can find someone better than Dele. I was only mad you didn’t want to apologise first and you and Dele are so good together..” “Ro, I’m not mad. Really. Dele’s a bygone. And I don’t care if I get someone who takes me to dinner before a movie or someone that calls me non-stop or someone I can play games with or someone who lets me use his laps as a pillow. I don’t care. I only want to be happy and my happiness will not depend on a man. Not as long as I am Oluwaseyifunmi Oyindasola Aladesuyi. Right now, I want to dance and scream and groove and maybe get drunk but that depends on who is driving when we are coming home.” Rosanna simply nodded and Seyifunmi walked out of the room. Rosanna sighed and wondered if Seyifunmi’s happiness depended on her or on the man she called a bygone. ✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Seyifunmi struggled out of the throng of sweaty, funky bodies and back to their table. She panted as she crashed onto one of the seats. Ose and Rosanna were still battling on the dance floor. She was tired and her heels were torturing her feet. She contemplated getting a bottle of water from the bar. Before she could get out of the seat, a young man sat beside her. He flashed her a smile and she gave him a clipped one in return. He was so not her type. She looked him from his full hair to his big eyes to his small moustache. She never gave a thought to a man’s facial hair but since Dele, she preferred her men bearded. She sighed inwardly. She had to stop comparing prospects to Dele. He had broad shoulders so that was a plus. No rippling pectorals but he wasn’t pudgy. He looked like he just got off work in his blue shirt and black slacks. He liked fun. Something Dele didn’t do. She berated herself. She was doing it again. He’d do. Even if , to practice her flirting skills. “I’m Emmanuel. What’s your name, beautiful?”, he shouted above the music. “What exactly about me is beautiful?”, she said sultrily and crossed her legs. Her thighs were exposed and his eyes descended immediately. He can’t even hide it. “Everything, Aphrodite.”, he remarked. Ok, he seems educated. “Anyone can tell me I’m beautiful. Even a lout on the street can call me fine girl. I don’t give my name to a man who can’t tell me exactly what about me he finds beautiful.”, she cooed and leaned towards him in mock interest. “Why do I feel like I’m before a Sphinx?”, he said smiling. “Then you know you have only two tries left before you lose your chance. And that’ll be a pity because I find you quite intriguing, Emmanuel.”, she said toying with a strand of her hair. She leaned backwards so he could get a hint of her cleavage. “What can I say? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In my eyes, you have the prettiest eyes I’ve ever seen.” Eyes? Really? “What color are my eyes then?”, she said and turned away from him. “Brown. The most luscious brown, I’ve ever seen.”, he replied. She turned to face him and tsked. “Third try gone wrong. If you had said black, I might have been inclined to give you another chance. If you had said gray, I would have told you my name. Emmanuel, my eyes are charcoal and they’ve never been brown. Not when I walked into this club, not when I danced and certainly, not now.” Only Dele had gotten the color right. She realized she’d never get him out of her system if she kept going through men and rejecting them because they couldn’t meet up to some unknown standard Dele had set. A good one night stand would make her forget about him.. “Touche.”, he said and made to leave but she held his arm. “Don’t count your losses yet, Emmanuel. You did intrigue me and I think you deserve a reward.”, she whispered and pressed her lips softly to his. She smiled wickedly at his reaction to her kiss. “How about a dance?” ✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Rosanna's eyes met Ose's and an unspoken sentence passed with the gaze. What on Earth is wrong with her? Rosanna turned to look at her cousin who was seducing every man within a twenty feet radius. Even Ose seemed affected. She twirled and whined her waist and hips provocatively. She was asking for something with that dance and any of the men around would love to give it to her. From the looks of things, the guy she was grinding and undulating against would not be able to take his hard-on any longer. She knew Seyifunmi loved being the center of attraction but she never went this far. This was borderline f ***play and seduction. Seyifunmi wasn’t a one night stand lady. Why on Earth was she dancing like she wanted to start on orgy? She had to put and end to the madness. She walked up to her cousin and pulled her off the dancefloor, ignoring her shouts and pinches of protest. “What the hell, Ro?”, she yelled in the hallway by the restrooms. “What the hell to you too? What the f*** was that?”, she asked pointing in the direction on the dancefloor. “Dancing.” “That wasn’t dancing. That was a mating call. That was come, f*** me, I’m h*rny as hell. That was not dancing.”, Rosanna shouted. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”, Seyifunmi said impenitently. “I don’t know what has come over you. But get your shit together and…” “Who exactly are you to tell me what I should do? You’re not my mother and last time I checked you’re not my sister.”, Seyifunmi hurled. Her words slapped Rosanna so hard that she blinked in shock. “You don’t tell me what to do.” “Youre right. I’m not your sister but I’m not going to let you act a hooker cum stripper just because your head isn’t on straight. If you want to offer yourself on a platter to the whole of Lagos because your hung up on Dele, be my guest. But I won’t be part of the audience. I’ll just advise you to think past the now and think of tomorrow. I’m leaving.”, Rosanna hurled and left her standing there. |

✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Jolá Ige looked at his sons and shook his head. He couldn’t believe the words they had uttered that afternoon. Impenitence coated their faces and demeanor. He could feel the heat their anger but theirs didn’t match his. He couldn’t stomach the insults they doled to Elsa. Not his Elsa. Not the mother of his first born. Not the woman that made him a father. He watched his wife walk in with worry on her face. She met her sons standing with their arms crossed and her husband sitting in fury hitting his thighs together, mumbling under his breath and eyeing his sons. “Kemi, sit down.”, he said without looking at her. She could tell this wasn’t the time ask questions. She sat opposite her husband. She watched him perch on the edge of his sofa. “Kemi. Ba awon omo e s'oro. Talk to your children. This attitude of theirs will make me disown them.” “God forbid.”, she said in fear and snapped her fingers around her. “Oluwatobiloba, Oluwaremilekun, Ibukunoluwa, what did you three do?” “We caught your husband with another woman.”, Ibukun said. “You can see the way he is referring to me.”, Jola said pointing at him. “They came to the hospital today and started calling Elsa and Bamidele all manner of unprintable names. I know they don’t know the circumstances that brought us together. Tell them. If I hear that they approached Elsa or Bamidele or they insulted them, they can forget they have a father.”, he put in and left the room. Kemi sighed and bowed her head. She had dreaded this day. She had hoped that it would never come. How was she supposed to tell them the truth? If only they didn’t act so badly, then she’d never have this conversation with them. “Sit down.”, she said. “Mummy, I don’t understand how you can take this sitting down. He is cheating on you and…”, Remilekun started. “Will you shut your mouth and sit down?”, she snapped. “What circumstances is Daddy talking about?”, Tobiloba asked as he sat. “You were never supposed to know. And if not for the stupid stunt you three pulled, I would have taken this secret to my grave.”, she said. “What are you talking about?”, Ibukun asked and sat close to his mother. “You see, Anjola Ige is not cheating on me. He is too honourable for that. The woman you saw him with was his first wife. The reason he left her is not your business. I met him when my in-laws wanted to kill me with their barbaric widowhood trial by ordeal. I escaped and I was lucky enough to be found by him. I had almst died when he found me and I owe him my life. He nursed me back to health. He married me to protect me from the wrath of my in-laws. I was seven months pregnant with you, Remilekun then. Tobi, you were just over a year. He protected us despite the heartache he was going through. If it hadn’t been for him, we would have died.”, she explained. “Are you saying he is not our father?”, Remilekun asked. “Im saying he stepped into the shoes of a father when he didn’thave to. There’s a reason we don’t celebrate our wedding anniversary. We got married two years before we adopted you, Ibukun. To protect you all from the nasty truth, we vowed never to tell you this. If you hadn’t provoked him, he would never ask me to tell you this.”, she said. “So, none of us are his children?”, Ibukun asked. “My womb was badly damaged after having Remi. I couldn’t conceive again. That’s why we opted to adopt you Ibukun and Itunnu.”, she said and sighed. “This doesn’t mean he doesn’t love you. He loves you three so much. He loves your sister as well. But you have to understand him. You insulted the mother of his son. It is natural for him to react the way he did.”, she explained. “He loves us?”, Tobiloba asked as he stood. “Yes, he does.”,his mother answered. “I doubt it. He has no reason to. He simply had no choice with his wife and son gone. Now they’re back, he has no use for us anymore. I am grateful for his care over the years. But I don’t buy that he loves us. I’ve concluded my dealings here in Abuja. I’ll be leaving for Asana first thing tomorrow morning. Say me well to your husband.”, Tobiloba said and left. ✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Gabriel groaned as he pushed open the gate of his compound. The clanking of the gate as he shut it caused his head to throb and bang. His concussion was barely healed but he couldn’t afford the hospital bills. They had already taken a sizeable portion of his savings. He couldn’t believe the woman he loved could do that to him. Anger seethed within him. He did everything she asked and she couldn’t love him in return. Was loving him such a bad idea? Ever since she came up with the revenge mission to make Tinu pay for getting her fired, he stood by her despite the ludicrousness of her notion. MJ firmly believed that if it weren’t for Tinu who Bewitched her boss and caused him to fire her for not being able to find her, she would have been able to take a loan from her workplace for Simon’s transplant. Simon’s heart failed and MJ blamed Tinú. Despite the absurdity, he helped her orchestrate her plans and bring them to fruition. How could she not love him? He shuffled to his apartment and met Tanya sitting in front of his door. God, he wasn’t ready for drama and pretense. He rolled his eyes as she jumped up from the threshold to meet him. “Gabriel, are you okay?”, she asked in panic, looking at his bandaged head. “Please, reduce your voice.”, he groaned. “Sorry.”, she whispered. He fumbled his pocket for his keys and brought them out. Tanya collected them from him and opened the door. He mumbled a thank you and entered his house. He crashed onto the nearest sofa. He wanted so badly to sleep but his stomach grumbled telling him sleep wasn’t the next thing. “What do you want to eat?”, Tanya asked. “Anything, please.”, he sighed. ✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Seyifunmi stormed into the café and looked around for her cousin. She found her in a corner having lunch with a friend. She stomped towards that direction and sank onto the empty. “Good afternoon, people.”, she greeted and picked up Rosanna’s bottle of water and downed it. Rosanna sighed at the typicality of the act. “Ose, my cousin Seyifunmi. Seyifunmi, my new friend and one time crush Ose.” Seyifunmi smiled and assessed Ose from head to toe unabashedly. “I thought you were exaggerating when you said he was dropdead gorgeous.”, Seyifunmi said and smiled flirtatiously at Ose. Rosanna’s jaw dropped. “You’re becoming a flytrap again.”, Seyifunmi cautioned still ogling Ose. “First off, I said he’s a showstopper not dropdead gorgeous. Second, can you stop staring at him like he’s a piece of meat at Oyingbo market.”, Rosanna chided. “Please, can you stop using Oyingbo market in all your references? It’s getting annoying. Ose, I’m sorry. I was just fooling around.”, Seyifunmi said and picked up Rosanna’s halfeaten sandwich. “Its okay.”, Ose said and let out a breath of relief. “You looked like you were going to run for the hills any second.”, Rosanna said giggling. “The hills aren’t far enough.”, Ose said laughing. “Why are you here? Don’t tell me you left the house to come and steal my lunch.”, Rosanna said. “Haha. I steal your lunch because I love you. My date was a horrid mess and I needed to bitch about it.”, Seyifunmi said. “That was today?”, Rosanna asked and leaned forward in anticipation of the hot gist. “I ended up with the most arrogant penny-pincher. He makes Mr. Krabs look prodigal.”, she said. “That bad?”, Ose asked. “We went to see a movie with a bottle of water and a Buttermint.”, Seyifunmi exclaimed and the other two burst into laughter. “its not funny.”, Seyifunmi said. “Sorry.”, Ose apologized. “Why are you telling her sorry? I warned you, didn’t I? Not to throw Dele away. At least, Dele would take you out to eat a three course meal before seeing a movie. Now, you’re with a stingy miser, you’re complaining. The last guy was a thief. The one before that was a pervert. Don’t worry. The next one will be a serial killer.”, Rosanna said and hissed. “That’s what you’ll say?”, Seyifunmi asked crestfallen. “Don’t mind her. We’re going clubbing. Do you want to come along?”, Ose offered. “Who’s we? I never said yes.”, Rosanna countered. “We’ll be ready by nine.”, Seyifunmi piped up in alacrity. “Like I said. Who’s we?”, Rosanna asked and the other two giggled. “I’ll borrow your metallic grey dress. You can wear yourred dress.”, Seyifunmi said. “No. That red dress is only for Dare’s eyes.”, Rosanna said and they catcalled causing her to smile in embarrassment. |
Guys, I'm really sorry for the skimpy updates. There's been no light and no fuel. I promise a lengthy update on Sunday, once I'm able to charge properly in church. Please guys just so you prepare your hearts and minds. Get your tissue boxes ready. Ocean of Secrets will be coming to an end in the next chapter and surprisingly with a cliffhanger I never intended. The sitch is that after this book is done, I'm probably gonna take some time off to edit and I'll publish, God willing, on Okadabooks. So the next book might not start until January. Or as the Spirit and my love for you guys lead. I love you guys so much. You've bolstered my confidence in my writing and I'll never forget you for that. |
clipz01:God, guy you compared me to Mario Puzo. I think that the best compliment anyone's ever given me. Thanks boo. Thanks for the beautiful words. Please bring on the criticism. I need it badly. But please o, constructive criticism. Please o. Before you see the ugly of MillieAdemi. You've been warned o. Thank you love. |
“So how did things go with your friend?”, his mother asked. Dele sighed and said, “That was Seyifunmi.” “So what did she say?”, his mother asked in curiosity. “Nothing much. She said sorry. Maybe for blocking me. I’m not sure. I guess she’s moved on. Things are over.”, Dele said. “She broke things off?” “Impliedly. She’s been in Lagos for months. She wants nothing with me anymore. I doubt she’d have ever reached out if we didn’t meet today. It was a nice relationship. Soothing even. But it’s not meant to be. And I don’t want to talk about it again.” “Ok. If that’s what you want.”, his mother said. ✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Tinu’s eyes analysed the worn faded wood of the dock's floor. It was punctuated with the pointillism of termite art. The guard behind her nudged her in the back but she stood still. That dock would be where she’d stand while mere people strove to prove she killed the man she loved with all her soul. If they were successful, then she’d die for what she knew nothing about and her children would live the lives of orphans. A sob tore at her throat but swallowed the painful lump. Today wasn’t the day for tears. She needed to be strong more than ever. She slowly climbed the steps leading to the dock and the guard followed her. He unlocked her handcuffs and left her alone to stand for trial. She turned around and saw Ajiri, Dele and Felicia on one side and the Oduah clan on the other side. Monique's face was fretful and she gave her a weak smile. Margaux noticed and swatted her sister’s hand Bridget, her mother-in-law was expressionless where her husband’s face was the epitome of justice, with a stern look on his face. Tinu could tell he was praying for her to get a death sentence rather than life imprisonment. She knew they loved Chris but they ought to believe her. She couldn’t have killed Chris. If she wanted him dead, she’d have let the cancer do it for her. She turned to face the head of the court. Soon, a judge would sit there and decide whether she was to live in captivity or die. Her lawyer had told her that with the gravity of the evidence the prosecution had she’d be lucky to get life imprisonment. He would decide if her children would grow up without the love of a mother. He would decide if she’d ever hear her son play the piano again. He would decide if she would ever see any of Tóminí’s drawings again. He would decide if she’d ever see her love in Chris Junior again. He would decide if she’d ever attend any graduations or convocations. He would decide if she’d ever see Tóminí in a wedding dress. He would decide if she’d ever see her children happily married and enjoying what she never did. The man held her entire life in his hands. “Please, your attention everybody!”, the clerk of the court shouted. “I’m sorry to inform you that Justice Ekpo is in the hospital undergoing a major surgery. Hence, cases scheduled for today through to next week have been shifted. Counsels should please come for adjournment dates next week.”, the lady continued. |
Slyvesterjosh:Thanks love |
Elsa turned to leave but the words of one of his sons stopped her. “You should be ashamed of yourself. You are bouncing your granddaughter while flirting with a married man. You’re a disgrace to womanhood.”, Remi hurled in anger. “If you like your head to remain on your neck, I suggest you take that statement back.”, Dele said and walked up to them. “And if he doesn’t?”, Tobiloba said. “Dele, please let’s go. They’re worth it.”, Elsa begged. The glare he gave her silenced her. “I will not stand by and let the spawn of this worthless piece of scum insult my mother.”, Dele said and dropped the baby carrier and walked closer to his father’s sons. “Bamidele, please just go with your mother. I can handle this.”, Jola said. “Do not mention my name. Ever.”, Dele said. “The man you are referring to as worthless piece of scum is our father.”, Ibukun said. “If you know he’s a worthless piece of scum, tell your home wrecker of a mother to…” He didn’t get to complete the sentence before Jola's palm connected with his face in a resounding slap. “That’s enough. Do not ever refer to Elsa as a home wrecker. Do you understand me?”, Jola shouted at his son. “If there are issues between your mother and I, it is our problem. Never ever should you insult the mother of my firstborn son. I will not stand by and watch it happen.” The three Ige boys looked at their father in awe. “Elsa, I apologise on their behalf. This won’t repeat itself again.”, Jola said. Elsa opened her mouth to accept his apology but Délé’s voice rang clear. “It better not. The day I see your bastards near my mother, that is the day you will mourn over them.” ✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Seyifunmi cried and rested her head in Rosanna’s laps. Rosanna stroked her hair with one hand and typed on her phone with the other. She read the reply Dare sent her and stifled a giggle. “Ro, what do I do?”, Seyifunmi sobbed. “I’m but this is a classic case of I told you so. I’m not gonna skimp on words. I did tell you so. I told you to apologise and reach out to him but you wanted him to apologise first. So much for that.” Seyifunmi raised her head and wiped her tears. “Did you not hear me when I said he told me the baby is his?”, she bawled. “He cheated on me.” “He might have said it to spite you. I mean you’ve been in Lagos for months without getting in touch. He probably assumed that you’ve moved on. He didn’t want to seem like the loser in the relationship. It’s just a game of pride.”, Rosanna said as she replied the message she got. “I doubt it. Dele’s not the type to play that sort of game. And he’s not one to deny his children. He told me straight up when we began dating that he was a divorcee with two children.”, Seyifunmi countered. “Ok, if you say so.”, Rosanna said smiling at her phone. Seyifunmi snatched the phone from her cousin causing her to cry out in protest. “I’m trying to make sense out of the situation and you’re texting? I’m your cousin. Family before men.”, Seyifunmi said. “Fine. Sheesh! What are you going to do? Do you want to talk to Dele? Has things out?”, Rosanna asked. “No. If he’s moved on, then I’ve moved on as well. I was wondering if Dare has any friends here, you could hook me up with.”, Seyifunmi said. Rosanna’s jaw fell and Seyifunmi tipped it back up with her fingers. “P’anu de. Esinsin n bo.” “Oluwaseyifunmi Aladesuyi, you have a problem. You don’t just know it yet. Give me my phone.”, she chided and snatched her phone out of Seyifunmi’s hand. “I should hook you up, abi? Don’t worry. Come back next week. “, Rosanna said and hissed. ✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ “I don’t know what that man’s problem is. I honestly don’t know. He has a wife and children. What does he want with us?”, Dele said. His mother kept mute and looked at the dashboard. “God saved those bastards of his. Ma a ti f'oju won ri mabo. I don’t even know why you entertained him. I’ve told you to warn him. You don’t want to hear now. If I should beat him up, I will not listen to stop. E ku ku mo ni.”, Dele continued and slowed down as they approached the traffic. “You didn’t have to call them bastards or your father a worthless piece of scum.”, she stated still looking away. “Let him know what it’s like to have the children of his loins called bastards. And a worthless piece of scum, that’s what he is. If they come to the house, let me know. I know their type. They are bastards and they don’t heed warning. They will always need a scapegoat. Mummy, if they come to the house and you don’t let me know, eyin ni ma ba fa o.”, “Dele, will you at least calm down? The man you are calling all manner of unprintable names is your father. His blood flows in your veins. You are to honor your father and mother. Don’t let your anger make you son against God.”, his mother admonished. “I maintain what I’ve always said. My father is dead. Besides, the same Bible that said honor you father and mother, admonished parents not to vex their children to wrath. Is it not the same Bible that said he who does not provide for his family is worse than an infidel or that a man that puts away his wife for no just cause commits adultery? Let him face his own case with God and let me face mine.” Dele said and stepped on the accelerator. |
Mofy123:Sorry. Hope it wasn't too badly burnt. |
✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Seyifunmi sighed as she left the consultation room. Rosanna and her malaria. She looked at the prescription the doctor gave her. She turned at the corner and bumped into Dele and an elderly woman carrying a baby. She recognized the woman from some pictures she had seen on his laptop. She immediately descended into a genuflection. “Goodmorning ma.”, she greeted. “Goodmorning my dear.”, the woman replied. The greeting was followed by a long awkward silence. Seyifunmi stared at Dele at a loss for words. She looked from his eyes to the baby carrier in his right hand. Did he have another child? She looked accusingly at him but he remained stoic. She wished he would give heer a sign or something. She had to know. Was the baby in his mother’s arms his? “Dele, why don’t you catch up with your friend? I’ll take Regina for her immunization. We are already late as it is.”, his mother said and left with the baby. Friend? He didn’t even introduced her to his mother. “Seyifunmi, how are you? How’s your mum doing now? Are you back in Lagos? What are you doing in Abuja?”, Dele started. “Im fine. My mum’s better. Um, yeah. I’ve been back for a couple of months. My cousin and I came for the wedding of her boss.”, she said. She watched his eyes dilate momentarily in shock and his stoicism returned. “That’s good to hear. It’s good to see you.”, he said with a plastic smile on his face. “If you’ll excuse me.”, he said and made to leave but she held onto his hand. “I’m sorry.”, she said in desperation. “For what exactly? You didn’t offend me, at least not from the way I remember things went down. You said the truth. I was being a jerk about the situation and to my mother. You brought me back to my senses and I am grateful for that. There’s nothing to apologise for.”, he said. There was no need for her to be sorry now. Not after she blocked him from calling her and on all social media platforms and definitely not after she didn’t reach out to him when she had been in Lagos for months. He kept watching her eyes descend to the baby carrier. “Is she yours?”, Seyifunmi asked, her voice quivering. “Yes.”, he said. “Then, I guess congratulations are in order.”, she said and cleared her throat. “Thank you." " Where’s her mother?”, she asked. “She died in labour.”, he said. “I’m sorry. I will see you when I see you then.”, she stated and left. He turned to look at her. He ignored the twinge of the pain in his chest and walked in direction of the paediatric ward. ✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Elsa Daramola bounced the bawling baby and hummed in her ears. Apparently, her magic didn’t work on babies who had just received injections. She paced the length of the hallway waiting for Dele. She wondered just how long it took to settle the bills. She turned in the other direction and bumped into her ex-husband. She felt anger well up in her. She hissed and walked past him. “Elsa, can we talk?”, he asked. “Sorry, I can’t hear you.”, she said and continued humming, hoping Dele would take longer. She didn’t want a world war three to happen. “Please we need to talk about somethings. Please.”, he begged trailing after her. “Look, Dele doesn’t want to see you. And frankly, neither do I. If he comes back and sees you here, I won’t be able to hold him back. Go back to wherever it is you came from. I beg you in the name of God. Please.”, she stopped and said. “Look, Elsa. We need to talk. I don’t care about Dele…” “I will advise you to. He’s promised to put you in a stretcher. And with this baby, I don’t think I’ll be able to hold him back. Go away, Jola.”, she said. “Dad?”, a male voice called. Jola and Elsa turned and saw three young men. “Ibukun, Tobi, Remi, what are you three doing here?”, he asked. “We came to take you out for lunch.”, Ibukun said. “So this is what you do here? You run after other women?”, Tobiloba said in anger. “Mum can’t sleep or eat, thinking she offended you. Whereas you have another woman on your mind.” Elsa turned to leave but the words of one of his sons stopped her. “You should be ashamed of yourself. You are bouncing your granddaughter while flirting with a married man. You’re a disgrace to womanhood.”, Remi hurled in anger. “If you like your head to remain on your neck, I suggest you take that statement back.”, Dele said and walked up to them. |

Mofy123:Then pray Seyifunmi gets sense and goes to make up with Dele. But then is Tinu and Dele together such a bad idea? |
PrudySara:Actually, Chris died. That was my original intention but then something silly came to my mind and I raised him from the dead. I totally love being a writer. Gabriel, well. He got what came to him. Moral lesson: don't do crazy things for love. I stand to negate Hercules and Megara's theory. Or maybe you can do crazy things when you're in love. Just make sure one of you is related to Zeus. Reunion party loading. |
chetaobi:Thanks love. We aim to please. |
Mofy123:I'm glad I unghosted you. Thanks love |
tonysunkan:Thanks love |
mychiveous:Ok. Let's put it like this. Only Chris's father knows Chris is alive. That's all you're getting out of me. Wait till book 2 |
Ok, so I kept this from you guys. Don't crucify me. CHRIS IS ALIVE!! Don't ask me how. You'll find out in the second book. You're all amazing. Thanks for the love and support. |
✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Gabriel opened MJ's door with the spare key she had given him. He just heard from their eye and ear in the hospital that Tinu’s baby passed on and she had been buried. He hoped that with this development, MJ would finally give up on her revenge mission and give him a chance. He locked the door behind him after entering into her apartment. A chorus of moans and groans welcomed him as he crossed the threshold. He heard MJ's breathy voice beg and plead and her lewd grunts as he gave her what she was pleading for. His head spun. How could she? How could she? He charged into her room in anger. The sound of the door being opened stopped them in their acts of lust. They turned to stare at him like deer caught in headlight. Gabriel looked at the man on top of the woman he loved and killed him with his glares. “Out!”, he yelled. The man looked at MJ and back at Gabriel. “Are you deaf or you want my fists to interpret. I said get out.” MJ covered herself up with a blanket and bowed her head in grievance at being cockblocked. The man jumped out of the bed and scrambled around for his clothes and scurried out of the room. “Gabe, I understand we are like siblings but that doesn’t give you the right to invade my privacy. What I do in my closet is none of your business.”, she said as she got out of the bed. She was making her way to the bathroom when Gabriel said, “F*** siblings and privacy.” “Excuse me?”, she said and turned to face him. “You heard me. You slept with that guy and that is my business.”, he roared. “Look, Simon is dead. While he was alive I was faithful to him. Now he’s dead. I waited for four years. I’m not a nun.”, MJ defended and stood akimbo. “F*** Simon. Who is talking about Simon?”, Gabriel said. “You were supposed to be mine. I met you first. I liked you first. But that bastard went behind my back and asked you out.” “What are you talking about?” “I was the one who sent you love letters everyday. I sowed the seed and Simon came from nowhere and went out with you. I said nothing. I felt if you loved him and were happy with him then my feelings didn’t matter. Now, he’s dead and it’s my turn.”, Gabriel complained. MJ raised her palm and slapped him. “What do you think I am? A toy that you can pick up after your brother is done with it? A hhand-me-down? That I am so randy and desperate that any Onwumere brother will satisfy me? Gabe, answer me. I don’t care about whatever love letters you may have written. I dated Simon because I loved him. I loved your brother and I will not insult him and your brotherhood by going out with you. If you have feelings for me then too bad. I don’t freaking care.”, MI said. Gabriel blinked and shook his head. “Youre joking, right? You love me, right?”, he asked as he inched closer to her. “Read my lips, Gabriel. I don’t love you.”,she gritted. Gabriel pulled her flush against him and kissed her. She pushed against him and shoved him away. “Are you mad?”, she hurled and slapped him again. “Are you insane abi you are planning to be? What did you smoke that gave you the temerity to kiss me? How cheap do you think I am?”, she shouted and raised her hand to slap him but he caught it and slapped her. “Gabe?”, she asked in shock. And he slapped her again. “You can use me but you can’t return my feelings. I gave you and your stupid revenge plan three years of my life so that you could love me…” “I never asked you to love me.”, she shouted back. “Guess what. I never asked to too.”, he said and slapped her. “Id have understood if you were still mourning but you were giving what’s mine to that idiot.” He said and slapped her. She fell to the floor from the impact. “You slut. You were giving what is mine to that good for nothing. What did you say? You were not randy or desperate for any Onwumere brother but you can give yourself to a nobody.”, he yelled as she stood. “Gabriel, leave my house.”, she said sniffling and wiped the tears on her face. “No, you are mine. Do you understand?”, he said and pulled her to himself and kissed her. She resisted him but he forced himself on her. He held her head tight as he shoved his tongue into her unwilling mouth. She took the opportunity to bite him. He groaned and let go of her. She made to run out of the room but he held onto her hand. She kicked him in the groin and pushed him back. Gabriel tripped from the pain and hit his head on the wood at the foot of the bed. He fell and didn’t get up. ✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Jason Oduah groaned in agony as he dropped the call. His granddaughter was dead. He had invested so much in Owen Edoghame and the useless man had been able to ensure his granddaughter got the best care. How did he get surrounded by such useless friends that couldn’t return favours? He had lost Chris and now Regina. It wasn’t fair. The children of his only son gone just like that. He sighed. Well, Chris could have children again once he was up to it. It was only a matter of time. “Dad, are you okay?”, Chris asked in worry. “I’m fine. Take your medicine.”, his father said smiling. “Im so happy you’re feeling so much better now. I was so worried when you were in coma. You’re the best thing that ever happened to me..” “Im sorry I made you worry. I’ll try my best to feel better.”, Chris promised and swallowed his drugs. “I know you will. Sleep. I have some work to attend to.”, the man said and turned off the bedside lamp and left the room. |
Zuriel100:Mustard seed faith is what I have, dear. Thanks for the vote of confidence. |
Ochyglowsglows:Awwn, will do just that. Thanks love |
✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Tinu smiled as she entered the visiting area. She thought it was Felicia with another letter from the twins. She really wanted to read their replies to the last letter she sent them. Tóminí had complained that her teacher called her a dummy in front of the whole class and said if she had half her brother’s brain she wouldn’t be so dumb. The paper her daughter had written on was dried with tears. She had instantly called Ajiri with an inmate’s phone. She told her to go to the school and complain to the school authorities. No teacher had the right to call her daughter dumb. Granted, she wasn’t as brilliant as her twin but that didn’t give her the license to insult her. She hoped there had been changes. She had written to her children, instructing them to read together. Temi had to pull his sister up. She had seen some siblings in her secondary school do the same. Rather than commend the brighter child, their parents had charged him or her with the responsibility of helping the average child. She felt it was necessary so as not cause a rift between them. She wanted them to be close. Her smile widened as she saw her visitor was Ajiri but the smile slowly crumpled as she saw Ajiri’s teary eyes. “AJ, what’s up.”, she asked worried. “Tinu, I…”, she said and grabbed Tinu’s hands. “Are you okay?”, Tinu asked. “Tinu, I’m so sorry.” “What do you mean by you’re sorry? What’s happening?”, Tinu said with her voice going up a couple of decibels “I…God… I wish I didn’t have to be the one to tell you.”, Ajiri sobbed. “Tell me what?”, Tinu shouted in fear. “Regina is gone.”, Ajiri whispered in tears. “Gone where? She’s a three month old baby. Where did she go?”, Tinu asked in incredulity. “She passed on two days ago..”, Ajiri said. “What?!”, Tinu shouted. “I’m so sorry…” “The doctor said she was doing fine, that she was healthy. How could she… What happened?!”, she whispered as tears fell from her eyes. “The doctor said her lungs failed.”, Ajiri explained. Sadness welled up in Tinu. She thought the danger had passed. The nurses had said her baby was a fighter. Most foetuses didn’t survive the hunger Regina did. Let alone the rape. Why did Regina stop fighting? Why didn’t she live for her? Tinu cried as she realized she never held her baby in her arms. She didn’t kiss her once. She was never able to tell her she loved her. She never even saw her daughter with her own two eyes. She couldn’t blame the poor girl. She had suffered so much so early in life. Maybe her daughter deemed her an unfit parent and decided to leave her. She probably felt unloved. Maybe, she didn’t want a mother that couldn’t protect her, that couldn’t be with her. “When is she going to be buried? I want to hold her just once. Even if it is her corpse.”, Tinu said sniffling. “The hospital called the director two days ago. They wanted you to come for the burial. When you didn’t show up, they proceeded to bury her yesterday. They said they have a policy not to keep babies for more than a day in the mortuary.”, Ajiri said. “What?!”, Tinu shouted. “No one told me anything.” “I thought as much. That’s why I came here.” Tinu sobbed hard. Her daughter came and left. And she didn’t see her once. ✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Elsa Daramola laughed as Dele carried the crying baby frowning as he didn’t know how to make her stop crying. She collected the baby from him laughing and at once the baby stopped crying. “How do you do that?”, Dele asked his mother. “Practice and babies love me.”, she said gloating as she bounced the little girl. “How are you two doing?”, he asked. “Great. Regina’s a really peaceful baby. Though she can bring down the entire estate when she’s hungry . We try to keep her unhungry.”, his mother said smiling. “We?”, he asked with an eyebrow raised. “Me, Omotunde…” “And Donald?”, Dele teased and laughed. “I was going to say the nurse..”, his mother said. “So are wedding bells going to ring soon? If yes, let me prepare my list. He cannot come and take my mum just like that.”, Dele said smiling. “Its not like that between us. We’re just friends. I don’t feel anything for him and I don’t believe he does.”, Elsa stated. “Please, don’t tell me you’re going to pass up another great man for that- that – nincompoop.”, Dele snapped. “Dele, don’t insult him. he’s your father.” “Hes is not my father. I’m a bastard, remember?”, Dele hurled. “Dele…” “Don’t Dele me. Mum, please, don’t Dele me. It took him thirty two years to finally believe you.” His mother feeling an argument coming on, left to drop the sleeping baby in her room. She returned and sat beside her son. “Dele, he’s the only man I’ve ever loved.”, Elsa explained. “Then you should get out more often. You’d meet better men.” “You can’t tell the heart who to love.” “But you can teach it to be sensible.”, Dele snapped. “Dele, are you saying I’m insensible.”, his mother asked. “Yes.”, Dele shouted and got up. “When Mr. Garba proposed and you turned him down, I said nothing. I respected your decision. Now, Donald…” “Donald hasn’t even said anything.”, his mother said and stood too. “if he walks in now and tells you he loves you, are you going to accept him?”, Dele asked. “No, because I don’t feel the same way.”, Elsa answered. “I didn’t want to tell you this, so as not to hurt you. Once, when I was in SSS3, I got curious. I just wanted to know how he was, the kind of life he led. I found out, he got married again.” “What?!”, she said dejected. “I knew you believed he’d come back but he was never going to. He's married and has four children. His first son got married two years ago. The wedding was all over the internet. Big party, crème de la crème guests, it was a big shebang.” “Please stop.”, his mother wheezed. “His son is thirty-two years old. That means he remarried that same year. He threw us out in October. So probably got married again less than three months after. Is that the man you love?”, Dele continued to spite her. “Dele, stop.”, she sobbed. “Look, he never loved you. I wanted you to remain in blissful ignorance. What you didn’t know wouldn’t hurt you. But if you think you can reunite with that poor excuse of a man, I will tell you the horrid, bitter truth. I don’t know what lies he’s been telling you but tell him, I don’t want to see him in this house or around you. The day I do, his children will come and carry him to his wife in a stretcher. You know me and what I am capable of.”, he put in and went to the kitchen. |
skubido:Welcome, dear |
✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Tóminí squealed as she ran in the hallway and into the library. Ecstasy could not begin to describe how she was feeling. Dapo had showed up to school with a letter from her mother. “Temi!”, she screamed as she saw her brother reading. The entire library turned to shush her. She whispered a “Sorry” and sat beside her brother. “What is it?”, Temi said his twin's excitement rubbing off on him. “Mummy sent us a letter. Dapo's mummy knows mummy. She is an evan- evan – evangelism.” “Evangelist.”, Temi corrected. “How do you know?”, she asked. “Tega played it once when we were playing Scrabble. Where is the letter.”, he whispered in excitement. Tóminí smiled and opened her bag and rummaged for her pencil case. She zipped open the purse and pulled out an envelope. She handed the envelope to Temi and he opened it. He unfolded the sheet of paper and began to read. “My loves, How are you? Temi, can you see better now? I told Aunty AJ to inform your house mistress to give you more carrots. I know you don’t like them but please eat them, Temi. Rabbits eat lots of carrots and you’ve never seen one use glasses…” Temi chuckled at the last sentence. Rabbits can’t use glasses. But if she wanted him to eat his carrots, he would. “I heard you are going to be playing a solo piece at the National Children’s Day Celebration. My love, I’m so proud of you. I wish you good luck and break a leg, darling…” “Why did mummy tell you to break your leg? You can’t use the pedals of the piano if you break your leg.”, Tóminí asked in worry. “It means good luck.” “I don’t think breaking your leg is good luck.”, Tóminí said unconvinced. Temi wanted to devour the letter. He decided to conceded to Tóminí if it allowed him to return to the letter. Tóminí, my beautiful angel. Aunty AJ told me you started judo classes. I hope you learn to kick butt so you can rescue your brother whenever he’s in trouble. “I don’t need you to rescue me.”, Temi shouted in annoyance. The library turned to shush him. Tóminí smiled and stuck her tongue out at him. “I know fighting back bullies can seem like the right thing but there is great power in walking away or simply reporting to your teachers. Tóminí, Please work harder in school. I know you enjoy drawing but pay more attention to your school work. I didn’t like you grades last term. Temi, help your sister. That’s why you are twins. God knew you needed each other’s help. I know you are just as smart as your brother. You just need to put in more effort. Regina is doing well and I think she looks like Dad (I won) Please say hello to Dapo for me. I love you two so much. Never forget that. Please write me back and send it through Dapo. Remember eat your carrots and study harder and I love you. Love, Mum” ✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴ Tobiloba looked at his brothers playing a video game and went to put off the console. “What is it na?”, Remilekun, the youngest son of Doctor Jola Ige shouted. “Theres something going on with Dad. Can’t you two see it?”, Tobiloba said and his brothers sat up and dropped their game pads. “Dad has never yelled at mum. Never. Not in the thirty years I’ve lived with them. He was crying last night. Dad never cries. Not even when grandma died. This is a big problem.” “Do you think they’re fighting?”, Remilekun asked. “No, they were still laughing together three days ago.”, Ibukun answered. “So what could have gone wrong between then and now? I don’t want Itunnu to come back and see them like this. She’s already sad Dad isn’t coming for her graduation. If she comes back to meet him like this..” “Look, Ibukun is the least of the problems. Dad slept in the living room last night.”, Ibukun stated. “What?!”, his older brothers shouted. “I swear to God. I went jogging this morning and I saw him there.”, Ibukun certified. “Do you think mum cheated?”, Remilekun. “How will you say that kind of thing?!”, Tobiloba said in anger. “How else will you explain Dad shouting at mum, his aloofness and sleeping in the living room? It isn’t rocket science.”, Remilekun said. “She’s our mother. She deserves a vote of confidence from her children. How do you think she’d feel if she heard you. Maybe dad is just grieved by a patient he was attached to.”, Ibukun explained. “I can count on one hand the number of patients dad has lost that left him sad and down but he’s never shouted at mum like he did last night.”, Remilekun countered. “Let’s take him out. Maybe if he’s loosened up, he might want to let whatever is disturbing him off his chest.”, Tobiloba suggested. “Dad doesn’t drink anymore. How do you intend to loosen him up?”, Ibukun asked. “Leave that to me.”, Tobiloba answered. |
Chapter 23 Tears fell from his eyes as he thought of just how dense he had been. He deserved more than the slap she gave him or the disrespectful words of his son. She had told him her fears. She had told him Fola always stared at her lustfully. She trusted him enough to do something about it but he dismissed her time and time again. And when his brother acted on his lust, he chose to believe him and not his wife. He knew she had nowhere else to go. Not with her father’s death and her stepmother’s maltreatment. But he threw her out nonetheless. He threw her out with their son. With his son. He had called her a prostitute and his son a bastard. Bamidele was four or five then. He had called his son a bastard to his face. “God, what have I done?”, he cried. He had called him a bastard. His son. He had gone online to find about him. His son had been the best graduating student when he left UNILAG. He got a scholarship to MIT and graduated magna cum laude. He worked in Silicone Valley for two years and returned home to start his own company. ElsaTech had grown to be a force to be reckoned with in the technology industry in Nigeria. He had read his biography on a technology magazine site. The edition had featured an interview with Délé. He read of how Elsa had taken up odd jobs to cater for him after she got fired from teaching at his mother’s friend’s school. He had read of the hard knock life they had led till his mother met a certain Mr. Garba who had sponsored his tertiary education. Elsa had told him of the numerous times they turned hunger into fasting because they had forgone food to pay house rent and his school fees. She told him of times when he had stayed at home for a term and only gone back to school to write exams because she only raise his school fees towards the end of the term. She had washed gutters and drainages, worked as a porter in markets, as a cleaner, as a dishwasher just to take care of his son. She did anything she could lay her hands on till she met Mr Garba who helped her secure a job in a federal unity school. And he had been living his best life while they suffered. He wouldn’t forgive himself and he didn’t even expect them to forgive him. She trusted him and when she needed him to trust her, he was the first to call her a prostitute. “Arggh!”, he screamed. “Dad? Are you okay?”, he heard someone gasp. He turned and saw his sons and his wife looking at him with worry etched into their brow. “Jola, did something happen at the hospital? Did you lose a patient?”, his new wife, Kemi asked as she walked towards him. He shook his head and said, “Im okay.” “Dad, you screamed out of the blue and you’re crying? How are you okay?”, his eldest son from Kemi, Tobi asked. “Jola, please talk to me.”, his wife said. “Goddammit, woman. I said I’m okay!”, he snapped, shocking his three sons and his wife. He stood up and left the terrace. |
