5. Infernal fires

Friday 13 1939 saw the beginning of the worst bushfire in history, now known as the Black Friday bushfires.

In Victoria, Australia, almost 20,000 km² (nearly 5 million acres) of land was turned to ash, 1,300 home were burned down and 71 people died.

Several towns were totally destroyed, and three quarters of the state of Victoria was affected, giving the appearance that the whole area had been cursed during the blaze.

4. Unnatural disaster

On Friday 13 November 1970, a cyclone hit Bangladesh, causing a tidal wave and eventually killing around 500,000 people.

Livestock were wiped out, as were crops in hundreds of fields, meaning the disaster also caused mass starvation for a long period afterwards.

3. Indifference to murder

On Friday 13 March 1964, 28-year-old Kitty Genovese was brutally raped and murdered in front of a New York block of flats.

The crime is infamous because according to reports, more than 30 people witnessed the crime at their windows, without one person intervening or calling the police.

This event gave its name to the psychological phenomena Genovese syndrome (aka bystander effect), which happens when people fail to do the right thing if they’re in a crowd.

2. Devastating shipwreck

On Friday 13 January 2012, a huge cruise ship called the Costa Concordia capsized off the Tuscan coast near Isola del Giglio after it struck a reef and began to tilt.

Thirty-two people died (and possibly more due to the fact some unregistered people were aboard). The captain of the ship was found guilty of manslaughter for not evacuating passengers properly.

The cost of the rescue and clear-up was £1.4 billion, more than three times the £430 million construction bill for the ship.

1. Rugby cannibalism

On Friday 13 October 1972, a plane full of Uruguayan rugby players crashed into the snowy Chilean mountains.

Only 27 of the original 45 passengers survived, and without supplies, those still alive had to eat their dead teammates.

A few weeks later, an avalanche killed eight more. The 16 remaining survivors were not rescued until the end of December. Grim.

And on the same day of that plane crash, October 13, a plane in Moscow crashed into the ground, killing all 174 on board.
