TravelRe: Move Back To Nigeria Club by mimi234: 7:24pm On Jun 07, 2011
There are several reasons why people move back and this is best known to the individual, to be totally honest i think its a brilliant idea because the people who have lived abroad will bring back wealth of knowledge and so overall may aid the economy! The so-called 'brain gain' in action!

Yes more people entering the labour market makes it even difficult for people to obtain jobs however just because one is applying for jobs doesn't mean they don't have investments on the side, for an example my dad does all that trading shares stuff (in the UK - because obv my family resides here) my point is that some people in Nigeria may also do that sort of thing on the side.

NYSCRe: American-born And Raised Nigerians Who Want To Do NYSC by mimi234: 12:00pm On May 23, 2011
dunkwa:
I am also interested in returning back to do my nysc. I spent most of my childhood in NYC. I also did part of secondary school in Nigeria and returned back to nyc for high school, college, and grad school. I heard that the nysc would be useful especially for those who are considering moving back to nigeria but i am really not sure. I stumbled upon this forum on a google quest to find out more information on the experiences from nigerians who have been in america and are considering going back and doing an nysc. I went to the nysc website but could not find any forms, i need advice from those who have been through the process. also i have no idea where my hs diploma is, is that absolutely necessary? I have my college and graduate school degrees. what is the experience like at the abuja camp?
Hiiiiiiii I'm in the same boat as you however i think you're a little older as i haven't obtained my masters yet and I'm from the UK, either we can help each other out!, unfortunately this thread is quite old and the responses are quite slow, what I've been doing is reading loads of blogs of people who have from abroad gone to do their NYSC read these ones.

Dis Guy:
You'd have a job (assignment) if you havent arranged one yourself and since you want to give back by teaching NYSC is the best place for that as over 60% of their postings are to school or so local government offices

so says someone who's never lived in nigeria that didnt have to worry about unexpected crazy health bills, cultism and extreme levels unemployment and govt apathy

Yipee
I have already admit i am at fault, but you have to remember is wasn't my decision to be born and bred in UK its my parents decision if i had a choice i would have love to go to 9ja for a year when i was in secondary school like my friend but only the naughty children got sent back home , anyways now that i am older and able to decide for myself i would like to do my bit!

loooooooooooool at the picture above,

, anyways unlike the thread starter i actually have a reason to why i want to serve, I was born and bred (i.e. studied at all levels) in the UK and in the future i do not want to be living in the UK, i really want something new, i've been to 9ja sooo many times but for holidays and i have enjoyed myself, however like they say going on holiday and living somewhere is two different things. Sooooo i want to test the waters and NYSC provides that opportunity, it allows me to stay and work in 9ja for one year to see if i can withstand the living conditions (the cockroaches, rats and lizards are my worse enemy so i wanna see if i can handle them loool),

, anyways yeah if i do my NYSC and decide to stay there not only am i equipped with my degree and stuff to find employment but i would have done the NYSC and most companies in 9ja ask for your NYSC so its not just government-related jobs, anyways if i find i don't particularly want to stay in 9ja all i need to do is hop on a plane back to UK no problem,

The only problem i found is getting a job for NYSC i currently do see some opportunities but its still very hard any advise for that?

Also i'm still kinda deciding whether to do my masters this September i know it good to have but i dunno if i can do any more studying my dissertation for my undergrad is currently killing me slowly no easy o!!!,

On a plus side i can also speak Yoruba however if you heard me you'd probably laugh b'cos my British accent interferes so it sounds very dodgy, nonetheless i really want to do this NYSC, i would like to teach little kids in 9ja a way of giving back to the community , come on people its up to us the future generation to bring Nigeria back up , i think Nigeria has a lot of potential but a lot of us are giving up on it and settling for the west which is a great shame sad

sorry about the long post loool.

edit: ahhh i forgot to say my age i'm between 20-22, female - graduating this year x

@ post

Well-balanced and on point and good for reflection.

In the same boat as you, but kicking myself that I should have gone when youth service for overseas candidate was just for three months. Not that it really matters anyway, one can always arrange to do it in Lagos.

My plan was to go for 6 months, but I chickened out and reduced it to 3 months and recently I have been contemplating on 6 weeks, I need to make up my mind real quick before I change my mind again, lol

IMHO, the only problem you would encounter is the lethargy and apathy that permeates the Nigerian system and way of life. They are so laid-back, it might come as a shock to your system, especially due to the fact that you are coming from a Country where everything is done per hour.

Would love to know how you get along smiley
londoner:
I'm very seriously thinking about it. Trouble is, I dont know where to start. I was born and raised in London and all my immediate family is in the Uk, but I feel I want to be based Nigeria (for a year or so first to test the water).

I was thinking about doing my youth service this year, but its very daunting, it seems to be impossible to get assistance if you are not someone who was born in Nigeria.

Any advice? I would also like to be put in touch with others who are in my position. You know what they say, two heads are better than one.
Hey guys couple years down the line and i stumbled across this thread, anwyays i'm also born and bred in London but i am Nigerian, and i really want to experience living in Nigeria, i was wondering how did you guys go about this youth corper thing, i'm graduating this year!! Is their a website or a way of going about applying to be a youth corper ALSO is it just teaching? i really don't like teaching loool Please reply back

Thanks x
