TravelUSA Or Canada by mimi234(op): 4:46pm On Oct 19, 2011
Hey guys,

I'm looking to do my masters next year in either the States or Canada,

Where do you think is best for me to do so, I'm looking to do masters in finance (or finance related like international business/economics etc). I'm ideally looking to relocate from the UK.

I'm aware that after studies in the states you can apply for the OPT for max 12months and from there if lucky your employer may file for H1B visa (i think thats what its called). However what are the chances/odds of that happening, i really don't wanna stay in the States for two years and then have to come back to the UK and look for a job cry

With Canada i'm aware that you can apply for work permit after your studies how long is the permit for?? As I am looking to get into finance, Canada isn't exactly the hub of the finance world, so i'm guessing whatever financial institutions they have there jobs will be very competitive as they may not be that many firms (not too sure if i'm right so correct me if i'm wrong  undecided)

Oh I ideally would like to stay around Washington, Philadelphia, Maryland area as I will not too near and not too far from ATL where my relations stay lol - I like having my own independence lol grin - Also I hopefully will have one year full-time work experience (which includes my admin work + summer internship) hence why i'm opting for masters not MBA

If you was given the opportunity where would you pick and why? I'm looking for cost of living, standard of living, just in general pro's and con's , if this has been discussed before pls refer me to the thread

I AGREE WITH THE ABOVE. BUT MAINATIN THAT NOTHIBG STOPS A LADY FROM MAKING AT LEASST A GENTLE MAN GRADE 2.2 AND HAVING GOOD CHARACTERS.

IN THE FAMILY WAY, U NEVA CAN TELL WHO WUD CARRY THE FAMILY TOMMOROW. THOUGH CHARACTER IS BEST, EDUCATION IS STILL OKAY TOO. AS A LECTURER I KNOW THAT THE DULLEST OF STUDENTS MAKE AT LEAST A 2.4 GRADE WHICH IS A PALTRY 48 PERCENT IN AGGREGATE. AND SOME SCHOOLS EVEN TAKE LOWER GRADES FOR 2.2. IF U SEE WHAT THESE LADIES DO HERE. YOU WUD PUT A TAG OF 1ST CLASS ON ANY ONE YOU ARE INTERESTED IN. LOL
loool i agree.

I'm with you on some points, yes i will give credit to a lady with 1st class degree, she deserved the respect but that doesn't necessarily make her a better person than a lady with 3rd class degree.

I couldn't give a monkey about her paper qualification IF she is arrogant, rude, snobbish, unfriendly, dishonest, can't think outside the box. . . the list goes on . . . . practical character qualities is what defines an individual.
hmmm I agree. You cannot directly link a qualification to how a person will perform in a relationship.

I do think this is an interesting question, nobody wants to marry a dullard (or maybe i should speak for myself lol) , but basing your answer on whether you're gunna marry her or not on her qualification is not wise.

I still wonder why people get such a result especially when their parents are dashing out 000's on their education, undecided

aww there is someone out there for you

Can i ask what is your status i.e. your profession, do you still live with your mum?, ambitions,

Not to sound materialistic (which i probably am sounding)

, although a lot of girls like to form that they are not gold-digger-ish etc but a man of the marriage-able age should be in a position of which he can take care of himself and his family - this is what girls look for if you don't display this then he may found it extremely difficult to find 'the one'

Now how you interpret ways of displaying such ability is up to you  grin

good luck

justwise:
I do understand your point but this focus on paper qualification is unhealthy, a 1st class degree holder could be a bad wife, in most cases the different between paper qualification and the actually person could be compared to different between day and night.

There is no evidence out there that proves that somebody with a good result makes a good partner in marriage or even in working environment.

People should be judged based on who they are and NOT what they have.
hmm true. But do you agree that qualifications indicate certain characteristics of a person? and further agree that these characteristics is what determines if a person will be a good wife/husband or not??

e.g. If you met a lady with a 1st class degree in Medicine what does that tell you?

RomanceRe: Can You Marry A Lady With A 3rd Class Degree? by mimi234: 6:50pm On Oct 17, 2011
Not at all -  however like i said I would question why you got a 3rd class. I mean the average is 2,1/2,2 but you didn't even make average , ah ha what are you doing school - especially that uni charges ridiculous fees.

Most people i know that got a 3rd class - were either lazy or just couldn't be bothered anymore - like it or not these are characteristics and if someone has such characteristic i wouldn't want to marry you. (however if you can justify your grade you know financial difficulties, had to miss an exam for a reason or whatever etc then i wouldn't care if you got a 3rd class or not)

(It may seem like i'm bullshitting but i know what i am talking about) lolol  grin

Jah Man:
I am sure you guys are confusing the poster.
You suggested opening a biz for her, what if the lady in question do not like biz atall.I hv seen so many like that.
In my own case,I made my ambition known to a lady and she told me I announced my intention late that she's already hooked.I was shocked she couldn't even hint me as a close friend. She said she was afraid I will take it as suggesting I shld make my intention known. However, that she was wondering, "Could I have married a lady who do not have a 1st Class or a 2:1? I laughed at her and guess my answer,
"From your first year that I started teaching you,I knew you will not make a 1st class, but I still loved you anyway"

I heard that Prof Chike Obi(the renowned mathematician) told his boys not have any dealings with a lady who cannot make a 1st class or at worst a 2:1.I know the one in AMCON had a 1st class in maths and his brother a 1st class in Physics (UI). I do not know the class of degree of their wives.
Some folks also insist they must marry a medical doctor or a lawyer or a teacher.I wish them luck especially if God supports them and give them a good wife alongside the class of degree or course of study.

Let us not condemn the poster's question.I will advise him to pray well about it and God will give him direction.Afterall we all have our statistics of who we want our wives to be.It is not only in beauty,it is in everything.
that's rude, if someone said that to me i'd take as an offense.

To the topic I would question his inability to even make an ordinary 2.2 , 3rd class isn't terrible (because of course the worse grade is getting no grade at all), but 2.2 is not that difficult to obtain, now i may be biased because of course yours truly is a first-class holder, however 3rd class signals to be either laziness, intellectual inabilities etc unless he can justify why he got a 3rd class, and because of this i would be slightly weary but that's not to say I wouldn't marry a 3rd class or even worse grade holder but it does make you wonder why did you achieve a 3rd class?? If he can justify this then all is good in the hood   wink

I have to raise my hand of this;

I am very guilty in doing this, (but i don't go as far as put my clothes in the living room or any other room except my bedroom).

The worse is when i'm going out - deciding on what to wear, i get so frustrated i just take all my clothes from the wardrobe and throw it on the bed then i try to pick out an outfit - thats when you will hear me calling my mum or my lil bro (never my dad lol) where is my belt? who took my socks? , and my mum always uses my accessories without asking and and my bro always takes things like my socks kmttt (welcome to ma family life),  grin

Also i hate clutter sooo i start throwing clothes/items that i rarely use etc in the bin, i love spacious rooms

RomanceRe: Is It Good To Set Traps In Relationships? by mimi234: 12:38am On Oct 16, 2011
well for one the other person isn't suppose to know that its a trap otherwise it defeats the purpose - so technically i wouldn't know its a trap.

Like i said it shouldn't be full blown CSI type traps having the full acting on TV approach but little things, like the other poster said leaving the house dirty to see her reaction(s) etc etc
RomanceRe: Why Am I Still Single? by mimi234: 12:28am On Oct 16, 2011
for one your too confident on your looks too much that its now arrogant behavior, remember not everyone will find you attractive.

Second of all, how do you approach girls? I for one hate guys that come with funny poetry e,g u look so nice i'm speechless, you have brightened up my day, pls let me have your name (<< does dt even make sense lol), try me my love is sweet etc etc

It gets to a point dt i become so frustrated and start ignoring some people, loool

Check the way you approach ppl,

Also your looks, i for one know footwear is a big thing for guys trainers, vans, boat shoes etc etc and men usually go all out on footwear, so when a guy approaches me i usually check out their footwear for me it signals their personality, what i'm trying to say it check your appearance - get advice and opinions from female friends etc etc

note* not all girls check out the footwear - i'm just different lol
RomanceRe: Is It Good To Set Traps In Relationships? by mimi234: 12:16am On Oct 16, 2011
Contrary to what everyone is saying,

I believe its healthy to set traps (just don't do it too many times) however it depends on the relationship,

If the relationship is fairly new or still on the boyfriend/girlfriend stage then how can you possibly talk about trust , the couple is still building up their trusts - there are different levels of trust and soo setting up traps at different stages in the relationship will only make you trust your partner even more, such traps doesn't need to be full CSI-type traps lol, just simple little tests just to see how they react given certain situation

HOWEVER

If the couple in question is married then SHAME ON YOU marriage should be completely based on trust - if your thinking of setting traps then its like your doubting the relationship, which just brings stress etc etc
TravelRe: The UK officially The Worst Place Live In Europe? by mimi234: 11:11pm On Oct 14, 2011
Hmmm there's a lot of valid points on this thread.

Having lived in the UK all my life, I personally hate how everything is tight in terms of the sizes of accommodation, roads etc.

Even the average house to me is quite small and i'm a fan of big spaces, hence why I love going to the states and Nigeria.

However i do agree that the UK is very tolerant with benefits etc, thats why our taxes are so high  cry

With regards to jobs - they are actually scarce now, if your just looking for menial jobs there are loads around but if like me your looking for career-jobs then it has become sooooo competitive  cry

RomanceRe: Married Men Can Still Have Female Best Friend? by mimi234: 12:31pm On Oct 12, 2011
It depends,

If the girl in question was your best friend prior to your marriage then the girl should then become a 'family-friend' to both you an your wife not just your best friend.

But i do believe such friendships is just asking for trouble, mehnnn,

Plus having a best friend will require you to invest time and energy into that friendship if shes a girl then a lot your time and energy will be going towards your girl best friend and no wife would like to see their husbands spending that amount of time and energy on another girl.

Think wisely.
FamilyRe: Women Who Earn More Than Their Husbands! by mimi234: 11:00am On Oct 12, 2011
My own,

I personally wouldn't be transferring my salary to my husband acc why would i do that?

Secondly, just because i earn more does not mean he can't afford to pay for the household expenses. People are jumping into an assumption that if the women earns more the man is poor, that isn't necessarily true, some men earn more than enough to pay for the household expenses and still have some left over.

However if the case is that he is poor then the best solution is just to sit down and decide who pays for what , simples!, they just need to share the responsibilities.

All these people going on about love, trust blah blah blah, i'm telling you when money is involved no matter how trusting the couple is, there will always be arguments i believe the key is just communications, simply device a plan of which individual has which responsibility to take care of.

Lastly, I believe that i dictate how my salaries are spent, obv I wouldn't be just spending it any how, but i won't feel comfortable if the man is telling me how to spent me money (it may sound like i'm getting a big head but at the end of the day if you want to be earning lots of money no one is stopping you from doing so)
TravelRe: Travelling To Canada by mimi234: 11:20pm On Oct 07, 2011
Hey guys,

This thread is mainly based on the visa process but very little info is given on the universities out there,

I actually wanted to know where in Canada is there a high concentration of black people more specifically Nigerianshuh I've always wanted to know this like you know in London - Peckham and Woolwich has the highest concentration of Nigerians LOL

I'm also a 2012 fall hopeful, looking to do Masters in finance or economics , which uni in Canada would you recommend i.e. location-wise, rankings, cost of living etc ??

pls reply thanks  wink

I told you, you must get used to rejections and the likes from companies. Do your best on their tests, but don't expect that your application must be proceeded to the next stage. That is why you need to apply to as many places as possible. I myself have been rejected by a cornucopia of companies, but the rejections will never stop me from applying to a myriad of other companies. And the unpalatable part of everything is that I am not a novice in the investment banking world. I was a buy side junior analyst in Nigeria before I left for my master's abroad.

If the company you are talking about is Vetiva, which I guess it might be because an email is put on their website and people are asked to submit resumes through it, then go for it. In case you did not know, a relevant work experience is much, much better than an irrelevant work experience or nothing at all.

Have you applied to RBS, HSBC, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, GoldMan? I read in a forum that Deutsche Bank employees are racist. I am not sure if this is true.

Itankan?
You have such a beautiful spirit, i need some of that. Yeah i need to develop your strategy of applying to everywhere its just frustrating you know, one app takes forever especially if they have long competency questions. But yes i'll keep going.

Nope it isn't Vetiva lol, you know the firm tho, yeah its better to get relevant experience. Now my mum is saying i can't go shes not comfortable with me going 9ja staying with relatives (having being born and bred over here), arghhh life is just frustrating one problem after another, just pray God leads the way for all of us.

I've been rejected by UBS (<< but that was expected given the crisis they are in), DB, Citi and Credit suisse, so far i've done apps for Morgan stanley, JPM and Fidelity, PwC just waiting on their outcomes. Good luck with your apps too,

Once again thanks for the fast response. x

Hey Guys,

Yes i trolled through all 37 pages of this thread lol. grin

Quick question(s), I did all my schooling in UK that is GCSE -> ALEVELS -> UNDERGRAD.

This GPA is kind of confusing is this the same at ALEVELS or UNDERGRAD , i got 320 ucas points (a-levels) and first class in BSc Economics (undergrad) what GPA am i?

Also everyone on this thread are into engineering lol, i'm planning to do my masters in finance in the states, however i wanted to know on average ow long does it take to revise/prepare for this GRE, i plan to take it in November but i read some people took 2-4 months for preparations :O i don't have four months, do you think i should postpone my GRE its just that most deadlines are in January and I intend to begin my masters in fall 2012.

You will get used to them, don't worry. But the sad truth is that, the fact that you spent many hours filling out the online application forms does not guarantee that you would be called for a test or for an interview for that matter. Once you are okay with this, then you are good to go. I advise that you fill out as many online application forms as possible. In the long run, one of them will work.

Yes, certain sell side investment houses, and even some buy side ones, give opportunities to people for at least a 3-month internship. Just tell them that you are still a student and are only interested in an internship for some months. I am sure they would be happy to take you, considering your very nice degree class from a good university and your interest in ibanking. The only challenge I sense is that they might be reluctant to pay for your travel expenses because you are only going to spend a few months with them anyway. If you can show them that you can well take care of that part, then I believe all will be fine.

By the way, did the said company just 'cold called' you or did you fill out the company's online application? If you did fill out the company's online application form, did you apply for a normal job or for an internship? I am asking because, depending on the form that you filled, it is possible for the company to assume that you are applying for a graduate role when in fact you are only hoping to be considered for an internship.  I know that RenCap and some other ibanks in Nigeria have different online application forms for graduates, experienced people and interns. Which one did you fill?

P.
Aww thanks for the fast response, I actually went on their website and clicked on the careers section but on their careers section it had a recruitment email and it said we should send our CV to them, so i sent an email with the subject title: Internship opportunities lol but wasn't sure if they hold short-term internships, anyways hopefully they'll call back today and I'll speak with them. Do you think this will look good on my CV because this firm in question is not an international firm, however having just got rejected by Deutsche bank after the online numerical test which i know i aced because they kept my application "under-review" for the past four weeks after taking the test just for them to reject me sad, things are looking gloomly for me and I need work experience before I embark on my masters, its a must because i currently have no work experience except my part-time job as a admin assistant which is sooo boring sad

Hi,

Yes, you can! English is one of the languages spoken in Switzerland. You should also try The Royal Bank of Scotland and Goldman Sachs. Nomura and Lazards are also great to try. Who knows what can happen? Your application could be successful, you know.

UBS are currently not happy because of the rogue trader that recently caused them a 2-billion dollar loss. Try there sha.
Hey Tanimola, Yeah i'm in the process of applying to them but their recruitment process is sooo long and winded lol. I wanted to ask a quick question not too sure if you'll know the answer anyways do you know if investment banks in Nigeria do internships like they do over here, I recently been contacted by one firm via email (don't worry it isn't a scam the email was from employeename@nameoffirm.com << something like that) and they wanted to discuss times and things but i just want an internship (for a few months) because I intend to do my masters next year, do they do that? i don't wanna sound silly when they call back lol
CareerRe: European Union And Nigerian Job Hunters: Investment Banking by mimi234: 11:43am On Sep 15, 2011
i'm telling you its not about what you know its who you know that's why they hold those networking events (which i'd advise you to attend),

IB is a very competitive industry even me that was born in the UK and holds a 1st class honors in Economics from a UK uni (not a red brick but a decent uni) is struggling to get an internship,

I wanted to ask can I still apply to other EU countries even if I don't speak their language?? that would be fun to work in Switzerland

Anyways sha good luck to all I pray we all get to where we wanna be.
