Emilio Ballack, the son of former Germany and Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack, has died at the age of 18.

The teenager was involved in a quad-bike accident which police told Reuters took place in the early hours of Thursday morning south of Lisbon.

Michael Ballack's former clubs Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen sent messages of condolence to the family.

Oliver Kahn, who played alongside him for Germany and Bayern Munich, said he was "shook deeply" by the news.

"There are no words at a time like this," Khan said in a statement on Bayern Munich's website.

The German club said it was "united in grief with its long-serving player and his family".

Chelsea, where Ballack won the Premier League title, League Cup and FA Cup three times, said they were "shocked and saddened" to learn of Emilio's death.

Ballack played for Leverkusen from 1999 to 2002 and 2010 to 2012, and their sporting director Rudi Voller said: "The news came as a shock and it's hit me very hard.

"We mourn for the lad and our thoughts are with Michael and Simone."

German fourth-tier side Chemitzer FC said Emilio, who was the grandson of their supervisory board member Stephan Ballack, had completed a three-week internship with the club in 2019.

"Chemnitzer FC expresses its deeply felt sympathy for the Ballack family and wishes all relatives a lot of strength in this difficult time," they said in a statement.

Former Chelsea captain John Terry wrote on Instagram: "Words can't describe how heartbroken I am."

The captain of the football team we're trying to build arrived at about 3am yesterday (15 September 2020) weighs no 4.2kg via vaginal delivery. Baby is fine and mother is also fine. In fact, they were discharged yesterday by midday and they're home already. Big thanks to God for seamless birth and may God bring to perfect completion the good work he has started with the other mamas still carrying. You women are the true heroes. Our boring and uneventful BS coming up soon.

Congrats to all my teamie that have birthed, "july" I need help on this, all scans carries different date, going by my last menstrual circle due date should be 20th july went for scan yesterday and I also saw different date..no sign of labour for me at all.. Baby movement reduced infact I don't feel so heavy like before.. This pregnancy is just different from for the previous.. Senior mama's please come and give me tips as am tired already FloraEC mama Zaynie

No need to worry ma'am. Baby movement reducing is as a result of the size of the baby in relation to the room it currently occupies. There isn't enough room for it to flip and turn and besides it has almost if not already position itself for birth. Congrats. Your day of joy is nigh.

I just realised that we are almost at the finish line ooooo. I calculated how many months and I am 7 months gone . It seems so close to the end and yet a bit far. God bless and keep us all. I read all your mentions o but laziness to type will not let me be . Make una no vex. I see you all. How our body na? Apart from breathlessness while taking stairs and unhealthy cravings, I am doing well . Lemme not forget constipation but I have come to accept it as part of the package. It really annoying sha. I hope our babies are kicking well. I really don't know how to ascertain my baby's pattern but I know he kicks regularly enough. Please answer roll call and gist us about your well being
