Former presidential candidate, Dele Momodu, on Thursday officially joined the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

Momodu made the declaration in Benin City, the Edo State Capital, while addressing his followers.

He noted that he was promoting the interest of the people and not running for any office in the state.

said, “And I came home for the first time and I coordinated everything, then it took me over 50 years, you won’t believe it, of excruciating hard work and meticulous planning to plant a home from my modest income in Iwe.

Momodu said “So today, nobody can say Dele has no roots in Iwe. today, I am standing before you, my friends, as I humbly reintegrate myself into the political process of my state.

"People have asked me, what do you want? Do you want to be a governor, a senator? No. I just want to promote the best interests of our people.”

A significant political realignment has unfolded in Anambra West Local Government Area as prominent stakeholders from various political parties have officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The development, which occurred barely 18 days after Mr Peter Obi joined the ADC, saw the participation of leaders drawn from multiple parties across the local government area.

The three-hour meeting took place at the residential home of Chief Peter Udogalaya Aniekwe (Macpee Milinaliugwu), member representing Anambra East and West Federal Constituency, in Oroma Etiti Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area. The gathering culminated in a unanimous agreement among participants.

Coordinating the defection were the Anambra West chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party (LP), alongside a former All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) secretary and several other influential stakeholders, including aggrieved APGA members.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Sylvester Nnaluo, former Labour Party chairman, described the defection as an opportunity to pursue meaningful development and positive change for Anambra West. He criticised APGA’s stewardship of the state over the past two decades, stating that the party had failed to meet the people’s expectations.

He urged the new entrants to approach their ADC membership with seriousness, emphasising that the party would uphold transparency to avoid the internal crises and ethical lapses that plague other political platforms.

However, Chief Aniekwe, who is also the ADC leader in Anambra West, expressed confidence that the party would assume control of Anambra West. He described APGA as “an epitome of failure” and pledged to ensure accountability and transparency while working to attract developmental projects to the area through the ADC.

Also, Chief Charles Igbanugo Okafor, president-general of Ezi-Anam ward, described the defection as timely, saying it would facilitate necessary repositioning in Anambra West.

He maintained that the ADC is the only party capable of bringing transformative change to the area.

Similarly, the ADC chairman in Anambra West, Mr Jude Nwanegbo, formally welcomed the defectors and encouraged them to disseminate the party’s message across the constituency. He praised Obi’s leadership qualities, citing the Umueze Anam–Mmiata Anam Road project as an enduring example of impactful governance.

Legislative lawyers under the aegis of Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners, ALDRAP, have commenced moves to recall 26 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including the Speaker Martin Amaewhule, over the impeachment proceedings initiated by the lawmakers against Governor Sim Fubara.

DAILY POST reports that the Rivers lawmakers had on Thursday commenced an impeachment process against Fubara, accusing him of gross misconduct, including financial misappropriation.

ALDRAP disclosed the commencement of the recall process in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

In the letter, the lawyers association demanded certified true copies, CTCs, of the voters register of all the state constituencies in Rivers State.

The legislative lawyers association, in the letter obtained by DAILY POST on Friday, said several of its members are constituents of the said lawmakers and as such, it has the legal right to initiate the recall process.

ALDRAP put INEC on notice that it would go to court to press for the release of the CTCs of the voters registers if the Commission fails to make them available.

Parts of the letter dated January 8, 2026, and signed by ALDRAP Secretary, Dr Tonye Clinton Jaja, SCN, read, “Notice of commencement of recall of Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and 25 other legislators of the House of Assembly who signed the impeachment notice dated 8th January 2026 and request for certified true copies (CTCs) of the voter register of all the state constituencies of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“Contrary to the judgment of February 2025 of the Supreme Court of Nigeria that enjoined the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to work in peaceful harmony with the Governor of Rivers State by exploring and exhausting amicable methods to resolve conflicts, the members of the Rivers State Houseof Assembly have once again initiated belligerent methods.

"Ironically, both the Governor of Rivers State and the said members of the Rivers State House of Assembly are members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and ought to have explored and exhausted internal dispute resolution mechanisms.

“In light of the foregoing, as a public interest organisation of lawyers majority of whom are constituents of all state constituencies of the Rivers State House of Assembly, we hereby demand the aforementioned certified true copies (CTC) and put your Commission on notice.”

In a further reaction to the development, ALDRAP declared that the impeachment notice is dead on arrival because the lawmakers referred to Governor Fubara as “madam” in the letter addressed to him.

“The letter of notice of impeachment against Governor Fubara is dead on arrival for two legal reasons: (1) Fundamental flaw of addressing Governor Fubara as “madam” and (2) the constituents of Rivers State did not endorse or authorize the lawmakers of Rivers State House of Assembly to commence impeachment against Governor Fubara,” ALDRAP said

Ghana’s former finance minister, who is wanted at home on suspicion of corruption, has been detained by US immigration, his lawyers said.

Ken Ofori-Atta, 66, has been in the United States since January last year to receive medical treatment, including prostate cancer surgery.

The former minister, who was declared a fugitive last February and was formally charged with corruption in November, has applied to extend his stay in the US, his lawyers said late Wednesday.

They said the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement took Ofori-Atta into custody on Tuesday over “the status of his current stay in the United States”.

ICE’s online database listed Ofori-Atta as being held at a facility in the US state of Virginia.

Ofori-Atta served as finance minister from 2017 to 2024 under former President Nana Akufo-Addo and oversaw contentious tax reforms and negotiations with the International Monetary Fund.
