Shamed because you feel or know she's wrong? Which one?

Funny you only heard the missope part of the story and there you go condemning the other party already. Y'all so emotional you put emotions before common sense.

What if the missope is super dramatic? What if things were the way the lady says they were and missope didn't take her time to hear her out well enough?

I once had a phone stolen at the wrong place at the wrong time and because of my career and what reporting might do I had to pretend all is well. You know what, y'all already condemned her to the cross, enjoy the crucifixion display here on Nairaland.
Tosin Ogunsobo, is this you? 😂😂
Or should I say Leke Igbodipe? Which one are you today? 😂😂
The way you're intensely defending Dayo Ogunsobo is really something else.
But here's just one piece of advice for her: tell her to report herself at Obalende Police Station.
Canada and Ghana, my foot.
She claimed her iPhone, dollars, gold wristwatches, and several other items were stolen. Then gave different versions of how Ryan Ayobame supposedly got access to her passwords.(something everyone confirmed that she's very careful with her phone).. Thankfully, I have the recordings, just in case you decide to tell a different story to the police, your family, in-laws, and the church.
You clearly didn't know I could be this dramatic when you scammed me and then allegedly tried to package the whole thing as robbery and theft.
So let me make this very simple:
IF YOUR HANDS ARE CLEAN, SHOW UP AT THE POLICE STATION.
No more stories. No more Canada and Ghana stories.
SHOW UP AND EXPLAIN YOURSELF.

SHIKENA cheesy cheesy angry

All looks right except one issue:

If your friend is a crook, it becomes a "show me your friend and I tell you who you are" scenario.

Today, you are justified that your friend was caught by you, while she tried to defraud you. However, tomorrow, people would think twice about you - using the trusted company that you keep - to judge your character.

It is clearly not every random friend who asks you for money that you may send 200k to you at that speed.
Oga, while you're right in some ways, you're also wrong in many others.
Apparently, she asked me for some money about two or three years ago when her husband came back from Canada. I obliged her, and she returned the money almost immediately. So yes, I would be willing to help her again because she has shown integrity when it comes to paying back. I definitely wouldn't oblige such a request from someone else who I knew couldn't be trusted to repay me.
By the way, it's not like I haven't suspected this particular friend of being a bit of a crook. I just chose to let her be because everyone has their flaws and strengths. And yes, we aren't as close as we used to be.

What court convicted her of any crime? Nairaland court?

Even murderers not yet tried or convicted are only called suspects and their faces are blurred for a reason.
Bla bla bla sheep ....

Tell me why she doesn't want to come to the police station, someone who claimed Her 1 Phone 17 was stolen, her 700$ and gold wristwatch plus she returned my 200,000 to me, tell me why she gave three different accounts on how her phone was stolen and how he got access to her password, tell me why she told different people she was robbed in Ghana and another set she was robbed in Lagos, tell me what are motives were for the Lies she was telling in the different account she gave.

Posting her details on social media is a bad move until proven she was the one that orchestrated the scam. Chances are she wasn't the one that scammed you and chances are otherwise.

But then, money destroy relationships.
So what details of hers did I post on social media?....
If you're talking about the Opay number that collected the money, then that shouldn't bother you nor her since she claimed that's the scammer's number..

Just because I didn't send money to her direct account...

I EVENTUALLY GOT MY #200,000 BACK — BUT MANY QUESTIONS STILL REMAIN
Here's the Original story:
👇👇👇
https://www.nairaland.com/8730101/scammed-200000-through-friends-whatsapp

Good day, everyone. I decided to give an update on the #200,000 Whatsapp scam I reported earlier.
After I made the report and started following up with PalmPay, OPay, the police and NPF-NCCC, my friend eventually returned and contacted me.
Her explanation was that her phone had been stolen and that someone who got access to the phone/WhatsApp was the person who contacted me and requested the #200,000.

However, as we discussed, there were several inconsistencies in her different explanations surrounding how the phone was allegedly stolen and how the person supposedly gained access to her Whatsapp.

I asked several questions because I wanted to understand how someone who supposedly stole her phone could know about my relationship with her, know that she had previously asked me for money in similar circumstances, request money for the specific purpose of meeting/picking up her husband, and even respond to me with a voice note in her own voice when I asked the person to prove that she was actually the one chatting with me.

I also learned from someone close to her that she had travelled to Ghana to meet her husband, cos the request was this .👇👇👇.

(Please can you help me send 150k to my exchange agent
I need to pick my husband up by 1:30
But I can’t transfer so when he gets here I will refund you.)

This raised even more questions for me because the information I was receiving about her whereabouts and the alleged phone theft did not appear to completely align.

When I asked her to come to the police station and give her own account of what happened, she repeatedly expressed that she did not want to go to the police, citing concerns about her name being mentioned and possible implications for her visa. This was particularly difficult for me to understand because, according to her own account, she was also a victim and someone had allegedly stolen her phone and used her identity to defraud people.

She eventually told me she was willing to contribute towards the money because she said she understood that I had suffered a loss, but she initially said she couldn't refund the full amount immediately and would have to pay in instalments.
After I insisted that the matter needed to be properly addressed and that she should come and give her account to the police, she surprisingly refunded the full #200,000 shortly afterwards.

So, thankfully, I have now recovered my money. 🙏
However, I want to make something clear- she has never admitted to scamming me or admitted that she personally made the request for the money.
Her position throughout has remained that her phone was stolen/compromised and that someone else used her Whatsapp to make the request. (But I know so well it's a blatant lie)

The money has been recovered, which I'm grateful for. But there are still unanswered questions about who actually sent those messages, how they obtained the information used in the conversation, how the voice note in her voice was sent, and what exactly happened to the phone/Whatsapp account.

My lesson from this whole experience is simple: even when a message comes from someone you know personally, verify by calling them directly before transferring money to a third-party account. It could save you a lot of stress.
Thanks to everyone who offered advice and suggestions when I initially posted this. I genuinely appreciate it. 🙏

My wife divorced me after I confessed to her that I cheated once in 5 yrs of marriage. I was faithful for the 5 years we were married until she traveled and a friend disturbed me that she wanted to know my place. She came and tempted me until I fell that was it. My wife came but my conscience disturbed me for about a week until she asked me what was wrong and said I can tell her anything. I opened up and that was it.

I would have kept that secret till death but she left. I have long remarried but I still regretted telling the truth. The truth did not set me free as I expected. Please guys and girls there are somethings your spouse MUST NEVER KNOW.
One simple question to you..

How did your friend know that your wife travel and was at that time disturbing you that she wants to come and know your place...huh?

yemre:
Your chats here did not show that you spoke with her before releasing that money, and that was an error on your part! (You only chatted). I had a similar experience when a friend I've not seen in a while chatted to request for 250k. What saved me was that I called just to know that she actually did. The chat came in around 11:30pm or so but I didn't respond.i only called in the morning for confirmation after she'd gone to retrieve her line. It was then she told me that her phone was stolen the previous night.

Back to recovery. Tell that her best friend what happened and let her confirm with the lady in Ghana. But, to be very frank with you, I don't see her admitting that she requested that money (even if she did). A friend that could remember to ask you for an emergency fund but wouldn't remember to let you know that she'd be going on a journey!
I just hope Palmpay and Opay responds eventually and do something about it. If it was a regular bank now, a lien could be placed on the account (based on the court order) and she could be arrested any day she enters any branch to lodge a complaint. But fintech? I don't know!
Thanks for your concern, Yemre.

I've told her friend everything that happened between the two of us, and everyone I've spoken to about this has advised me to be patient and wait until she returns before drawing any conclusions.

My greatest fear right now, like you rightly pointed out, is that she may come back and maintain that she was not the one who requested the money. Considering that I was the one who escalated the matter to her in-laws after I suspected I had been scammed especially because the money was sent to an account that wasn't hers, I worry that she may be reluctant to tell me the truth about her trip.

From what her friend told me, she had specifically confided in her that she didn't want her in-laws to know she was travelling to Ghana to meet her husband. So, knowing that I have already contacted the in-laws and told them I suspected her phone had been compromised, she may feel that if she tells me about the trip, I could eventually tell them.

By the way, I genuinely didn't speak with her directly before sending the money. Like I mentioned earlier, this is not completely unusual between us. There has been a previous occasion when I lent her money when her husband came in and she was trying to sort out a few things but was financially stuck. So when she reached out this time, I honestly didn't think twice before helping her. I believed I was simply helping a friend who needed me.

Hello @MissOpe, were you able to recover your funds?

In case of another time, whenever you receive such a request from anybody (even if it's your mum), no matter the amount, pls call the person to confirm. Her phone might have been stolen; she might be held at gunpoint; anything could be/could have happened.
Good morning, Yemre.
At this juncture, I’m honestly confused and don’t really know what to make of the whole situation.
The message I initially received from her was that she needed money to send to her exchange agent so she could pick up her husband. I sent the #200,000 in good faith. Shortly afterwards, she requested another #135,000, and that was when I became suspicious. I asked her to prove that I was actually speaking with her, but she kept giving excuses and avoided properly confirming her identity.
Because of this, I reached out to her in-laws. That was when I was told that her so-called husband had reached out to them and said that her phone had been stolen and her line had been compromised.
Fortunately, I reached out to her best friend yesterday, and she confirmed something I didn't know before that she had actually travelled to Ghana, and her husband also travelled from Canada to Ghana so they could meet. According to her friend, she was sending pictures and videos throughout the journey, even when she got to the airport and checked into the hotel, until her phone eventually became unreachable.
She also told her friend confidentially that her in-laws must not find out that she was travelling to Ghana to meet their son, apparently similar to what happened about three years ago when she also asked me for money to meet up with her husband.
My concern now is this: because she didn't carry me along or tell me anything about this trip to Ghana, what if she returns and simply sticks to the story that her phone was stolen and compromised, when in reality she had travelled to Ghana to meet her husband?
What also worries me is that, up till now, she hasn't reached out to me despite apparently hearing that I was scammed through her phone/number. Her line has also remained unreachable.
At this point, I honestly don't know what to believe. Part of me is beginning to suspect that she may actually have been the one who made the request for the money, but I don't want to accuse her without knowing the truth.
My biggest concern now is that she may return, maintain the story that her phone was stolen, and then refuse to refund the money. I genuinely don't know what to do at this point, and that's why I'm trying to understand the situation as much as I can...

By the way, Palmpay seem not to be effective about the reports I made days back..

I called the customer care team and they keep saying they havent gotten my report, something I did more than thrice via their app.

StrangeListing:
This is a very painful experience, MissOpe, and I am deeply sorry for the loss. WhatsApp account hijacking via OTP scams is incredibly rampant right now. To give you direct answers based on how fintech recovery works in Nigeria:

1 The Bank Dilemma: OPay was wrong to bounce you back; however, PalmPay is correct that a formal Court Order (Mareva Injunction) or a signed Police Report from the anti-fraud unit is legally required to permanently freeze a suspect's wallet and initiate a chargeback.

2 Next Steps: Once you upload the Police Report to PalmPay, their fraud team will officially communicate with OPay's compliance unit. The recovery timeline usually takes between 7 to 14 working days, depending entirely on whether the scammer has already moved the ₦200,000 out of that OPay wallet.

3 Maximize Chances: Do not rely on regular police alone. Immediately forward your transaction receipts, the scammer's OPay account number, and WhatsApp screenshots to the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) via their official online reporting portal. They are highly efficient with digital tracking and can trace the BVN/NIN tied to that OPay account.

Keep pushing immediately before the funds are entirely liquidated. I hope you get a positive outcome.
Many thanks for your response to my ordeal..
I've been able to report officially online..

Hopefully I get a positive result from all these....

Nibo? The fund has been moved. Don’t you know that the skkamma used a POS shop to collect it? He collected that and went to another POS shop. That’s why he gave you another account number.

It is the POS operator that will suffer the account freezing consequences but not the skkamma. The only way you can catch the skamma is if the POS operator eventually transferred the money to the skkkammma’s account.
You may even need to arrest the POS operator, for you to be able to trace the sk.ama.

Now imagine if the POS operator and skamma.a live in a state very far from you. How do you arrest trace and arrest him?

I am 100% certain that the skam a will collect the money in cash, to avoid being traced. He won’t mind loosing some charges to the POS operator— after all, it’s a free money. He could pay up to 20k fee to the POS operator and smile home with 180k.

When next someone reaches out to you for money, call the person, to be sure it’s actually the person. You may also request the person to do a voice note to be sure. Let the person know why you requested for such so that the person doesn’t feel you are demeaning him or her.

That’s what I do.
Thanks for your input bro..

I guess there are some lessons you need to learn in a bitter and hard way.

This is exactly the correct sequence but the issue is to recover/arrest the culprit you might have spend like twice of the money defrauded. Nigeria police can track and arrest the person involved but the question is at what cost? Why will you just transfer money because someone you know sent a WhatsApp message to you and worst is giving you Fintech bank account that doesn't match the person's name?

I can't do that. I'll first of all confirm it by calling the person on his/her line or video call on Whatsapp.

This is how I handled one of them few days ago.

It is always good to double check when it comes to money transfers in this age and time.

Follow up with Moniepoint and the Police and the court perhaps the BVN linked to that Account will be flagged and at least put him or her out of business and also you don't have to scrub out the Account details for that Account. Let everyone see it.
I'm yet to freeze the account, as the police asked me to come for the report today.
