Sports › Exclusive: Man City Apply Work Permit For Iheanacho by mistabiola(op): 4:37pm On Dec 10, 2014
AfricanFootball.com can
specially reveal today that EPL
champions Manchester City
have applied for a work permit
for Nigeria youngster Kelechi
Iheanacho.

Iheanacho has yet to be capped
at full international level by
Nigeria but he has been capped
by his country at U17 and U20
levels and City are most likely to
use the special talent argument
to get the Home office to grant
Iheanacho the right to ply his
trade in the UK.

It was the same argument that
helped Chelsea to give Mikel Obi
a contract in 2006 even when by
then he was not an established
Nigeria international.

“City have applied for a work
permit for Kelechi this week,”
one of the player’s
representatives informed

“We believe he will be granted
the chance to play in England.”
Iheanacho was the MVP of last
year’s FIFA U17 World Cup,
which Nigeria won in fine style
with the forward finishing also
as the second leading scorer of
the tournament.

Last week, he was called up by
Nigeria U23 team with coach
Samson Siasia admitting he is a
big fan.
He equally shone during City’s
pre-season training tour of the
United States of America,
scoring a couple of goals with
class and composure.

Iheanacho turned 18 recently
and has been training with
Major League Soccer (MLS) side
Colombus Crew.
Earlier this year, City said they
may loan out the starlet when
he is 18 and can sign a pro deal,
but recent reports suggest they
may keep him at the Ethihad
Stadium.

Christianity Etc › Synagogue: Coroner Rejects Joshua’s Application To Suspend Inquest by mistabiola(op): 4:01pm On Dec 10, 2014
The coroner probing the September 12 Synagogue building
collapse, Magistrate O.A. Komolafe, has dismissed an
application seeking a temporary suspension of the inquest.

Komolafe, while dismissing the application on Wednesday,
described it as an abuse of court processes.

The Founder of the Synagogue Church Of All Nations,
Prophet T.B. Joshua, filed the application asking Komolafe to
put on hold further inquisition into the cause of death of the
victims of the collapsed building.

No fewer than 116 persons lost their lives while several
others sustained varying degrees of injuries in the tragic
incident.

Joshua’s application for stay of proceedings dated
November 11, 2014, came on the heels of an application he
had filed before a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.
In the said application before Justice Lateefat Okunnu,
Joshua asked for a judicial review of the coroner’s
proceedings, which began on October 13.

Among others, he had asked the High Court to determine
whether the witness summons served on him to appear
before the coroner to give testimony was not a violation of
his fundamental right.

He further contested that the coroner had been extending
his inquisitions into areas beyond his statutory purview.

According to Joshua’s lawyer, Mr. Olalekan Ojo, the duty of
the coroner was limited to determining what killed the
victims of the collapsed building and nothing more.
Ojo argued that it was beyond the scope of the coroner to
delve into the questions of what was responsible for the
collapse of the building itself.

According to Ojo, it was not the duty of the coroner to
inquire into issues bordering on building approval, soil and/
or material tests of the collapsed building.
He had therefore asked the coroner to suspend further
inquisitions till when Justice Okunnu will rule on the issues
raised.

Ruling on Joshua’s application for stay of proceeding on
Wednesday, Komolafe held that Joshua had no premise
upon which to bring the application before him.

The coroner said that since there were no parties such as
applicants and respondents or plaintiffs and defendants in
the coroner’s court but only witnesses and interested
parties, it would amount to him acting beyond his statutory
power to grant the stay of proceedings that Joshua had
asked for.

Komolafe held further that the application for stay of
proceedings did not conform with Order 40 Rule 6 of the
Lagos State Civil Procedural Rules, 2012.
The coroner upheld the argument of Lagos State

Government that filing an application before a higher court
did not automatically amount to an order to stay
proceedings at the lower court.
Komolafe held, “From the order made by the High Court of
Lagos State, there is no part wherein it was stated that the
proceedings of the coroner should be stayed as provided for under Rule 40 Order 6, paragraph (a) of Lagos State Civil
Procedural Rule, 2012.

“It is for the reason of avoiding this kind of abuse of
processes of the court that the lawmakers provided for
Order 40 Rule 6, paragraph (a) of the High Court of Lagos
State Civil Procedural Rules, 2012 for cases of judicial
review.”

Komolafe held that if Justice Okunnu had intended to give
an order to restrain the proceedings of the coroner court,
she would have done it at the point when she gave Joshua
the leave to ask for a judicial review of coroner’s inquest.
He therefore adjourned till Friday, December 12, 2014 to
proceed with the inquest.

Politics › PDP Presidential Primary Not Democratic, Says Fayemi by mistabiola(op): 3:38pm On Dec 10, 2014
A former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who is
also the national convention committee chairman of the All
Progressives Congress has described the special convention
of the Peoples Democratic Party as undemocratic.

Fayemi said this at the APC third national convention, which
is currently holding at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
The PDP convention, which is holding in Abuja, seeks to
affirm President Goodluck Jonathan as it’s presidential
candidate.

However, Fayemi described the PDP event as a coronation
and not convention as it was just a ruse to endorse
Jonathan.

He said among all the political parties in the country, only
the APC was holding an open and transparent presidential
primary.

He said, “You can see that our primary is very transparent
and is offering every aspirant a level playing field unlike the
PDP, which is holding a coronation. Theirs is just an event to
put a crown on Jonathan and that is not a convention.”

Politics › Diezani: I Am OPEC President Because Of Jonathan’s Courage by mistabiola(op): 3:14pm On Dec 10, 2014
Diezani Alison-Madueke says she would not have
been elected president of the Organisation of
Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), were it
not for President Goodluck Jonathan’s courage in
appointing her minister of petroleum resources.

Speaking on Wednesday at the end of the weekly
federal executive council (FEC) meeting presided
over by Jonathan, Alison-Madueke stated that her
proposals as OPEC president would ensure that
Nigeria doesn’t bear the brunt of the fall of oil prices.

She said it was time for Nigeria to be more
competitive.
“Nigeria has to be much more competitive at this
time and going into the future. We cannot continue to
do business as usual,” she said.

“We must ensure that we have the right enabling
parameters and indices in this country to attract the
right end-user markets, to attract the right end-user
demand for our products because they are so many
other countries that would be competing for those
end-user markers and to get that end-user demand.
“So we will have to seat down and reformulate our
entire approach over the next month or so, in fact
immediately, to ensure that we are in fact at the
cutting edge of competitiveness; we have to make
ourselves competitive in the market and we have to
ensure we are able to garner and take those end-
user markets.”
She described her emergence as OPEC president as
the result of President Goodluck Jonathan’s courage
in appointing a woman as minister of petroleum
resources.

“First of all, it wouldn’t have happened if the
president had not had the courage to appoint a
woman into the portfolio of Ministry of Petroleum
Resources, which meant that I now headed the
country’s delegation to OPEC.

“I must say that this was the daunting thing. It
happened about three and half years ago; I went into
a body which is completely male-dominated and
mostly Arab-dominated as well. But I have found that
they have come to respect me and respect Nigeria’s
voice over the last three years in OPEC very highly.

“The position of the presidency some years ago was
administratively made rotational but OPEC ensures
that it must still elect, therefore it states very clearly
that ‘we have elected’ Dieziani Allison-Madueke or
whoever happens to be the president for that year
into the position of the presidency of OPEC. And the
reason in the constitution is very clearly stated that it
is elected because it reserves the rights to reject any
minister, head of delegation or person put forward
by their country that OPEC feels is not of the right
capabilities and experience and level to seat as OPEC
president, because OPEC presidency is highly
influential and it is in fact a high ranked position to
that of the secretary-general of OPEC.”

“It is the OPEC president who seats as chairman of all
OPEC conferences at all times during that year. It is
the OPEC president who calls for extraordinary
meetings of OPEC, which will possibly happen in the
next quarter of next year if the downward trend in
crude prices continues amongst other things and
responsibilities that the presidency has today.”
Diezani Alison-Madueke, the first female to head the
body, acknowledged that her tenure for the next one
year would be a challenging one in the face of
dwindling oil prices.

“This is a very challenging time, as you know, for
OPEC and for the global crude oil wells as a whole.
Quite clearly, there has been a battle of wills
between certain OPEC countries, the big players and
certain non-OPEC countries who are big players in
the world crude oil production markets at this time.

“So it is a challenging time to take over as OPEC
president and our prayer, of course, is that we will be
able to stabilise the crude oil prices per barrel over
this period because it is critical.
She pointed out that many countries, both OPEC and
non-OPEC countries, are suffering immensely, citing
countries that have adopted austerity measures as a
means to cushion the effect of falling oil prices.

“Even as we speak, Venezuela has gone into austerity
measures and is now measuring food because they
were completely dependent on oil. Angola, Algeria,
Iran are all under duress as is Nigeria because it has
affected our budgetary benchmark. And even non-
OPEC countries like Russia who will not cut
production are already seeing a drop in the value of
their rubuck.

“As OPEC president, you will be the one who is
expected to call together the entire body at points
where they are critical impact in the market from the
price of the barrel and in this case the downward
trend of the barrel of oil.”

Labour party have appointed Barrister Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli as his running mate.
Politics › Re: Live Update: Alao Akala Wins Labour Party Primary Election by mistabiola(op):
Five governorship aspirants of the Labour Party on
Wednesday conceded the governorship ticket of the party in
Oyo State to a former governor in the state, Adebayo Alao-
Akala , during the party’s primary in Ibadan.
The five aspirants are Sharafadeen Alli, Nurudeen Akinyo,
Kazeem Adedeji, Olu Abiala and Olatunji Sadiq. Alli was
nominated as running mate to Alao-Akala while others said
they unanimously selected the former governor in the
interest of the party and the state.

Alao-Akala left the Peoples Democratic Party on Monday
when former Senate Leader Teslim Folarin emerged as the
party’s governorship candidate, citing insincerity and
injustice as reasons for his withdrawal from the party. He
immediately announced the decision to join LP.
In his acceptance speech, Alao-Akala commended the other
aspirants and the party for accepting him, expressing the
optimism that the party would form the next government in
the state.

He said, “Today marks the beginning of another history in
the political landscape of our great state. It marks the
beginning of victory over darkness, as we’re all on board to
the promised land. The events of the recent weeks spurred
us into taking this very bold step; a step that has put stop to
rumours and speculations within the political circuit in Oyo
State and Nigeria at large.

“In preparation for the 2015 elections, we set out to
actualise our ambition on our old mat, but God has another
plan for us, here we are on a marble, the Rehoboth, without
stress amidst honest and reliable people. I want to reiterate
that we never planned to leave the PDP. We were not chased
out either but it was evident that the current leadership of
the party had forgotten that politics is not the same as
election.”

The former governor said the elections were decided by the
electorate rather than external influence, adding that the LP
would embark on massive public enlightenment in all nooks
and crannies of the state.

Politics › Lagos PDP Gov Primaries: We’ll Unite Aggrieved Aspirants – Bode George by mistabiola(op): 4:29pm On Dec 09, 2014
FORMER Deputy National Chairman (South) of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George has appealed
to aggrieved aspirants who lost out in Monday’s
governorship primaries.

At the governorship primaries which was held at Yard 158,
Plot 34 Oregun Road, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, Jimi Agbaje
polled 432 votes to defeat Obanikoro who scored 343 votes,
while Adedeji Doherty and Babatunde Olalere Gbadamosi
polled 21 votes respectively.

Chief George, however, said that there are measures put in
place to unite aggrieved aspirants.
Addressing a press conference after the party’s controversial
governorship primaries, Chief George denied allegations
levelled against him that he manipulated the process in
support of Mr Jimi Agbaje.
His words: “the people have spoken loud and clear. There is
no ambiguity in their vision, there is no hesitation in their
collective truth. They have chosen Olujimi Agbaje as their
choice in the PDP governorship primary in Lagos State.”
“This victory which is a passage of next year’s general
elections is a testimony of the choice that the good people of
Lagos state are clamoring for. Lagosians need a breath of
fresh air. Lagosians have rejected the past with its twin
venom of thuggery and hooliganism, with its virulent
emblem of intolerance and calumny”, he added.
Speaking further, he said “the procedure was not designed
by me. It was done transparently, you were all there. Our
hands of friendship is extended to all those who are
aggrieved. Lagos is the most strategic state in the country
and we must not joke with it. All those who lost the elections
are our boys. We will as one big family go and fight the
enemy. Let us deliver Lagos and tell the people that there is
a better alternative for them.”

Appealing to the aggrieved aspirants, he urged them to
“come together to forge a formidable front against the
opposition party. We must unite to frustrate their strong-
hold on our state. We must work hard to thwart their return
to Alausa.
We must all put behind us the dark hindrances of personal
ambition. We must all look far beyond the pretty provincial
advantages.

We must embrace a wider platform. Where the interest of
the larger section of our people must always supersede the
narrow promptings of the few. We must move away from
the wicked, nauseating fixities of greed and senseless
acquisition. We must move away from the callous insensitive
policies of making life more difficult for the poor and
needy.”

Reiterating his resolve to unite the aggrieved aspirants, he
said “it is service before self. We are heading to Abuja for
the national convention and when we come back, we will
massage the egos of those who lost. I can assure you that we
will unite all those that lost.”
On the party’s plan for Lagos if given the opportunity to form
the next government, he said “we will promote growth with
civility, we will encourage productive enterprise without
unnecessary intrusions of power. We will march forward
with all Lagosians, ensuring balance and equity, insistent
that justice and fair play must return to all nooks and
crannies of our society.”

Continuing, he said “we know the people are with us. From
the motorcyclists to the mechanics and the artisans, from
the poorly paid school teachers to the ill-treated medical
doctors, from the vast, ceaseless bustle of Alimosho to the
quiet serenity of Epe, we shall touch everyone with gratitude
and kindness.”

Obanikoro vows to fight till the end

Meanwhile, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro has called for the
cancellation of the Lagos State governorship primaries
calling it a sham.

Addressing newsmen at his GRA office shortly after the
primaries, Obanikoro said “There is no election results and
the elections should be cancelled. The process is completely
tainted and going forward with that, will lead to an outcome
that will not be beneficial to the party.”

Asked to comment on the outcome of the exercise that
threw up Mr Jimi Agbaje, he said “my immediate reaction is
that the election was a sham. I still cannot comprehend how
accredited delegates of 806, will turn out to be 868.

To be honest with you, you can tell that it was a
predetermined exercise. People like us are not in this
democracy for the sake of it, we are in it to ensure that the
right inns are done so that country can be on the right path.
We intend to fight this, there is an opportunity for an appeal
and we will appeal and we hope the party will do the right
thing.”

Accusing Chief Bode George of being responsible for the
alleged confusion within the Lagos PDP, he said “Bode
George has been the problem as far as this party is
concerned and there is no doubt in my mind that he
supervised this electoral malpractice.

How do you expect the panel chairman arriving Lagos at 10
am on Monday and not starting the election until 5pm in the
evening. You can judge by some of the pronoun cements
made by Bode George, Ogunlewe and a host of others.
One of the reasons why this party has failed is because it is
being led by the likes of Bode George and Ogunlewe.”

The former Minister of State for Defence, who vowed not to
rest until justice is served said “We submitted ourselves to a
process that we felt will be free and fair but unfortunately,
they decided to play religious politics, manipulation of
electoral process particularly on Election Day.

This to me is unacceptable, we will contest it in every sense
of it and until the needed necessary corrections are made,
we will not rest.”
