Mcleo007: People make blanket statements like that without considering individual circumstances or how those circumstances align with the realities of living and working in the UK. Unless you are a dependent (even some still do) or you have your ILR, its near impossible to just look at the care role from the spectrum of a side hustle. Many people go into care work because it offers the flexibility they need to balance their jobs with family responsibilities. Beyond that, it’s one of the few industries that reliably provides a pathway to remain in the country. Most well‑paid roles don’t offer visa sponsorship, even some positions within the NHS prefer to hire people who already have settled status. A lot of Nigerians have varying skillsets, but the many factors in the country are limiting. It is what it is!!! Most well paid roles don't offer sponsorship? Really? Don't you think it's the other way round? |

Ensol: As of April 17th, Zedcrest was still giving bullish runs not until May 18th. Good you have a stop loss amount because the market as it is will bleed for a long time. It’s better to see the loss in a portfolio managed by yourself. Why do you say the market will bleed for a long time? For someone looking to buy some equity fund, when is best to go in? |
Investment › Re: Equity Investment. by mizGene(f): 10:54am On Jun 04 |
CSblackpink: 50% foreign stocks, 40% large-cap stocks, and the remaining 10% to equity fund managers. Moreover, you have to really keep an eye on the foreign stocks portfolio. I do top up twice a week, and as of now, I am getting more than the daily percentage, and if it goes south, I will also burn as well. (Market returns +1%, I will make +$105-+$106) Noted, thank you! |

CSblackpink: If you're based overseas, your best bet is usually sticking to foreign ETFs and solid Nigerian large-cap stocks rather than going with Zedcrest or Paramount. For beginners, using a 50/40/10 split is a great way to keep risks low while you learn the ropes. So far, my foreign investments have done exceptionally well, bringing in much larger gains than my investments back home. Thank you sir. That split is across what products? My base is flexible so I'm looking at investing in both places. I've read up quite a bit of the thread and some some research on my own but I'm particularly clueless about the UK side of things still. |

Investment › Re: How To Know If A Nigerian Stock Is Overvalued Or Undervalued by mizGene(f): 2:02pm On May 06 |
NegoProfits1: A lot of us on this forum watch stock prices every day. GTCO up, Zenith down, MTNN holding. But how many of us actually stop to ask — is this price fair? Am I buying something cheap or paying too much?
That question is what separates investors from gamblers. Let me break it down simply.
---
1. PRICE-TO-EARNINGS (P/E) RATIO
This tells you how much the market is charging for every ₦1 the company earns. If a stock has a P/E of 25 but every other bank on NGX is sitting at 5-8, somebody is paying a serious premium. That premium needs a reason. If you can't find one, be careful.
Low P/E relative to peers = possibly undervalued High P/E relative to peers = possibly overvalued (or high growth expectations)
---
2. PRICE-TO-BOOK (P/B) RATIO
This compares the stock price to the actual net worth of the company. If P/B is below 1, the market is valuing the company at less than what it owns on paper. That can be an opportunity — or a red flag depending on why.
For Nigerian banks especially, P/B is a key metric to watch.
---
3. DIVIDEND YIELD
If a stock's dividend yield looks unusually high compared to its sector, it usually means one of two things — either the price has dropped significantly (potential undervaluation) or the dividend is not sustainable. Always check which one.
A stock like Zenith or GTCO paying 10%+ yield at current prices is worth investigating before jumping in.
---
4. 52-WEEK PRICE RANGE
Where is the stock sitting relative to its yearly high and low? A stock near its 52-week low isn't automatically cheap. But combined with strong fundamentals and decent earnings, it could mean the market has overreacted.
---
5. COMPARE WITHIN THE SECTOR
Don't compare Dangote Cement to a fintech. Compare it to other construction and industrial stocks. Valuation only makes sense in context. A stock is not cheap or expensive on its own — only relative to its peers.
---
THE HONEST TRUTH
No single number gives you the full answer. P/E alone has fooled many smart people. But when you stack P/E + P/B + dividend yield + price position and they all point in the same direction, that is a real signal worth acting on.
The price tells you what people are paying. The fundamentals tell you what the company is actually worth. Your job as an investor is to spot the gap between the two.

Would love to hear what metrics Nairaland investors rely on most. Drop your thoughts below. Thanks for the breakdown, is there an app that can check or calculate all these? |

advanceDNA: ive seen pple apply for ILR with their kids when their spouse isnt ready….. even divorcees, the good thing is it’s the main applicant thats ready so her kids can fly with her..
The dependent husband will just use FLR extention to complete his own 5years since his dependant status won’t work with the ILR status of the spouse
So what if the man leaves the uk and doesnt return.. are u saying the woman and her kids will just be in limbo?? Divorcees are fine to apply with their kids, if they have sole custody. What you are saying now regarding married couples living mostly apart is different from what I know, unless something has changed (which will be good as it made no sense to me either) By the way I'm specifically referring to the kids. The woman can apply whether married or divorced. |

adedapodvirus001: Good evening my people, please is there anyone here who has applied for the renewal/extension their health care visa recently( i.e after the introduction of going rates and salary threshold)
How did you navigate the going rates & salary threshold issue considering the fact that most care employers pay minimum wages and the standard working hours is 33 hours.
Here is my own issue, I got my first COS when minimum wages was 10 pounds and on 33 hours contract. Now my renewal is coming up and the issue of this salary threshold is giving me serious concerns because my employer still pay minimum wages on 33 hours contract. The HR department seem to have no clue about immigration rules changes as well.
Please help a brother. Your employer should be increasing your pay in line with the national minimum wage increase, if they are still paying you £10/hr, they could get in trouble. I think the new rules don't affect people already on the pathway, but I'll let more knowledgeable ppl confirm this. @zahra pls can you help? |

brine: Yes, I paid an extra £500 for priority processing, which usually takes less than 2 weeks for a straightforward application.
That's a smart move! Whoever you are using as your authorising officer needs to be fully aware of the entire process. Your authorising officer is the person they will contact by email or phone if needed. For some applications that aren’t straightforward, they may schedule a zoom call with you and the authorising officer, or even visit your business premises.
Which ever works best for you Thank you for not gatekeeping! @gabiomoesu if you could, pls ask your questions here so we can learn as well. |

Dear all,
I'm trying to help my aunt prep for application, Your answers and any input will be really appreciated please.
My aunt works for our family business since 2022. Her salary is currently 320k per month . Now she wants to visit to the UK later in the year with some other family members who have visas already. Her brothers are happy to pay her flight ticket, no issues there. She is mid 40s, isn't married and has no child, so no real family ties. She will stay in my house so I'm going to be taking care of accommodation and feeding.
She has been denied twice dec 2020 and Jan 2021 due to the fact she we said she was unemployed in the 1st app (family was sponsoring 100%), and we tried to change to self employed in the 2nd app. (she was in fact self employed informally, as in not cac registered and her income was irregular hence our reason)
I'm wondering what to advise on her application now, .... I'm thinking it may be better to have her sponsor herself or at least sponsor her flight at the minimum. Obviously, as it's a family business, we can decide to increase her salary so that she can have a healthy balance for her application..
My questions are:
1. [s]For how long should her bank statement be[/s]? Edit I have seen that 2 to 3 months is fine 2. What should be a reasonable salary and bank balance for self sponsorship? 3. We want to put a 3wk visit, hope that is fine? 4. How much is OK to indicate she will spend on flight ticket? I don't think it should be too high compared to her salary but not so low that it will be impossible. 5. How early before her trip can she apply? 6. Her only strong tie so far is her job, any advice on how to make a strong case for return Nija for her?
Thanks for your input |

giselle237: It would be weird if you didn’t provide your documentation for his application and out of the blues, home office goes to your bank— you and him provided the information so they are checking what was provided to his application. Standard procedure. Hi, I'm just reading through various bits of this thread to update my knowledge and be able to advise a relative. I didn't know the Home Office contacts banks now... Do they contact in all cases and do you know what details they verify? I'm guessung it will be best to not carry out any transactions that will significantly change the account balance during the visa application period... |

bamituni: Thanks Akorkor and ogbenioptional
I was just curious as the only restrictions on the evisa is not being entitled to public funds.
It's just easier to work as a contractor for a physiotherapist-which is practically the same as being self employed. Nurses have it easier in this respect...loads of partime jobs. I believe doctors are able to register their own business under this visa, this is the main reason why I said earlier that I think the rule allows it. @jedisco may be able to help with more info. I've taken a look at my own visa terms and I see nothing about running one's own business. So there is room for varied interpretation there. |

dentalux: That is not the standard. They said the role met all requirements but not the labour market . The salary is well over the threshold and listed on that list. It is a role you have to get into with a qualification. So it is not one those generic roles. If it was dwp, the story will not be the same. I see what you mean now. People should still be trying professional jobs though. At interview the issue of COS should be addressed since it is key and not left for later. At least that way, one can make an informed decision. |

dentalux: Today, I just want to share with you what happens in the UK job market. People here should stop blaming people who decide to go for care visa without trying professional jobs.. The truth is the spirit of labour market test is still in place. My flatmate mate got a job within the civil service and resumed. When it came to the issue of sponsorship the Labour market test was applied on him. He was told he could not be sponsored and that the role is not a hard to fill role and could be sourced from the UK labour market. He showed me the letter which i read.. This is just to tell someone looking for sponsorship. Pray for direction what works for A may not work for B. even if the company has a license. . Isn't this the standard? Not all roles can be sponsored. |

uzo2512: Could someone please help with Clarification on expired Passport Submission and Return - The Nigeria High commission London
Could someone help me please confirm whether I need to submit my expired passport and leave it with the High Commission until I receive my new passport, or if it will be returned to me along with the supporting documents?
I am asking because I have an emergency trip to Nigeria in about two weeks, and I understand that I may be able to travel with my expired passport. I would like to know if the High Commission will return my old passport after the biometric appointment, or if they will keep it. Since there is no guarantee that my new passport will arrive before my travel date, I would like to ensure that I can still travel to Nigeria with the old passport while waiting for the new one. Or do I have to cancel the appointment and rebook when I come back?
Thank you for your assistance. I don't know the answer to your question but you can indeed travel with an expired passport INTO Nigeria but must renew before leaving. Evidence of renewal should suffice too. |

jedisco: When searching I believe I came across a S&S LISA option from Moneybox only that you can't switch if you already have a cash ISA with them. I also did not think the options in their S&S LISA were quite robust as I wanted a global low cost fvnd. Their fees were relatively high too. Money-saving-expert has a page on LISAs
Another thing to note especially if you're saving more than 4k per year i.e above LISA treshold is that regular cash or S&S ISAs have flexible offerings meaning you can withdraw money and pay it back in same year without it affecting your allowance. Foe example, say you have 30k contributed across tax years in a Cash ISA, you can withdraw that money for a home purchase (or any reason), afterwards could still put back 30k in that same tax year (and retain its tax free status) if your provider is flexible. This is not possible with LISAs - you'd have to wait for the next tax year to start afresh Ok. Thank you. That must have been why I don't see the option. I know about the cash and S&S and using that asides my LISA as well. |

Its maxed out for the financial year and invested for under 8 months in the named fvnd. Returns so far (aside government rebate) is over 9%. Are there options for choosing what your LISA is invested in? I thought it was just cash by default. |
