Politics / US Puts $7m Bounty On B’haram Leader, Shekau by mj(m): 8:57am On Jun 04, 2013

The United States has made good its promise to help Nigeria end terrorism by offering a $7m (N1.1bn) reward to persons with information on the whereabouts of the leader of militant islamist sect, Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau.

The $7m is part of the $23m posted on Monday by the US State Department’s Rewards for Justice programme in rewards to help track down four other leaders of militant groups such as Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb spreading terror in West Africa.

Up to $5m was posted for Al-Qaeda veteran Mokhtar Belmokhtar, the one-eyed Islamist behind the devastating attack on an Algerian gas plant in January in which 37 persons, including three Americans, were killed.

A further $5m was offered for top AQIM leader Yahya Al-Hammam, reportedly involved in the 2010 murder of an elderly French hostage in Niger Republic.

Malik Abdelkarim, a senior fighter with AQIM, and Oumar Ould Hamaha, the spokesman for Mali’s Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, were also targeted by the rewards which will give up to $3m each for information leading to their arrests.

The bounties which the Federal Government described as a welcome development, acknowledged the growing links between AQIM and Nigeria’s Boko Haram, which is under pressure from a military offensive.

A senior US State Department official, who made this known to the Agence France Presse on Monday said, “They’ve had a relationship for some time. They send people back and forth for training, they’ve done the provision of arms back and forth.

“The links are… not quite as solid as some of the other terrorist organisations,” he said. “Nonetheless, it’s a dangerous link and it’s something that we feel we should try and stop.”

Shekau had last week called on Islamists in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq to join the bloody fight to create an Islamic state in Nigeria.

In a video obtained by AFP last week, he claimed Boko Haram forces had made significant gains against the Nigerian Army while sustaining little damage since the start of the military offensive on May 15.

“Under his leadership, Boko Haram’s capability has certainly grown,” the official, who asked not to be named added.

He highlighted how the group set off “their first improvised explosive device in early June 2011. By August (2011) they used a car bomb against the United Nations facility,” an attack which killed 25 people.

“When we see someone like this who… is actually leading to an increase in the capability of an organisation, that’s something that we would naturally try to see if we can do something to impede,” he added.

Shekau’s whereabouts could not be determined in the video, in which he was shown seated and dressed in camouflage and a turban, with an AK-47 at his side.

His comments contradicted statements from the military, which claimed major successes during the offensive, including the destruction of Boko Haram camps and dozens of arrests.

Shekau was placed on a US blacklist last year, but Boko Haram has yet to be designated a foreign terrorist organisation – an absence which has raised eyebrows among regional experts.

The US department official also told the AFP that the “AQIM has been increasingly active in the North and West Africa. They’re one of the pre-eminent kidnap for ransom groups in the terrorist world now.”

“They cause us a great deal of concern. Anything that we can do naturally to cut down on the capabilities of AQIM, anything that we can do to get information on these people so that we can get them in front of a court… That is our goal,” he added.

The US has been increasingly worried about the spread of Islamist groups in Mali and across the vast and lawless Sahel since a military coup ousted the government in Bamako.

Former colonial power France had led a military offensive in January against the militants in Mali’s northern desert. The West African nation prepares for presidential elections on July 28.

There are fears however that the spread of militant groups risks destabilising the entire West African region.

Belmokhtar, who was a senior commander for AQIM, broke away from the group last year to set up his own group dubbed the “Signatories in Blood.”

Branded “the Uncatchable,” Belmokhtar also personally supervised the operational plans for the twin car bombings in Niger that killed at least 20 people late last month, according to a spokesman for his group.

In Abuja, the Federal Government through the presidential spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, said the $7m bounty on Shekau was a positive development.

“We welcome any effort by the international community to support Nigeria’s effort at waging war against terrorism and its perpetrators. What this proves is that terrorism is a global phenomenon that requires global effort at combating it. Nigeria believes that the international community needs to come together to combat terrorism, “ Abati told journalists.

Politics / Mimiko, Nwayanwu fault video clips on NGF election by mj(m): 7:37am On May 30, 2013
Ondo State Governor, who is also a factional Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, and the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Chief Dan Nwayanwu, on Wednesday faulted video clips allegedly recorded during the NGF election held last Friday in Abuja.

The duo spoke at the democracy lecture delivered by the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute for International Affairs, Prof. Bola Akinterinwa, in Akure.

Mimiko, who described the release of the 10-minute video clips as the height of propaganda by the pro-Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s camp, challenged the originators to release the three-hour recording of the entire process.

He argued that the purported recorded clips released to an online medium on Tuesday merely covered an aspect, which represented the mischievous intention of the pro-Amaechi group.

Mimiko said, “Nigerians should ask the pro-Amaechi’s group why he presided over an election, which he is also contesting. I specifically raised that issue and insisted that he must resign but his supporters maintained that he should supervise the poll as a sitting chairman.

“They asked me whether I resigned my position while seeking a re-election for a second term in office and I replied them that it was not the same thing, because the NGF is like an association; not a democratic institution which had its existence entrenched in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“When it was obvious that we could not guarantee the source of the ballot boxes and ballot papers brought by Amaechi, I protested again that we should conduct the election openly by raising up our hands in support of our preferred candidate, again, they rejected.

“The ballot papers they produced were without serial numbers, and we discovered this was a fraud; hence there were protests.

“They never captured all these facts but merely recorded the fraction of the process, which was in line with their pre-determined agenda. I challenge them to release the clips which will cover the entire three-exercise.”

Nwayanwu, who also described the purported emergence of Ameachi as the factional chairman of the NGF as a fraud, said he ought to have given up the claim to NGF chairman when it was obvious that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, had pitched its tent with Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau state.

He also said since election had never been held to produce the NGF Chairman, the emergence of Amaechi could not have been in comformity with the regulations setting up the organisation.

The LP chairman said the fact that 18 out of the 35 governors that voted attended the meeting called by Jang as NGF head, cast moral burden on the 19 votes Amaechi purported to have got in the election held a day earlier.

Nwayanwu said since the days of Governor Adamu Abdullahi of Nasarawa State to Dr. Bukola Saraki of Kwara state, election had never been held for the chairmanship position of NGF. He, therefore, wondered where Amaechi got his legitimacy from.

He said, “Amaechi should not allow overzealous and anxious politicians to destroy his future. He is still young, about 48 years old now. He should go back and reconcile with his party.

“A party is always supreme. If he cannot abide by the philosophy of the PDP, he is free to leave. He can join the APC or come to LP; but in our party, the party is always supreme.”

I agree with you seo really takes time and effort, with a good seo campaign businesses sales will increase massively, i charged about 50k monthly for seo, my results speaks for me, despite the huge amount of money Jumia spends on paid search I was able to knock them off from some high keywords through organic search, they rank behind me now, but it takes time that's the truth. Nigerians don't really value SEO, the prefer spending money on paid ads on facebook, Google, yahoo, Nairaland, LindaIkeji the result is that as soon as the stop paying for the ads the traffic to their website will massively reduce, think about what will happen to konga if they stop paying for ads..think very well, you will get the answer.#Shikena
Phones / If You Can’t Afford Blackberry Q10, A Cheaper Version Is Here! by mj(m): 12:20pm On May 27, 2013
Since Blackberry released the Z10 and Q10 earlier in the year, most Nigerian fans of Blackberry have only had the chance to admire the phones on their PC screens, with friends who are big boys or girls, and in phone stores during window-shopping sessions.

Yes, both phones are great. But they cost far more than what most Nigerians — even Blackberry fans — can afford. (Of course, your love for a brand shouldn’t prompt you to break the bank just to get the latest phone.)

If you’re one of those who really love the Blackberry 10 OS, but have been unable to experience it (because of the huge costs of the Z10 and Q10), here’s good news: The new Blackberry Q5 is coming soon!

The Blackberry Q5 is the third Blackberry device to run on the new Blackberry 10 OS (following Z10 and Q10). According to Blackberry CEO, Thorsten Heins, the phone is targeted at users who are on a tight budget. So, it’s expected that the phone would cost considerably cheaper than the Z10 and Q10.
Now, let’s discuss the phone’s features.
Design

Like the Q10, the Q5 has a QWERTY keyboard. But it really comes across as a low budget phone, considering the plastic casing, which feels less refined. The Q5 is 10.8mm thick, and it weighs 120g. So, it’s really very slim and light. The QWERTY keyboard looks free in its casing.
Screen

The Blackberry Q5 features a 3.1″ screen that has the same 720 x 720 pixel resolution that the Q10 has. (This is very impressive for a presumably cheap phone).

There’d be less pressure on the Q5 battery because the screen is an LCD rather than Super AMOLED. This screen is responsive to touch, has very bright colors, and a fantastic contrast ratio. However, the viewing angle and sharpness aren’t up to those of the Q10.
Performance

The Blackberry Q5 runs slightly slower than the Q10. Application launches and menu changes take less than a second longer, but the difference is very small — negligible, in fact.

The Q5 runs on Blackberry 10 but you can easily upgrade to the new Blackberry 10.1, which adds some new keyboard options and some other added features.

As for the battery, well, you may be disappointed to know this: The battery is not removable! So, if you like to carry a spare battery around, this may be a big problem.
Camera

The Blackberry Q5 features a rear-mounted, 5MP camera and a front-facing, 2MP camera. Both cameras are superb and produce crisp images.
Release date

Although the Blackberry Q5 has been announced over a week ago, the phone won’t storm the market until July 2013. So, if you’re falling in love with the device already, you’ll have to wait for two months or less.
Blackberry Q5: Specifications in brief

Dimensions: 120 x 66 10.8mm
Networks: 2G, 3G, 4G
Display: LCD capacitative touchscreen (720 x 720)
OS: Blackberry 10
CPU: Dual core 1.2 GHz
Camera: 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera
Connectivity: Bluetooth, NFC, Wi-Fi, USB
Sensors: Accelerometer, proximity, compass
Battery: Non-removable 2180 mAh

Once the phone hits the market, it will be featured on the Parktel Online store. Keep your fingers crossed.
