Phones / Apple Just Made A Bunch Of Awesome Apps Free by mj(m): 9:09pm On Jul 08, 2013

If you’re looking for some new apps for your iPhone or iPad, today is your lucky day.

The Verge’s Sam Byford found that Apple has made some of the best options on the iPhone and iPad free today, seemingly in celebration of the App Store opening five years ago this week.

Here are the ones we think are worth grabbing:

Infinity Blade II: Released back in December of 2011, Infinity Blade II is still one of the prettiest games available for the iPhone and iPad. It’s an action RPG that lets you battle monsters in a medieval castle.

Over: If adding filters to your photos before uploading them to your social networks has gotten old, Over might be a fun alternative. It lets you overlay text and images on top of your photos, which sounds boring until you see all of the typographic options the app gives you.

Traktor DJ: If you have an iPad and interested in making or remixing music at all, you should give Traktor DJ a try now that it’s free. The app gives you access to your entire iTunes library and lets you remix your songs in almost any way you can think of. It even gives you recommendations of songs in your library that would fit well with the edits you’re doing if you want to mix songs together.

Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery EP: Don’t let the simple graphics fool you. Superbrothers is one of the best indie games available on any platform. The music composed for the game alone is worth the normal price of admission. For free, it’s a steal.

No doubt you have been asking about what ranks best for search engine optimization between subdomains and subfolders on your root domain. Both methods can have value for SEO purposes. However, in my experience, the vast majority of marketing and web practitioners have an incomplete or inaccurate understanding of when and how to use them.

Let’s take a moment to look at this topic in more detail.

Jobs/Vacancies / Salary Requirements: What To Say by mj(m): 8:09pm On Jun 28, 2013

Providing salary requirements is a troubling part of the interview process for many job seekers. They don't want to:

A) Price themselves out of the job.

B) Come in too low and leave money on the table.

The solution? Offer a range.

First, Have a 'Walk-Away' Rate

Everyone needs to have a clear number in their mind. That number is the lowest possible amount you'd take to do the job. By that I mean, you'd accept and not be looking for a higher paying job, or have to take another part-time job to cover the bills. Your walk-away rate is what you need to live and be able to do the job without resentment. This varies for everyone.

Second, Have an 'Ideal' Rate

This is what you'd love to earn. It's what you think you are worth and want to make for the services you'll be providing. It should be based on salary research to ensure you aren't pricing yourself out of the market (you can do that at Salary.com, Payscale.com, and Glassdoor.com to name a few).

Next, Present the Range & Explain the Variation

Share with the employer you are looking to make between __ and __. Now, this range will be pretty wide, so you should immediately follow-up with something like this: "The reason the range is so broad is, for me, no two jobs are the same. Money isn't my only criteria for work. The benefits and opportunities for growing my skills are equally important in my mind. So, I'm willing to be flexible in my salary, depending upon the position."

Can't Give a Range? Be Conservative

If you can't give a range and have to provide a single salary, choose the middle of your range, maybe even a little bit lower. You'd rather be lower than their target rate than over it.

Afraid They'll Low-Ball You? Of Course They Will!

The most common question I get when I share the strategy above is,

"But J.T., won't they automatically assume they can give me the walk-away rate?"

No doubt, some companies will low-ball you. But remember, you don't have to accept it. Unless they were adamant that this was not negotiable, you could ask for more money.

Yes, You Can Negotiate. Here's Why...

If you knock the interview process out of the park and eventually get selected as their first choice for the job, you will be at a competitive advantage. They went through all the time and trouble to screen and interview other candidates. Hiring is at time-consuming and expensive process. The idea of not getting their first pick for the job because of pay is not what they want. They don't want to have to go back to the hiring process again - they want you!

Now, that doesn't mean you can ask for a 50% pay increase, but it should give you the confidence to speak up and ask for more if you need it.

This is What You Would Say:

"Thank you for choosing me for this role. I am very excited about joining your team. That being said, this is really hard for me, but I wanted to call you personally and share a challenge. While I could accept the job at this rate, it's on the low side of my income needs. I was really hoping for ____. This higher rate would ensure I could do this job without any concerns of covering my expenses. Additionally, if you could compensate me at that level I would make 100% certain that you felt you were getting every penny's worth. Would that be possible?"

Now, they may not say "yes," but at least they know you are looking to make more. You may even be able to negotiate for some other perks in exchange of the pay increase, like working from home one day/week to save money on your commute, or more vacation time. If you don't ask, you'll never know.

Three Examples of Success:

One professional got a $5,000 increase in base pay. The HR manager was so impressed with her confidence in asking for more money, she said, "It's good to see you know what you are worth."
One client didn't get a pay increase, but did get permission to bring her dog to the office.
Another convinced them to agree to a 6-month review to discuss a raise instead of waiting for a full year.
Don't let salary discussions intimidate you. Identify your range, wow them in the interview, and then politely ask for more if you need to. You are a business-of-one. Building your skills in salary negotiation are vital to your professional success.

Programming / Re: Certification Or Skill by mj(m): 1:43pm On Jun 27, 2013
naija_swag: This is more or less a pointless question. Certification and skill are both important. If you can prove to the world that you have got skills and come up with tangible results, no one is interested in your certifications. The wizkids in IT history and today have their achievements regardless of whether they are certified or not. Now that does not stop them from getting certified if they desire so. If you then want to show that you are knowledgeable in a certain IT area and comply with necessary bench marks and standards for knowledge level therein, you get certified. So both are mutually exclusive. If you have got skills, getting certified does not prove it,it is proved by real world projects that you execute and likewise, getting certified does not guarantee that you have got the necessary skills, you could be knowledgeable enough to pass the exams only. So get the certification, enhance your skills and be a complete Information Technology expert. Don't neglect any, they are both equally important.
We are thinking in the same direction, in fact am preparing for MCSD, then I head to PMP. I still got my portfolio of applications.

Phones / Ativ Q - Samsung Win8 & Android Jelly-Bean Tablet by mj(m): 9:08pm On Jun 20, 2013

Electronics giant Samsung unveiled the ATIV Q today, a new tablet that runs two different operating systems simultaneously, Windows 8 and Android version 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) operating systems.

The ATIV Q offers nine hours of battery life on a full charge, which isn’t bad considering the processor and high-definition display. There’s also the dual-booting to worry about, which comes with some new software called SideSync to share various data between the two separate operating systems.

Samsung is also playing up the Ativ Q’s ability to run Android applications. According to Samsung, the Ativ Q will allow users to “experience both Windows 8 and Android (Jellybean 4.2.2) on the same device.” Android apps can be pinned to the Windows 8 start screen and run directly from there. The Ativ Q lets users get Android apps directly from the Google Play store and also potentially by copying them from Windows. Samsung says that the device can transfer files and folders between Windows 8 and Android (which we assume will be running virtualized).

The Ativ Q is the larger device, powered by a new Intel Haswell Core i5 CPU (with Intel’s HD Graphics 4400 integrated GPU). It has 4GB of DDR3 RAM and comes with a 128GB SSD. Samsung promises battery life of up to nine hours with the Ativ Q.

Programming / Coding Is Coming To Every Industry You Can Think Of, Time To Start Learning It N by mj(m): 7:08am On Jun 13, 2013

Not every coder job involves working in a blue chip tech company or Silicon Valley startup.

As British technologist, Conrad Wolfram said in a TED talk on teaching math with computers: “In the real world math isn’t necessarily done by mathematicians. It’s done by geologists, engineers, biologists, all sorts of different people.”

The same applies for computer science. Just ask Alex Tran, fellowship program manager at Code for America, a nonprofit “civic startup accelerator” that sees coding as a new form of public service. Each year, he works with more than 20 startups and fellows who build a variety of apps and online programs to improve how citizens engage and interact with their communities. So far, they’ve built tools for services like community disaster management, food stamps, virtual townhalls, student data interoperability, and even snazzy icons.
“Coding literacy is a huge part of our future as a country, and it will be integrated into every aspect of our government and every other sector that people will work in,” says Tran. “In the future, there will only be more opportunities for young people to go into careers where technical and public sectors intersect.”
Computer science is transforming industries--and igniting a renaissance in the creating of things. Just as in the 1950s, when writing and communications skills became the essence of the paradigmatic "white collar" job, increasingly every artisan, manufacturer, and entrepreneur who makes something will need to code.

Mitchel Resnick, director of the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, calls coding “an extension of writing.” Mashable describes it as “21st century literacy.” Just as we write words to map and make sense of ideas, we code to organize and present data in meaningful ways. We write to tell our stories through essays and articles; so, too, do websites and apps offer their own narratives about the world. Like writing, coding can help channel our creativity and solve problems. (And both “good” writing and coding ought to be elegant, clear, and concise.)

At a deeper level, the push to introduce coding to younger students reflects a larger, back-to-the-future movement to return creativity, tinkering, and exploration to the learning process. There’s been a revival of Makerspaces and other garage workshops that use hands-on activities to turn abstract principles into tangible objects. After all, one can read about trigonometry in a textbook--or go create a cell phone case from a 3-D printer.

Politics / Re: Aljazeera Sent Packing From Nigeria? by mj(m): 9:37pm On Jun 08, 2013

I spent nearly two weeks in Maiduguri, reporting on the Nigerian army's offensive against Boko Haram. The group has been behind many bombings and thousands of deaths in Nigeria, and Maiduguri has been its base. The group says it wants a strict form of Islamic law imposed across Nigeria.

During my time in Maiduguri I reported on public opinion on the fighting. On women and children kidnapped by Boko Haram and liberated by Nigerian forces, and the number civilian casualties. One soldier gave a powerful eyewitness account of how he saw many civilians killed.

Even though I was able to get these three reports out, I come away from the fighting against Boko Haram feeling like it's a silent war. During our time in Maiduguri we faced restrictions on where we could go.

We faced restrictions on who we could talk to. We faced restrictions on what we could film. And we were not permitted to go to the frontline.

State of emergency

Humanitarian organisations and the media still remain restricted from going to areas where fighting between the Nigerian military and Boko Haram has been taking place - nearly three weeks since the fighting started.

As if that were not bad enough, mobile phone networks have been cut off by the authorities since the fighting started on May 15. It has meant that millions of people in the region have not been able to communicate what they're seeing and experiencing of the war, or the impact of the state of emergency that was declared by President Goodluck Jonathan, which gave a green light for the fighting to start.

Millions of people have not been able to reach family and friends in the region. Millions of people have not been able to conduct business. Millions of people have not been able to raise the alarm, or call for help, in any kinds of circumstances.

That's why I call the Nigerian army’s offensive against Boko Haram the silent war.

It's not clear how long it will go on for. There have been unconfirmed reports saying the state of emergency and war against Boko Haram could last for three to six months. However, the Nigerian military has been providing daily updates of their successes fighting the group, so it may be far shorter.

The question is; what will the impact of this silent war be on the millions of people living in the northeast? Will it rid the region of Boko Haram? That’s the hope and the prayer of every Nigerian. Or will Boko Haram somehow find a way of re-grouping, and re-emerging at some date in the future? Only time will tell.
