Business › Re: How Profitable Is Cassava Processing And Exportation Business In Nigeria? by Mmkgroup5(f): 8:11am On Apr 01, 2018 |
If it takes 5to6 to recover your capital how is it lucrative.the machines for garri is not up to 5m what are you taking about ?? LagBlogger: This article is tailored for persons or Organisations looking to invest in Agro processing business in Nigeria.
The Cassava processing business in Nigeria is a very lucrative and versatile venture to do in Nigeria but it is also one of the most untapped opportunities many Nigerians are not looking at maybe because it’s too common to be viewed locally as a goldmine.
The cassava crop can yield up to 15 different products when processed and each of these products has relatively large markets. In Brazil for instance Cassava is processed into ethanol which can be used for powering automobile vehicles whereas China purchases Cassava pellets from Nigeria for use in producing industrial Caramel, glucose and High quality cassava flour for the food processing industry.
Cassava flour is a good substitute for wheat flour and it alone generated over N25 billion from 125,000 tons to the Nigerian economy in 2014 mostly serving the domestic food market whereas Nigeria imported over N635 billion worth of wheat flour in 2014 from the USA we lose at least $2 billion per annum in foreign exchange (FAO, 2014) to our local preference for wheat flour over cassava flour. Even the N25 billion realized from Cassava flour processing in 2014 is a far cry from the over $28 million that Costa Rica which produces far less Cassava as Nigeria generated in the same year from exports to Europe and India. So the Cassava processing industry can offer Nigeria a lot of income and wealth if well harnessed in addition, one large scale cassava processing mill can employ over 280 people and if Nigeria has at least 1,000 mills we are talking of creating at least over 280,000 jobs.
What is the Market size of Cassava Processing and exportation opportunities in Nigeria? From the 35 million tons of cassava we produce we can process 20 million tons into various products such as 2 million tons of animal feeds which can potentially generate N160 billion, 3 million tons of industrial starch which can generate N150 billion and 4 million tons of ethanol which can generate over N320 billion that’s over N620 billion per annum from 3 products only, the drawback is that garri could become more expensive for the local market. From exportation Nigeria can generate $400 per ton from 50,000 tons of cassava pellets exported to China which is $20 million per annum.
Who are the likely customers for Processed Cassava products and where can they be found? Locally our cottage industries could purchase products derived from cassava. For instance, manufacturers of perfumes and insecticides, pharmaceutical companies, breweries, Noodles and Pasta companies, poultry and livestock farms among others, internationally trading companies that supply overseas food processing companies would order for Cassava Pellets.
Where is the money in Cassava Processing? Is it the domestic market or the exports market? The domestic market is far more lucrative than the exports market except if you want to specialize in processing cassava pellets then there is a good market for it in China however most products that can be derived from cassava processing are more profitable for the local market, Garri alone has a huge local market that can guarantee year round sales and industrial starch also has a huge market.
What is the Future of Cassava Processing in Nigeria?
Production of Industrial starch is expected to continue increasing due to increased local demand from factories and rising cost of importation Bakery industry will continue to demand for HQCF as the alternative is becoming too expensive for them to purchase
The cost of purchasing animal feeds is ever on the rise thus cassava processing can offer cheaper alternatives to existing animal feeds sources
Nigeria’ population is increasing by over 3% per annum which means there will be a large market for Garri, starch and other cassava products
List of Products that can be derived from Cassava Processing
High quality Cassava Flour which can be used in baking bread, cakes etc
Industrial Starch – is used in production of custards, salad dressing, food additives, making noodles and pasta and also as food thickeners and stabilizers.
Industrial Caramel – which can serve as colouring to drinks and used in flavoring popcorn among other edibles
Ethanol and bio fuel – Cassava can be processed to produce ethanol and other bio fuels which can be used in powering automobile machines and some industrial machines. Ethanol is also used in producing perfumes, spirits, drugs, insecticides and varnishes
Garri – is a popular staple in Nigeria consumed by more than 80 million people on a daily basis
Glucose syrup – it can also be processed into sweeteners like glucose syrup which is an alternative for sugar and saccharine. Large manufacturers like beverage and food processing companies need glucose as sweeteners and additives to their products Animal feeds – cassava can be processed into livestock feeds for pigs, goats and poultry animals and the local market for this product is over N800 billion as of 2016
Canned Juice and Jams cassava can be processed into juice and can be combined with other ingredients to make jam
When I start what are the likely Challenges and Threats I’ll have to deal with?
Cheap and/or preferred Substitutes in high demand: Many of the cassava derivatives have cheaper or more preferred substitutes which the local market is attracted to. For instance Wheat flour and is still largely preferred to cassava flour and cassava starch is not the number one source of stabilizers and thickeners in food processing industry
Processing Challenges: The processing of cassava into its derivatives requires appropriate technology and techniques and both are in very short supply as the locally fabricated machines are at best average and some of the processing techniques are labour intensive. An optimum processing facility that can produce quality cassava products is also very expensive to acquire.
Marketing Challenges: Locating buyers especially if you’re into exportation is not easy, first many international buyers prefer to buy from Costa Rica and Brazil because of superior processing and storage of cassava roots. Secondly, the price of cassava per ton is relatively low compared to other cash crops and doesn’t encourage large scale cultivation
Finance and Credit facilities: Cassava processing needs adequate funding to grow and only the bank of agriculture and bank of industry are disposed towards this industry and both have limited funds available.
What is the return on investment, payback period and expected first year sales? An investment of N28 million can yield N6 million plus in net profit after tax from Garri and Flour processing alone. This means you can recoup your investment in 4.5 to 5 years based on projected first year sales of N164 million and 15% average year on year sales within same period.

Make una they throw bomb for each other haha eminikansoso:
OP You are a confirmed Internet farmer. You know nothing about farming just look at your analysis, for example #88,000 for palm oil for garri processing. Now Let me educate you on cassava farming business. Let assume you want to farm on an hectare of land which is 100m by 100m equal to 10,000m square. Land clearing during the january /February period will cost you 15000 to 25000 depend on the locations. Next stage is Tilling and Ridges by tractor or manual, but tractor will be much better and will cost you around 20,000 to 30,000 depend on your locations. Other stages include herbicide spraying and planting of cassava, you will need like 4 litres of herbicides and 50 bundles of cassava stems for 1 hectare of cassava farm which will cause you around 75,000 for proper planting of 1 meter spacing. It take cause 9 to 12 months to reach maturity stage and it depends on the species. Harvesting is done by hand and like me I sell by ton no further processing because of time and stress involve. For an hectare of cassava farm highest I have uproot is about 63 tons about 2 years ago and was sold at 22500 per ton then. Thanks cassava farming is very lucrative no magic about it but it take time. |

Wise talk. Him no one hang him coat according to him seize stagger: A very enlightening story, but not strange for those of us who have done some business with government. The truth is this: you can never put critical aspects of your business in the hands of government or those claiming to represent govt.
I have had people bring proposals to me worth hundreds of millions of naira. For that particular business, the YouWIN grant gave me massive capacity to the point where I now deal with foreign clients. So I have Nigerians bringing proposals, hoping to leverage on my capacity. They tell me things like "the Minister is interested in this.." or "I have a link to the Presidency..." to "this job is for the government of so so and so state. In fact, we just met the governor the other day..." and all the blah blah blah blah blah.
When they come with this big talk, I laugh. I have been doing business since I was a teenager in the 80s. I can tell you I have seen a lot of things. People come with all sorts of big talk, big promises, big dreams. I simply laugh and put a few questions to them and puncture everything they say. Some rethink the whole job, some get annoyed, leave and then run into an endless frustrating cycle.
Back to our agriculture. You see, anyone who clearly studied OBJ's agric program which was led by Boma Anga will see that there was a lot of loopholes in the whole stuff. Noble idea, but bad implementation. No legal framework to back anything up. When it comes to cassava, you can NEVER make any money hoping to sell to processors, unless maybe like Legsupnigeria, you just have the good luck of meeting processors who can respect a commodities futures contract the way it is done abroad.
The only way to go is to buy your own processing equipment, then identify a market for your product BEFORE planting. The high perishability rate of cassava puts farmers at the mercy of processors and the processors know it. The processor can hold out for as long as possible. The farmer can not and eventually, the farmer will have to give in.
Everything in life has a plan. If you are in cassava and you are not making any plans to build your own processing factory, no matter how small, you will be in for a very long and frustrating journey. That is just the way it is.
We should also look at a number of factors. There is a lot of talk of E-10, which is supposed to be the new fuel for cars in Nigeria with 90% petrol and 10% ethanol. Do you think that project will see the light of day as long as the fuel import cabal is in place, donating billions to the ruling party? I think not. Point here: try not to depend on a govt policy. In Nigeria, policies are only as old as the governments that formulate them. We can see how difficult it has been for the composite flour policy to take off.
My 2 cents is this. Farm other crops, save money, buy your cassava processing equipment, identify a ready market for your PROCESSED CASSAVA (not raw tubers), before you actually start planting. You can sell gari, starch and flour to end users with good marketing and make your money. You do not need to put yourself in the hands of the mobile processors, companies like GIZ and all. Not worth it. |

Bro learn more u need alot to learn you totally wrong my mom was a farmer boiler is good especially for average farmers u need invest more in layers unless u are just wasting ur energy. Layers start giving u money in few years that is if you are strong enough to carry on. nenux: Hello house! I am a poultry farmer with both birds and can tell you from my experience. When it comes to comparing between the two birds (i.e Layers and Broilers), I'l advice any 1 who needs to know that Layer is d best and always d best only that a little patience would b needed from brooding to the point of lay which is about 5 months. Broilers are done seasonally but sometimes the stress involved in raising them is not worth it. Let me explain, when U bring in layers, U have to treat them like ur pets, properly vaccinate them 'cos they'l stay long time with U. Their mortality rate is very low when compared to broilers. Increase in temprature can kill a very healthy broiler and all ur suffering would just go in2 thin air. When keeping broilers, U always need 2 b around the poultry to supply their water and feed at adlib. And in addition, if not properlly sanitized, broiler generates a bad smell in the poultry house and the surroundings. Just dont compare, if u must do broilers, make it seasonal. |

I'm not a farmer about about to start I made alot of calculation and I realized boiler farming is better that layers. Is good to begin layers with a very huge amoout like obasanjo farm so you can get your money. Big layers Poultry get feeds from source for lower rate or manufacture the feeds david2nice: To be honest with you as a starter i advice you start with broiler. The risk and all the technicalities involved in rearing a layer is much higher than that of broiler.I have reared both broiler and layer before when i was still in secondary school then. I can confidently tell you that it was much easier for me sustaining and monitoring the broiler then even though i was not a professional in this business, and i earned unbelievable profits with my 110 broilers. For selling your broilers there is always a market for it if your chicks are ready. For more advice you can reach me on this line 08082363464 |

Business › Re: I Want To Start Poultry Business Broiler Or Layer Which Is The Best? by Mmkgroup5(f): 6:30pm On Mar 31, 2018 |
Bro don't look it that way layer require alot of food no gain in it erniewhez: Well for me i think the layers are better, reason being that the mortality rate is lower cos they are matured, what make them layers is the food u feed them with i.e. layers mesh. But the broilers are more sensitive to both environment, temprature and waters where there is a lapse. secondly the layers can be sold out when they are no longer productive in laying eggs. but the broilers are sold once they are matured. U wont also need much space for the layers cos they are kept in cages whearas the broilers needs large rooms depending on the numbers u are keeping. Layers are also more delicious when cooked with stronger bones than the broilers. The layers eggs are better business cos its not seasonal, u have patronage all through the year, whearas broilers are slightly seasonal. The dangers you face with layers depends on your environment, i.e. if ure located at reptiles prone area, u may have to take xtra precautions cos snakes are always after the eggs and likely danger to you and the workers. |

What is your gain. That's all matters what's is your monthly Income . strangeland: I started this in July 2017. I rented a pen house in the Epe axis of Lagos (At a "mates" rate of 50k) I purchased 3500 chicks at 17 weeks old @ N1,400 each = N4,900,000. The funny thing is I couldn’t buy them directly from the seller I had to go through an agent who charge N30 per bird = N105,000. After buying the bird I got them debecked for N14,000. Got them vaccinated and gave them antibiotics for a disease called Newcastle. Med N42,000 The birds arrived at my farm at 19 weeks and fed on 84 bags of grower weekly (That is 12 bags per day) @ N3,400 each = N285,600 Generator cost N5,000 per week ND+IB Vaccine (14/08/17) N6,800 Miscellaneous cost average N29,000 per month It is important to weigh a sample of birds every week to check on their progress in growth This is the summary of average weight: 31/07/2017 @ 19 weeks old bird weight is 1,080grams growth of 133 grams 07/08/2017 @ 20 weeks old bird weight is 1,118grams growth of 38 grams 14/08/2017 @ 21 weeks old bird weight is 1,276grams growth of 158 grams. Increase fed to 98 bags of grower weekly (That is 14 bags per day) @ N3,400 each = N333,200 |
