At Moat Academy, it is more than just being a software developer; it is becoming a software developer that stands out.
“We can take the time needed to nurture apprentice developers because we are faced with the problem of abundance, rather than scarcity.... Today we have more developers than needed, but we have a shortage of good developers.”
There is still demand for competent software developers in the industry; please don't get intimidated by the number of applications, and having mentors play a key role here to get you ready for the industry.
guysbewise: True there are jobs but too many developers chasing the same jobs. See the screenshot, over 100 applicants for one developer role.
@DevLaive, Moat Academy is famous with success stories like this, which you should have known. It wasn't a flash in the pan.
"What advice do you have for those coming into Moat Academy? I think what most people struggle with is that, what Moat Academy is offering is too good to be true. I had that same struggle my first two weeks, until one day during the soft skills classes (Please never miss these classes) that if I followed all the rules and principles..." is an example of how Alex also attests to the impact of bootcamp answering your prejudice already, if you read his interview above.
Today, Alex works for ScamAI, a company based in Berkeley, California, USA, as a Senior Software Engineer. ScamAI is a platform for identifying AI-powered scams, speech clones, and deepfakes.
Arguments are unnecessary since those who stand to gain, are doing so and advancing to the international stage .
DevLaive: The so-called Alex got into software development in less than 4 months and even got a job?? Really??
This sounds unrealistic. Learning software development takes time and requires a lot of practice in order to master the skill.
Besides, "He" didn't mention the languages/frameworks that were taught during the course, neither did he mention the projects he built while learning.
Mastering even the very basics of software development takes time and requires a lot of practice. Let's be realistic.
“I’ve built full-stack applications, collaborated on projects, and secured two tech roles shortly after graduating” – Ifeoluwa
Do you remember Ifeoluwa Koleoso from our last cohort at Moat Academy, who developed the bicycle sharing web app, Peddle ( https://vimeo.com/1076869246/70b389b435 ), Bicycle Rental Platform?
Peddle is a bicycle rental platform where users can hire a bicycle and return it at the closest station to their destination.
He has transitioned into the industry as a software developer and has since been contributing to its growth. We met with him in this interview to hear more about his experiences before, during, and after the boot camp:
Can we meet you? My name is Ifeoluwa Koleoso, and I’m a passionate Full-stack Web developer dedicated to solving real-world problems through technology. I’m constantly learning and enjoy working on projects that make a meaningful impact.
What were you doing before coming to Moat Academy? Before joining Moat Academy, I was working in a non-tech role, and learning to code independently. I realized I needed a more structured and intensive approach to grow, and that’s what led me to Moat.
What is the name of your current company and role? I currently work at Cavidel Limited as a Full-stack Web Developer, where I focus on building scalable web applications and collaborating on product development.
How have things changed for you since gaining software development skills? My life has changed significantly. I now have the technical skills and confidence to take on real projects, work in tech teams, and continuously improve my craft.
What was your biggest fear before coming to Moat Academy and what do you feel about it now? My biggest fear was whether I would be able to keep up. I was scared and constantly questioned if software development was really for me. I doubted my ability to learn fast and apply the knowledge effectively. However, going through the training at Moat Academy changed that. The structured approach, hands-on projects, and support system helped me build confidence. I now feel more capable and see software development as a path I truly belong to.
How will you describe your experience in Moat Academy? It was intense, practical, and empowering. The bootcamp challenged me but also gave me the tools, mindset, and confidence to thrive in tech.
What have you been able to achieve with the training? I’ve built full-stack applications, collaborated on projects, and secured two tech roles shortly after graduating.
What advice do you have for those coming into Moat Academy? Come with an open mind and be ready to work hard. Ask questions, build as much projects as you can before the end of the boot camp, and trust the process. The results will speak for themselves.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In five years, I see myself in a senior cybersecurity engineering role—leading initiatives to protect systems, data, and users from emerging threats. I hope to be contributing to products that prioritize security, conducting security audits, and mentoring others who want to build careers in cybersecurity. I also aim to be involved in shaping secure development practices within engineering teams.
When you are thinking of accelerating your career path in the software development industry, think of Moat Academy.
Algorithm is a product of computational thinking. At Moat Academy, we don't just treat the symptoms, we treat the disease.
We focus on computational thinking which include the following steps: Decomposition Pattern Recognition Abstraction Algorithms
The final stage of computational thinking is algorithms. One issue with beginning programmers is that they place too much emphasis on tools such as algorithms, programming languages rather than the concepts and principles of programming itself. Our goal is to help people think like a programmer.
What you read there, is a summary of what we do , DSA is part of what makes one a good programmer and it is part of we do; we address it from the source.
airsaylongcome: I don’t see any mention of Algorithms in any of the core programming modules. Nothing about Data structures, nothing about searching and sorting. Why?
“While it is wise to learn from experience, it is wiser to learn from the experiences of others.”- Rick Warren
Let us learn from these three individuals:
Alex worked as a junior accountant for a firm on the island . As a youth, he was interested in technology to develop software solutions that would improve people's lives. But then, he was afraid to transition.
He said “ I was just going to waste my time and energy and would probably not learn anything by the end of the 3 months, because people usually say tech is hard, but Moat Academy changed that.”
He currently works as a Senior Software Engineer at Scam AI, a platform for detecting deepfakes, speech clones, and AI-powered scams.
Sunkanmi resigned from his position as a field engineer at Remote Monitoring Solution Company to pursue a career in technology. Then his fear surfaced.
He said, “My biggest fear was the complexity and difficulty attached to learning programming languages. I did not believe I would be able to understand programming and web development in that short space of time.”
Sunkanmi is currently employed in the UK at Hottinger Bruel & Kjaer (HBK) as a Software Engineer. The business serves a variety of industries, including defense, energy, and aerospace.
Mariam was a graduate who was job hunting and preparing for interviews when her aunt advised she go into software development. Then she developed a dream of becoming one of the best female software developers in the world, but along came this fear. According to her:
“My biggest fear was if I can ever be able to understand programming and the fear pushed me away from actually studying computer science in Uni. How I feel now? I am ready to go at any length to become the best in software development”
Undeterred, Mariam pursued her dream. Today, she works as a Senior Application Engineer at Sourcegraph, a complete AI Software Development Life Cycle platform headquartered at Silicon Valley, USA.
Aside from their status as elite professionals, these three individuals have four things in common:
1. They have dreams: They yearned for change and a better future. You should have big dreams too!
“Dream big, because dreams come true.” Alex Morgan
2. They overcame fear: Resistance comes after a dream. It takes numerous forms, including self-doubt, fear, procrastination, perfectionism, and self-sabotage. You should not allow fear to hold you back.
“If your dreams don't scare you, they're not big enough.” - Muhammad Ali
3. They are committed to their dream, investing time and resources for success. What separates an amateur from a professional is commitment!
"If you don't sacrifice for what you want, what you want becomes the sacrifice"—Anonymous
4. They all graduated from Moat Academy: Yes, their journey began at Moat Academy where an environment has been developed to encourage rapid growth and excellent performance in order for participants to become remarkable developers.
No, we do not provide lodging, although we do have participants from outside of Lagos-in our current bootcamp, there are those from the north-central and south-south. They handle the logistics and accommodations.
Nairaland is an open forum. Please , if you are achieving better results, come and list those you have schooled and they are making impact in the software development industry.
Until then, we still believe you have been so much beclouded with negativity that you can no longer acknowledge any thing good.
CirocBoi: Try and be honest with yourself, it's not matter of negativity, I will school you and your best tutor. NO CAP
And, from your investigation ; you cannot deduce that this is an innovation.
Innovation is defined as the process of bringing about new ideas, methods, products, services, or solutions that have a significant positive impact and value. It involves transforming creative concepts into tangible outcomes that improve efficiency, and effectiveness, or address unmet needs.
That is where Nigerians are falling behind, what you failed to recognize they are seeing it outside the country. Organizations and individuals outside Nigeria are reaching out to us. For example; last year, on the invitation of the Mayor of Moscow , we were in Russia where we signed a partnership agreement with Moscow Innovation Agency ( a development institute responsible for creating a truly favourable environment for the advancement of technology in Moscow; a one-stop shop for Moscow's innovation ecosystem.
Below is a shot clip of the event, right there is Abiola Ilupeju ( Principal Consultant , Moat Academy).
Please, what is achieved here is through pure dedication over the years .
If you can see all these people listed here and many more not listed working in global tech companies coming from one single place in Nigeria.
Nigerians, don't pull down a global organisation created by your people because of your ulterior motive even if you cannot support. Please just keep quiet. The bootcamp is for those interested.
Abdulrahman, Software Engineer at Uniswitch Chukwuma, Full Stack Developer at KPIE Efemezino, Frontend Developer at Agroye Rukayat, Software Developer, Uniswitch Joshua, Frontend Web Developer, CLIQup, Germany Dolapo, Full Stack Developer at KPIE Oluwatobi, Software Architect at Stanbic IBTC Racheal, Web Developer at Dorisa Technologies Joachim, Web Developer at The Wristband Company, UK Victor, Lead, User Experience Management at Sterling Bank
From the post , it is evidenced enough for everybody to see that we are achieving the results; it is not a marketing gimmicks. Moreover, he isn't a prospective participant as he once claimed to be an IT specialist but he is limited by his knowledge.
The issue here is that we are breaking down the entry barrier to this profession. And, some of those who have worked hard for years to get to where they are now are disappointed to see some of our graduates who have only spent a few months/years getting there!
We hope that more people interested in becoming developers can discern this and make an informed decision.
tunapawizzy: If you're genuine and your intentions are honourable, you wouldnt block him from engaging you in a conversation, he never said your graduates are not real, he simply pointed out to you that the promise of making software developer in 6 months is unrealistic. He even said your product/service is a good one that will sell on a good day and you don't have to give create expectations that are unreal. And you don't even sound like you know what you're talking. now you go ahead and block me too
What do you mean by unrealistic? Are you saying that all of the persons mentioned there aren't real? Do not discourage people from pursuing their dreams in life. People like you were the skeptics when alumni like Mariam, who works in a senior role with Sourcegraph (headquartered in Silicon Valley, USA), came to the bootcamp. If Mariam had listened to individuals like you, she would not be where she is today; last year, she was named a global Tech hero!
obaidan: Software Development is cool, lucrative and all. But you need to stop baiting innocent people looking for way out with this unrealistic promises. It's even not realistic to master just data structure in 6 months, but u want to make them software developer before the end of 2025.
