@ iLoveYouToo: No one who has performed well in the program is expected to intern. Internships and apprenticeships are the two routes to the professional world. An apprenticeship is mostly structured (time required and what to learn from time to time is already scheduled), and you learn from masters. In contrast, an internship is unstructured and you only learn from your senior colleagues while carrying out their tasks. At Moat Academy, we operate an apprenticeship model, and you have probably seen several of our graduates landing full-time jobs following their training. We support our alumni and develop long-term relationships with them. Since they have been empowered, they are no longer where they used to be , and our relationship even becomes mutual. Our Alumni are key part of our framework. The time commitment cannot be compromised; to be very good, you must commit the time. Our August cohort will require daily attendance. |
Technology is designed to make life easier — to automate processes, save time, and reduce human effort. But behind every line of code is a human, and behind every system is a person who relies on it. As software developers, our work is more than creating features. It is noble — and it carries serious responsibility. Technical Glitch, A Life Lost Following the release of candidates’ results by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Nigeria, a 19-year-old student tragically ended her life after receiving what she believed was a poor UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination) score: she thought her dreams were over. Her confidence was shattered. This is heartbreaking. Not until days after the release of the result that investigation into JAMB’s system revealed that the system could not be trusted due to technical error. Not a hack. Not a breach. Just… a glitch. But the consequence? Irreversible. The Weight We Carry as Developers At Moat Academy ( https://moatacademy.com/ ), when teaching software development, we lay emphasis on the need to test edge cases, understand the “why” beneath every abstractions and know the impact of every decision made in the code. It is not until one starts building systems for safety-critical industries like airline, health monitoring etc that security be given its place because the truth is: every piece of software is safety-critical as long as real people are using it. The platforms we build hold the dreams, data, time, and dignity of real users: even the smallest bug can have devastating consequences. Security has long be classified as a “non-functional requirement”, much like visual design or UX enhancements. How can security be a ‘nice to have’ ? optional ? No, It must be central to how we build! Avoiding the Glitch Some 8 years ago when Moat Academy was founded, one of the challenge in the software industry we sought to address was the proliferation of software developers who ‘created applications’ through a copy-and-paste approach – code monkeys who simply copy insecure and unvalidated codes from online forums and use indiscriminately because they either do not have a deep understanding or are not aware of security best practices in application development. Now, in the era of vibe coding, the conversation must shift even further. We must teach developers to understand the building blocks of software, to explore why things work, because that is how innovators and creators are born! The software we build has real consequences; it can determine: who gets admitted to school, who gets hired, who gets credit, who feels empowered and who feels invisible, we can not afford to leave the fate our users in the hands of LLM prompts. The tragedy surrounding the JAMB result is a reminder that all “technical glitches” must be investigated and where necessary, people must be held accountable. That’s why data protection regulations like the GDPR mandate disclosure of security breaches. Transparency and accountability help us grow, improve, and restore public trust.

"I currently utilize some of the concepts learnt during the boot camp from working with PHP and integrating APIs to develop and automate workflows."- Blessing ( one of the cohort members from our last concluded boot camp ) Can we meet you? My name is Blessing Iyobosa, a results-driven graduate of Mechanical Engineering. What were you doing before coming to Moat Academy? I worked as a reporting analyst. What is the name of your current company and role? I currently work in the Applications development Unit as a Process Automation Developer/Engineer in a Financial Institution. What exactly do you want to achieve with the software development skills? I want to use my software development skills to solve real-world and business problems by building digital solutions that are efficient, user-friendly, and scalable. Why did you choose Moat Academy for Developers? Three reasons: Track record of results, affordability and a recommendation. Moat Academy has a track record of developers it has trained over the years with various projects being developed at the end of the 13 weeks boot camp. I needed a place that would accelerate my progress and be able to come up with result(project) that will make me utilize tech stacks. Moat Academy is top quality/value when you compare it to the boot camp fee. These reasons made me choose Moat Academy. How have things changed for you since gaining software development skills? I am confident about my JavaScript skills because that was my ‘last bus-stop’ after completing HTML & CSS while trying self-learning. The academy has a unique and structured way of teaching which makes you understand concepts easily. It helped me go beyond just understanding syntax, just being a mere programmer to actually building meaningful full stack solutions. What was your biggest fear before coming to Moat Academy and what do you feel about it now? Will I actually be able to come up with a project or build a working application? Not just mere programming but putting all programming concepts together to come up with a working application. How possible was it within a short period of time? That was the biggest doubt I had, but after going through the Academy’s hands-on and well-structured approach, that doubt was eradicated. I now feel more confident, especially in my ability to break down problems and build functional solutions from scratch. How will you describe your experience in Moat Academy? It was a challenging yet transformative experience. Transformative in the sense that I came in as one with just basic knowledge of HTML and CSS and left being a Full stack web developer. What captured my attention was the standard training facility and environment the first day I stepped in. I met well-experienced tutors who carried the class along. I must commend the tutors as it not really that easy to teach and impact knowledge. I also got to meet and work with brilliant and smart minds as well. What have you been able to achieve with the training? I have been able to come up with web applications built from scratch and launch my self into the tech space. Moat has set the foundation. Can you share your experiences with us since you graduated from Moat Academy? Thus far, it has been a nice experience. I have written some tech assessments and gone though some interviews. I currently utilize some of the concepts learnt during the boot camp from working with PHP and integrating APIs to develop and automate workflows. What advice do you have for those coming into Moat Academy? Have the mindset that I am here for serious business and I must leave with a result. Do not miss classes or take classes with laxity because you might find yourself lagging behind. Practice, Practice, Practice what was taught in class because that is the only way you can get used to new concepts. Don’t stress yourself with external videos or resources during the course of the boot camp. Be active and participate in the leadership session. Be ready to learn and put in the best effort. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? A lead software Engineer. Are You Prepared for an Apprenticeship Journey? When Moat Academy ( https://moatacademy.com )was birthed, the plan of our faculty members was to replicate themselves in our Participants… And that is the power of Apprenticeship! A job seeker needs to get industry experience to perform better at the workplace. Such trainings give a huge experience in making their career a success. It is also important to choose the right path of training whether it is apprenticeship or internship to increase one’s employability. An apprenticeship is the practice of assigning a novice to learn a trade under the direction of an expert ( Master); as an apprentice, you’re in the trenches alongside the veterans to gain in-depth experience in a specific field. It consists of a combination of hands-on experience and classroom education. Under an apprenticeship model, you work alongside experts and doing what they do, you learn to solve challenges in a real-world context, working both creatively and effectively. In respect of the guild system, becoming a master craftsman took years of hard work. You had to pass through these stages : Apprentice : This is the first step in learning a trade. You learn and work with a master. You usually don’t earn any money and your family had to pay the master to take you on. In this stage, your focus is inwards. Your goal is not only to grow your skills and yourself but also to learn how to learn. You should be like a sponge, to soak up as much knowledge as possible. Journeyman : Once you had finished your apprenticeship you could earn money. Then you would be called journeyman. Sometimes you had to travel around to find work. Like the apprentice, the journeyman still maintaining an inward focus to learn and grow in their craft. And yet, add another focus of building an ever-larger portfolio of applications that demonstrates his progress in the craft. Master: As proof of your skill, you often had to make a masterpiece; eventually you might join a guild as a master craftsman. In short, masters view the acquisition, usage and sharing of superior skill as the most important part of being a software craftsman. At Moat Academy, you learn from the likes of Abiola: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyFwYGcyAfQ Abiola Ilupeju, professional experience spans over 15 years in which she developed various applications among which is a patented software product - Customer Management and Self-Service portal.
