Some of our Alumni and their stories: Mariam, Software Developer, Software Business Solution (July 2017 set): “I work with SBSC(Software Business Solution Consulting) as a software developer.. The training at moat academy has given me full confidence of a skilled software engineer. After 2 years of no job after my NYSC, I took a bold step of going for training in software development with no prior knowledge in the field. I remembered when I decided to go for it; I was still scared because I knew how difficult it was for me to pass the only borrowed course from computer science department back then in university and Mrs Abiola assured me not to worry, that I would be surprised how smooth it would go. Today I’m proud to say that I’m working in a third company as a software developer earning a 6 figures salary in a reputable organisation in just a year after my training at Moat Academy. I thank God and I thank moat academy “ Daniel, Software Engineer II Telnet Nigeria Limited (April 2017 set): “Within the past 1 year I have worked in two start-ups (Insidify Limited and StartUp Studio) and currently resumed at Telnet Nigeria Limited as a Software Engineer II. The time spent at Moat Academy in April 2017 formed the foundation in my programming journey and helped to better understand new languages. It was a stepping stone to get rooted and adequately prepare to take up the new challenges I face daily in my current role.” Mustapha, Software Developer (Digital Lab) Fidelity Bank — April 2018 set: “I was impressed with the learning culture which made me grounded in the fundamentals of programming as well as standards and policies to thrive and succeed in Information Technology Industry. Moat academy holds a special place in my heart.” Fisayo, NOC Engineer Interswitch Nigeria (April 2017 set): “Moat academy is an excellent choice for anyone who desires to follow a career in the Software space. They have well-seasoned trainers with vast knowledge of how the industry works. Their teaching method is quite engaging and this made me to push myself to be better and achieve more than I ever thought I could. Opting for moat academy still ranks very high amongst the decisions I have made. The Impact the academy has had on my career has been massive. The work ethic, the family feel, the free consultancy” Olusiji, Dipole Diamond. Software Engineer. (July 2017 set): “Learning the fundamentals of Software development in the immersive Moat academy boot-camp set me up immediately for an amazing career in technology. My career and life in general have been on an upward trajectory since then and I face a future filled endless possibilities. Thanks to Moat for providing me with that solid foundation to build on” Orolu, Head of IT RoyalCoast Technologies (April 2017) “My time at Moat helped me with the understanding of Content Management Systems, Database analysis and the use of MVC frameworks. These skills have come in very useful in my day to day activities at my place of work” Akugbe, Software Developer, Olivet Cloud Solutions Nigeria Limited (April 2018): “Before coming to Moat Academy, I had not written any code in php and my knowledge of web technologies would rank 2 or 3 on a scale of 10. After 10 weeks of intensive training I built a full fledge project team collaborative application which I called Cohort. This was only possible because of the quality of training I received from Moat Academy and the support gained from the community (Moat Academy). The training I received from Moat Academy helped me learn industry standard, industry best practices and cutting edge technologies such as version control, code igniter php framework for building web applications. I went on to learn php Laravel web framework which most company sorted. Currently, I work at Olivet Cloud Solutions Nigeria Limited as a Software Developer in the Production department. As a software developer at Olivet Cloud Solutions, I have been involved in projects and my goal of becoming a world class developer is being realized because of the quality of training I received at Moat Academy” Afeh, Junior Developer, Business Solutions DipoleDiamond Ltd (April 2018): “The greatest from my point of view is the essential foundation I got from my training at MA. I get to see new things been done at my organization (which I am thankful for) regularly so I know my learning cannot stop. Without the MA foundation, I would not have the confidence to believe, and the courage to dream that I cannot become better at programming, and applying it as a tool to proffer tangible solutions.” Bunmi,Founder, Avaley Consultings, Trainer with Google on Digital Skills For Africa programme (September 2017): “I run an ecommerce store at the moment and then I’m also a trainer with Google for the Digital Skills for Africa program. Basically, learning at Moat Academy gave me an edge and boosted my confidence in the digital marketing space, even though I didn’t pursue programming full time. The knowledge I acquired has also enabled me become independent as I run a digital consulting company too and we really cannot talk with our clients without advising them on the kind of websites to build, how it should be responsive and search engine optimized and so on. So, really the knowledge gained from Moat Academy has indeed given a headshot in my field.” If you are thinking of an accelerated career in the software development industry, think Moat Academy! Moat Academy for Developers trains its participants to a very high proficiency level in software development where they can develop various web applications to solve business and socioeconomic problems Last week marked the end of the Cohort 7, classic batch. Some Interesting Web Applications were developed by the participants with some sharing their experiences. We saw the display of various web applications developed by the participants such as the food ordering platform for a restaurant by Abiola , an E-hospital platform by Abiodun, a job site by Komeno and so on. Halima built a role-based access control platform, Patient Management System where a hospital can register and admit patients assigning them to a bed and ward, the doctors can create/view medical history and create treatment plan plus diagnosis and Nurses can view patients’ treatment plan. Patients when discharged as outpatient can also book appointments through the platform. Halima, in her words summarized her experience at Moat Academy: “I had an amazing experience at moat Academy. When I enrolled I knew nothing about writing code, I just had interest but after 10 weeks at moat academy I can build a web application. The facilitators worked hard to make sure everyone were carried along and could code. I want to THANK YOU for making the beginning of my career in software engineering eventful" – Halima Read full article on http://moatacademy.com/blog/2018/07/20/some-interesting-web-applications/ Apply to be part of the next coding boot camp on www.moatacademy.com |

An excerpt from the interview we had with one of our alumni from most recently concluded boot camp, who now works in the industry. “I got a developer job in less than a month after my training….I can tell you that coming to Moat Academy ranks among the best decisions I have ever made in life”- Afeh MA: Can we meet you? Afeh: My name is Araromi Afekhafe; my friends call me Afeh. I am an Elect./Elect. Engineering graduate with a Masters degree in Telecom Engineering. I am of the opinion that whatever is worth doing is worth doing well. I came down to Lagos from Benin City for the sole purpose of attending the Cohort 6 Bootcamp of Moat Academy, and I was greatly privileged to have been the class captain of the Cohort. MA: What were you doing before joining Moat Academy? Afeh: I was an International Support staff for a program (MAST Nigeria) sponsored by Wycliffe Associates, USA. By God’s grace, I was part of a two-man team serving as Team Leads tasked with the responsibility of preparing for, and managing Bible Translation workshops (held in Jos, Plateau State) for language groups from all across Nigeria. My contract was fully executed with them by August 2017 so I returned back to Benin City to map out my next course of action as regards my desire to go into software development, a plan I dropped before moving to Jos. MA: Why choose Moat Academy? Afeh: The thing is, my previous job had conditioned me to work with “quarters,” a three-month time-frame. So I decided to investigate further by going to the Moat Academy website, then I saw the detailed course outline which was to run for 10 weeks. I was like “Wow! This is pretty impressive… but is this really possible or is it just a very good scam?” MA: What exactly do you want to achieve with the software development skills? Afeh: To become a part of those (Nigerian youths in this generation) who employ programming as a means of proffering solutions to some of the challenges (social and economic) around us in this country—solutions that will spur individual and societal development as well as place Nigeria on the world stage of IT. MA: How has things changed for you since gaining software development skills? Afeh: If I am to pick just ONE thing, it would be perspective and this is in two-folds. First, whenever I see any webpage now I subconsciously begin to figure how it was put together and what technologies were used. Second, I now frequently examine the world around me and ask myself how software development can be useful in certain situations and environments. Another is my thought process; it is one thing to say you are a programmer and another to think like one. A third is that I got a developer job in less than a month after my training. MA: What was your biggest fear before coming to Moat Academy and what do you feel about it now? Afeh: At first I feared that it was a scam and if not, maybe a programme that will not deliver all that has been promised on its cover. I did some research online and one person in particular I really did look at was Toba (his Facebook profile and the dipoleDIAMOND website). I was like, “If this is a scam then these guys must be very good! But if it is not, how then is it possible for a newbie like me to obtain two years worth of experience in ten weeks?” I decided to take the plunge albeit taking the precaution (do not laugh), of asking if I can resume by paying just the first installment, I told myself if it ended up being a scam or a huge joke then the losses I shall count shall be bearable. Lo and behold, based on my experience of the first three weeks, nobody reminded me to pay the remaining instalment. At that point, my fear was now; whether I would be able to cope and finish the race… but thank God for how Moat Academy is set up, not only did I finish the race, my expectations were surpassed. And today, I can tell you that coming to Moat Academy ranks among the best decisions I have ever made in life and of course, the positive consequences of that singular decision shall reverberate through the future. MA: How will you describe your experience in Moat Academy? Afeh: The learning environment in Moat Academy is a fantastic one. Though it is a family affair between the faculties and the students, yet there is that constant push from them to keep students on their toes. I discovered that, embracing it all, even the different approaches and teaching methods of the different facilitators, helped to re-arrange my thought process and the way to analyze a situation. I have learnt to think on my feet, to approach any problem the way a developer should, and to come up not just with a solution but the simplest solution possible. I was taught by facilitators who not only know, but have been integral parts of various IT companies and are also well-established tech-entrepreneurs in their own right. It is this industrial angle from the faculties that makes it more rewarding for a beginner compared to if that beginner decides to be self-taught. MA: What advice do you have for those coming into Moat Academy? Afeh: Every instruction you are given is meant to serve a purpose, you will do yourself much good to follow and adhere to each and every one of them no matter what issues they touch on, or how they may sound at the time of giving MA: What have been able to achieve with the training? Afeh: I developed a web app titled “debateNaija” (now called shareViewNaija) which I am currently on, expanding on its features with the aim of making it live soonest. A representative of an IT firm (dipoleDIAMOND Ltd) was present during our demo day, and that singular contact was the means through which God gave me a job with the organisation. At my workplace, even though I get to hear and see incredible things being done, it is the training at Moat Academy that has given me the solid foundation on which to build upon and acquire more skills. The popularity of websites has led to many people using the World Wide Web (or the web) interchangeably with the word “Internet”. They are not synonymous; this article differentiates the two terms. Definition: Computer Network is a collection of computers and other devices which are connected together for the purpose of communication and sharing of resources. The Internet is a kind of computer network but it is a huge and a global one, as it connects millions of computers and other devices together, allowing them to communicate. It is important to note that the Internet has no central server that coordinates these connections. The Web on the other hand, is a collection of documents (web pages with texts, links to images, audio or video) which are built on the Internet and allow users to interact with the documents as if they were all on a single computer. The web pages are commonly accessed via applications called browsers and are linked to each other via what is known as hyperlinks to form websites. The computers on the Internet communicate using what is known as protocols (rules), for example the protocol used by web is HTTP while the protocol used by email is SMTP and so on. As we can see, the web is just a portion of the Internet; built on the Internet just as the e-mail but the web is perhaps the most prominent and widely used part. So from now on, stop saying “Internet” when what you really mean is the “Web”. Credit: www.moatacademy.com |
I got a developer job in less than a month after my training….I can tell you that coming to Moat Academy ranks among the best decisions I have ever made in life”- Afeh An Excerpt of the interview we had with one of our alumni. MA: Can we meet you?
