With the pandemic, there has been an increase in the adoption of technologies especially software by businesses and individuals alike; so are the ‘bad guys’ (the hackers and others that exploit IT systems) increasing their technical know-how and hoping to have a field day, this is evidenced with the rise in the reported high-end cybercrimes of recent. As developers, we have great responsibility to ensure our applications do not leave loopholes for cyber fraud and other IT security risks lest our business and clients be taken to the cleaners. And, as part of the maturation process of a software developer is the ability to be able to write codes that do not introduce vulnerabilities into the system. Software security and privacy is no longer negotiable; it is now a must if we intend to stay in business and remain remarkable as developers. We can no longer wait to deal with it after the codes have been written and the software deployed, software security and privacy should be managed throughout the entire software development life cycle. Moat Academy in partnership with CertNexus, a vendor-neutral certification body in USA will equip you with secure coding knowledge and skills required to design and develop hack-proof applications for business and organizational use with confidence and further certify you as a Cyber Secure Coder by validating your capabilities to distinguish you in the industry. For more information, please visit https://securecoding.moatacademy.com/ and also sign up using the link (Application closes as soon as all slots are filled or by October 10, 2020 for our next secure coding boot camp). |

Below is another interview with one of our alumni, Sunkanmi (mentioned above) sharing his experience at the boot camp : “I was able to develop a professional networking site and I now have a job as a Software Developer” – Sunkanmi Can we meet you? My Name is Sunkanmi Daniel Olawuwo. I studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering with no prior knowledge of programming before coming to Moat Academy. What were you doing before joining Moat Academy? I was a Field Engineer with a Remote Monitoring Solutions Company; I resigned because i wanted to change my career path. What exactly do you want to achieve with the software development skills? I am looking to pursue a successful career in software development; then establish tech startups that will proffer solutions to some of the challenges being faced in the world. How has things Changed For you since gaining Software Development Skills? It has helped me to understand and be able to work with the technology around me. In a way it has improved my communication, creative thinking, and self-confidence. It gives me a newfound sense of energy to really pursue the goals i want in life. What was your biggest fear before coming to Moat Academy...? My biggest fear was the complexity and difficulty attached to learning programming languages. I did not believe I would be able to understand programming and web development in that short space of time. How I feel now? I feel empowered because i have one of the most in-demand skills in the world. With God, hard work and consistency I am on course for a successful career in software development. How will you describe your experience at Moat Academy? The boot camp is a mirror image of what to expect out there as a software developer with daily assignments and mini-projects every week. The approach to teaching is world class; the facilitators are patient and always ready to help. What have you been able to achieve with the training? Towards the end of the boot camp, we worked on our final projects. I was able to develop a web application (Professional Networking Site: which allows members to share posts, comment on posts, follow and unfollow one another) from scratch to completion and I now have a job as a Software Developer. What advice do you have for those coming into Moat Academy? My advice for them is that they should be devoted and dedicated to the training. Moat Academy has its own standards; students need to work hard in other to achieve the expected outcome after 11 weeks. What is your future Outlook in Software Development? I have a solid foundation thanks to Moat Academy, I am looking to learn more and grow through the ranks as quick as possible. One of our Alumni ( mentioned above), Kenneth speaks on life during and after the boot camp “…I’ve hosted my first application which helps more that fifteen thousand applicants and a university administrative body manage their screening process” - Kenneth Moat Academy: Why did you choose Moat Academy for Developers? Kenneth: At first, I chose Moat Academy because the training syllabus is rich, and the price tag is quite affordable. From my observation, I realized that the training environment is satisfying, and the tutors are widely experienced in their various fields and their training skills are awesome. Moat Academy: How has things changed for you since gaining the software development skills? Kenneth: Software development is a very attractive course because the world is gradually upgrading from the traditional ways of life into an automated process. From my experience so far, I realized that any software application built to tackle and solve a problem in our society is 100% welcome and appreciated by the society. After gaining my software development skills with the help of Moat Academy, I realized that commitment is a very serious task that must be considered to enable us accomplish a particular project, time management and self discipline is a big project on its own; how I was able to accomplish and launch my first application was by the grace of God, but I have taken a decision to always be a manager of myself and my activities. Implementation is not as easy as it was during my training, though my mindset then was that my tutors were pushing us so hard within a short period of time, but being in the field with no tutor to help me manage my time and project is very demanding and confusing, I’ve been very careful. Moat Academy: What was your biggest fear before coming to Moat Academy and what do you feel about it now? Kenneth: My biggest fear was to work on an application on my own and to enable it to be accessed worldwide, thanks to Moat Academy’s commitment in my dream. Today, I’ve hosted my first application which helps more that fifteen thousand applicants and a university administrative body manage their screening process. The appreciation/recommendation after using the application is beautiful and encouraging. Moat Academy: How will you describe your experience at Moat Academy? Kenneth: Studying with more than 10 intelligent people in my cohort is not an easy task, most especially when you are not getting a particular line of code and others are done with it. But these challenges are what actually brought us closer and stronger together. Thanks to the tutors who always gave listening ears; they always guide and encourage me; I can’t stop thanking them. The unstoppable weekend projects really gave me a lot of sleepless nights - during my training, I was in a different world, my relationship with friends was cut down to the minimum, most of my friends thought I was purposely avoiding them, they couldn’t understand that I was in the war front of software development. All these experiences are not wasted, and they are actually the fuel to my dream. Moat Academy: What have been able to achieve with the training? Kenneth: I’ve achieved so much from the training; Self-confidence, project management, debugging skills, project hosting, development/implementation of complicated application from scratch. Moat Academy: What advice do you have for those coming into Moat Academy? Kenneth: Like what a wise man will always say; you have to unlearn to learn. Don’t compete with your colleagues in class, compete with your doubts/fears. Don’t keep malice in a learning environment, always carry an open heart. Malice and anger can only discourage you and you might end up forgetting your initial purpose of learning. What brought you to Moat Academy is nothing compare to what you can achieve after your course. Moat Academy: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Kenneth: I see myself developing and implementing an application that we need in our nation. Apply today on https://moatacademy.com/signup/apply , let us give you the ‘Moat’ advantage! |

When corona virus unexpectedly invaded our world, lockdown became the order of the day. Businesses, schools even our religious and social lives were all put on a halt; but there came software applications to the rescue - we saw businesses embracing the new normal by “ working from home” with applications such as Zoom, Microsoft team and so on , helping them cut their losses; school using different e-learning applications to still keep our wards abreast ; we tried to keep in touch with our friends, family and the rest of the world with Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, Nairaland and so on. In fact we can’t imagine what the world would have been without software applications , behind those applications are some ‘special’ people that decided some years back to become software developers and today, they are saving the world for us. There is no better time to be a software developer than now as there is still much to be done. Here is another decision-making time! Apply on www.moatacademy.com to join us from August 31, 2020 to become a software developer that inculcates globally accepted best practices before the end of year 2020. |

Our Graduand, Uthman Finds a Solution to Get Rid of Potholes on our Roads Potholes and damaged roads are major contributors to traffic congestion and they do lots of damage to vehicles plying them, the result is a longer commuting time than required and frequent visits to the mechanic workshops (this obviously affects the personal economies of car owners) . Finding a solution to ease these pain points for the populace was Uthman goal when he decided to develop Road Report Application where commuters can report bad roads around them; allowing other road users to be pre-informed and make contingency plans before journeying on the respective roads. The application can also help relevant authorities to keep track of their maintenance duties. Uthman was able to develop the application with the technologies he learnt at the boot camp such as HTML, CSS , bootstrap, Javascript/ jquery , MySQL database, AJAX and PHP; and on the last day he presented his first version (Minimum Viable Product) which was ready to go live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkuArEVWV_A With Road Report Application, it is now ‘ one for all, all for one ‘, because everybody can now do their part in getting rid of the ugly road situation and nobody is actually left behind… Don’t complain, just report it! |
Moat Academy (www.moatacademy.com) is a software developer hotbed; we have created an environment that fosters rapid growth and high performance to make our participants become remarkable developers within a short period of time. While our participants are still at the academy, they come up with various ideas which they develop to software products as a demonstration of the skills they acquire from the programme. Our Graduand, Dika Provides a Platform for Skilled University Students When Unilancer, a platform developed by Dika Emmanuel Ututu is made public, skilled university students will have a cause to smile to the bank as their skills will generate wealth for them even while they are still on campus. The product sprung up from his personal experience while he was also a student; he said, “the requirements from most freelancing platforms are difficult for students to meet”. Having a platform dedicated just for skilled students to ply their trade will go a long way so he longed towards providing a solution. Dika’s dream of developing the freelancing platform became a reality during our just concluded bootcamp when he developed it from scratch to completion (using HTML5, CSS3 with some bootstrap classes to design its responsive User Interface, Javascript as client-side programming language, modelling the database with MySQL workbench and using PHP OOP, MySQL along with other technologies for the server side) within the boot camp time frame. He called it, Unilancer. Unilancer is a one-stop shop where skilled university students can showcase their skills and create service/product offerings (called gig) and prospective clients /customers can transact business with them through it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvdrEcpPeAs On the last day of the boot camp, July 05, 2019; Dika presented the application showcasing the features, how it works and how he deployed some technologies to achieve it. Please apply on www.moatacademy.com to be part of our October coding boot camp. |
Our Alumnus, Olanrewaju develops a platform to enhance access to Healthcare delivery Most Nigerians will agree that access to good healthcare delivery and unemployment are part of the major problems that have plagued our society for years; for Olanrewaju Adesanya, having been armed with software development skills; he decided to contribute his quota by developing a platform, Get Caregivers to ameliorate these pain points for the populace. Get Caregivers is a web application that provides easy access for the users to hire caregivers (trained professionals and other individuals) at the comfort of their homes while creating employment opportunities for this category of professionals. On the last day of our cohort 11 boot camp, July 05, 2019, Olanrewaju made a presentation of Get Caregivers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a58BhiP7YBA When this application becomes commercially available, it will be a big relief for those with aged parents and people with disability/ diseases that required special care among others. Moat Academy( www.moatacademy.com ): A place where you are empowered to turn your ideas into software products You have this great idea, and seeing it come to fruition seems like an herculean task! Funny enough, the gap between what you have in your imagination (or written somewhere) and seeing it online where it is accessible to others, meeting needs is just 11 weeks! Yes, 11 weeks spent at the Moat Academy coding boot camp can get you up to the proficiency level in software development, needed to develop your idea into an application. Have you ever wondered how those popular applications were built by some individuals such as Facebook by Mark Zuckerberg? It’s simply because the founders possessed the knowledge/intellectual capital - this is the capital you need in this digital age to ignite your idea (even before investing any other capital). At Moat Academy, we equip our participants with this, of which many have partaken and today, are armed with the capability to develop applications; like Wisdom( an Alumnus), founder of www.fatibobosms.com.ng.
