At the just-concluded coding bootcamp, our graduands presented the projects they worked on in the course of the programme. Please see the video of Afeh presenting the web application he developed : https://youtu.be/pfb7WR2KgOY |
@Webman007 Our graduands build great "stuff", applications that solve various socio-economic problem or address one confronting us. Infact , a web application built by one of our Alumni, Wisdom was ranked in top 24,000 sites in Nigeria by Alexa in less than 2 months of GOLIVE ( we would have loved to share the name of the web application but wouldn't want this post deleted). Please see a video of the presentation by Afeh ( one of our graduands), who developed a platform "Debate Naija" during the coding bootcamp. The presentation was made on their last day at the bootcamp, https://youtu.be/pfb7WR2KgOY |

It’s the 10th Week! Our Cohort V Classic Participants are Developing Their Web Applications (Final Projects) The journey that started barely 10 weeks ago has seen our Cohort Five participants being taken through the frontend application development to database modelling and design, and now server-side programming. After the second week, we featured two of them, Michael and Wisdom who shared their first three weeks’ experiences and also showcased their Week Two mini-projects as our custom is http://moatacademy.com/blog/2017/11/13/some-participants-share-their-first-3-weeks-experience-at-our-coding-bootcamp/. It is our joy to let you see how both ‘journeymen’ have since progressed to become software developers; developing their own applications: Wisdom is developing a “special” forum we have called Demo Forum to protect his intellectual property as he intends to make it commercially available within the next few weeks when all the intended features would have been implemented. Though it is work in progress (WIP), please check it out by signing up and logging in to post comments (textual) and reply to existing comments on http://5.153.47.252/~moatcons/wisdom/ Michael wishes to solve accommodation problem for the students in his alma mater by developing a platform he called “Easylodging” where students can easily find vacant rooms for rent. It is also a work in progress; please check it out: first, as a visitor by searching lodges by locations and secondly as a user by signing up to post vacant lodges for online visitor to see on http://5.153.47.252/~moatcons/easylodging Putting all they learnt during the 10-weeks period into practice, participants developed a range of several interesting applications. Other web applications developed by participants of the cohort include “Teachify”; a platform to find private tutors, Carrygo”; a courier management system and so on. We see a great future ahead of them all! www.moatacademy.com |

“Actually in Moat Academy, I have learnt programming languages that people used years to learn within two month”- Jamiu Ayinde Below is the excerpt from an Interview we had with one of our ex-trainee at Moat Academy during their last week at boot camp: Moat Academy (MA): Can we meet you? Jamiu: My name is Ayinde Jamiu Kunle, I am a graduate of philosophy, Lagos state University and I’m also running a masters degree in the same course. I hail from Ogun state and I have interest in web application development MA: You studied Philosophy and you are moving into software development; or are you trying to combine software Development and philosophy? if so, why are you merging the two together? Jamiu: As one of my mentors told me recently that the future of the world or the language of the world is Coding. I felt, having a background in philosophy, the only thing I can do to live in the future is to learn coding, so that ‘s one of the reason I deemed it fit to see how I can upgrade my philosophy knowledge and move ahead of my peers so that with the knowledge of the coding, I will be able to speak to the future right from now. MA: What exactly do you want to achieve with the software development skills? Jamiu: Learning software development, the first thing I want to achieve is; I want to make money with it, so that when people contact me, I will be able to develop applications for them. I also want to be able to tell the world that it is not only those who study computer science that can become software developer, every field should be able to have their own share from it, because when we talk about automation, all other disciplines have areas where processes can be automated. I also want to be able to develop some unique software products that will scale through the world so that I will have my name written somehow on the sand of time. MA: Prior to coming to Moat Academy, what are the things you have done in the software development field? Jamiu: Because of my desire to know about software development, I had tried to do one or two things learning it, sometime ago, about two years ago, I was able to launch an app on google playstore by just using a “drag and drop ” application. Majorly I was used to using Contents Management Systems (CMS) which is more or less like copying and paste; not having my own unique way of achieving or doing things. I was also able to use wordpress generally but at the end of the day I was not always satisfied because the situation was like me following a path that someone else has channeled for me to follow, it was like being boxed in some ways that someone had created, but I felt like I could create my own ideas and implement in different ways. Coming to Moat Academy has made me a freeman in the software development world MA: how can you describe your experience at Moat Academy? Jamiu: My experience in Moat Academy… If there has ever been any period in my life at a stretch that I have learnt new things on a daily basis, I think it’s my stay at Moat Academy. I learnt new things in an amazing ways; things that I felt would take me a life-time to achieve, I learnt within just two months. In fact, the way the lectures were being dished out and the way my brain actually grabbed those things is just like magnets connecting things together. Actually in Moat Academy, I have learnt programming languages that people used years to learn within two month. I learnt about HTML, CSS which are the basics, I also learnt core programming like JavaScript and PHP. I learnt all those things effectively and efficiently. MA: What part of Moat Academy do you like most? Jamiu: The part I actually enjoyed most is the part of PHP, I enjoyed the part when we got to “Function” – It is memorable to me because before then, anytime I saw codes in Function, I would immediately reject it, my brain rejected taking it, for months when I was previously learning programming, anytime I got to that topic, I would just go back… I had already told myself that “You cannot understand this part” but as soon as the topic was introduced at Moat Academy, it was just as if somebody had just introduced the most basic thing in programming to me, since then I love /enjoy writing codes using function – that part I think is one thing I cannot forget. Another thing I also want to say which makes me love Moat Academy is the fact that while we were training, I always reconnect to my first degree – we would always have something to do with logic and I always remember how I could connect my philosophical thoughts to what we were being taught. MA: So far, what have you been able to achieve with the skills that you have acquired at Moat Academy? Okay, part of the things I have achieved is first, I have developed an app which is one of my favorite app I call it “Zakat App” which I think can be used all over the world, the second thing I have also been able to achieve is an app that we developed in class, that is the latecomer app which can be used by any organization to capture the attendance of their staff. My personal project is also worthy of mention – I developed a trainers hub… but away from all these projects, I think one thing that is core is the fact that I now have the capability and know that I can develop any kind of web products in the world. After awhile in Moat Academy, whenever I meet with some of my friends outside there and they show me some of the challenges they are having with their codes, I am able to understand and solve the problem. Just recently, I was only looking at a facebook bot, studying the new messenger bot introduced, and I was like “we can also come up with our own and design something in this respect”, before now, such thing couldn’t cross your mind, the joy of looking at codes and understand their meaning and also being able to interpret and think of doing things of that magnitude, I think it’s rewarding. MA: you were part of the wining team of the United Nations (UN) hackathon, can you tell us how you heard about it and your experience at the hackathon Jamiu: Smart Transit is the winning team in Lagos for the connect to effect UN hackathon 2017, getting to the event was through no other means than Moat Academy. I just saw an email from one of the directors of Moat Academy to us that we should register and apply for the event. If not for the training I have received, I wouldn’t have been confident enough to even apply to that kind of event. But with the training and the encouragement I received from Moat Academy, I took that with me and attended the programme. To my amazement I participated with my other team mates and we presented the prototype we developed, an application whereby people will have access to smart information of transportation within their environment. We are currently building the final product peradventure we may have the opportunity to travel to the UN headquarters and present during one of their meetings this year. I give all glory to God and I thank Moat Academy for teaching me some of the things I applied at the event and urging me to go ahead to apply it. MA: What is the future outlook for you now with the skills you have armed yourself with in the Software Industry? Jamiu: The future is very wide and we hope for greater and better things but one of the things I will like to do in the very near future is to launch some applications, within the next couple of weeks or months, I would like to have launched applications that will be use in different part of the world. I want to be able to work in software Development Company where we will be developing apps and solving people problems. The other thing I also want to do is to learn more about coding, first thing I learnt at Moat Academy is , there is need to unlearn, learn and relearn, so I have actually learnt new things moving forward I want to keep updating myself with newer technologies, programming skills and so on. I also want to be known as one of the best programmers in the world. |
“If you want a place with family touch, where you are mentored even after your training in software development, Moat academy should be your point of call.” – Fisayo (One of our ex-trainee, now works with Interswitch Group after the bootcamp). Below is the excerpt from an Interview we had with one of our ex-trainee at Moat Academy during their last week at the boot camp: Can we meet you? My name is Fisayo Idowu, a graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University. I studied Electronics and Electrical Engineering. I am undergoing training in Moat Academy. Why are you moving into the field of software development? Firstly, I like automated systems where processes run with little or no human interference. So in my fourth year I had an idea but my partner and I couldn’t come up with the capital to fund it. We looked at acquiring skills we need so as to reduce the cost and since I already have little experience in programming, I decided to get trained by seasoned professionals. Prior to coming to Moat Academy what was your exposure to software development, what are some of the things you had done? Basically, there was a time I did self learning on html and css and by the time I got to Javascript I had to stop because it was becoming complex and imaginary to me. This [coding] is one aspect I believe we need mentors who can simplify codes for young ones that are interested, now if I see lines of codes, I can decipher and explain it – This was the issue I had when I started; as the tutorials made it look hard. How will you describe your experience in Moat Academy? Wow! For the past 10 weeks it has been great. I didn’t even know I would survive it, as it has been intensive. Coming in here every Morning …. For me, it has been great all the way What part of the training did you enjoy most? For me, I enjoyed styling and javascript but functionality is one aspect I am trying to appreciate and enjoy more now because that’s the brain box of any application. What do you like about Moat Academy? It is something different, I like the family environment; if we want to get serious, we get serious and when we want to play, we play but at the end we get the job done which is the reason why Moat Academy exists. What do you think you achieved during the training? From the training, I have achieved a lot, for example nobody can ask me what I can do again ( in a contemptuous manner) because I know what I can do so I believe I am going to fit into anywhere now in software development because I have been empowered and my mind has been opened to things I can do because over 10 weeks we have been taken through lot of modules and it is a kind of platform that have been given us, personally so I can leverage on it and keep learning and improving myself. I see the sky as the starting point What is your future outlook in software development industry? I desire to push my online platform so that when it comes to online shopping in the world, I will be reckoned with. It is like a passion to me, I want to pursue that passion. I also want to delve into content creation as there are lots of apps these days with no content. Compare your level in software development when coming into the Bootcamp and where you are now. When I came in I used to hear of database, all those things…. It was as if it was something very big. When I go through job descriptions like you must have knowledge of mysql… as if only few people can know it. Coming here has exposed me to lots of things that would have taken a longer time to know. What advice do you have for those coming into Moat Academy? Young people complain about capital when it comes to starting business but they forget that the major capital is to first acquire the needed skill in whatever they desire to venture into. So if your business requires you to have an online presence, get trained so you reduce your start up cost and in a way improve yourself. Also attach yourself to people that can put you through so that the process will not be as long and this is what Moat Academy offers .I have gone through it both practical and hands-on experience and the fee charged is a token compared to what you stand to gain. If you want a place with family touch, where you are mentored even after your training in software development, Moat academy should be your point of call. |

A very interesting article: The unemployed and the employable applicant: A chasm between the academics and the industry Sometime ago I worked with a corporate organization and there was a need to recruit more hands in my unit so the application process was opened up to the public. We had several applications pouring in, day in and out; short listings were done and interviews were carried out but yet we could not find suitable applicants for the jobs as weeks went by, even months! Then I came to a conclusion that it is paradoxical that in a country where we have high level of unemployment, employers still find it difficult getting suitable hands to fill up skilled labour vacancies. Coming home to the software industry, take a search through most job listing sites in the country, you will find a large number of unfilled vacancies for software developers; yet we have a large number of computer science graduates unemployed. This point was buttressed by the case of a female computer science graduate that carried a placard on Lekki expressway soliciting for jobs. The most alarming part of this scenario is that such job adverts run for months – meaning the company is finding it difficult getting suitable hands for the jobs thereby incurring more cost on their recruitment process. Where lies the problem, and what are the solutions? It is unarguably true that there is a chasm between the tertiary institutions’ curriculum and the industry’s needs. While everybody believes the university community is to groom the youths for the job market; yet its curriculum is more theoretical than it can be applied immediately to solve real life challenges. And, that is where the industry generates their revenue: from solving real life problems. The industry is a highly demanding environment where newly recruits should hit the ground and run, they want youths that will from the first day start solving real life problems. The fair truth is that the tertiary institutions have done their own bits; the focus of the university/polytechnic is to churn out youths that are well refined for the society: vast in different subjects’ areas. Its curriculum usually digresses into subjects which are not primarily focused at solving a particular industry’s need. How do we bridge this gap? At Moat Academy we have come as an intermediate in bridging this consequential chasm so that the unemployed can be armed with skills that can solve real life problems thus making them fit for the industry’s need. Our approach is more of an apprenticeship where you learn software developments from experts in the field and it is 100% practical and job-oriented. Our curriculum has been designed in a way to fit in the missing link between the university and the industry so that our graduands can hit the ground from day one and run in any software company in the world; making them highly demanded professionals by employers. Registration is now open for our next batch, please visit www.moatacademy.com to register |

Below is the excerpt from an Interview we had with one of our ex-trainee at Moat Academy, Mariam Adedeji (Now works as a Developer with Concept Nova Ltd) Moat Academy (MA): Can we meet you? Mariam: I am Omobolanle Mariam Adedeji, I studied Petroleum Engineering with no prior knowledge in programming before coming to Moat Academy. MA: What were you doing before joining Moat Academy? Mariam: Well nothing really, just applying for jobs and preparing for interviews MA: How did you come across Moat Academy? Mariam: My aunt suggested moat to me MA: What exactly do you want to achieve with the software development skills? Mariam: To be the best female developer and build a world – wide known application MA: How has your life changed since gaining software development skills? Mariam: Hmmm, that’s a big question… it has made me so confident of myself, like; I can boldly talk about my career with anybody without being scared of the next question getting thrown at me. I now feel like am needed in the industry, and unlike before when I didn’t know what I want and would go for any interview, I now have a full understanding of what I want and standing by what I want got me here today. MA: What was your biggest fear before coming to Moat Academy and what do you feel about it now? Mariam: My biggest fear was if I can ever be able to understand programming and the fear pushed me away from actually studying computer science in Uni. How I feel now? I am ready to go at any length to become the best in software development MA: How will you describe your experience in Moat Academy? Mariam: Moat Academy is the best academy you can ever choose for your career in software development. Their trainers made sure we understand no matter how much it takes to learn. Moat was like a home to me, felt like I was in the midst of family that I didn’t want to leave at the end of the training. MA: What advice do you have for those coming into Moat Academy? Mariam: Just give your all and you would be surprised at what you can achieve in 10 weeks. MA: What have you been able to achieve with the training? MA: What is your future outlook in software development industry? Mariam: Watch out for me as one of the best female developer in the world -> future outlook Our next batch of training starting October 17, 2017, visit www.moatacademy.com. |
Another interesting interview with a Moat Academy Alumni, “I got my first job as a software developer less than 2 weeks after my completion of Moat Academy training” – Aribo ‘Toba http://moatacademy.com/blog/2017/08/26/i-got-my-first-job-as-a-software-developer-less-than-2-weeks-after-my-completion-of-moat-academy-training-aribo-toba/ Below is the excerpt from an Interview we had with one of our ex-trainee at Moat Academy, Aribo Oluwatoba (Now works as a Developer with dipoleDIAMOND Ltd) Moat Academy (MA): Can we meet you? My name is Aribo Oluwatoba, I am a graduate of Civil Engineering and have a love for how things work. MA: What were you doing before joining Moat Academy? Toba: Just like most Nigerian graduate, job hunting after service. MA: How did you come across Moat Academy? Toba: I was searching across the internet for a good boot camp where I could get trained on software development. Several search led me to Moat academy. I came across the advert again on Nairaland. I was scared, but I just gave it a shot. “You wouldn’t know how good the taste is until you try it out”, I consoled myself. It ended up the best decision I have taken. MA: What exactly do you want to achieve with the software development skills? Toba: I want to reach the pinnacle of the IT industry, and in the shortest time possible. I am somewhat a latecomer though, yet I strive to be able to build software that is scalable, matching any standard across the world. MA: How has your life changed since gaining software development skills? Toba: It has changed tremendously. Since I completed my National Youth Service Corp program in October 2016, I got my first job as a software developer less than 2 weeks after my completion of Moat Academy trainings. The kind of training given at Moat Academy prepares us with the skills and requirements to function effectively in any software developer position you encounter. The confidence imparted to us is a plus. MA: What was your biggest fear before coming to Moat Academy and what do you feel about it now? Toba: How could I gather two years’ experience within ten weeks? I feared. It seemed impossible. I remember vividly during the introductory classes, I asked that question with skepticism. After checking the curriculum, the fear grew fatter. “ Abi this people dey ‘bobo’ us?” (English meaning: is this a joke?), I wondered. After intensive classes, assignments upon assignments, and projects, it became clearer: it was very achievable. Right now, the fear has turned to confidence today. MA: How will you describe your experience in Moat Academy? Toba: It was a lovely one. The knowledge imparted to us was standard. The hospitability was second to none. In fact everything we got out was a worth it, even worth more than we put in. I looked forward to every day. The environment was lively too. I made good friends with a lot of people. In fact, we still keep contacts till today. MA: What advice do you have for those coming into Moat Academy? Toba: Well, my advice to them is to be diligent. That’s all it takes. There is one thing I am very certain of; Moat Academy will do their best. The rest lies with you. What you make out of the training is a measure of how much efforts you put in. Give your best to life, in due season, life will give its best back to you. MA: What have been able to achieve with the training? Toba: I achieved a lot. At the end of the training, I was able to build a forum for engineers, where they can come together to help themselves through challenges in the industry. Too much for a 10 weeks trainee you think? Two weeks after finishing with the training, I landed a software developer position. I’m learning and growing everyday with industry experts now. Moat has set the foundation I lay my career on now. MA: What is your future outlook in software development industry? Toba: The IT world is growing every day. There are new technologies and software emerging every day that ease the way people live and Nigeria is part of this movement. There are lots of potentials and it is wise to join the train. Software development is growing and will continue to grow. Our next batch of training starting October 17, 2017, visit www.moatacademy.com. |
