modath remember I said this on the Aareonakakanfo thread where Yoruba issues were discussed

The civil service is just bloated for nothing. Some have come to see civil service as some form of welfare

whats the output of these civil service to the state productivity
T

The civil service may be over bloated for real, i totally agree that the Federal and State civil service is glorified welfare scheme but what option are there? Did the average Nigerian create the problem? They should be fired and their children will go hungry or what?

Everyone can not go into farming or trading, since the government have "outsourced" all industrial and manufacturing capacity to Asia, they should manage the "problem" they inadvertently created...

In sane countries, private sector is the employer of labour, all Nigeria has are banks, few real industries and some one man firms..

Where are the textile mills, flour mills, the dunlops, the Onward press, the AJ Sewards, Cybele etc?

Where are the industries that would have mopped up more than 75% of the people making the civil service a drain on the resources of the state?

This is a product of past horrible choices..

Shym3xx:
This argument has to be the most illogical/counterintuitive argument ever, since most of the proponents of this argument are fond to citing it only when pipelines are blown up, thus affecting the income/revenue the country generates from the oil sector. However, it seems they like feigning ignorance about the fact that environmental degradation via oil spillage and gas flaring has been happening in that region for decades. So, if you care that much about environmental degradation – why not critique the neglect that region has suffered from successive governments? Why cite that now when they’re demanding justice (rightfully so) and not during the different oil spillages by opportunistic oil companies? Why only care when revenue generation is affected? To tackle this issue objectively, you’ve to be open minded in your our outlook with a clear head. Fair enough, the militancy has more to do with self-interests than the actual interest of the people from that region. But that doesn’t negate the fact that the region is the most cheated in the country and, they deserve far more than they’re getting.

Also, the 2.2m barrel of oil Nigeria exports daily isn’t enough to cater to 180 million people and the earlier folks realise that, the better it would be for all of you. The owners of the oil deserve at least 50% of the revenue/income generated from it – while others need to look inwards for ways to maximise whatever potentials they’ve in their respective regions. The over-dependence on oil is counter-productive, hence the whole country is the way it’s. And the region that’s the most dependent on oil is the most backward region in the country. That’s not rocket science. Oil breeds a generation of lazy people/thinkers

You lot need to start critiquing objectively cos like MLK said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”. Let these people enjoy what God blessed them with.
Shy, I used to believe Niger Delta was deliberately being shafted till 2 people gave me two accounts of events they personally witnessed..

1. A friend works for a firm who as part of their CSR were to build a block of classrooms for elementary school kids for that community so the little ones won't have to walk far, He said they refused on grounds that the elders claimed their own children were too grown for primary school and the youth said they didn't have kids that will "enjoy" at the particular moment, Shy, they all decided to share the money and that was that...

2. My Sis lives in PH and is doing her PG studies in the state university, She told me of how one of her associates married to a local ppolitician told her of how a crowd insisted they'd rather take the cash for a road rehab as their immediate problem is cash in their pocket, that they can "manage" the road...

When they do dat athuh We know there is poverty in land, but is there no thought for anything but the present?....

I live for the day SW will be free to decide it's own pace, and prosperity but i want it achieved with minimal SW collateral damage... cool

However, some people introduced Unitary system, and also endorsed the mindless looting we experienced in the recent past, things now hard and they want out?? Selfish selfish, we will all "enjoy" the "good times" .. grin grin

but the attacks began shortly after an arrest warrant was issued for him that claimed the theft of money from government contracts to guard oil installations.

The offensive comes as the Avengers have mounted an increasingly fierce campaign targeting oil installations. In recent days, facilities belonging to the Dutch-British Shell company, Italy's Agip, and the U.S. oil giant Chevron have been targeted.
Nytimes put this caveat, Chevron is an American company, the hit on their facilities won't be applauded..

Politics › Bismarck Rewane Asks: Any Connection Between War On Corruption And ND Avengers? by modath(op): 8:25pm On May 30, 2016
Bismarck Rewane, a renowned economist, is bothered by the resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta region, wondering why the attacks on oil installations started after the current administration “stepped up its anti-graft war”.

Speaking on a special edition of Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, Rewane encouraged the government to focus more on intelligence gathering because the attacks could be a “massive conspiracy”.

“Who are the avengers and what are they avenging? The Niger Delta struggle was about self determination, resource control, about environmental pollution, all the way from Isaac Boro to Ken Saro Wiwa,” he said.

“The destruction of assets at this time happen to coincide with the step up on the anti-corruption war. Is there a link between the anti-graft war and the militancy? What is this all about? There’s a riddle that needs to be unravelled.”

Rewane said the attacks have been more disturbing because oil installations where Nigeria generates huge revenues have been the main targets.

He said the disruption in oil production is capable of affecting the economic programmes of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

“The reality is that the disruption of oil production and its impact on our fiscal revenue and our foreign exchange resources, on our exchange rate, and our external reserves is profound. Really huge!” he said.

“Now, what is more disturbing is that oil assets that have been disrupted are those where Nigeria gets it highest revenue, so the impact on the fiscal revenue of Nigeria is beyond comprehension.

“One asks the question: ‘Who are these people, and what do they want?’ Is this a proxy war for the politically disgruntled? Because this is a very elaborate attack, they go deep into the water, and they are well sophisticated. These are not people who are talking about amnesty.

“So, we need to talk about intelligence. There could be a massive conspiracy. This is crunch time for Nigeria. The last thing we need now as a bullet in our head is a drop in production.”

Analysing the different reactions that trailed the increase in the pump price of petrol under the previous and the present administrations, Rewane said while former President Goodluck Jonathan had “trust and fiscal deficits”, his successor had “a trust surplus and a fiscal deficit”.

Rewane explained that labour unions could not organise a successful strike under Buhari because of “trust surplus”, but advised the president to work on “fiscal deficit”.

“The reason why this time the strike on petroleum failed was because the president has what is called a trust surplus, but has a fiscal deficit. The combination of both made sure that everything failed,” he said.

“What Jonathan had was a trust deficit and a fiscal deficit. What is happening now is that because of the trust surplus, we’ve been able to right that but the trust surplus is being used and you have to build on that and you have to reduce that fiscal deficit as you go along, so there’s an equilibrium there.”
