Keshi and Saintfiet
The mind games between Coach Stephen Keshi and his Malawian counterpart, Tom Saintfeit ahead of the World Cup qualifier between the Super Eagles and the Flames of Malawi, took a new dimension yesterday when Saintfeit accused Keshi of racism.

Saintfiet argued that Keshi by calling him a ''White dude", has made racial remarks, which the world soccer governing body frowns at. The Belgian-born coach claims to have instructed his lawyers to make a formal complaint to FIFA.

He was employed by Malawi Football Association in their desperate bid to turn the tide against Nigeria in the group E World Cup qualification table. Saintfiet was employed by the Nigeria Football Federation as technical director, but his coming to Nigeria was scuttled by Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi and he sees victory against Nigeria as a sweet revenge for him.

"It is unacceptable that any person says these words - it is clear racism. It is 100% sure that my lawyers will lodge a complaint with Fifa," Saintfiet told BBC

Keshi who was reacting to Saintfiet's call for the September 7 match to be moved from Calabar, because of fear of terror attacks, was quoted as saying on Vox Africa Sports360:

"If he wants to talk to Fifa, he should go back to Belgium. He is not an African person, he is a white dude, he should go back to Belgium.

"I have never used any words like these to any coach. He has no right, who is he?

"All other countries play in Calabar. Calabar is one of the safest places in Nigeria… He is mad. I wish I could say it to his face."

Belgian Saintfiet told local media at the time that he was concerned about security because he claims "the UK's Foreign & Commonwealth Office says it is a no-travel area".

"Keshi's words create hate and aggression, and creates a risk ahead of the match in Calabar," Saintfiet added. "These comments are unacceptable and I am very sad about them.

"I will not say any bad words about Mr Keshi, nor Nigeria - I only spoke about moving the game.

"If Fifa takes racism seriously, then you have to take it seriously in both directions. If a European said something of this nature about an African, you would have a huge problem.

"I am against racism in all directions."

Keshi said yesterday that he viewed all the noise been made by Saintfiet as a distraction, adding that he will do all his talking in the pitch. But media officer of the Super Eagles, Ben Alaiya dismissed the accusations.

"Keshi is not a racist. How can he be when he played most of his football in Europe particulary Belgium where he was captain of Anderlecht, he was also captain of Cheleroi.

"Saintfient is just playing mind games, because he knows that the Eagles will beat Malawi anytime and anywhere."

After series of failed attempts by Malawi to get FIFA to take the crucial World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Malawi out of Calabar, Coach Stephen Keshi has vowed to silence the Flames for good with a thumping win on September 7.

Nigeria top their World Cup qualification group F table and need to avoid defeat against the Flames to progress to the final round, where they face a yet to be known team in a two-legged playoff for a berth in Brazil 2014.

Despite being aware that they have one foot in the playoff, the African champions are not ready to step their foot off the pedal when the Malawians come visiting because of the trouble they have made by going to FIFA to protest over the suitability of the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar to host the dicey match.

Speaking during the week, Keshi, who said that he was aware of the mind games being played by the Malawi Football Federation and Coach Tom Saintfeit to unsettle the Eagles warned that the Flames were going to face the full wrath of the Eagles on September 7.

"I think it is very clear what they (Malawi) have been trying to do. All they want is to distract us but their plan has failed and we on our part have vowed to do the talking on the pitch, with a convincing victory in Calabar.

"Calabar is a very secured place to play football, with nice environment and I was shocked that they could say that it was a security risk. The only thing we want to do now is to ensure that they are roundly beaten, so that they can learn to work harder and talk less", added Keshi.

Robert Mugabe has been sworn in for a seventh term in office as Zimbabwe's leader as Thursday was declared a public holiday to allow supporters of the 89-year-old to attend the inauguration.

The ceremony had been delayed by a court petition filed by his main rival, Morgan Tsvangirai, over allegations of widespread electoral fraud.

But the Constitutional Court dismissed the case, declaring Mr Mugabe's re-election "free, fair and credible".

Mr Mugabe won with 61% of the presidential vote against 34% for Mr Tsvangirai on 31 July.

The inauguration organisers have booked several international performing artists - from the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa and Jamaica. However, the MDC and its leader, outgoing Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, will not be attending, bitter about what they say was a "stolen, and rigged election".

Post-election rancour is not dying away. Both party leaders have been trading insults. It is likely to cascade down, polarising supporters and the nation alike.

Outgoing Prime Minister and opposition leader Mr Tsvangirai said he would not be attending the inauguration ceremony.

"Expecting Tsvangirai to attend the inauguration is like expecting a victim of robbery to attend a party hosted by the robber," his spokesman, Luke Tamborinyoka, told AFP.

'Fearless revolutionary' The BBC's Brian Hungwe in the capital, Harare, says there was an air of excitement at the national sports stadium ahead of the inauguration ceremony.

The US and UK have expressed concern over the official results granting victory to Mr Mugabe and his Zanu-PF party.

"I have grave concerns over the conduct of the election, and the flaws highlighted in the South African Development Community (Sadc) and African Union observation missions' initial assessments," UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said in a statement on Thursday.

"There is strong evidence that these elections fell short of Sadc's own guidelines and the Zimbabwean electoral law. As such, we are concerned about the potential implications for the region."

It was critical that reforms advanced under the power-sharing government were not lost, he added.

Mr Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) lost two court cases related to fraud claims in last month's disputed elections. Rulings were issued despite the MDC withdrawing its case saying it would not get a fair hearing.

Some 40 heads of state and government have been invited to attend the high-profile inauguration ceremony.

Once inaugurated, Mr Mugabe will serve another five-year term. Under the new constitution approved in a referendum earlier this year he will be able to serve another term after this.

Mr Mugabe served as Zimbabwe's first post-independence prime minister between 1980 and 1987, and has held office as president ever since.

Federal Polytechnic, Auchi ranked best in Africa

The Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, has been ranked as the best in Africa in the latest ranking of the best tertiary institutions in the World by Webometrics.

The development means that it is the best polytechnic in the country.

The latest ranking also showed that Auchi Polytechnic retained its position as the second best tertiary educational institution in Nigeria after the University of Ibadan.



In a chat with newsmen on Friday, Rector of the polytechnic, Dr. Philipa Idogho, attributed the feat to the hardwork and support from staff and students of the school that had ensured a peaceful academic environment in the last five years since she became the Rector.

Idogho expressed delight over the latest ranking, which she said has been as a result of consistent performance since 2010.

According to her “That the polytechnic has consistently been rated with the universities demonstrates the high standard of academic activities in the institution.” she said.

“The rating is a further challenge to the polytechnic’s management to work harder as being at the top is not as difficult as remaining at the top,” she added
