Another major breakthrough
was reported in the search for
a cure for AIDS.
After bone marrow
transplantation, two HIV-
infected men have no longer any
trace of the virus that causes
AIDS in their cells, researchers
report.
Lymphocytes are a type of white
blood cells and are a key part of
the immune system.
U.S. investigators suspect that
the bone marrow transplant,
together with the continuation
of antiretroviral therapy as a
result of the dramatic effects
evident eight months after
transplantation. They are
scheduled to present preliminary
findings Thursday at the
International AIDS Conference in
Washington, DC.
HIV patients receiving
antiretroviral therapy often get
"an undetectable viral load"
meaning no virus particles in
their blood. But they still have
latent HIV in their cells, and if
antiretroviral therapy was
stopped, it could reactivate
latent HIV.
Because they had no traces of
HIV in their white blood cells is
an indication that the "pool" of
latent HIV may have been
eliminated, the researchers
believe.
At this point, researchers are far
from saying these patients are
cured. However, the findings are
"exciting," said Dr. Savita Pahwa,
director of the Center for AIDS
Research at the University of
Miami Miller School of Medicine,
who was not involved in the
study.
"Each clue that is obtained that it
is possible to eliminate latent HIV
must be investigated," she said.
"The elimination of the reserve
HIV is the key to a cure," said
Pahwa. She stressed it would
only be possible to say that
these patients were "functionally
cured" if the virus will not
reactivate when the patients
were off antiretroviral therapy.

It was reported few weeks ago
that the Association of Nigerian
Prostitutes (ANP), the umbrella
body of commercial sex workers
in the country vowed to declare
one week free sex should the
Super Eagles of Nigeria return
home with the African Cup of
Nations trophy.
We also exclusively reported that
the association sent over 113
members to South Africa to
cheer the Eagles to victory in the
final cracker against the Stallions
of Burkina Faso, which Nigeria
won by a lone goal.
It was gathered that shortly
after the victory last Sunday, one
of the ringleaders approached a
top member of the Nigeria
Football Federation (NFF) who
was in South Africa to watch the
match about their promise.
"He chased me and asked me to
go to hell," the lady told our
reporter on telephone.
When asked if the promise was
just for the Eagles or the entire
country, the visibly angry lady
replied: "Either for the Eagles or
the country, he doesn't have any
right to tell me to go to hell, we
are human beings. We will send
in our press statement shortly,"
she added.
A statement made available to us
on Sunday and signed by the
General Secretary, Jessica Elvis
reads in part.
"The Association of Nigerian
Prostitutes (ANP) wishes to

just like every other Nigerian.
Shortly after the victory on
Sunday, one of our leaders met a
top member of the Glass House
in South Africa and informed
him of our planned 'free booz'
for the Eagles when they return
to the country, but he outrightly
rejected our offer. He told us to
'GO TO HELL and GET A LIFE' that
the Eagles played with passion
and not because of our 'stupid'
promise.
We want to register our
disappointment over the way
we were turned down after our
full support for the national
team.
We shall continue to offer our
support even as they prepare to
face the world next year in
Brazil," the statement added.

when he likened his boys to
that of 1994 squad before the
2013 Africa Cup of Nations
hosted by South Africa. He was
roundly vilified for daring to
compared his 'amateur' team
with the all-conquering 1994
set.
Keshi had on
Monday, January 14
in a chat with
Supersport.com at the team's
camp in Faro, Portugal said that,
"many Nigerians don't know
how good this team is. I see
great potentials in them and
they can go places," adding that
"in Emenike I see a player who
can be like Rashidi Yekini and
Godfrey Obaobona will grow in
his position".
2013 Eagles Squad Shortly after
Keshi's comment went viral, it
was received with knocks from
some people including his

Nations and the FIFA World Cup

Rufai recalled: "Remember, 1994

national team since Libya '82.
We were in Cote d'Ivoire '84,

and Senegal '92 before Tunisia

The present crop of players have
to be there for some time to be
compared to our team."
Apart from experience, which
Rufai said comes with time, the
former goalkeeper said, "during
our time, we played a lot of
matches, our league was good
and the competition for shirts in
the national team was stiffer. We
went through a lot to get to the
national team."
He noted that the Eagles
preparing for the Nations Cup in
South Africa were an upcoming
team that need encouragement
and could not be compared with
1994 set.

Jonathan to miss AFCON final, sends high-powered delegation to motivate Eagles

Despite promising the players and officials of the Super Eagles, that he would be in South Africa, if they qualified for the finals of the AFCON, President Goodluck Jonathan, will instead send a delegation to represent him on Sunday.

This was confirmed by the presidential spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, who tweeted that the president will be in London and Paris for official engagements, but has sent representatives to cheer on the team.

Abati also revealed that members of the ‘transformed Super Eagles‘, will be hosted to a dinner reception on February 12 in Abuja.

He wrote: “President Jonathan sends high-powered delegation to South Africa to support the Super Eagles ahead of AFCON 2013 final on Sunday.

“Delegation led by Senator David Mark, incls Gov. Peter Obi, Gov. Isa Yuguda, Prof. V. Onwuliri, Navy Capt. Olubolade & Amb. Bashir Yuguda.

“Pres. Jonathan due to official commitments in London & Paris won’t be in Jo’burg to lead cheering for Super Eagles as he would have wished.

“He has charged the delegation to ensure the S/Eagles are properly motivated & in best possible spirits to win a resounding victory on Sun”

Pres. Jonathan will host the TRANSFORMED SUPER EAGLES to a dinner reception on Tues. 12 Feb. at the Banquet Hall, State House, Abuja, 7 pm.
