safarigirl: Wida you Nairaland. For this review, we will be traveling to the creeks of the Niger Delta and exploring themes of domestic abuse, militancy, strained familial relationships, manhood among others.
Hide your daddies ladies and gentlemen, because someone is trying to commit patricide. This one is quite the ride, so, I will start the boat now, and y'all can hop in while we sail the waters. Fear not, I already appeased the spirits of Oshimmiri with Fanta.
Producers: Native Media Director: Courage Obayuwana Writer: Priye Diri Where to Watch: Prime Video Run Time: 2 hrs.
Synopsis: A frustrated son, sets out to order a hit on his troubled father.
Review:
Like earlier stated, this movie is quite the ride, and I am particularly excited by it because it ticks a major box for me, as regards telling Nigerian stories outside of Lagos and Abuja. But Kill Boro is not brilliant because it took a road less traveled by being set in Niger Delta, rather, it is brilliant because it tells a simple, relatable story with an authenticity that is scarcely explored and tackles the complexity of a father-son relationship and the difficulties in being a man.
We are introduced first to the titular character, Boro (Asaya), a struggling mechanic, who's trying to stay out of the gangster life he retired from, despite entwining himself in some dangerous financial dealings. Boro wants to remain on the straight and narrow because he promised his wife he was never going back to that life, but times are hard and a man is also trying to survive. He is solicited by his ex-colleague in the militancy business, Jaguar (Yibokoko), to waive his debt in exchange for one last attack, Boro wants no parts though, and leaves with the noose that is his debt, tighter around his neck.
Next up, the man who will want him dead- or rather, boy, Elijah (Ogboruche), his son. Elijah is a pre-teen/teenage boy, who has found a father figure in Bossman (Ojefua) and a second family in fellow streetrunners, Lydia "Lyd" (Uzero) and Denzel (Dappa), both older, dread-wearing affiliates of Bossman. Together, they keep the streets free of miscreants and try to make Azuama, a little more habitable for its poor.
A honourable job it is, and Elijah is quite the smart and intelligent kid, despite dropping out of school because his father cannot afford fees. When Elijah isn't helping Bossman keep the streets clean, he's either with his good, female friend, Orabere (Osagie), or his mother, Boma (Okojie).
Elijah can't stand his father though. Boro returns home drunk and hits both he and his mother, he's a menace to them. Boro is a bad man, and after listening in on a conversation he really shouldn't have overheard, Elijah decides Boro has to die. Only problem is, who will bell the cat?
I really enjoyed this movie. I liked the introduction of conflict, I liked how the story was well told. I liked the humanity of the characters, the exploration of their flaws and imperfections. I enjoyed the acting performances from all the characters, especially the child actors, Kosiso Ogboruche (Elijah) and Beloved Osagie (Orabere), they held their own in a stellar lineup. Phillip Asaya was brilliant as a struggling father, Ini-Dima's portrayal of an understanding wife was quite possibly one of my favourite performances from her ever, and Ojefua as Bossman was tame and firm. Blessing Uzero brought a needed intensity to her performance as Lyd and even though Michael Dappa had fewer lines and appearances than the others mentioned, he held his own as Denzel, and looked absolutely gorgeous doing it. Michael, babe, call me
The cinematography was well done, I particularly like a scene where Elijah finally told Orabere of his plan to kill his father, with a church being the backdrop of this confession. The setting is in the city of Port Harcourt, the language used is a mixture of PH pidgin, English, Ijaw and Igbo.
One thing that probably made this movie so authentic, was that most of the key cast and crew were Niger Deltans. Someone mentioned some months back that she prefers when the actual Indigenes of a region tell their story, and I finally understood that sentiment with this movie. I compared it to another movie set in the Niger Delta with some cast and crew that weren't Indigenes of the region and found that Kill Boro had a little more soul to it, more authenticity and quite possibly, Niger Deltans will prefer this portrayal to the somewhat controversial one from the other movie (No, I will not mention it because we don't pit two bad beeches against each other )
But once again, I have to go back to the performances. Between the performances and the writing, I don't even know which most impressed me, but I suppose one needed the other to work. The vulnerability of the characters was beautifully done, the naivety of Elijah, even while he desperately wanted to be seen as the true protector of his family was well thought-out and portrayed, his grit was also interesting.
I don't think I have enough words to explain how much watching each of these characters felt like watching actual people we may have all encountered at various times in our lives. This is possibly the first movie I have seen in a long time, if ever, where, there was domestic violence and while I do not condone it, I understood the struggles of the character exerting it.
As with every production, not everything will go right, and there may be moments where you may just find yourself saying, "Why can't you people just tell this boy what's going on?", but when it's all done, you will realise that in real life, this is pretty much how he would have been handled.
This movie had so much heart and soul, it is a truly phenomenal movie that explores a theme that many men will possibly find kinship with. It is an authentically Nigerian story, with a universal message.
Shout out to the writer, Priye Diri and the director Courage Obayuwana. I hope to see a few people involved in this movie accepting an award in months to come. This is my favourite movie from Nollywood 2024 releases so far, and it can only get better.
It has been a long time since I had a different category for this in my movie reviews, but a line in this movie has stayed with me since I watched it, and it is an absolute quotable quote, so....
Quotable Quote: "Na Hard Times Dey Make Man Hard"- Pharmo, (Kill Boro)
Rating: 8.5/10
Watch or Bin: Watch.
Have you seen Kill Boro? What did you think of it?
Esinwaju: Guy! You are a gem!! The game was more psychological than tactical. Even if we were going to defend, we should have done so with conviction but our boys were overwhelmed from the blast of the whistle. Too many fouls in the opening minutes. Osimhen losing is head, Nwabali getting into altercations. Even the coach lost his head and got booked. A psychological mess. That match was lost way before kickoff.
it was like a scripted play, dem jus write everybody scripte say see ur part no over do ur part just stay within the lines 1.Ola Aina was palying asif he dey fear 2.Nwabili wey suppose dey calm dey fight, collect yellow, the 2 goals are all as a result of his bad positioning, intentional or not we leave am with God 3. Iwobi, dat one na from day 1 4.Jose Paseiro...
KosiGee: I used to be a Djokovic fan till I started seeing him throwing and smashing his rackets when he is frustrated, hurling tennis balls about nearly causing harm to people around him…
Very sore and bad loser he is..
I’m happy for Daniil, it’s his first grand slam title and he did in style. Djokovic has done well, 20 grand slam titles, all leading in earnings with about $151million, he only want to surpass Federer and Nadal. He will get there but he has to wait a little longer. He is not getting that 21 on a platter.
…Congrats to Emma Raducanu, 18 years, just finished writing her GCSE, grand slam champion and $2.5m richer.
Nigeria need to invest in sports and it’s youths …not destroying opportunities. Croatia, Poland, Russia, Serbia etc all realised the huge potentials and opportunities in a sport like tennis…they have academies and tennis courts all over and their kids take up the rackets much the same way Nigerian kids show enthusiasm and play football at deserted roads or every available spaces. Provide these facilities to Nigerian youths and see a new orientation in thinking and career pathway.
For that action he has apologized and the Tennis board has fined/ that period, Nole was going through some personal crisis/he came out of it stronger sweeping all grand slam on his way except the US Open/he is still no1 and am a great fan of his character/ am not taking it away from Daniil/next Tennis season watch out for him winning more Slams/ Nigeria invest in sport, hmmm ok/Doctors don dey leave/very soon teachers will start leaving naija for greener pastures

OfficialIce: Same girl that used to sit on Kidd's lap and be holding and rubbing him up and down. Doesn't want to show her emotions on live TV??
She likes Kidd clearly. Look at the way they flow during convos, I've never seen she and Ozo make those kind of free conversations. Building the wall shows how insecure she feels around Ozo. Why didn't she just use her mouth and tell him she doesn't want him all over her??
Maybe she likes Ozo and is trying to punish him for choosing Dora the other time as his DHOH but if she doesn't stop ignoring him then he'll notice it and pull away. Na this one make many girls never marry.
Even Neo too.... She flows with Neo and laughs a lot with him but rarely laughs with Ozo or you want to deny all these.....
Ozo approach was direct and intense and I don't think she has ever been in a relationship that start like the way Ozo approach her, I heard her says all her relationship started as friendship and gradually progress, but in Ozo's case he came in direct while she was trying to build it on friendship, so for her it's a new experience and she is handling it the best way she can without hurting Ozo's feeling and also remember she still has the real world to deal with when the show is over My 1kobo contribution

The voters will spend their hard-earned money to vote, then the housemates will have the final power to evict one or two from bottom four. This only means the first among the bottom four is not even safe while the person that comes last among them could be safe..abegii.
I am a married man with a child. We did our child's dedication few days ago online and my wife is angry that I should have spent more to entertain our neighbors after giving them soft drinks.

nawtyme: The National Youth Service Corps has dismissed the claim by the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, that taking political office had compensated for his deliberate refusal to take part in the compulsory national service.
The spokesperson of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Adenike Adeyemi, said the minister’s juxtaposition of holding an elective office and undergoing the obligatory national service is an error. Since PREMIUM TIMES busted his cover as an NYSC dodger, on Thursday, Mr Shittu has been advancing the argument that his election into the Oyo State House of Assembly immediately after his studies substitutes the mandatory service.
Lawyers who spoke to this newspaper on the issue said Mr Shittu’s justification for skipping the scheme is flawed and ludicrous.
Mrs Adeyemi concurred with the explanation of the lawyers who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES on the unmistakable cases of exemption allowed by the law in Section 2 of the NYSC Act.
The referenced section exempted only four categories of Nigerians from the national service.
Those exempted are those who graduated after their 30th birthday, those who have served in the military or the police for at least nine months and staff of intelligence agencies. The last set of those eligible for exemption are persons who have obtained a national honour.
Speaking to Tribune newspaper, the NYSC spokesperson said the provisions of the Act are very clear, and there are no exceptions for any person like Mr Shittu who became a lawmaker at the age of 26. She said “Serving in the National (or state) Assembly is not one of them (conditions for exemption from national service)”.
“You have read the Act and you can see the circumstances where someone is exempted, you analyse it if he [Shittu] was exempted duly or there is a reason why he should have served. But the Act is very straightforward on the grounds for not coming up to serve.
“If you are a graduate locally trained or foreign trained, as long as you graduate before the age of 30, you are expected to serve. Whether foreign or locally trained, the law is the same. Our youths should be rightly guided that if you were able to complete your studies and as of the date of graduation, you are under 30, you are eligible to serve,” the NYSC spokesperson said. Mrs Adeyemi insisted that the NYSC law gives no preferential treatment to Nigerians other than those exempted by Section 2 of the Act, emphasising that “The NYSC was set up to mobilise all eligible Nigerian youths. The Act does not talk about VIPs or children of VIPs. Anyone who is a Nigerian youth, who has a first degree and under the age of 30 must serve, the issue of VIPs or their children does not apply.
“However, if there is any reason why a corps member needs a concession, the corps member applies and concession is given, for example, for marital reasons and on health grounds. Everyone is treated the same and where concessions are to be given, it is treated. So, VIPs or children of VIPs do not come into the Act and we do not look at that,” she said. Legal position
Lawyers who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES on the Shittu scandal said the minister is in the breach of the NYSC law for skipping the national service.
“His membership of the state assembly is not the same as national service,” said Huwaila Mohammed, a Kano-based practitioner. “He needs to serve, because the section of the law dealing with exemption did not include political office holders like him.”
Another lawyer, Abdul Mahmud, agreed with Ms Mohammed’s position, saying the minister “is a dodger who is in breach of the law”.
He said by the provision of Section 12 of the NYSC Act, Mr Shittu ought to have presented his certificate of national service before he was cleared as minister. “The provision is clear,” Mr. Mahmud said. “It says (you must serve) before you get any job in the federation.” Mr Mahmud, who chairs the Abuja-based pressure group, Public Interest Lawyers League (PILL), said Mr Shittu’s “case is worse than that of Kemi Adeosun because he deliberately refused to serve”.
“If we assume as a member of the Oyo House he (Mr Shittu) served, did it not defeat objective 4 (b) stated in Section 1 (4) (b) of the NYSC Act? Members serve in states other than their own,” he said.
The lawyer said Mr Shittu should be arrested immediately by the police and made to face the law. “All positions he has held are illegal and he should return all monies he earned from those posts to government coffers,” Mahmud said
