Why should choosing people to lead us ever have something to do with religion or tribe? That means we are all agents of intolerance.

PoliticsWhich Way Nigeria? by Mohdadutse(op): 6:44am On May 07, 2013
On the 1st October 1960, the British Union Jack was
lowered and the green white green flag was raised
up. On that day joy reign supreme all over the geo-
polical entity referred to today as Nigeria. The
concept Nigeria is part of the colonial heritage
created by the mistress of Lord Lugard, a colonial
war lord notorious for pacification of Nigeria. Nigeria
means Niger Area.
On Independence Day, hopes were high as the
founding fathers, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi
Awolowo and Ahmadu Bello emerged as successors
to the departing colonialists. The trio has played
great roles in the evolution of the new nation at
various levels and were even holding transitional
power before independence. Even though Awolowo
advocated for 'let's forget our differences as a
people and forge ahead to build a new nation',
Ahmadu Bello believed that differences cannot be
forgotten but 'let us know our differences so that we
can build relations around it"
No doubt Nigeria is not only diverse but multi-
cultural, religious and ethnic. There are over two
hundred and fifty ethnic nationalities with so many
religions and diverse people's with numerous culture,
traditions, folklores, languages etc.
The founding fathers of Nigeria concentrated on
building a new nation but from regional perspectives.
It is a known fact that no of them could be blamed
for non performance but their crime may be that
they put their regional interest over and above
national interest. Although, some of us still believe
that Iam first a member of my ethnic group before
been a member of a geo political creation whether
Local Government, state, region or and the nation.
This line of reasoning cannot be faulted objectively
but rhetorically with the view only to mislead. Many
have equated their desire to build a viable Nigeria
from the American evolutionary process, even to the
extend of borrowing the political system. This theory
is bereft of sound knowledge of the social and
historical components of the two nations. America as
a nation is built on consensus of people's from
different places all over Europe with common
predicaments as either exiles or deportees or
refugees. While Nigeria is a culturally oriented society
made up of people's with established languages,
cultures and traditions over years, therefore it
cannot be compared with the American social
system. Preferably, China may be a more acceptably
for such experiment because of similarities in so
many things.
The story of the giant of Africa after 52 years is full
of hopelessness. Nothing appears to be within the
focus of the reasons for the struggle for
independence. Many Nigerians today will preferred
Nigeria under colonial administration than our
contemporary rulers. It is not unpatrotism to reason
that way considering how things have decayed.
Education, agriculture, health, water resources were
the priorities of our founding fathers. In fact,
scholarship schemes were competitively pursued so
as to re enforced human capacity development. Free
education for all was first established in the then
western region by Awolowo which latter became
regional policies after independence and was
vigorously pursued. Sadly, beneficiaries of these
selfless legacies destroyed it for personal
aggrandizement while they continue to eulogize
these great leaders score cards. None of them can
account for the failure of the state of affairs today.
Even though Nigeria went through turbulent
democratic experiments the 1999 variety has
witnessed some degree of stability. It has been rated
as the worst of all because of so many factors.
Although it is a democracy, it stands unique in all
ramifications for abysmal attention to critical
national issues. Since the inception of this
dispensation things graduates from bad to worse like
symptoms of insanity.
The degree of failure in leadership is gradually
becoming a norm. Despite the huge resources
accruing to the nation, Nigerians live like refugees
feeding on either one or even sometimes zero square
meals yet others live reckless abundance. Our
educational system has not only collapsed but are
now breeding grounds for potential criminals because
Nigeria is the only country that manufacture criminals
through unconscious socialization process. Stealing of
public funds is gradually been legitimize and not too
long will corruption be made criteria for
appointment in public offices. Unemployment with
its excruciating trauma on the younger generations
receives mere lips service from the government.
Consequently, arms carrying is now the only
employment for the youths as protest for super
imposition of injustice by the advance generation. Of
concern is the fact that there is no practical
definition of who is a youth. The NYSC scheme
recognizes 30 years as the age limit while elective
offices require 35 years but in practice a youth is
somebody above 60 years because the national
youth leader of the ruling party is said to be 61, so
can there be any youth younger than him, what's a
hypocrisy?
There is no potable water, electricity, roads and even
food to eat. We can go on and on.
The expectations of Nigerians from the present
leadership has been squandered because the reasons
for non performance has been that Mr President
inherited some of these national problems. The
questions is when did he realizes these problems
before or after taking over power? Now that the
President who was Vice President before assuming
power has discovered that these problems existed
before him what efforts has he been doing? To me
this is a case of a lazy workman blaming his tools
which is shameful looking at Mr President's initial
philosophy, 'fresh air' which has metarmophosed into
'transformation agenda'.
The driving ideology of contemporary Nigerian
political system is religious and ethic sentiments. The
failure of leadership can be explain by it. "Oh the
Muslims are frustrating my efforts to govern well'
but they cannot frustrate the efforts of public
officials to loot. "The North created boko haram to
destabilize Nigeria because they have lost power yet
the king ping of boko haram who has been indicted
by government white paper is said to live in one of
the presidential guest houses with convoy more than
that of a seating Governor. Why has Mr president
failed to implement Ambassador Galtimari's report
2009 which indicted the former governor of Borno
state, is this the North that is also frustrating him?
Are the Northern Christians faring better under
Goodluck's administration? Certainly, not and the
Northern Christians have not have it as bad as like
this in any political epoch. Sadly, the Christians
leaders who participate in looting the treasury and
owns aircrafts kept deceiving the impoverished
follower ship to believe that the failure of leadership
is attributed to religious sentiment. All these are
divide and rule antics. Whenever they are looting
they are neither Christians nor Muslims but when we
demand for stewardship they tell us that Muslims or
Christians are frustrating their efforts. Can anybody
tell me the tribe of poverty or the religion of
hunger? These are the common attributes of the
poor, therefore, Nigeria expects nothing from Mr
President less than performance, we are tired of cow
and bull stories of failures. Perform first then we may
trust you with the future, but for now you are yet to
justify our mandate. Why way Nigeria?
PoliticsThe Nigerian Police Is Ill-equipped, Simple-sule Lamido by Mohdadutse(op): 9:37pm On May 04, 2013
Obviously there were some lapses in the security arrangement, it is very clear. I will meet with the police and other security organisations to identify the lapses and forestall future occurrence. Above all the Nigerian Police is ill-equipped simple. The police is simply lacking in all the support equipment; armoury and, even, the normal commitment. There is no way the police could stand armed robbers, who come with more sophisticated weapons.

PoliticsWho Is Sule Lamido? by Mohdadutse(op): 6:59pm On Apr 30, 2013
His Excellency Alh.
(Dr.) Sule Lamido
con, Governor of
Jigawa State was
born on August 30,
1948, at Bamaina
Village in Birnin Kudu
Local Government
Area of Jigawa State.
Western education
began for the
homeboy at Birnin
Kudu Primary School in 1955. In 1962, Sule Lamido
entered Barewa College , Zaria , even as he battled
the tide against western education in his area.
Pursuing western education against the background
of this tide and that of a typically affluent,
arrogant and politically confident Kano Province
lad was a daunting challenge but Lamido graduated
in December 1966.
Based on re¬cruitment drive persuasion prior to his
exit from Barewa College, Sule Lamido opted to
train as a Railway Engineer. But the practical side of
the training that took place at the Permanent Way
Train-ing School, Zaria, proved unattractive to the
budding engineer who opted out altogether,
especially as the promise of travelling to and
training as a real En¬gineer in India no longer
seemed forth¬coming. Disenchanted with Railway
Engineering and denied parental approval for a
military career, Sule Lamido opted for the Nigerian
Police. Although he got the chance, he missed it,
having gone on to other things when the second
signal calling them up came. The first signal to that
effect halted their resumption at the Police
College , Ikeja, as a result of the threat being
issued by the Eastern Regional Governor, Colonel
Emeka Ojukwu.
In 1969, Sule Lamido anchored at the Nigeria
To¬bacco Company, Zaria , first as Quality Control
Officer in charge of ascertaining quality of mixing
and packaging. Today, he is fond of saying that:
"Throughout that one year, every cigarette
manufactured in Zaria must have passed under my
strict quality control supervision".
Later at NTC, Zaria , he became Zonal Salesman,
first for the North West areas of Gusau, and
Sokoto, before moving to take charge of the
North East, covering present Taraba, Bauchi,
Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States . Much later, he
took over in present Benue and Plateau areas,
thereby ending up with intimate knowledge of the
entire Northern region of Nigeria. In 1972, Sule
Lamido left the NTC for Christlieb as Northern Field
Man-ager and later Brand Manager (Provisions). As
the Brand Manager, Sule Lamido made all the
company's imports as well as opened new offices
of the company which sold Thermos flasks, Quaker
products, Heinz prod-ucts, Cornflakes; Peppermint,
Vaseline and Phensic (on behalf of Beecham). He
had, in this position, the privilege of going to all the
island local govern¬ment areas of Rivers and Cross
River States through Itigidi, everywhere in present
Delta and Edo States , so that today, he is one of
the few politicians who can say he had been able
to appre¬ciate Nigeria ever before becoming a
politician.
In 1987, Sule Lamido left Christlieb to come of age,
business wise. That year, he founded Bamaina
Holding Company which is now Bamaina Company
Limited, involved in textile, oil and, as he himself
puts it, just about anything that brings money. In
1979, he became a federal legislator on the
platform of the radical populist People's
Redemption Party, (PRP). In the Federal House of
Representatives, he was a member of the House
Business, Account, Water Resources and Works
Committees. When it was time to form parties
under Babangida Transition Pro-gramme, Sule
Lamido was among the social democrats who put
together the People's Solidarity Party, (PSP), one
of the thirteen (13) political parties that were
disbanded by the military regime in favour of two
parties -the National Republican Convention, NRC,
and the Social Democratic Party, (SDP), in 1989.
Sule Lamido was elected the pioneer Chairman of
the Party (SDP) for Kano State . With the creation
of Jigawa out of the old Kano State , Lamido
became again the (pioneer Chairman and later the
governorship aspirant until the then Military
President, General Ibrahim Babangida disqualified
him along with seven others. In late 1992, Sule
Lamido was elected the National Secretary of the
Social Democratic Party, (SDP). He was thus a core
actor in the victory of Chief M. K. O. Abiola in the
1993 presidential election which was, however,
annulled in contradictory junta power politics.
In 1994, after the two parties were disbanded
when late General Abacha took over government,
Sule Lamido became the Chairman of the Board of
Directors of the Nigerian Agricultural and Co-
operative Bank, NACB, his first major political
appointment in life.
In 1995, he went onto the National Constitutional
Conference as an ap-pointee of the Federal
Military Government but the seeming romance
between the politician and the military terminated
too abruptly once the politician became a critic of
self- succession, particularly as a member of the
G-18, the opposition platform of the most notable
Northern politicians, whose rejection of General
Sani Abacha, destabilised the latter's self-succession
project. It culminated in his arrest and detention in
early 1998 by the regime. When Sule Lamido was
released from detention in mid-l 998, he rejoined
his political group which had, by now, moved into
the national platform called the G-34.
Subsequently, the group formed the People's
Democratic Party, PDP, under which he contested
gover¬norship of Jigawa State but lost in very
controversial circumstances.
In June 1999, Sule Lamido was nominated for
ministerial appointment by President Olusegun
Obasanjo and subsequently confirmed by the
Senate. He emerged the Foreign Affairs Minister on
June 30, 1999, when the ministers were sworn in.
In late 2003, Lamido returned to his native Jigawa
state after serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs
from 1999-2003. He went straight into opposition
leadership against the ANPP Government the
National political Conference. In late 2007, he
clinched the gubernatorial candidacy of the
People's Democratic Party, (PDP) emerging the
governor on May 29th, 2007. His regime has been
defined, more or less by the introduction of a social
security regime of a monthly stipend to the most
physically challenged persons in the state. His thus
becomes the first government in the entire history
of Nigeria to formally and democratically
operationalise a social security regime thereby
demonstrating (1) that poverty can be seriously
attacked and actually eradicated (2) that lack of
resources is not the real reasons for governmental
inability to attack poverty on a serious scale given
that Jigawa is officially, the poorest state in the
Federal Republic of Nigeria and (3) the strategic
role of compassion as an element of power.
Lamido regime thereby re-opened the debate on
the moral and ideological foundations of power in
the social transformation of Nigeria and things may
never be the same. Sule Lamido, the father of
eleven children, is married to Hajiya Amina Lamido
and Hajiya Maryam Lamido

the Jigawa State
Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has begun to speak
in parables as his body language during the signing
into law of the 2013 budget is instructive
It was at the signing of the 2013 Budget held at
the Conference Hall of the Jigawa Government
House, Dutse. But something was obviously
unusual; the Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, had
tactfully begun to bid the state farewell. This was
palpable as he made reflections on the number of
years that have passed by, how he started and
elevated the status of the state to where it is
today.
For him, Jigawa is now a cynosure of all eyes,
especially when compared to other states created
along side with it in 1991 by the General Ibrahim
Babangida administration. Pondering the remaining
two years left for him to tidy up his contract with
the people of Jigawa, Lamido picked up his pen
and officially signed the budget into law with an
estimated N115bn and other documents brought
before him by the Commissioner of Finance, Alhaji
Nasiru Umar Roni.
The Governor recalled with nostalgia , six years
ago when he assumed office and that he was able
to sign the budget for the sixth time elicited mixed
feelings, more so for one who may be seeing the
two years as somewhat insufficient to round off.
As Governor when he newly assumed office, he did
not waste time questioning why the state remained
backward; rather, he embarked on that which he
knew would impact positively on the lives of the
people. "This could help those coming behind us to
also emulate what we are able to put down as
solid foundation for the state within the period of
our stewardship," he said, reminiscing.
Most of those who listened to him went home with
the notion that the man was indirectly pointing an
end to his second term and at the same time,
craving for a successor with foresight who would
be concerned with the yearnings and aspirations of
the people as his administration.
In a hushed voice that moved some of his disciples
to tears after interpreting what he was driving it,
Lamido prayed for a worthy successor come 2015.
His choice words, that day, ran contrary to what
typified him when he newly assumed office as the
Governor in 2007. Apart from the affection and
pity that the speech evoked, the wordings directly
weakened the nerves.
But there were posers from this. They include: why
did Lamido sound more like a clergyman contrary
to his usual political sagacity and braggadocios,
typical of a politician of his standing. Those who
knew him could tell that his statement did not
come with the usual fire that characterized the
Governor's speech whenever he spoke.
Yet, it was nothing puzzling to those acquainted
with the concept power and its capacity to make
things happen. That power is transient was the
crux of his teaching that day. The reality, however,
is that Lamido may have shown a rare example in
the understanding of power. By consciously
psyching himself to leaving office whenever his
time is up, he was believed to have taken a critical
step in the proper use of power.
Mindful of the precept that no matter how good a
leader is, he would one day leave power, especially
from an office tenured. Even if not, death might
come some day to permanently take him off the
stage.
Many of the people who spoke to THISDAY at
the venue of the event confirmed that the brief
remarks made by the governor during the signing
of the 2013 was an indication of the fact that
Lamido's tenure is just about to round off and that
his main concern is a successor among the rank
and file that are warming up.
Even then, emphasis has also been on the fact that
whoever would succeed Lamido must be someone
in his good book because anything short of that
would be politically unrealistic.
"I am quite aware that working with me needs
little patience because of my nature. But certainly
once there is tolerance in the way I go about my
things, success shall be recorded at the end of the
day."
This, again, has brought to the fore, Lamido's
alleged presidential ambition which is fast gaining
grounds on the turf. The rumoured Lamido/Rotimi
Amaechi ticket has become a major distraction in
the polity. Already, their posters and banners are
everywhere including vehicles and strategic
locations in the country.
But there are those who believed that Lamido
might be challenged to throw his hat in the ring if
the president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, decides to
seek re-election. To think that Lamido is seen as
ever ready to face a bigger challenge makes it
plausible. It may not also be unconnected to this
calculation that the PDP Board of Trustees
Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih, visited Jigawa State
recently.
It is public knowledge that Anenih begged Lamido
not to leave PDP for another party, adding he was
confident Lamido as a highly principled person
would not mull such an option, considering the role
he played in the formation of PDP.
But Lamido's response was not far-fetched. Hear
him: "No matter what, I am going to be in PDP. I
cannot labour and give birth to a child and then
abandon the same child for another or leave my
house for another person. I prefer to remain in
the PDP. After all, is it not the so called APC that
is calling us all sorts of names? What then are they
going to do with thieves, hooligans and or rogues
in their party or are the people they are accusing
out of PDP or what?"
For those who can interpret Lamido's utterances
and demeanor, it is about a game which keeps no
permanent friends but maintains a steady interest.
Therefore, it is only instructive that the PDP
handles the grievances of the governors with care
or faces the consequences of their decision.
Besides, if political heavyweights like the late
Mohammad Abubakar Rimi and former vice-
president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, once dumped
the PDP for other parties, before retracing their
steps, the indications are that nothing is impossible,
given the present scenario. To that extent, no one
would be amazed if the like of Lamido joins forces
with like-minds to fight a common political enemy,
if only doing so would be profiting to their
calculation and aspiration.

“Why i am transforming jigawa state“ sule lamido.
Jagoran talakawa started by askin me what i
understand by sule lamido. I answer him a political
icon, to me and my personal knowledge about him
was not well answered now the best answer to his
question in my context is; if i dont know Sardauna
and Mal Aminu Kano and people refer Abubakar
Rimi and Sule lamido as their copiers and now Rimi
was no more this simply implies Sule Lamido is
Sardauna, Mal aminu Kano and Abubakar Rimi.
He accepted my language that that he is a political
icon.
The question why are you transformin jigawa state?
He then started, You know To give a base for future
renewals. I am doing my job as a governor, a public
servant not any thing more. For example the state
secretariate and the high court is to give the office
holders impression to workhard, if a criminal is to be
taken to our new court from far his impression will
be... If a LGA chairman is elected, taken to the new
LGA government house, his thinking/morale is
updated and transformed.
Now a 50 year jigawa road map about to be
implemented will guide who ever will succeed me to
continue in the next 50 years jigawa will compete the
next best develop state in the world. We are
investing massively in educational sector to help in
achieving the jigawa road map.
Finally, i have no intention of imposing any of my
people as my successor, jigawa decide.
