Zidane was not supposed to be long term so it is not like the board could control him. He was supposed to steady the ship and see out the remainder 6 months while Perez found a new Manager but Zidane ended up winning the UCL.

So the reality is, that lineup against Barca that RM got walloped 4-0 was strange because everyone knew that was not the team he had used prior. It was clear there was some overarching influence in the team selection and Beni hinted at it after leaving Madrid. (He signed a gag order so could not go full throttle on the exposé).

Zidane wasn't given more control he took control and that's what good managers do, they let the board know they know what they are doing otherwise the board can as well manage the team themselves.

benitez case was a simple Moyes scenario where he left himself to be overwhelmed into making poor choices.

His not being given a free reign and being controlled by the board was actually what lead to his failure but this was a blessing from the club as Perez had to change that style by giving more control to Zidane which made the team respect Zidane more and successes followed. Benitez was simply a casualty in a power tussle although he had his own issues. Had Zidane replaced Carlo he would also most likely have been fired too if he were given the Benitez treatment
