I can remember aroud 2006 World Cup qualifying period, there was a match scheduled to be played in London, and Okocha who was based in England at the time claimed he missed the road and did not know the venue of the match.
Later that same qualifying campaign, there was a crucial fixture for which barely 13 players or so reported to camp. The coach openly lamented the players’ lack of commitment to the national team, at the end, that poor attitude and lack of seriousness cost Nigeria the ticket to the 2006 World Cup.

Okocha's exploits were acknowledged by CAF - at 21years or so, he was one of the best players in the 1994 AFCON.

I don't think my father ever stop talking about Okocha until he passed away. He always remembered the 1994 World Cup loss to Italy. He firmly believed that Okocha’s unnecessary flair and loss of possession in the build-up allowed Italy to regain control, which ultimately led to the goals that turned the game against Nigeria. To him, that was the best opportunity for Nigeria to achieve greatness in the World Cup. Until he died, the old man never ceased to mention that incident whenever football was being discussed.
He believed Okocha caused the goal.😂😂😂

He often tries to do too much, always playing "notice-me" football, instead of keeping his game simple, just play one-touch passes to maintain tempo, he go just dey hold on to the ball and be doing shakushaku until THE open scoring opportunity is completely closed . That defeat pain me but we move,it may be a blessing in disguise for SE.

I think there was a time when CAF considered using performances at the AFCON held in a World Cup year as part of the qualification criteria for the World Cup, but I don't know what then happen to the decision.
