Right from that moment, he became a man closely watched. Bola Tinubu was later arrested on June 2, 1994, by the military government of Sani Abacha almost 10 months after he made the comment on the floor of the Senate.

Many years later, he is the President of the country.

Sorry, but most of you are really ignorant about how economics works in real life. You need to forget politics for a moment. If a business is not running at a profit, it would collapse in inefficency, corruption and so forth.

That is how we lost four refineries, and became a net importer of fuel, and why corruption was rampant in the petroleum sector. It was all because subsidy, or free money, infected the sector.

What has been seen here in Nigeria, exists in every country that has tried consumption subsides.

This is not about tinubu, who I do not like, or any politican. It is about your right as a business person to set your price the way you see fit. And any leadership that tries to set your prices in the name of helping the masses is not your friend, or is it the friend of the masses. Such things end up with more import based dependence, less production, and more debt, and loss of jobs, and even insecurity.

Mr Economist, so you are more of an Economist that the Processor of Economics in the University of Ibadan that analysed this matter and other micro and macro economic issues over the weekend and their adverse effects on the Nigerian people.

Venezuela has subsidised fuel for decades and have lost refining capacity and also gotten into a lot of debt. This was before USA sanctioned them o.

The money paid to NNPC was not a subsidy , but was paid to enable them compete with Dangote. Government still owes them a lot of money in unpaid subsidy claims from before 2023. And it was a drain on our limited income. It probably worsened our debt self.

Also if corruption was easy to stop in subsidy , it would have been stopped decades ago. No country that has the same kind of subsidy we used to have has stopped corruption. Even your Atiku has not told us how he would stop corruption. Because there is.no way.

If we could not stop corruption in subsidy under several.administratuons , what makes you think Atiku would stop it?

And you don't get how subsidy costs rise with rises in production costs and maintenance costs during the year, beyond what government has budgeted for it. That is going to mean more borrowing to pay for it.

All countries with subsidy have massive debt resulting. We are struggling with the debt that resulted from subsides we used to keep

So I am.not defending any corruption. I am defending the right of a business to set its prices so that it can develop and give us good services .

Why do we go out to vote every four years in a democracy if major decisions like stopping the corruption of the subsidy regime cannot be achieved?

Also, the subsidy was removed because we could not afford it. It does not matter who was in charge, and I am not a fan of tinubu, or atiku, or obi, but put anyone in charge in 2023, subsidy would have gone.

The problem with subsidy is this...let's say that you are president of Nigeria, and you budget N10 trillion for subsidy for the year. Then all of a sudden , oil prices jump up to 120 DOLLARS per barrel, and at the same time refinery needs a major upgrade costing a lot of money too...and then you still have external debt to pay, and you have to find money for other things...that means that subsidy cost would shoot up.

But you have already budgeted N10 trillion naira...so what do you do, ? You borrow.

That is how we have been funding subsidy year in and out. When oil prices fall, the money for subsidy too falls, meanwhile naira cost goes up, because naira is weakening at the same time...more borrowing.

That is how we ended up with the massive debt that not only forced subsidy to go, but also, at the same time forced the government to massively borrow and borrow.

Anyone who is telling you that subsidy is coming back, is telling you that you go borrow money on top of the one that is being borrowed to fund the budget, from which the same subsidy comes. Time go reach that your debt would be larger than the budget...and what happened in Sri Lanka would happen in nigeria.


The fact is, Nigeria has never been able to pay for subsidy, and keep refineries running since the 1980's. That is what they have been trying to tell you, but many of you wrote it off as IMF things. At one point in the 1990's, government stopped repairing and upgrading refineries, and just let them run , just to save subsidy costs...and that is how we lost 4 refineries.

Also, there is a lot of corruption. You cannot stop smuggling, you cannot estimate how much transport costs go be, and even if you try to make crude oil cheap, the producers would eithe stop producing, or lie to stay in business, by making fake subsidy claims...

And there would be scarcity.

Even if you put tracker on all the tankers, you cannot stop them from selling into jerrycan, which would be carried over the border and sold at cheaper prices, but big profit....and the increase in consumptioon would push subsidy costs so high, that it would force more borrowing.



You can call me tinubu supporter, and shout abuse at me, but anyone who is promising subsidy comeback is lying to you, sure as tinubu lies to you sometimes.

I won't shout at you or call you names when am not crazy. I love a reasonable discussion whether from Obi, Atiku or Tinubu's supporters. We are all Nigerians and equal stakeholders.

In all you posted, you gave a weak defence for the corruption in the subsidy regime which is the main issue. Atiku didn't say he will return the subsidy, he said he will review it. The present one is not working and we need to do something before we all die of hardship.

The Energy security expenses from NNPCL is over 7 trillion. That means we can tackle this subsidy and still live okay as an oil producing country. How's Saudi and Venezuela doing it for local consumption of crude?

My position is,, it's not working and must be discussed again for the betterment of the common people

It's the season of politics and elections are close so it's the right of the opposition to use the numerous lapses of the Bola Adekunle Tinubu's regime as a campaign tool. He did the same to GEJ including unprintable lies through Lagos -Ibadan expressway media.

This govt forgot they are running against their own records now. Different campaign from 2023 elections. Those things they did barefaced and insult those who queried them are the records they will be defending to harvest or lose votes.

I will VOTE and campaign for Atiku for bringing back the subsidy discourse. I had maintained that it was wrongly removed and should have been modified and the corruption within it tackled with an executive order. There's no courage in removing subsidy cos it's the common people that are most hit, the courageous move would have been to tackle the cabal as a president. Bola failed to do so and it will definitely hunt him.
