Rep John Lewis, a leader in the civil rights movement and later US congressman, has died at the age of 80. Lewis was one of the "Big Six" civil rights leaders, which included Martin Luther King Jr, and helped organise the historic 1963 March on Washington.

As a congressman he was a Georgia Democrat, and represented an area which covered most of its capital Atlanta. In December 2019 Lewis announced that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi while announcing his death in a statement said, "today, America mourns the loss of one of the greatest heroes of American history: Congressman John Lewis, the Conscience of the Congress".... 5 cases of coronavirus have been reported in Cross River State by the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) as at Friday, the 3rd of July 2020. This is because 5 samples sent for from the hospital for testing returned positive for COVID-19 according to the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Ikpeme Ikpeme, in an internal memo sent to the staff of the hospital.

Dr. Ikpeme said the tests were conducted in a laboratory approved by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State. 2 of the samples came from health workers in the UCTH, adding that the workers were making “tremendous progress along the path of recovery”.... The Federal government has approved what it called “safe reopening” of schools nationwide in the next phase of the gradual easing of lockdown ordered to curtail further spread of COVID-19. It has also lifted the ban on interstate travels and has further authorized the resumption of domestic fight services as soon as possible.

Interstate travels can, however, only be done outside curfew hours with effect from July 01 2020. The Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, disclosed this at the daily briefing of the task force in Abuja on Monday 29/06/2020. He said the reopening of schools was meant to allow students in graduating classes, final year students, resume preparation for examinations. The American Department of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers not to use hand sanitizer products manufactured by a Mexican company, Eskbiochem SA due to the potential presence of a toxic chemical.

Photo-sharing app Instagram is set to overtake Twitter as a news source, research suggests. The 2020 Reuters Institute Digital News report found the use of Instagram for news had doubled since 2018.

The trend is strongest among young people. It said nearly a quarter of UK 18-24-year-olds used Instagram as a source of news about coronavirus. But social media platforms were also among the least-trusted sources.

3 additional molecular laboratories have been activated by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). According to the Centre, the new laboratories are in Ibadan, Akwa-Ibom and Jigawa and this brings the total number of testing laboratories to 33 in the country.

Almost 10 years after some deafening silence, America has once more, reestablished and reasserted itself as a global space giant with the launch by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of 2 astronauts from Kennedy Space Center.

This instantaneous launch comes as a private company - SpaceX, becomes the first private company to send humans into orbit and onto the International Space Station (ISS). Known as the Dragon spacecraft on a mission known as Demo-2, the Falcon 9 rocket is set to lift off at 19.22 UTC (8.22 pm Nigerian time). from KSC Launch Complex 39A. After liftoff, Crew Dragon will take 19 hours to fly to the International Space Station.

First Bank of Nigeria Limited says Nigerians with First Bank electronic cards used them 105 million times to make payments or withdrawals worth about N1.18 trillion throughout the COVID-19 lockdown.

FirstBank’s Chief Executive Officer, Adesola Adeduntan, also disclosed that the bank’s 53,000 agents across the country processed about N512 billion worth of transactions with differing values while the lockdown lasted. He noted that the bank was “able to actively support her customers, their families and businesses through these challenging times.”

On Saturday, a patient died at Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Lokoja, Kogi State, after exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. His samples weren’t taken. That was the 4th such death at the FMC last week alone. Not once was the patient’s sample taken, dead or alive.

March 22, 2020 was the first time this scenario occurred. A patient who came into Kogi state from Lagos required a CS. The patient exhibited COVID-19 symptoms, prompting the hospital to request for her to be tested. It was turned down. The patient was isolated for some time, surgery was done and she was discharged without testing.

Last week, there were some patients in the O&G ward who manifested respiratory issues, inability to breathe and other COVID-19 symptoms. 3 of them died. Fellow Nigerians,
I will start by commending you all for the resilience and patriotism that you have shown in our collective fight against the biggest health challenge of our generation.

As at yesterday, 26th April 2020, some 3 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been recorded globally with about 900,000 recoveries. Unfortunately, some 200,000 people have passed away as a result of this pandemic.

The health systems and economies of many nations continue to struggle as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Nigeria continues to adapt to these new global realities on a daily basis. Today, I will present the facts as they are and explain our plans for the coming months fully aware that some key variables and assumptions may change in the coming days or weeks.

An unmanned Russian cargo capsule with 2.5 tons of supplies docked with the International Space Station (ISS) today Saturday, 25/04/2020 after the fastest such trip yet from earth, Russia's national space agency Roscosmos said.

The Progress capsule was launched atop a giant Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, reaching the space station in just 3 hours and 20 minutes, making it "the fastest spacecraft in the history of flights to the ISS," Roscosmos said...
