MEET THE DEAN, FACULTY OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE - AKWA IBOM STATE UNIVERSITY:
Prof. Veronica J. Umoh attended Holy Child Convent School, Abiakpo Ikot Essien and obtained her West African School Certificate in 1970 from Cornelia Connelly College, Uyo. She had her GCE A/L (London) in 1973 from College of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt. She graduated with a B.Sc degree in Biochemistry/Microbiology from Ahmadu Bello University in 1976, M.Sc. degree in Food Science from University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri, U.S.A in 1979 and PhD in Food Microbiology from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in 1988.

Between 1976 and 1977, Professor (Mrs) Umoh taught chemistry in Lutheran Secondary School, Ikot-Obong Edong while serving in the NYSC scheme. She was a Research Assistant in Milk Research Laboratory, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri, U.S.A. She joined the services of Ahmadu Bello University as an Assistant Lecturer in 1981 and rose to the rank of a Professor in 2001.

The government of Udom Emmanuel, in actualizing his core mandate of providing quality education for the citizens, has facilitated the strategic development of the ICT infrastructure which has seen many administrative processes being automated and deployed to facilitate teaching, learning, critical thinking and peer discussions in the university. The wife of the Akwa Ibom State Executive Governor, Deaconess Martha Udom Emmanuel, has charged university women to brace-up and showcase their Excellency. She gave the admonition during a one-day workshop that was organized by the Akwa Ibom State University Women’s Association (AKSUWA) on Thursday, the 25th of April 2019 under the theme “the Excellency of Womanhood”.

She noted that “the workshop couldn’t have come at a more auspicious time than now when Akwa Ibom State is joining the rest of Nigeria in the global community’s clamor for more women involvement in the affairs that affect our polity”.

Deaconess Martha observed that women are carriers of Excellency and they should always endeavor to come together to support themselves, in order to be well positioned to compete in today’s society. She submitted that the role of creativity and innovation by women cannot be over-emphasized.

“God created women for a purpose, not just to bare children. Women were created to add valve to the society and that we will surely do”

Earlier during the event, the Vice-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University – Prof Eno Ibanga had noted that God created women as stabilizers, stating that “they are the ones that make everything to happen including humanity”. Prof Ibanga informed Her Excellency that Akwa Ibom State University(AKSU) is a very unique University that has all of her academic programmes accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

On Wednesday, the 24th of April 2019, the Management of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) welcomed a 63-man team from the National Universities Commission (NUC), who arrived the University on a Resource Verification exercise. Following the expiration of its four (4) year tenure, the Governing Council of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has been dissolved as approved by the Visitor to the University, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel. The inauguration of the new and pioneer Akwa Ibom State University Alumni Association held today, Wednesday, 10th April, 2019 at the main campus of the University. The ceremony commenced with a welcome address by the Chairman, Mr. Sunday Okpo who thanked the University management who deemed it fit to have an alumni at this level of the institution as compared to other state owned institutions across the country.

This was then followed by presentation of the newly elected excos by the Electoral Board Chairman for oath taking, swearing in and presentation of certificate of office. Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) on Friday, the 5th of April 2019 held her 9th Matriculation exercise. The grand occasion was graced by parents, guardians and well-wishers, who trooped out in their numbers to support the newly admitted students.

Speaking during the occasion, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eno Ibanga rejoiced with matriculating students, noting that “it is a great privilege to be among those who have finally scaled all the hurdles to gain admission into the University”. He went further to sound a note of caution against anti-social vices that are prevalent in the society

All is set for the 9th Matriculation ceremony of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU). The exercise will hold at the mini-stadium of the University from 10am on Friday, the 5th of April 2019. This is to notify all fresh students that the 9th Matriculation Ceremony of Akwa Ibom State University will hold on Friday, 5th April, 2019 on the University Sports ground at the Main Campus, Ikot Akpaden by 10am. Accordingly, as directed by the Vice-Chancellor, all fresh students who have been screened and cleared are hereby informed to pay the sum of N3,000 (Three Thousand Naira) only, for hiring of academic gowns for the matriculation ceremony. Payment should be made at the Bursary Department (Students’ Account unit) and receipt obtained/presented to the respective Faculty Officers for issuance of the academic gowns.

Note that all academic gowns must without fail be returned to the Faculty Officers after the matriculation ceremony not later than Monday, 8th April, 2019. In preparation for 2019 JAMB CBT examination, a free Computer Based Tutorial class is currently on-going in Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) main campus. The 2-day exercise was declared open by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof Esio Oboho. The exercise, which is undertaken under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of Akwa Ibom State University, is being conducted in collaboration with a socio-cultural group, Uyio Ikpa Ikono Welfare Union and the number of students that are to attend the event is estimated at 200. The occasion featured a road-walk round the campus, while the members went from office to office to enlighten fellow staff on the benefits of joining the Association. An Accident involving two vehicles occurred along Abak–Ikot Abasi road by Holy Family College on Tuesday, the 12th of March 2019. It involved a white Hilux vehicle that was heading towards Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State. Passers-by who rushed to the scene to assess the accident were rather taken aback when they found our that the white Hilux vehicle was conveying some 6 bags of already thumb printed ballot papers, that was scattered all across the road.

Security agencies were informed of the mishap and in no-time, members of the FRSC and Nigeria Police were on the scene in their numbers. Members of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) unit 633 evacuated the injured driver and we understood, took him for emergency medical treatment , while members of the Abak Police Division conveyed the scattered ballot papers in their vehicle to the Police station.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Akwa Ibom state, has declared Mr. Udom Emmanuel, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP winner of the gubernatorial election held on Saturday March, 10, 2019 across the country. Udom Emmanuel Emmanuel won election in 30 out of 31 local government areas of the state to return to hilltop mansion for a 2nd term in office. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Rivers State has accused military and police personnel of placing the Rivers State INEC office under siege. The INEC in Rivers State further declared that the military and police personnel are illegally screening Collation Officers , thereby obstructing the Collation process for the Rivers State Governorship Election.

It has been hectic for security agencies in Akwa Ibom State in the last 24 hours. Security cases have taken an upward spiral in what seems like an aftermath of the Presidential visit to thank and stir up the supporters of APC in Akwa Ibom State on Monday, the 4th of March 2019.

During the event, a disturbing pattern of rhetoric was noticed when Comrade Adams Oshiomole and others who spoke at the event stated that the mandate of APC, who he equated to a Lion, was stolen in AKwa Ibom State and that came what may it will be recovered during the 2019 Governorship election.
