Another attempt to attack Jos area (Jos South
LGA), Plateau state, was feared on Tuesday,
July 14. Cautious office assistant of a
magistrate court in Bukuru alerted the police. Recall that on Sunday an explosion rocked a church in Jos North. A security guard had reportedly thrown the device out of building before it went off. Therefore no life was lost. The operatives later discovered another explosive (some reports stated two more devices had been found). According to Premium Times, in the early hours of Tuesday, residents and witnesses narrated that an office clerk had averted tragedy by spotting the explosive device. Abuh Emmanuel, Jos police public relation officer, confirmed that the device had been discovered, but denied that it was an explosive. He, however, commended the employee who found it and informed the police. SOURCE: www.naij.com/489173-bomb-scare-stalls-operations-in-jos-south.html |

The RIVERS State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has dissolved the State Independent Electoral Commission and the Rivers State Judicial Service Commission. The dissolution of the two bodies by the governor came few hours after the State House of Assembly earlier directed the governor to dissolve the two commissions. The House had summoned the chairmen and members of the commissions to give account of their activities within the last two years. The state lawmaker, who were apparently dissatisfied over the explanation of the head of the two commissions on Monday, empowered Wike to sack the commissioners and dissolve the commissions. But Wike, in a short statement, signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Sir. Opunabo Inko-Tariah, explained that he acted in line with the directive of the House on the grounds of official misconduct levelled against the commissions. A former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Justice, Dr. Ali Ahmad, was on Monday elected and sworn in as the Speaker of the 8th Kwara State House of Assembly. Ahmad was nominated by a member representing Shawo/Igboidun Constituency, Mr. Hassan Oyeleke, as a sole nominee. He was consequently unanimously elected by the other 23 legislators of the House which comprises 24 members, including the Speaker. Also elected as the Deputy Speaker is Mr. Matthew Okelari. Ahmad, who represented Ilorin East and South Federal Constituency, after his swearing in by the Clerk of the House, Mr. Olatunde Oyeniyi, said the task ahead of the 8th Assembly was daunting. He stated that the economic outlook of Nigeria was frightening, adding that youth unemployment has risen to an unprecedented level. He charged his colleagues to be committed so that they can be creatively finding short-term panacea and long-term solutions to the socio-economic challenges of the state. He pledged that the executive arm of the government and the assembly would work harmoniously in ensuring protection of life and property of the residents of the state as well as ensuring the advancement of the people's welfare and economic well-being. He also said it was cheering that all the state legislators were from the All Progressives Congress. He also said that he was hopeful that a former governor of the state, Dr. Bukola Saraki, will emerge the next Senate President. "While this is good, it presents its own challenge of complacency, apathetic toleration and laid-back attitude. We must avoid negative drawback of consensus. Our own version of consensus must mean that we are united in ensuring transparency and that there is no dissent in achieving the goal of accountability and good governance. "We must make this place a true House of people of all shades and orientations. We must ensure robust public hearings on all issues where stakeholders will have meaningful input on how government should function. "Our duty is to provide governance the way our people want, not the way we want. And there is no better avenue to gauge that wish than this House," Ahmad said. Meanwhile, the member representing Esan Central Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, Victor Edoror, has emerged as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly. Edoror was the immediate past Deputy Speaker of the 24-member House. His emergency came after a motion for his nomination was moved during the inauguration of the 6th Assembly on Monday by the member representing Owan East Constituency, Folly Ogedengbe, and supported by the lawmaker representing Ikpoba Okha Constituency, Henry Okhuarobo. He was declared the Speaker by the Clerk of the House, Mrs. Bosede Ogbebor, at about 12.44pm. The lawmakers also elected the member representing Ovia North East II, Bright Osayande, as the new Deputy Speaker of the House. Osayande, who was the former Deputy Minority Whip in the preceding assembly, was elected after a voice vote presided over by the new Speaker went in his favour. |
The Ondo State Government has given its approval to the appointment of Prince Kole Aladetoyinbo by the kingmakers in Akureland as the new Deji of the town. Aladetoyinbo, who hails from the Osupa Ruling House, was appointed by the kingmakers on Sunday, among other 13 princes that contested for the stool. In a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, the State Executive Council gave the endorsement on Monday at the SEC meeting. According to the commissioner, the approval followed the unanimous decision of the kingmakers to elect Aladetoyinbo, among other contestants, to the vacant stool at their meeting of June 7, 2015. He stated that the Oba-elect will be presented with the staff of office at a date yet to be announced. Meanwhile, the Regent of Akure, the Ondo State capital, Princess Adetutu Adesida, has expressed her displeasure for not being informed about the process that led to the installation of the new monarch for the town. Speaking at the Palace on Monday, she said the kingmakers and other relevant government agencies should have informed her about the process so that she could be psychologically prepared for her exit from the palace. She stressed that it would be wrong for the new monarch to meet her in the palace because of lack of information. Adesida who assumed the throne following the death of her father, late Oba Adebiyi Adesida, in 2013, however admitted that the Regent played no function in the selection and installation of the new monarch for the town. She said she was supposed to be carried along as a stakeholder in the town. "The process to me is vague. I was not informed initially. What has been done so far I am not aware. I read that the due process has been followed. "The kingmakers are the ones that did not carry me along. I am a major stakeholder and I should be informed. I want due process to be followed. Things should be done in a proper manner," Adesida protested. Meanwhile, barely 24 hours that the new Deji of Akureland was announced by the kingmakers, the family of the deposed Deji, Prince Adesina Adepoju, on Monday stormed the street of Akure, the Ondo State capital, to protest against the appointment. The kingmakers on Sunday selected Prince Kole Aladetoyimbo from Osupa Ruling Family as the new Deji of the town, among 13 princes that contested for the position. The protesters, who were said to be members of the Osupa Ruling House, called on the Ondo State Government to ignore the selection of Prince Aladetoyinbo and reinstate the deposed Deji. They also demanded that the installation of Aladetoyinbo as the new Deji should be discontinued immediately to avert crisis and instability in the ancient town. The protesters, who walked from Akure City Hall to the governor's office, were armed with placards having various inscriptions, such as "Mimiko: bring back our Kabiyesi", "kole Aladetoyinbo is apari: he can't become Deji", "Iroko, save Akure from Fasonranti, Falae, kingmakers", " This is injustice " among others. One of the protesters, who did not want her name published as a demonstrator, said market women would not accept anybody as their king, except the deposed Adesina. Another member of the ruling family, who identified himself as Prince Dapo, told our correspondent that the selection of the new Deji when the deposed one was still alive had violated the culture and tradition of Akureland. On getting to the governor's office, however, there was no official of the state government to address the demonstrators. However, the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of A' Division Police Station, Mr. Adekimi Ojo, addressed them, urging them to be law abiding. He promised to deliver their message to the Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko. However, the spokesman of Akure kingmakers and Asamo of Akure, Chief Rotimi Olusanya, said the performance of the traditional rite for the new Deji would continue, stressing that nothing could stop the installation process. It will be recalled that the deposed monarch had sought an order of the state High Court to stop the nomination of a candidate to occupy the vacant stool of the Deji. The police have uncovered a cabal operating within the Presidential Implementation Committee on Sale of Government Properties who specialise in fleecing unsuspecting people seeking to buy federal government properties of millions of naira. The Police Special Fraud Unit came to a conclusion that a cabal had been operating under the PIC to defraud properties buyers while investigating a petition submitted to the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Special Fraud Unit by a company, Multiplication Global Trade Limited,. The police report into the petition, which was obtained by our correspondent, details how some members of staff of the PIC colluded with outsiders to defraud sitting tenants by denying them their right to buy the properties contrary to government's laid down procedures for the sales. The report stated: "Discreet investigations reveal that there actually exists a cabal within the PIC whose modus operandi is described below: "That as soon as sitting tenants of any government property expresses interest to buy their flats in accordance with government policy and the PIC has profiled such tenants and found them qualified, the information about such property is immediately passed to members of this cabal who would approach the tenants and offer to buy the property off them at very ridiculous rates, usually between N10 million and N12 million maximum per flat, with subtle threats …that either they accept or they shall be disqualified. "The tenants are usually informed that they must all make payments for their respective flats together as one. Having succeeded in putting sufficient fear in the tenants, they are now compelled (the tenants) to give a joint letter of authority to the supposed buyer to deal exclusively on their behalf with the PIC and pay on their behalf the offer price. Sometimes, the tenants are paid even before the offer letter is issued. "This modus was recently deployed to intimidate the present occupants of No 6 Ruxton Street, Ikoyi, Lagos and in the process several high ranking police officers have been maligned as having interest in the property." The report further stated that any member of the cabal being used for any property without paying a dime to government purse was allowed to source for buyers using the offer letter of the PIC and because the properties were usually in choice areas, buyers were easy to find. "And having found a buyer for a price that usually doubles the government offer price, usually ranging between N650 million to as much as N900 million for Ikoyi properties, such buyer is then instructed to raise drafts in the name of PIC on behalf of each tenant for the value of the offer price while the balance goes to the member of the cabal that has been assigned that property to handle and consequently shared," the report added. The police report found some members of staff of the PIC to have engaged in corrupt practices and abuse of office. Chairman of Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Aigbodion, has been suspended for two months over allegations of financial mismanagement and other related administrative irregularities. A Commission of Enquiry has also been inaugurated to investigate mismanagement of the council fund. Announcing the suspension at a meeting with members of the local government executive council and councilors on Wednesday at Government House, Benin City, Edo State, Governor Oshiomhole said the Vice Chairman of Owan West Local Government Area, Reginald Okuns, would be on saddle while the panel probes Aigbodion. National Mirror correspondent reliably gathered that Aigbodion spends the council funds without the input or approval of his other executive members or legislators of the council. Speaking at the meeting, Oshiomhole said: “We have tried in the past to call the chairman to have a good working relationship with his executive. We have now decided to set up a committee of enquiry to investigate these allegations, both financial and non-financial, within the provisions of the appropriate legislations of the Local Government Law. “I have decided to exercise the powers vested in me to suspend the chairman during this period for the committee to investigate all t allegations and submit the report to me. “So, with immediate effect, the chairman is suspended and a committee of enquiry is set up. In line with the rules, the vice chairman will act as chairman of the local government area. I direct the suspended chairman to stay away from the premises of the local government. When the committee is ready to sit, the committee will invite you and you will have ample opportunity to defend yourself against all the allegations. “For now, we all have an issue at hand subject to the findings of the committee. So, I called you here as chairman, vice chairman and some of the councilors, I advise you to desist from doing things that will lead to violence or in any way lead to destruction. If anybody does anything that leads to rioting or protests or anything that would disrupt the peace of the community, the person will be exposing himself because the full weight of the law will be brought to bear.” |
Olisaeloka Chidera- Ezike, one of the suspects in the ongoing murder trial of Cynthia Osokogu, yesterday told a Lagos High Court that he never met the deceased in person. He also told the court that he only heard about her from his uncle, Okwumo Nwabufo, who is the first defendant. He said his uncle talked about her a lot and thought they were very close, saying the uncle had even told him he had plan to take her as wife and they laughed over it. Chidera-Ezike, who is second defendant in the murder case, stated this during his cross-examination by Attorney-General of Lagos State, Ade Ipaye, who is prosecutor in the matter. The defendant told Justice Olabisi Akinlade that he never saw the deceased with the first defendant and that he did not purchase the flight ticket for Ms Osokogu to come to Lagos as stated in the statement he wrote before the police, saying that statement was made under duress. He admitted that he went to Cosmila Hotel on July 20, 2012, with the first defendant, because he was eager to meet his girl-friend whom he had spoken much about. He said when they arrived at the hotel and the first defendant made enquiries about her they were told by the receptionist that there was nobody with such name there, adding that the first defendant insisted that the deceased was in the hotel, they refused and said they can’t be going from one hotel room to the other so they collected the hotel card, which had the hotel phone number and left. The defendant further denied ever seeing the first defendant make any calls to the deceased, stating that while they were having lunch in the first defendant’s house in Festac, Lagos, the first defendant decided to call the hotel to confirm if they had any news about the deceased, but the call didn’t go through. The first defendant thereafter asked him to call the hotel with his own number, which he did, and he handed the phone over immediately he heard a female voice reply. He said after the first defendant gave him back his phone, he made little pleasantries with the receptionist on the phone around 2pm. Earlier the defendant who was led in evidence by his counsel, Michael Ajayi, said he was arrested in Nnewi, Anambra State where he went to visit his sick grandfather. He said a friend named Oril called to say she wanted to visit him in Nnewi and he gave his address, only to be arrested by two (plainclothes police) men when he went to pick her. He said the men showed him a gun, collected his two phones, handcuffed and bundled him into their car. Chidera-Ezike said the policemen tortured him after baring his clothes. He said an Inspector Frank dropped candle wax on his private part, telling him to admit to the crime, but that he kept saying he didn’t know anything about the deceased. However Justice Akinlade adjourned the matter till April 28 and May 15, for continuation of trial. |
Shell claimed that the anti-graft agency made it to pay the sum of $1.2 million (about 239 million) to a firm, which it claims it was not indebted to after EFCC allegedly threatened to arrest and detain its directors. The plaintiff is praying the court to hold that EFCC was not vested with judicial powers under Section 6 and 36 of the 1999 Constitution and therefore cannot act like a court. Shell filed three suits against EFCC claiming similar reliefs. In one of the suits in which Dec Oil and Gas Limited is the second defendant, Shell said it signed contract on March 29, 2000, with Dec Oil and Gas Limited for the construction of a Gas Distribution Pipeline at Agbara/Ota. However, Shell later terminated the contract in December 2001, following which Dec Oil and Gas Limited claimed that Shell was indebted to it and sued. The Federal High Court entered judgment in Dec’s Oil and Gas Limited favour, but Shell appealed against the judgment. Shell claimed that the Court of Appeal set aside the judgment, but Dec Oil and Gas Limited appealed to the Supreme Court. While the suit was pending, EFCC invited Shell with a view to determining “the civil contractual rights and obligations between the plaintiff (Shell) and the second defendant (Dec Oil and Gas Limited).” Shell claimed that even though it drew EFCC’s attention to a pending court case, the commission “vehemently insisted, under threat of arrest and detention of officers of the plaintiff, that it must determine the civil contractual liability of the plaintiff” The plaintiff, shell Nigeria Gas Limited said EFCC later found it “liable”, and it was made to pay $1.2miliion. “The plaintiff was not indebted to the second defendant in respect of the contract,” Shell insisted. It added: “The plaintiff brought this action EFCC in collusion with the second defendant became unbearable.” But the EFCC and the second defendant denied the claims. The commission said: “EFCC was and is investigating alleged diversion of loans and advances made against the second defendant by some of its creditor-banks.” It added that a bank petitioned the commission and listed Dec Oil and Gas as one of the customers who allegedly might have diverted loans and advances to frivolous projects not related to the original transactions entered into. Shell was “implicated” as being indebted to Dec Oil and Gas making it impossible for the company to meet its financial obligations to third party banks. The second defendant said Shell has no cause of action against it, adding: “This action is a ploy to overreach the Federal High Court in suit no. FHC/L/CS/1075/2002.” At the hearing of the suit on Wednesday, Shell’s counsel Babatunde Ogungbamila prayed the court for extension of time within which the plaintiff can file a counter-affidavit in opposition to Dec’s Oil and Gas preliminary objection. Consequently, Justice John Tsoho granted the application and adjourned till June 4 for hearing. |
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has described as unfortunate and disgraceful, a statement credited to Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, dismissing a suit seeking probe into the alleged missing N30 trillion. SERAP had sued Okonjo-Iweal to the Federal High Court in Lagos seeking information on the alleged missing N30 trillion as stated by former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Chukwuma Soludo. But Okonjo-Iweala, in her immediate reaction, had dismissed the suit as another ploy of the opposition to discredit her. Speaking through her Special Adviser, Paul Nwabuikwu, the minister, who described SERAP as a “so-called civil society group,” had specifically described the suit as a politically-motivated one, which was filed based on the discredited N30 trillion allegation by Soludo. “The suit is the latest in the campaign of falsehood and politicisation of the economy by persons and groups, who are getting more desperate by the day because the economy, despite their propaganda, is still standing and will continue to stand. “Like their previous efforts, this latest one will fail because Nigerians can see through their antics. “SERAP is nothing but a political tool of the opposition hiding behind the façade of advocacy,” the minister had stated. But SERAP’s Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumini, in a telephone interview with Daily Independent on Wednesday, said the reaction of the minister was not only unfortunate but disgraceful coming from such high office in the country. Mumuni said instead of addressing issues, the minister missed the point again by attacking the group, adding that it was a shame that such could emanate from the high office of someone in the person of Coordinating Minister of the Economy. “SERAP, as we speak, is in court against the Lagos State Governmentm which is an All Progressives Congress (APC) state. We also dragged the Rivers State Government to ECOWAS Court over demolition of some houses in the state. “The point is, the N30 trillion that we are talking about affects all Nigerians and any effort to seek accountability in respect of the missing fund should be seriously addressed. That is why to us, the comment by the minister is most unfortunate,” Mumuni stressed.? |
