Christianity Etc@ITALO. Catholics Please Defend Your Doctrines Here by Mrlouis(op): 9:42am On Nov 13, 2013
Having been a one time catholic, before now i have always thought it out to seek the truth beyond every shadow of doubt. I kept asking questions but no one could give me answers.even the few answers i got werent biblical(from the bible). So i went out in search for the truth. I have a questions based on the following doctrines observed by catholics which in every way seem not to be scriptural to me.

(1) why do the catholics practice infant baptism? I.e baptizing children and infants.

(2) why do they pray for the dead. I.e they see at as pre-requisite to pray for the dead. As somthing that is so dutiful.

(3) bowing down to the image of mary. I.e praying through mary and saints.

(4) priests and nuns not marrying.

(5) believing that there is a place called purgatory.

(6) categorizing sins as venial and mortal thereby making sins seem as if they have different punihment by God.

Could any catholic proove the following above from the BIBLE only with bible passages. If no catholic can proove all this beyond every reasonable doubt, then i'l believe that such doctrines are the result of human tradition.

thats what am saying. They cant proove that purgatory exist rather they come to change the subject matter. Ask this thersa whether purgatory exists, HE/she would say yes. Oya proove. They start going round and round or odas start quoting book of macabees and zebrudaya.. Lol

. So far so good. The protestants have being able to proove beyond every reasonable doubt that purgatory exists..yes did i say exists? Yes .because purgatory exists only in the overzealous imagination of a troubled mind nd nt in reality. Feeble purgatorians. Hahahahha

six one: Bros they are saying between good and evil there is something else. Or btwn light and darkness something is in between.
bro they are confusionists. Meaning they say u can eat ur cake and have it back. One thing dis people dont know is that our God is an orderly God. He is not a fool for making even in real life situations everything exists as pairs.that is why even without using the bible,a normal human being who hasnt gone to church will agree that there is no purgatory. man and woman. Good and bad, sin and righteousness, heaven and hell, love and hate.God and devil. Death and life, peace and war, sweet and bitter, and i could go on for eternity. U see, Every tin has its opposite.. But this confusionists are just making no sense. It will surprise you that there are many catholics, who still attend catholic church but dont even accept this doctrine of purgatory, why? Cos a normal man knows there gat to be proof for anything said .biblical, science , and so on. But these people have no proof. What do they do, they twist the bible to confuse others and themselves the more. Isnt that wickedness? Thereby giving more room to iniquity. Because that is what the end result is. Yes

adsonstone: Regarding the bold, that claim is the same orthodox christians make.
Its not even different from what muslims claim that their 'end time' Prophet Muhammed was sent to restore the true faith of the prophets.

Well, the truth is Christ found the Christian Church.

the holy spirit says sin, and its wages is death. The catholic church breaks it into venial (the ones that does not lead to death) and mortal sins (contrary to the Holy Spirit), Introduced an 'assumed purgatory' for 'venial sinners' and hell for 'mortal sinners'. I leave you guys to the Holy Spirit.

So, which sin did Jesus' death pay for? Mortal sins only?
Did He pay for venial sins too?
If He did, why do we pay again in purgatory?

the Holy Spirit authored the bible. He cant teach contrary to what He has revealed in the bible. If there is any supposed teaching that opposes the already revealed ones, then it MUST be thrown away.

well, the same Holy Spirit that revealed the bible has not changed.

Anyway, you say this cos youve been there all your life. If you have been a hindu too, no doubt youll defend hinduism

thank God you know this and youre not hypocritical abt it.
you have said it all bro. What more can i say?

Ubenedictus: You have decided to propose a topic you know nothing about! first there is nothing like church dues, in the catholic church and you can not be denied a sacrament becos of money, canon law forbids it. In uk, nigeria, usa and many other countries there is nothing like church dues, and you cant b denied sacrament becos of money. If u paid anything as a catholic, it is most posibly because u join a voluntary organisation, whatever u pay to d organisations go to them not d parish or d diocese. u are speaking of what u know nothing about.
In germany d government has a % of tax for religious person. Simply put if i am working in germany the govermt will remove tax from my salary including religious tax, % of d tax revenue is shared to d different religion and denomination, even to protestant churches. To evade religious tax you have to swear affidavit dat you are no longer a member of a religion.
D bible says if u deny b4 men i'll deny u b4 my father. All who have swore affidavit that they are nolonger catholic cant recieve catholic sacrament. If you say u are not a christian then dont expect a christian burial.
Now back to d topic at hand.
oga hope u visited that site.cos ur not even sure of what ur saying.

OlatundeCars: There is purgatory though not mentioned in the bible jst like d word bible isn't mentioned in d bible. Do nt b ignorant if u do nt knw. Nw in describing heaven d buk of Rev. 21:25-27 says: Its gates wil never b shut by day&der wil b no 9t der but notn unclean wil enter it. In contrast however, d buk of 1Jn 5:16-17 says: If any1 sees his brother commitn a sin not leading 2death, he shall ask&God wil 4him give life2 those who do nt commit sin leading 2 death. There is a sin leading2death. All unrighteousness is sin,& there is a sin nt leading2 death. D bible tels us dat only 2dwelling places will last 4eva read tru( Matt.25:31-46.). An important question needing urgent attention is, suppose a person dies in d state of sin dat does not lead 2 death, wat hapens2him? He cannot enter in2 heaven becos Rev. 21:25-27 says that notn unclean wil enter it. In addition, 1Jn 5:16 says that he who sees his brother commit a sin not leading 2death shall ask&God wil giv such ppul life; meaning dat by virtue of dat sin such persons hv no life of God in dem&der4 cant merit heaven odawise der wil b no need4 God's intervention. At the same time, he cant go2 hell becos 1Jn 5:16-17 says dat d sin does nt lead 2 death. So wat is d fate of such a person? He cant b left hanging in space 4sure;cos d only2 dwelling places4d dead re heaven&hell. So wat happens? 1 Jn tels us wat2do: He shall ask& God wil 4 him{i.e. 4d sake of d 1 who asks give life 2 those who commit sin nt leading to death. So purgatory is 4rm d english word purgation, which is simply given2dat intermediate state wer d souls of d dead re purified&assisted by prayers of d living cos 1Jn 5: 16-17 says pray 4 such a person. So ppul should nt judge catholics come out of ur ignorance &stop assuming, take ur questions 2 d right place "d church". D Catholic Church have d answers. May God bless&kip u all
hahahhaha dis one is even more confused. Go and see what ur friends have said previously. This makes no sense nah
Christianity EtcRe: Please Is There Anything Like Purgatory? by Mrlouis: 5:09pm On Nov 06, 2013
mavister: The doctrine of Purgatory is not only without Biblical proof, but it is against the clear and consistent teaching of Scripture. the Bible nowhere speaks of a temporary place of punishment after death for believers; however, it does clearly state that when the believer dies, he enters into rest, and returns to God, a state of existence that no living loved one can effect in any way.
"Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours ..." [Revelation 14:13]
"Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it." [Ecclesiastes 12:7]
Now read the text of the picture the Lord paints of the rich man and Lazarus, both of whom died and went immediately to their respective places. The unredeemed rich man went to Hell while Lazarus went to Heaven, also known as Abraham's Bosom. Even though the rich man pleaded with Abraham for some relief, Abraham refused to help him in any way, stating that a great gulf had been fixed between the two places, which prevented anyone from going to and forth, in either direction. Jesus gave no hint that the rich man would someday get out of Hell. Certainly, if Purgatory really existed, this story would have given Jesus the perfect opportunity to tell us about it. Do you realize that Jesus Christ preached more on Hell and punishment than all the other writers in the Bible added together? Yet, He nowhere gives us any indication of a place of punishment of limited time, after which the person goes to Heaven.
NO ONE CAN REDEEM HIS SOUL, NOR THAT OF HIS BROTHER
Of all the verses in the Bible that reveal the falsity of Purgatory, this verse, given below, reveals it completely. Listen carefully: "One cannot redeem oneself, to pay God a ransom. Too high the price to redeem a life; one would never have enough to stay alive forever and never see the pit." [Psalm 49:10, The New American Bible, Catholic Bible Press].
The traditional King James Version is a little more clear: "None of them canby any meansredeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:" Yet, this is exactly what poor Roman Catholics are attempting to do as they pay good money to get their loved ones out of this supposed place called Purgatory!!
According to this Scripture, and other verses, no one can satisfy for the punishment due to our sins, since Jesus Christ our Savior has satisfied for us freely and completely, by His sacrifice on the cross. No works that we could possibly do on earth, even if we were a Mother Teresa, and certainly not Purgatory, can ever redeem our souls from foul sin. Our faith in Jesus Christaloneobtains forgiveness for us, not anything we can do. "For by grace are you saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the [free] gift of God. it isnot from works, so no one may boast." [Ephesians 2:8-9, The New American Bible, Catholic Bible Press]
"All have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. They are justifiedfreelyby his grace through the redemption in Jesus Christ." [Romans 3:23-24, The New American Bible, Catholic Bible Press].
"For byone offeringhe has madeperfectthose who are being consecrated." [Hebrews 10:14, The New American Bible, Catholic Bible Press]
"Hence, there is nowno condemnationfor those who are in Christ Jesus." [Romans 8:1, The New American Bible, Catholic Bible Press]. Please think carefully about this verse. PurgatoryISa condemnation, albeit supposedly temporary. But, the Bible says that there isNOcondemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus! Jesus Himself told us this wonderful truth. "Whoever believes in Him [Jesus Christ, speaking of Himself] willnot be condemned." [John 3:18, The New American Bible, Catholic Bible Press]. Since Purgatory is a condemnation, it does not, indeed cannot, exist!
The invention of Purgatory is not based on the Bible, but it is based upon other inventions of the Roman Catholic Church, i.e., venial sin and temporary punishment of sin after death. According to Roman Catholic theologians, a person can commit two kinds of sins against God: mortal and venial. Mortal sin is a grave offense against the law of God or of the Church. It is called, "Mortal" because it kills the soul by depriving it entirely of sanctifying grace. Venial sin is a small and pardonable offense against God and the laws of the Church.
well said bro. Very well

A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF A MAN WHO LEFT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. U THINK IT IS IMPOSSIBLE, AM SORRY FOR U.

In this lesson I want to state some of the reasons I left the Catholic Church. I do not wish to state any of the personal experiences I had as result of leaving. I will mention, though, that I came from a large, devout Catholic family of twelve children. I attended Trinity High School in Louisville, Kentucky. At the time of my intense Scriptural study, I had two brothers who were enrolled in Catholic seminaries studying to be priests. I also want to state I did not leave the Catholic Church because of some evil that I had done or that was done to me. I left the Catholic Church because I came to believe that it was contrary to the Bible. This I will endeavor to show in this study.
The First Reason I Left Is Because The Catholics Do Not Have The Right Attitude Toward The Truth.
To illustrate what I mean by this, I will explain the difference in the two sides. Those with the right attitude toward the truth are always willing to test what they teach with others. They invite those of opposite views to work together for truth and unity. They appreciate when those who differ with them point out where they think they are wrong. They have everything thoroughly tested, studying arguments both for and against, looking at both sides of the question.
Those with the wrong attitude toward the truth are not willing to test what they teach in fair and open discussion, privately or publicly. They do not invite others to point out where they think they are wrong, and do not appreciate when others try to do so. They won't allow their members to hear both sides of an issue, and especially they don't want them to examine opposing arguments.
Hopefully, one can now understand what I mean when I said the Catholics do not have the right attitude toward the truth. Catholics are not allowed, and especially are not encouraged to hear both sides regarding truth and error. They are not to read books which differ from their doctrine. Thus, they are encouraged by the clergy to be closed minded to anything which differs from Catholicism. We ask, "Why don't Catholic officials encourage their members to examine opposing Scriptural teaching?" False teachers have learned that when truth and error are examined side by side, some begin to see the truth. False teachers are afraid of being exposed and of losing their members.
The Next Reason I Left Is Because The Bible Only Is The All Sufficient Guide To Salvation, But The Catholic Church Teaches That It Is Not.
The CatholicCatechism For Adultson page 52 says, "Can you learn to save your soul just by reading the Bible? No, because certain things in the Bible can be misunderstood, and because the Bible does not have everything God taught." Notice that the first part of their answer to "Can you learn to save your soul just by reading the Bible?" is, "No..." However, their own translations of the Bible teaches the opposite. All Scriptural quotations that I will be giving are from Catholic translations. 2 Tim. 3:15-17 says, "And because from thy infancy thou hast known the holy scriptures, which can instruct thee to salvation, by faith which is Christ Jesus. All scripture, inspired of God, is profitable to teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in justice, that the man of God may be perfect, furnished to every good work." Thus, the apostle Paul by the inspiration of God, says to Timothy "thou hast known the holy scriptures, which can instruct thee to salvation" and make you "perfect, furnished to every good work."
Rom. 1:16 says, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel. For it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth, to the Jew first, and to the Greek. James 1:21 says, "...With meekness receive the ingrafted word, which is able to save you souls." Consequently, the word contained in the Bible is able to save our souls.
The next part of the answer in the Catechism to the question, "Can you learn to save your soul just by the Bible?" is, "No, because certain things in the Bible can be misunderstood..." They are implying that the Bible cannot be understood. John A. O'Brien, the Catholic author of the book, "The Faith of Millions," is much more expressive when he says on page 152, "The Bible is not a clear and intelligible guide to all..." The book, "The Faith of Millions" was given to me before my conversion by my older brother Norman who was at the time a student at St. Meinrad Seminary, St. Meinrad, Indiana.

Fasholu: Hmmm, I'm just speechless, To the catholic turned protestants..Well done, continue the good work, You shall be rewarded, Christ founded the Catholic church, Told peter that whatever he binds on earth has already been binded in heaven, promised to be with the church till the end of time, said the gates of hell shall never prevail against it.
. See my brother i believed all this 'jesus started the catholic 'church nonsense when i was once like you. Was jesus a catholic priest? Abeg tell me. Ok if jesus started the catholic church as he said. Did u ever see him telling his disciples that they should worship his mother and bow down to mary? Abeg tell me. How was jesus baptized? See mr man when ur not sure of somthing, better keep quiet and learn. You are not even a better catholic than i was. So stop making noise. Ur calling me a prodigal son. Even my reverend said the same thing because he didnot suceed in dragging me to hell just like u wont. Whats the fuss about? Even womanizers and thieves which i knew then were always taking the holy communion thinking it is just bread nd butter. U catholics just do things but dont know why. When asked to explain u end u changing the topic.saying ppeter abi jesus started the church. Who cares? Do u learn more than the protestants yet u claim to be a christian. Do u know where the book of ezra is in d bible if i ask you to open it? Be wise
Fasholu: Its doctrine is based directly on orders from the holy spirit.
what holy spirit? Do we have two spirit of God? Why did the holy spirit as u sed not instrust the men who wrote the bible to write on purgatory, infant baptism, worshipping of mary's image, praying for the dead. Why? Stop blaspheming mr man
Fasholu: The Catholic church is not pure,I know that but it is only flawed because men are flawed.
why wont it be unclean when the doctrines are false? This is what mavister was saying. You know it is not pure still u remain there. Doing what.? Can u now see what made me flee from the catholic church? Everyone of u catholics know it is not pure but is still there. Thank you fasholu for that . You will have ur eyes opened soon. U are ready to learn.
Fasholu: Yet I want to carry those flaws and take them as my cross like a faithful christain..Thank you#Proudly Catholic
can you all see that this one knows he is waisting his time? He knows, they all know. I knew. To him now, false doctrines are now 'crosses'.. U see he doesnt even understand the bible. Is that what christ meant when he mentioned 'bearing of cross' in the bible? Guy no go end up in hell with ur eyes open oh. On how u miss am . No purgatory to enter and Na hell straight. Christianity EtcRe: Please Is There Anything Like Purgatory? by Mrlouis: 12:45pm On Nov 06, 2013
knowledge4: The Catholics too are a false Christian group that have too many distorted versions of the true doctrines of the Bible. There are at least 30 of them but i will state three of the false doctrines here

1)The Catholics believe that there is a place called Purgatory after death, which exists for the expiation of the venial sins of believers. That the souls detained in Purgatory can be helped by the suffrages of the Catholic faithful (Creed of Pope Pius IV.Art 6)
That the souls that will go to Purgatory are those who ''depart with venial sins or that have not fully paid the debt of temporal punishment...''(The Cathechism 107)
The Bible refuttal is in 1 John 1:7,John1:29,Acts 4:12 which affirms very clearly that there is only one mode of expiation which is by the Blood of Jesus Christ.

2)The Catholics believe that some sins do not deserve the wrath of God.They claim that such sins are venial sins and do not incur spiritual death to the soul.their examples of ''venial sins'' include lying and stealing small things.(Dens Theologia, tom 1&e Peccatis No.154)
The Bible states that every sin deserves the wrath of God(Romans 6:23)(Gal 3:10)(Ezekiel 18:20)
Revelation 21:8 states that all liars will have their part in the lake of fire

3)The Catholics believe that the Church of Rome is infallible, that ''the Pope cannot err and is infallible in defining matters of faith and morals...''.The dogma of Papal infallibility was defined at the Vatican Council which states that anyone contradicting this is a heretic.(Pope Pius X Compedium)(Cathechism of the Council of Trent,Ques Xvii,Part 1,p.100.

The Bible states that no person or church on earth is infallible.(Ezekiel 7:26)(Isaiah 56:10)(Acts 20:29-30)(1Tim4:12)(Matthew 15:14)(2 Thess 2:3-4)

Submission: The Catholics are a false christian sect which doctrines are at variance with the doctrines of the true christian faith. If any Catholic can dispute the facts above with solidly grounded and undeniable facts devoid of sentiments, you are welcome.
yes they are welcome

It is a height of foolishness for somebody to believe that after spending several years on earth without being born again he will then receive some kind of pardon when he dies. the bible have told us that it is appointed once for a man to die, after that judgement. HolyHolla: I, for one, will not be dragged into arguments. I raised issues, which no one but the young man, Mavista, more than adequately attended to in totality. I'm satisfied with his explanations and I noticed he was discussing with excellence based on theological and academic research. This sort of research is what I expected from everyone else rather than indulging in repetition of dogmas which we have been fed with since childhood to prove what each individual is insisting on.

I'm equally elated that from his research, he himself declared, he has learnt much more in the discussion, therefore, he has not lost out in the discourse. This is what I expect of everyone of us. We should all gain by our mutual interactions on NL, but that would depend on our motives; whether we just want to prove our preconceived points or truly learn new things.

I notice that while querying the matter of purification as written by Mavista, you were only twisting his words. Everyone knows there's difference between purification by fire after death in a Purgatory and purification of the individual's works on the Day of Judgement of the Saints. It's the latter that Mavista wrote about, while you insist on the former. The Bible authoritatively states that it is appointed for all men to die once, and AFTER comes the judgement. Nothing comes in between.

I'm a product of a great Catholic academic secondary institution, to which I ever remain grateful but those days, I never knew that there are so many hidden doctrines that negate scriptures while elevating human traditions until I began to study the Bible without preconceived ideas in my mind. I recommend the same form of studying scriptures to everyone for thorough understanding. The Holy Spirit can only speak to a heart that is willing to learn, not one already filled with hard doctrines of men. That is why the Pharisees of Jesus' time gained nothing from His teachings but offense... Because of the hardness of their hearts.

Blessings to y'all for the interesting discourse. Everyone tried, but Mavista won my heart.
guy guy u are 3much .daz what am trying to tell them since. What italo is saying doesnt make a sense at all. Maybe he wants me to tell him this in latin. Besides. I can even say that the pharisees started the catholic church. Ahhaha because they both have the same kind of mindset.

HolyHolla: indulging in repetition of dogmas which we have been fed with since childhood to prove what each individual is insisting on.
yes yes yes they are just vomitting what they have been fed from childhood. Head knowledge of the bible is far far different from knowing the bible in deeds, in lifstyle and tru the interpretation of the holy spirit. Thank you holyholla for that brilliant post.

It's a good sign when someone who says something bad about you shows himself to the public to be a shameless liar.

Thank you Mrlouis.
is that so? Am not here to drag issues with you cos as for you u can keep on arguing. As for me am just happy that all thses lies u are telling me which i tot were true before when i was a catholic like you, i now know they are not the truth. Little wonder why a girl had a vision about the pope in hell. Guess the old man was hoping to enter purgatory.hahahha but he got dissapointed. May it not be your lot too. LMAO

italo: No.

In a sense, yes. More plainly, there's purification from uncleanness.

Judgement day.

Now answer these:

In Luke 16: 19-31, where is the rich man?

Heaven, hell or earth?

In 1 Cor 15:29, 30, where are the dead whom people are being baptized for located?

Heaven, hell or earth?
stop asking questions that are not related. See i was once a catholic and i prroved all this more than you are doing ok. Wen i still a catholic, a friends mother died, they were catholics too. Do you know what happend? The church said they wont bless the body with holy water yet cause she has not been paying her church dues. When i saw this. Another question arose in my mind. Is this not the practice of ritualists and cultists. Alot of dust-raising things are goin on in the catholic church in which i was once a partaker but now. Praise God. Am free.

What an intresting thread. I hav been folowing this thread for some time now and i must say my eyes are opened. Let me start by saying this. I was once a catholic. A very devout one. Just like italo here. If u dont believe me,its left for you. But a time came when i began to reason the word of God..i saw many things and many questions were on the tablet of my heart but no reasonable answer. I began to discover that i am not benefitting anything from the catholic church. It seemed to me like a place where one does the same thing over and over all d time without any actual and personal knowlegde and relationship with the saviour. Imagine we all would be goin to mass and the need to carry a bible is not there. Something kept lacking on the inside of me. But i could not detect wat is was.. I continued like this. But it got to a time i had to leave the catholic church to look for the real gospel else where.and as i did so. I found God in his real self.. I knew God fully... To me , though i was once a catholic, but it seems like a cult to me. No vibrancy and enough room to commit sin. Just as in this thread i have been following. That Guy mavister has really elucidated on this topic because that was the doctrine i used to believe in then. But now God opened my eyes. I would not blaim italo and his friends, cause that is what i did then until God opened my eyes. Please everyone dont be decieved, there is no such place as purgatory. Ples i beg you ol. There are only two places afetr death. Heaven or hell. Its either u make one of these. Even on earth here everything comes in pairs . God and devil; good and bad: boy and girl; life and death, just look at every instance and u see what am telling you is the truth. Italo please stop decieving people. You youself is confused. All the verses you quote trying to say purgatory is for real is either the one written by ur catholic church or it doesnt relate to purgatory or what you call it. You are just arguing blindly and i call it foolishness. You are a false prophet and God judgement will come on you if u dont change. Its a note of advice. While i was a catholic this questions kept bugging me until i found out the truth 1. Why are infants baptized in catholic church 2. Is there any purgatory. 3.why is mary image worshipped 4. Why do we catholics pray for the dead? 5. Most sinners in the catholic church still take the holy communion all the time without knowing the importance of geting saved and so on and so forth. But ever since i came out of the catholic church, God has exposed the truth to me. I pray he does so for some of you here. I rest my case
