PaulJohn1: Who owns CONSAT? A Nigerian? CONSAT joins Nigerian pay-TV sector, adds FilmBox to channel roster Details Rebecca Hawkes | 20 June 2014 Nigeria's latest pay-TV platform Continental Satellite Limited (CONSAT) has this week marked its official launch in Lagos and added seven channels from SPI International to its satellite bouquet.
SPI International channels FilmBox, FilmBox Arthouse, FightBox, DocuBox, FashionBox, Fast&FunBox and 360 TuneBox are now available to CONSAT TV subscribers in Nigeria, as well as in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.
The MPEG4-based digital TV platform currently carries around 50 channels, and hopes to double this figure by 2015.
CONSAT, which is owned by former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is seeking to offer satellite TV for middle and low income earners, by allowing subscribers to only pay for the channels they want to watch.
"As a consequence of (the) digital migration and the lead up to 2015, it is clear that the number of households that require a decoder will grow considerably. Currently, there are about two million active subscribers in Nigeria, yet we have in excess of 20 million homes," said Mayokun Okunola, CEO, CONSAT.
"We truly appreciate CONSAT's mission to respond to the growing needs of Nigerians to offer a common platform for digital TV transmission and we are very proud to deliver our unique and top quality line-up of TV channels to CONSAT subscribers," said Berk Uziyel, executive director, Filmbox International.
Addy Awofisayo, director of content, CONSAT, added: "Our content providers are very passionate; we plan on developing our own content. It is our mandate to air contents from Nigeria and take it across the world; we will continue to invest in content."
The CONSAT decoder is available for NGN14,999 (US$92) with a two-month free subscription and free installation. Its channels are broadcast across the region from Eutelsat's 16° East orbital slot.
