At just 16 years old, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa is now the youngest chess player ever to defeat Magnus Carlsen in his long reign as world champion. The two faced off in an online tournament that had featured 16 elite players.

Praggnanandhaa is a grandmaster from India who is commonly referred to simply as Pragg. The chess prodigy said after the game that he was glad to improve on his play from the tournament's first day — and to avoid a draw in his game against Carlsen, which included 39 moves.

"I'm just really happy," he said in an interview from Chennai, India.

Pragg is the youngest person to defeat Carlsen since he became world champion — a streak that extends back to 2013, as World Chess notes.

Los Angeles Lakers star forward LeBron James passed basketball Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for most combined regular season and postseason points scored in NBA history on Saturday.

James, 37, needed 19 points entering the Lakers' road game against the Golden State Warriors to pass Abdul-Jabbar, who had 44,149 combined points -- 38,387 in the regular season and 5,762 in the playoffs -- in his illustrious career.

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed its readiness to embark on another round of industrial action following what it called government’s unfaithfulness in implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) it signed with the union upon which the last strike action was suspended.

ASUU national president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, who stated this after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at University of Abuja on the 13th and 14th November, 2021 said governments should be held responsible if they fail to address the issues within three weeks.

The union lamented that despite its meeting with the minister of labour and employment, Dr Chris Ngige on 14th October, 2021, on the major outstanding issues including funding for revitalisation of public universities, earned academic allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) promotion arrears, renegotiation of 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, and the inconsistencies in IPPIS payment, the issues are still lingering.

Osodeke said, “ASUU is fully committed to upholding academic integrity in our universities and working to make them more globally competitive. We are equally committed to promoting industrial harmony in the Nigerian University System for as long as all stakeholders are willing and committed to play their parts.

“We call on all vice-chancellors, as the main drivers of the system, to join us in this mission to safeguard the waning image of our universities. They have no business trading honourary degrees and academic positions for personal and immediate gains; thereby smearing the collective integrity of committed scholars and other patriots who are working day and night to uplift the system that produced them.

“Our union shall not shy away from taking the fight to administrators of Nigerian universities as well as internal and external agents who are bent on compromising the standard ASUU has consistently laboured to protect and improve.

“Finally, we call on all patriotic Nigerians and lovers of Nigeria to prevail on the federal and state governments to act fast to prevent another round of industrial crisis in Nigeria’s public universities.

President Muhammadu Buhari has described the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha, as a dedicated public servant, saying the nation’s COVID-19 management under him was worthy of praise.

President Buhari stated this in a statement he issued yesterday on the occasion of Mustapha’s 65th birthday anniversary.

The President explained that “since his appointment as SGF, my respect and admiration for Mustapha have grown ever stronger and deeper because of the passion and energy with which he does his job.”

The planned electricity tariffs hike expected to come into effect next Wednesday, yesterday, turned dramatic following a retraction by the Eko Distribution Company.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), under the Service Based Tariff (SBT) programme, had designed an incremental tariff with an upward review due next month.

The SBT came into force last year, increasing the cost of electricity by over 50 per cent, as government moved to halt subsidy in the electricity sector and allow the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) generate enough funds to finance the bed-ridden market.

President Muhammadu Buhari had, in September last year, vigorously defended the increase in electricity tariff tagged Service Based Tariff (SBT), stressing that it was the only gateway to improving power supply to the masses.
The SBT may have succeeded in improving revenue collection in the sector by above N260b, but to the detriment of the masses. Although criticisms have dogged the service based tariff, as improvement in electricity supply remains dismal, with perpetual outages and collapse of transmission and distribution infrastructure, some distribution companies already informed consumers that a new tariff would be implemented this week.

A document from the Eko Electricity Distribution Company, dated August 25, 2021, with reference number 023/EKEDP/GMCLR/0025/2021 showed that the tariff would increase from N42.44 to 58.94 depending on the class. The new tariff is expected to be in place till December before further increment takes place in January next year. Across the band, the increase remained N2 from the tariff paid between July and August.

“This is to officially notify you that there will be an increase in electricity tariff with effect from September 1, 2021. This increase is as a result of nationwide mandate to implement the Service Based Tariff approved by our regulator, NERC,” Eko DisCo wrote in the document signed by the company’s General Manager, Loss Reduction, Olumide Anthony-Jerome.

Shortly after the statement went public, a top government official stated that the statement was issued in error, while the Managing Director of Eko DisCo, Adeoye Fadeyibi denied that the statement came from the company.

“Our attention has been drawn to news making the rounds in the media from unsubstantiated sources of a planned adjustment in electricity tariffs. Eko Electricity Distribution Plc would like to inform the general public to disregard all such reports not emanating from the management or the company’s website – www.ekedp.com,” he wrote a statement.

In recent times, there have been blame games over electricity tariffS increase/ Earlier in January, NERC had denied a 50 per cent increase in some tariffs. Multiple sources had told The Guardian that there are indications that the SBT may be implemented in phases without the attention of the end users.
