Shehu, disclosed this on Thursday in a statement titled, ‘President Buhari approves review of grazing reserves in 25 states’. Buhari’s directive comes after his approval of the recommendations of a committee chaired by his Chief of Staff, Prof Ibrahim Gambari. Among others, the committee recommended the collection of field data on 368 grazing reserves across the 25 states to assess the level of encroachment and encroachers, stakeholder engagements and sensitisation. The committee also recommended the production of maps and geo-mapping/tagging of sites, analysis of findings and report preparation as well as design of appropriate communication on grazing reserves and operations. The number of the grazing reserves and states were deduced from considerations of existing security concerns and other pre-existing socio-economic conditions. The President directed that the assignment be undertaken with dispatch to bring more understanding on the grazing reserves and ensure their implementation. https://www.facebook.com/100063705831781/posts/223544209779105/?app=fbl

Despite the vote of confidence passed by governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on their Yobe State counterpart and national chairman of the APC Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, LEADERSHIP gathered that they are not happy with the way the party is being run. This comes against the backdrop of Progressive Governors’ meeting held yesterday in Abuja. The meeting was convened by their chairman and Kebbi State governor, Atiku Bagudu. Following the crisis that trailed the ward congresses especially in Ekiti; parallel exercises in Lagos and Ogun, and rumbling in Akwa Ibom, Osun and Delta, among other states, powerblocs both in the pro and anti-Mai Mala Buni-led have returned to the drawing board. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adI00UtHejg

Chairman of the United Nigeria Airlines, Dr. Obiora Okonkwo, has rejoined the Anambra State governorship race, with Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) substituting its candidate with his name. The substitution of candidate was completed on Friday, July 30, 2021 at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The submission of Okonkwo’s name followed his earlier resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in protest over the outcome of an illegitimate primary election where the party abandoned its constitution and used an illegal process to pick its governorship candidate. Already the PDP is contending with an avalanche of court cases ahead November 6 election. Also submitted to INEC was the name of Dame (Barr.) Jessie Balonwu, a former member of the House of Representatives and also a former State Women Leader of the PDP, as running-mate to Dr. Okonkwo. Dame Balonwu, who is from Onitsha North and South Federal Constituency of Anambra North Senatorial District, was also the first Igbo female senator-elect and Commissioner for education in Anambra state. She also served the state meritoriously as Chairman, Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB between 2005 and 2007. Dr. Okonkwo’s movement to ZLP followed a groundswell of pressure from political and community leaders, opinion moulders, stakeholders, support groups and institutional advocates for the good governance of Anambra State. The pressure had led to the formation of the Save Anambra Coalition which is an amalgam of advocates of good governance from all the senatorial zones of the state and cut across all political parties and established institutions and faith-based organizations in the state. The Save Anambra Coalition also consists of former aspirants to the governorship of the state from the different political parties who are not satisfied with the lack of internal democracy and direction of the parties and are also disturbed by the absence of purposeful leadership of the state by the ruling party. These political leaders are unhappy with the direction Anambra’s development had taken in the past years under the supervision of Mr. Willie Obiano and feel that he must not be rewarded with the luxury of picking a successor for the state. These political leaders and influencers are therefore united in their decision to support Dr. Okonkwo as a consensus candidate because of his level of integrity, focus, drive and blueprint for the good governance and development of Anambra State. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b22lWWAqT7I

Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has said it is going ahead with its planned nationwide indefinite strike by 8 00am today till its demands are met by the federal government. NARD president, Dr. Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, who disclosed this on phone with our correspondent, said the government was yet to contact them, adding that there was no going back on the planned strike. He said, “We know that government would say ‘no work, no pay’. We are ready for them this time around. We are tired of them promising us on paper without actualising them. Until our demands are met, we won’t call off the strike.” Recall that NARD had suspended its 10-day-old indefinite strike on April 10, 2021, after it reached an agreement with the government where a Memorandum of Action (MOA) was signed at the instance of the minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige. In a communique made available to LEADERSHIP, the association said, “After critical appraisal of the performance of both federal and state governments on all the issues affecting the welfare of our members as observed above and the insincerity of government in implementing the memorandum of action after 113 days, the NEC unanimously resolved by vote to resume the total and indefinite strike action from 08.00hrs Monday, 2nd August, 2021.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBtXp_SvbTw |
Former Nigeria Senate President, Bukola Saraki has dismissed reports of his arrest by the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), IgbereTV reports. He said he visited the EFCC on his own volition. He made this known in a statement shared by his media office on his Facebook page “PRESS STATEMENT The Media Office of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki would like to confirm that this afternoon, of his own volition, Dr. Saraki visited the office of the EFCC to clarify any issue that the commission may have wanted to raise with him. He was never arrested and is at home right now. It will be recalled that following the order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on the Fundamental Human Rights case filed by Dr. Saraki during the period of the former Chairman of the EFCC which precluded the commission from investigating him until the matter is dispensed with, the commission at the last hearing on July 14, 2021, pleaded with the judge that the order was preventing them from doing their job. Following this complaint, Dr. Saraki, as a responsible citizen, on his own volition approached the commission that at the earliest convenient date, he was willing to visit the commission’s office and clarify all issues they might want to raise with him. He, therefore, visited the commission’s office this afternoon and answered some questions. He is back home. He was not arrested. Dr. Saraki also assured the commission that he has nothing to hide and will always make himself available to clear all issues that may require his attention. Signed: Yusuph Olaniyonu Abubakar Bukola Saraki Media office" |

Referee: D Makkelie (Ned) England and Denmark faced each other in semi-final of Euro 2020 competition at Wembley with a success-starved nation willing them on to reach their first major final for 55 years as Italy await the winner. Gareth Southgate’s side are bidding to reach the European Championship final for the first time as they try to banish the ghosts of England’s ill-fated past. It’s perfectly poised. England started vibrantly but Denmark withstood that and then began to show their strength and savviness, and England suddenly began to look a little flimsy. Damsgaard opened the scoring with a fine freekick, for which Pickford looked sluggish. The Danes then bungled a counter-attack from which they should have made it 2-0. And then England re-asserted themselves; Schmeichel thwarted Sterling before Kane, Saka and Sterling combined to force Kjaer to slide the ball into his own goal.

Minister of state for health, Olorunnimbe Mamora, says the federal government may suspend the ongoing national identification number (NIN) enrolment exercise.Speaking during a programme on Channels Television, on Monday, the minister said the move is to avoid the spread of COVID-19 as a result of large crowds. He said the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) needs to reorder the whole process so as to ensure that crowds are well-managed and the people protected. “I don’t feel good looking at the picture where people are gathered in multitude. It’s like a super spreader event which we don’t like. But I’m also aware that the relevant ministry which is the communications and digital economy is looking at this,” Mamora said. “My understanding is that the whole process may be suspended so as to reorder the whole process in terms of management of the crowd because it was never intended that it would become a rowdy process like that. “We have a duty as government to ensure that people are protected. We also have a duty to ensure people comply within the limit of what is good for the society at large.” Crowds thronged the registration centres after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) directed telecommunications companies to block SIM cards not registered with the national identity number (NIN) after 14 days. NIMC staff had embarked on strike over “poor welfare package, lack of tools and risk of exposure to COVID-19”. The strike was suspended a few days after.
