I do pay deposit for any clothes I give to my dry cleaner those days before I got washing machine. And even if I don't pay deposit, I must make full payment before collecting my clothes.

That's how they operate. No dry cleaner would give you your clothes if you haven't made complete payment. Once you start doing that, you're weeks away to the end of your business.

That's because you understand terms and conditions of the business. Most Nigerians don't, and they don't like to do things properly.

I also feel the business owners are partly to be blamed. Many of them familiarise themselves too much with their customers hence creating room to compromise business policy with those customers. You know how Nigerians love to do things on a paddy-paddy basis.

I run a service business also and one thing I don't joke with is my payment policy (at least 70% upfront payment before work). I have had issues where clients will not want to pay due to one excuse or another but if heaven likes, let it fall, I will not do any work without collecting payment first. Some people will even say that I'm chasing away customers with my "harsh policy" but I say its better that they choose to go over payment policy than bad service. Whoever understands the value I create will continue to patronise me, and of course I try to maintain the best service.

Some even say that I'm not friendly, but in business we don't make friends, we make money.
