In a school that I taught few years ago, History is still being offered as a subject, but the problem is that students going for it are low in numbers, most arts students prefer to go for Government.

History is still taught in schools. In some states, it is a compulsory subject at the primary school level, it is also mandatory for students at the junior secondary level to study the subject at least in virtually all the states in Southwestern Nigeria.
The reason why History as a school subject isn't as prominent as it was in those days can be adduced to a declining interest among students especially at the Senior Secondary level due to a host of factors ranging from Government neglect, pedagogy...etc.

For your information, history was never removed from the secondary school syllabus in Nigeria. But most schools prefer making government a compulsory subject for Art students. Also, about 20% of the topics in government are contemporary history
