Travel / Re: Why You Need To Renew Your Passport As An International Traveller. by msanda(m): 3:09pm On Mar 10, 2018
So can one start the renewal process before the passport expires? Or is it only during the 6 months from the expiry date?

Also what documents does one require for the renewal process? Is it the same as for a new passport?

Can the passport renewal application be done online? Would it make things faster when I visit the passport office?

hillarymad:
Good Day guys.

Please does anyone in Lagos have an idea of how I can renew my passport? I am in the Island and do not want to go to far.
I went to the passport office at Ikoyi and even though it is boldy printed at the gate that passport is 17,800, the immigrations officer told me I'd have to pay 30k for renewal for 32 pages. I want to make the payment online but he claimed I will still have to pay the balance when I come and at the moment I really don't have that money.
Can anyone who either renewed their international passport recently or has a good idea of immigrations help me out on how to go about this and get the renewal done at not more than 20k?

Thanks.

Thanks for this question. Can someone who has actually renewed recently share their experience please? No offence to those who have answered but I've found out that we sometimes assume the system doesn't work without actually trying to see if it could work.

Take along with you the following.

1) Loca Government Identification letter

2) Two passport photos

3) A guarantors letter(u can get this at their office for a token)

4) 28k for processing (you will get your passport in 3 weeks)

5)Birth certificate or age declaration

Good luck!

Thanks for this. What if I am renewing an expired passport? Can I apply online? Also should I wait for it to expire before I start the process or (like drivers' licence), should I start a month before expiration?

Mine is expiring this year. Will appreciate if someone that has renewed recently can share their experience. Thanks again.
Travel / Re: How To Change Name And Still Make Educational Certificates Valid by msanda(m): 2:37pm On Mar 10, 2018
generalissimo:
Hello brilliant minds in Nairaland.
I want to apply for an international passport but I want to include my English name which has never appeared on any of my academic certificates to make it easier on the foreigners to address me. I want to include it because I bear indigenous names that are too long and too difficult to pronounce for people outside my tribe. I need advice on how to go about it and still make my academic certificates valid. I have already heard of swearing of affidavit etc but I want to know if there are better ways to go about it.
Thanks in anticipation of your help.

I'd advice you not to bother. Your name is your name. Let foreigners learn to pronounce it (like they learnt to pronounce Chimamanda, Obasanjo, and others). Or give them a shortened version/nickname to call you (my foreign boss calls me Mo'). No need to actually change your official documents just to make it more convenient for people. You can simply tell them they can call you a particular name.

Trust me, it's not worth the hassle.

Thank u. Will definitely do that. Please can ecowas passport be used to travel to America and other countries outside west Africa?

The Nigerian International passport (the green one) can be used to travel to any country so long as you have a visa or the country is visa-free for Nigerians. The ECOWAS passport though (the blue one), will only admit you into ECOWAS countries like Benin, Ghana, Senegal etc.

I did my renewal since 31st July 2017 and I haven't got any message to pick up the original up till now. Is there a way to check if the original is ready for pick up?

You should get a message when it's ready. You could go to the FRSC office to check though. However, they would probably ask if you got the message.

Pls I need explanation. my DL was seized last month by some road safety officials, I was given a ticket to go pay 5k to the bank and then come for my DL. will I be able to renew it if I refuse paying the money as the DL expires this month.

I'll suggest you pay the fine and move on. 3 reasons.
1. You need to start processing the renewal a month before expiration.
2. You'll be required to present your current drivers' licence when you go to renew.
3. It's the same Road Safety (FRSC) that will process the renewal. I expect they should have records that would show your licence was seized.

Or you could risk it. Who knows, they may not ask you. Your call

I recently lost my Driver's licence in transit, but its going to expire by next month. Will I be required to submit the original driver's licence when I go for a renewal next month? I have photocopies of it.

I have made a Police report and Affidavit for the loss of the licence.
If you check the website, there's a link for lost/stolen driver's licence. I'll suggest you simply follow that process as you will be asked to present your current licence when you go for the renewal. All the best.

Pls how do you know when the original DL is ready for collection??
Do you just go to the FRSC office after 3 months to check if it's ready?
Or, do you get a prompt (say, an SMS) when it's ready for collection?
And, hopefully it won't be longer than 3 months smiley

So I picked up my driver's licence yesterday after receiving an SMS last week Thursday. That was roughly 3 and a half months after I started the process. So I guess you wait to receive the SMS. You will be asked to go to the FRSC office with your temporary licence and the phone with the SMS. They didn't actually check my phone. Only asked for the temporary licence and voila! New DL.

can i apply online and send my friend to FRSC office with papers 1-3 ? (i'm not recapturing)

The only challenge with that option is that you need to take the test with the VIO yourself.

In Nigeria yes. I tried to rent a car with it in the US and it was rejected.

You can get an International driver's licence for use in US (while waiting for the National DL to be ready). The "big-name" car rentals (Avis and the likes) won't accept this but some smaller ones do.

Op thanks for d education. Pieces like yours endear me to nairaland. However I'd like to make some additions/corrections
Its a process that cumulatively spans less than three hours altogether as opposed to less than twenty-four.
A five year renewal costs 10,350, not 10,450.
For those not favourably disposed to online transactions like me (I have had horrible experiences and can't be convinced otherwise), you have the option to click pay at bank, preferably with pay arena.

On a lighter note, that 1000 charged by VIO appears fraudulently compulsory!

My brother, na N10,450 commot for my account o! Maybe Interswitch charged the extra 100 bucks.

About the process taking less than 24hrs, you are absolutely correct. Even if we factor in commute, etc. it shouldn't take that long.

And I guess the N1k is another way for the government to make some money. All the same, I got some value for it. At least, I know one more road sign now grin

I did mine three months ago without paying a dime as bribe. All officials involved were professional. Especially the FRSC. In fact there's a bold sign telling you not to pay anything extra than advertised.

Thank you for seconding this opinion. Glad someone else had a similar experience. Nigeria is getting better... gradually.

What of those of us without a car yet, can we start the renewal process already?

No one is going to ask if you have a car or not. Last I checked, you don't need a car to get a driver's licence. So long as they can ascertain that you can drive (which would have been done when you applied the first time).

I'm sorry I cannot answer this based on any experience. However the option (Expired but Lost) is on the form you will fill on the site so there is definitely a process for that as well. You will probably have to bring an affidavit or a police report or both.

Just go to the http://www.nigeriadriverslicence.org site and follow the steps there.

This keeps coming up.

Again, I did not have to bribe anyone. Like I said earlier, do not go with the mindset that you need to bribe anybody. Just act like you expect everyone to follow the normal process and they will. Nobody even asked me anything for weekend or anything like that. Not at all.

Stories. . .

When u reach office na there you go hear :
Our server has been down since two weeks
The capturing machine is faulty
NEPA Don disconnect our light

Bla bla

Like I said in the original post, I'll suggest that you select the option not to repeat the capture when filling the online form. Unless there was an error in your data capture when you processed the original licence, this is not necessary. That way, you skip whatever hassles come with the data capture process.

However, let's try to have some faith. They not only had light, they had a standby photocopying machine (N20 per page) so you could make any photocopies right there on the premises.

Things are changing for the better. Slowly but steadily.

Where you might likely be delayed unnecessarily is the 1k part. I'm very s sure the VIO guys will be waiting to extort you as they don't like making things easy. I stand to be corrected though. Fingers crossed.

I wasn't delayed at all. I asked what the N1,000 was for and they told me it was for the test and the CD. When I said I already had the CD, they asked if I brought it with me. I didn't push the matter after that but they did say if I had the CD with me, they would deduct the cost of the CD from the N1,000 and only charge for the test.

Then again, it's N1k. And I got a receipt for it. Compared to the thousands that some of us had paid some unscrupulous individuals in the past and didn't get anything (no receipt, not even a temporary licence), I think this is fair enough.

Hello?
What if one fails the 'simple' test after paying all those cash?

I doubt if you'll fail the test. Like I said, they were quite lenient. I got the first question they asked correct. I struggled with the second (some road sign I had seen but never really paid attention to before) and got questions 3 and 4.

The VIO official simply used the opportunity to educate me. I listened to him patiently and thanked him politely when he was done.

I believe if you treat these officials politely (as equals, not condescendingly nor like demigods), they will simply do their jobs. At least that has been my experience with FRSC mostly.

You didn't also include bribes/tips?
Nobody goes to FRSC licence office without that.

I did not have to bribe anyone and no one requested for anything extra. The only additional payment was the N1,000 for the test & CD which I got a receipt for.

So long as you do not go with the expectation that you have to bribe anyone, you should be fine. Just make sure you have your original licence and application print outs with you, as required. The system works if we work it.

The cut-down version of the above is as follows:

1. Go to http://www.nigeriadriverslicence.org and click "Renewal of Driver's Licence" under "DL Application"

2. Enter your details and submit the forms. Remember to select 'No' under the Repeat Biometric Data Capture option (unless you recently got tribal marks grin)

3. Pay online using your Visa or MasterCard

4. Print 2 copies of the Driver's Licence Application Preview Page

5. Make 2 copies of your current driver's licence

6. Get 2 passport photographs

7. Head to your selected FRSC Capture Center with your original driver's licence

8. Submit the forms, pay N1,000 for the VIO test/CD, make all needed photocopies

9. Collect your temporary licence and check back in 3 months for the new one.

Autos / How To Renew Your Driver's Licence In 24hrs ...or Less by msanda(m): 3:06pm On Jun 16, 2017
The following details the steps required to renew your driver's licence in Lagos, Nigeria. This is based on my recent experience. I'll try to be as detailed as possible but let me know if you have any questions.

The process can be split into 3 stages: Pre-application, Online Application, and DLC process. The whole thing can be done in a day.

PRE-APPLICATION:
My driver's licence was soon to expire and I started to experience the typical anxiety most people feel when they need to go through a process involving Nigerian government agencies. A number of questions needed answering so I got on Google ASAP.

QUESTION 1: Can I start the process online?
Answer: This was easy. The website http://www.nigeriadriverslicence.org shows up as soon as you type in "driver's licence" on Google.

QUESTION 2: Should I start the process now or should I wait for the licence to expire first? In other words, is there a grace period after the licence expires?
Answer: Nairaland had a number of conflicting opinions on this. Most people seemed to believe that there was a grace period after the licence expires. Some others even claimed it was risky starting the process before the licence expired. This notion is however incorrect.
I did some digging online and found an extract from the 2012 National Road Traffic Regulations (available here: http://frsc.gov.ng/publications) which states you can apply for a renewal "any time within a period of one calendar month before the expiry date of the licence." I also messaged the FRSC Nigeria Facebook account and the response was straightforward, "No grace after expiration please. You have to start the process as the license is about expiring."
In short, the grace period is 30 days before the licence expires. So I started the process immediately.

ONLINE APPLICATION
1. Go to http://www.nigeriadriverslicence.org and click on "Driver's Licence Renewal" (or "Renewal of Driver's Licence" under "DL Application"wink
2. This takes you to this page https://www.nigeriadriverslicence.org/dlApplication/renew where you are to enter your
Driver's Licence Number and Date of Birth. Note: If your drivers' licence is not going to expire within 30 days, you won't be able to proceed past this point.
3. On the renewal page, select between a 3-year validity period for N6,350 or a 5-year validity period for N10,450.
4. Complete the rest of the form with your personal details and contact/mailing address. You can choose to edit your information here (just check the edit box) or you can retain the details you had as at your last application. You can also add your Taxpayer Identification Number (just the 6 digits without the "N-"wink if you are so inclined.
5. If you do not need to change anything, you can skip to the bottom of the form where you fill in the Processing Office Details. The state and local government where your licence was initially processed will be indicated here, however you need to select your preferred FRSC Capture Center to conclude the process (I wasted some time here trying to figure out the difference between Eti-Osa_I and Eti-Osa_II then just went with Iru_VI eventually)
6. Next you have the option of repeating the bio-metric data capture or not. Unless you have undergone significant physical changes in the last 3-5 years, please select "No" here.
7. Submit
8. Note: If for any reason, you have to reload this page, please start over and select "No" under the bio-metric re-capture option again. When I first tried to submit and I had to correct something on the form, I noticed that the selection had defaulted to "Yes"; so I simply restarted the process from step 2 above (it doesn't take 5 minutes).
9. Once you are done, you will be shown the completed ML15R form on a Driver's Licence Application Preview Page. This will have all the application details with three options at the bottom of the page: 'Print', 'Proceed with Payment', 'Cancel'
10. I strongly advise you proceed with the online payment at this stage. It's the normal Interswitch process and pretty straightforward.
11. Once you're done with the payment, you will be taken back to the updated Driver's Licence Application Preview Page with the Payment Status updated to Payment Confirmed and the expiry date extended by the validity period you paid for (3 or 5 years)
12. Go to the bottom of the page and click on 'Print'

DLC PROCESS
1. Print 2 copies of the completed Driver's Licence Application Preview Page
2. Make 2 copies of your current driver's licence. Also have the original with you.
3. Take 2 passport photographs
4. Head to your selected FRSC Capture Center. If you can find the VIO "Road Sense" CD/DVD that you were given when you first applied for your driver's licence, please take this along with you.
5. At the center, present items 1-3 listed above (alongside your current original driver's licence) to the FRSC officers.
6. Next you will be directed to the VIO office (same building)
7. Present the above-listed items to the VIO officials.
8. At this point, you will be asked to pay N1,000. This is where the "Road Sense" CD/DVD comes in handy. The N1,000 payment is for a test and the CD. I mentioned that I was given the CD the last time I renewed my driver's licence and they asked if I had it with me. The explanation was that they couldn't simply accept my word that I had the CD. However, if I could present the CD, they would take out the cost from the N1,000. I didn't belabour the matter.
9. After paying, you need to take a test. I was given a verbal test although the VIO official pointed out that it should/could have been a written test. The test was simple enough and it essentially became a 5-minute educational discourse. Just be patient and remember, the maximum speed limit in Lagos State is 80km/hr smiley
10. After successfully passing the test, the VIO official will give you a signed Driver's Licence Checklist, and also complete required parts of the printed Driver's Licence Application Page.
11. Back at the FRSC desk, you need to make copies of the signed Driver's Licence Checklist and the signed Driver's Licence Application Page (with your passport photograph attached).
12. These copies attached to a copy of your current driver's licence will be further signed by the FRSC official and this forms your temporary driver's licence.

The new driver's licence will be ready in 3 months.
