TV/Movies / Re: How Do I Become A Nigerian Movie Star? by MsBS(f): 10:59am On Sep 28, 2011
Jen33:

Some of you make me laugh. You've no idea how big Nollywood is now. I just returned from Jamaica and I can swear every family there has at least one Nollywood DVD. Same as other Carribean nations like St Lucia, Barbados and Grenada. Even Papua New Guinea!

This is why it's called the world's third largest film industry after Hollywood and Bollywood.

Nollywood movies have completely transformed the image of Nigerians and Africans in those places. On my Jamaica trip, some openly expressed surprise that we had so many beautiful houses in Nigeria. And well-heeled people.

These are things they never knew existed in Africa, owing to pervasive western media misrepresentation of the continent,

So on many levels, Nollywood is a big thing.

Th rest of Africa was long sewn up. Eki Nigeria is what Ugandans call their number one craze - Nigerian movies. Nollywood stars are household names in all those countries, from Kenya to Zimbabwe, SA to Malawi.

The key to appreciating Nollywood is to be a true Nollywood fan - then you get to know the best movies and not simply judge the industry based on a passing acquaintance, from some possibly pirated b rate film you saw at the hairdressers or gym.

Sites like www.izognmovies.com are where you can read fan reviews of each movie before watching for a couple of dollars.

To the person who said Ghana movies are ''better'' than Nollywood output, YOU especially need to visit that site and educate yourself about the real Nollywood, as you've absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

I concur, even as far afield as Nicaragua when they talking about Beyonce they ain't talking about MRS JAY Z they talking about Nadia Buari. Yes I even found a Naija movie seller in Nicaragua! And there are no Africans there so its not a question of Africans missing home etc etc

I did notice that in the caribbean all the films are pirated and put together on one DVD. In Jamaica they only cost about 90p for parts one and two. In a way its better because you don't have to keep changing discs, but then its not putting any money into the producer's pockets.

I would just pretend you didn't even notice, after all the mistake is so small that it is very likely that you may overlook it. Only thing is Nigerians are seen as fraudsters so that isn't a good look.
TV/Movies / Anchor Baby Movie Review by MsBS(f): 10:54am On Sep 27, 2011
Pregnant Joyce Unanga played by Omoni Oboli and her husband Paul Unaga played by Sam Sarpong are illegal immigrants in the United States. Their visas have expired and their time in the USA is up. They were offered voluntary deportation 3 months previously but refused to take it Joyce has 4 months until she gives birth and has agreed with her husband that they will lay under the radar hiding from immigration until the baby is born. This anchor baby will act as a device for the family to gain legal foothold into the United States;. Joyce isn’t so keen on the idea but her husband Paul is desperate for their child to be born in the United States and have an American passport so that he/she can be afforded the same opportunities as American born kids.

After a raid at Paul’s workplace, where Paul drops his phone after running from immigration officials immigration and are hot on their tails and one morning while Joyce is out on her daily walk they pounce and grab Paul. Joyce has no choice but to evacuate the apartment if she too doesn’t want to be caught. She is left alone, homeless and pregnant looking for a place to stay when she comes across a Good Samaritan by the name Susan played by Teri Oliver in a doctor’s office. Susan comes in to save the day and offers her her basement to live in until the baby is born. It sounds too good to be true. Is it?

The movie highlights the harsh realities of being an illegal immigrant. It is not an easy life. You have no ID card or insurance to see a doctor, no ID to rent an apartment. You can not work because you have no work permit. You are seemingly present but more or less invisible. Sometimes resorting to further illegal behaviour is the only way to survive as we see in this movie whereby Joyce and Susan end up visiting a criminal counterfeiter in order to order clones cards so that she can have ID and gain access to public services such as medical attention that most people take for granted. There is no dignity for an illegal alien. When Joyce does turn herself in at the end of the movie she is treated like a common criminal, which she clearly doesn’t see herself as. She is put in handcuffs much to her horror. She pleads with the arresting officer that it is unnecessary as she is handing herself in voluntarily. Her pleas go ignored.

The performances in the movie were good and solid. There wasn’t anyone that had the wow factor for me except for Omoni. Omoni Oboli was the standout for me. It was an absolute stellar performance. She was passionate and convincing and conveyed a gamut of emotions effectively. I didn’t think Sam’s performance was as good. It was also glaringly obvious that he was not Nigerian as the film said he was so that was a huge miscasting in my opinion. Not to say that the guy was bad but next to Omoni he was coming across as pretty mediocre.

Travel / Re: Cape Verde by MsBS(f): 2:14pm On Oct 27, 2010
Wow I posted this 3 years ago and finally a couple of months ago I got my dream of going to Cape Verde. there are direct charter flights (very cheap) from London and so I went that way. It took me less than 6 hours. Beautiful Island and beautiful people although Sal is a little too touristy for my liking.

TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood Courses Taken At Us University. by MsBS(f): 5:00pm On Oct 17, 2010
Akpor Otebele came to respond to the post and this is what he said:

The courses are not just about the film selections alone but the totality of what is Nollywood, from its history and culture to its socio-economic and global relevance. The idea of the film selections was to show an array of the good, the bad and the ugly.

The story of one film may not be great but its language, form, structure, cinematography or videography, and a host of other critical perspectives come to play when studying, analysing or reading film.
Watching the films in class is not only for their entertainment value as the case may be when watching them at home. In addition, Nigerians are making films all over the world, and their cast are not all Nigerians but their work demand mention, whether good or bad. In studying Nollywood, we should consider addressing what some people call, “Nollywood International” films.

We also have the discretion of adding or removing films from the selection if need be. They are not cast in stone, besides, the films do not fully represent the mass volume of work coming out Nigerian every month but merely examples. We hope that this first attempt at making Nollywood an academic curriculum at Arcadia University, will spur other institutions, to follow suit and hopefully prompt Nollywood practitioners to begin to take their craft seriously and in turn, produce works of high calibre comparable to any, worldwide.

I have been to a few African countries. As for Nairobi Kenya I went for 5 days and I enjoyed it. I was staying with a Kenyan family thought so people would probably assume I was Kenyan. Experience differs according to circumstance.

Izu Ojukwu would have been good,  Who knows how the list was put together? Are Tunde Kelani's movies in yoruba? If so then I can understand why they wouldn't put him there as when people say NOLLYWOOD they are referring to the English Market Genre. They do have Amaka Igwe on the African Cinema course.

@JeSoul you make a very good and valid point. Who is going to go to Nigeria and not have family or friends there? It is not the sort of place where you will just roll up to MM airport by yourself just because you felt like it, and take a taxi to one random hotel and then throw your bags down and just go and explore Lagos for the fun of it, HELL NO! Of course everywhere is not the same as Lagos but still with certain countries you have to take extra precautions.

I have been to a few African countries but I think Gambia is the only one I would go solo to.
TV/Movies / Waterfalls - Movie Review by MsBS(f): 12:33pm On Oct 09, 2010
Van Vicker, Tonto Dikeh, Patience Ozokwor

Chidera, played by Tonto Dikeh is a brilliant student who lives with two friends Cynthia and Bukky on campus, played by Bhaira Mcwhizu and Zainab Boardman. While her friends are more interested in socialising than facing their studies, Chidera is the total opposite. As soon as she meets Brian, played by Van Vicker in class he becomes infatuated by both her beauty and brilliant mind. She, however tries her hardest to fight his advances, but finds herself reluctantly falling head over heels in love with him. This movie explores the complexities, trials and tribulations of their love.

It was great to see Patience Ozokwor and in fine form too. I haven’t seen her in many Nollywood movies recently, as opposed to when I first started watching movies and she would literally be in every other one. Patience played Auntie Philo, Chidera’s only family in Lagos, whom would certainly be called a cougar for her lust for younger men. Patience acted the role with much finesse, she was believable and added a huge comic element.

Ime Bishop Imoh was rib-cracking as the lecturer in the movie. He had me cracking up all the way through. The lines filled with longwinded over the top grammar attributed to him were excellent, and made all the more funny by his overgesticulations.

Travel / Re: Is Their Anyway I Can Sell Or Get My Money Back From Return Ticket From Klm? by MsBS(f): 4:26pm On Oct 01, 2010
The other thing is, that single tickets often cost not very much less than return, so even if you had bought a single ticket you would have probably paid close to the same price. These people don't even allow name change so the chance of refund is virtually nil. Only possible way is if you have insurance and you make up a big story.
