Former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, has said if amnesty would bring peace to the country and end the destruction by Boko Haram the Federal Government should consider it.

Buhari stated this today in Ikene shortly after paying a condolence visit to the mother of the late publisher of the Nigerian Tribune, Oluwole Awolowo, HID.

Speaking with reporters, Buhari said anything that would bring peace should be considered by the Federal Government.

Buhari was accompanied to the Ikene home of the Awolowos by his running mate in the 2011 presidential election, Pastor Tunde Bakare and a host of others.

Meanwhile, a group of northern elders under the aegis of the Northern Elders Forum, (NEF) has called on governors in the region to prepare the stage for a smooth dialogue between the Boko Haram group and the federal government.

The elders specifically urged the state chief executives in the 19 northern states to “identify members of the group, discuss with them and resolve some of their grievances” so that the planned amnesty scheme would work.

Speaking through a former University Vice Chancellor and an elder statesman, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, the group made the call on the governors to identify the sect members and bring them forward for dialogue with the federal government noting that dialogue was the only way out of the insecurity plaguing the region.
“We support the northern Governors to unmask the Boko Haram members. They must also deal with the issues of Boko Haram and their grievances, because this is the basis for the dialogue.

“Yes, the northern Governors have greater roles to play because they are the ones governing the states, and they are the ones managing the resources of the states.

If part of the problems is related to poverty, of course, they have a role to play in that regard.

“Apart from the federal government, there are two other tiers of government which have the responsibility of managing the affairs of the country, that is, the states and the local governments. They all have constitutional duties and roles to play in this matter.

“Part of the failure we have been experiencing is the failure of the state governments and local governments to play their role effectively.

“It is not only the federal government that has failed, the states and local governments have also failed and we have to begin to address how they will come back to work proper.” Abdulahi stated.

On the insinuations that NEF recommended N20 million and a house for any repentant Boko Haram member, Prof. Abdullahi said: “This is rubbish, it is not from us”.

“We did not pre-empt any condition for Boko Haram ceasefire. These are speculations from whatever source we don’t know.

“All we have said is that they should be engaged in a dialogue and they should spell out their grievances and these grievances should be examined with a view to ratifying them,” he stated.

Nigeria's Boko Haram rejects Jonathan's amnesty idea

The Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram has rejected the idea of an amnesty.

Last week President Goodluck Jonathan asked a high level team to look into the possibility of granting the militants a pardon.

The announcement was made via an audio statement believed to be from the group's leader Abubakar Shekau.

Abeg Jonathan has offered them amnesty and cash and he did not say it was Buharis idea! Boko Haram declined the offer.

Why are you talking as if you are IGNORANT about how our three tiers of government works to share money. You cannot be that clueless not to realise any decrease is based on what is shared with the 36 states and 774 LGAs. The states have been forcing this more democratic federal administration to just share rather than save.
