I'm Yoruba but Igbos need to stop underestimating other people. It's the sole reason they lost woefully in their failed Biafra attempt. Northerners are extremely intelligent also. Infact an average Kano man is extremely intelligent and calculative. The idea that academic merit should favour only the south is nothing short of crazy but when northerners are chosen in large numbers it can only be through God-fatherism. This thought process is simply pathetic and shows your lack of exposure cos if you had ever left your mother's laps you would learn many things about other tribes in Nigeria

You don't understand merit. It shows in your response. Many Nigerians don't understand what merit really means. They've been going through life cutting corners in everything. The other day, one Northerner wanted to use 'connection' to jump a hospital queue of only three persons. I had to ask him if he couldn't do even the simplest things without gaming the system.

Merit means a test taken by everyone should be the only basis of the scholarship, not the tribe or region of the candidate.

Many people fail to realize that:

2. If all sectors of our economy were peopled with the most competent of us, we'd lift more people out of poverty. It's rich seeing how the easterners are complaining about how northerners are trying to dominate everywhere and hence no meritocracy. When they are the ones that started this dominance in the 1st place. The first coup that happened in Nigeria in which Aguiyi Ironsi created an extremely unitary state, he kept Igbos in every position in this country. Removed all other tribes from every position and put Igbos eveeywhere. Go read your history book. No one says anything about it. Some of us painstakenly read history of nigeria even though they are no longer thought in our schools. Igbos started this idea of dominating everywhere with their tribe people in Nigeria right from the 1st republic and It's still in existence till today. If you go to UBA you will think the 2nd floor is a portal to Enugu. Igbo owned private business in other places are dominated by igbo employees. When Stella Oduah was aviation minister. If you are not Igbo you can't join FAAN, It's as simple as that. 90 percent of all employment into aviation in her time were Igbos. So what are we talking about. If an Igbo man becomes president today he will fix Igbos everywhere just like Buhari is doing to northerners, they can't stop themselves even if they try it. So why are they now blaming Buhari like he has done what they wouldn't do. Only tribe that accommodates others in Nigeria are Yorubas. Yorubas are the ones that will start a company and every tribe will be adequately represented in the organization. Infact Yorubas will be the least employed cos his employment will be strictly based on merit. Igbo and hausas/fulanis are the same that's why they can never agree on anything.

I am a southern but for God's sake if I don't pass an exam it means I don't deserve it. Truth is the North has benefited from the spoils and corruption of this nation than any other region.

In 2014, I and several other Nigerian University graduates had been shortlisted to write the Presidential Special Scholarship (PRESSID) designed exclusively for First Class Nigerian graduates who wanted to pursue both Masters and PhD in any top 25 Universities in the world. President Goodluck Jonathan had set the scheme up and the idea was to build a strong team of brilliant Nigerians who will come back to serve the country years later.

There were a little above one thousand of us who wrote the exam at CHAMS, Abuja. At the time, I was already lecturing in UNN so most of my friends (who were also my colleagues) enrolled. 16 of us in total. It was a computer-based test so we knew our fate instantly. I had scored 94% in the exam. In fact, 15 of us from UNN scored between 80 and 97%. Man! We came out of the exam hall completely joyous. We were so sure we had got the scholarship. And we were right. Sometime in February 2015, the list of 101 successful candidates was shortlisted in the National Dailies. Fifteen of us were on that list. I had applied to Princeton University, Imperial College London and University of Toronto already. That phase of our lives was glorious.

Fast forward to March 2015, Goodluck lost the elections to Mr. Buhari. That was where things started to take a new turn. Shortly after Mr Buhari was sworn in, he had recalled the list and complained that there was no single northerner on it. He believed it was an agenda of the South. Right before our eyes, meritocracy was shortchanged for Federal character. It was first like a joke, but we all lost that huge scholarship. It was worth about $250,000 per person (tuition and living expenses inclusive across 5 years). Before then I had little faith in the country but when this happened, I became weary of the country.

Thankfully, later that year, I got a full scholarship from University of Toronto for my Masters and PhD (6 years in total). Of those other 14 friends of mine, 13 of them have also moved since then - US, Canada, UK, New Zealand, Japan etc. Obviously we moved on but truth is, the life we have now was afforded to us by the Government of another country, many of which will seduce you with permanent residency and citizenship afterwards.

Any nation that shortchanges merit for anything else will fall. Nigeria has the brightest people, yet, we are where we are (in Osibanjo's voice).

I am not a northerner but I feel the decision by Buhari is right. So long as the northerners that were chosen are intelligent minds also. Not only the south have intelligent people they also reside in the north too. Every major group should be represented just for the sake of peace. Here you are wanting all southerners to be chosen for the sake of merit. Now if the president had chosen all northerners in the name of merit, what will be the reaction of every southerner? All southerners will be crying about how Buhari wants to northernize the country. Considering the nature of nigeria, the principle of federal character representation is what is still giving us a semblance of sanity and its currently more important than merit so long as all the candidates are of similar IQ. Jonathan that was trying to push all southerners for such scholarship is the one in the wrong as the principle of federal character is even enshrined in our constitution

You are sure that 5k to turn to 20k at the end of the day and by the end of 7days you will have close to 60 or 70k. In a month you will he kissing 250k with diligence, then you can scale up or diversify to another business you want. Bro/Sis there is no point looking for something that is as difficult as getting a good paying job in Nigeria.
To make it in life you have to drop pride. I can tell you by the time it's successful no one would remember. It's true that we didn't go through school to be selling food, ok now that we have finished and no job should we then starve to death? You gotta make a successful living for yourself and I can tell you many who had joined businesses have ended up regretting why they didn't join sooner. I am an example. You think making it from criminality is easy? Lol. There is no easy money on earth trust me. We have all been conditioned to think you finish school and become an employee, it shouldn't always be so. You can become an employer after school. A woman was said to be making atleast 300k per day selling Bole and fish in porthacourt. She isn't even 40 yet. There are many small businesses with no risks in Nigeria. A 30year old shouldn't stay at home complaining about lack of 10k or he joins criminals. 3 days in jail and you will prefer packing gutter and poop for a living just so u can have your freedom back. My opinion though.

Also considering the fact that the recruitment is not really a general field one but majorly for their refineries, so engineering and sciences graduates were heavily favored over other fields. 25 people per state isn't much at all. I'm sure there are atleast 500 people from each state expecting. So really it's clear. Even here not up to 50 people got or said they got.
