Best moments of Super Eagles were when we played jogo bonito. We were known for entertaining the spectators while still dominating the opponent.

Eagles of old days would outplay the opponent with scintillating skills. You would see fans joyfully shouting; eh! eh!! eh!!!, even while watching on TVs. Every Kid wanted to be Okocha, Maradona back then.

Football is deád.

Modern football ia trash. Gradually I am losing interest in football, coz I am tired of being bored with passes up and down. At times, I do go on youtube to watch clips of Delima, Jay Jay, Dinho and co to remind myself - there was a game called football.

Football ought to be an Art, but its now a Science. 1 + 1 must be 2. Bruno F. of Manchester United would play rubbish for full 90mins, but coz he had a goal or an assist, stats would make him star of the match.

Fvck the stats cos its killing football as well. Wingers can no longer beat defenders, small threat, they would pass back to defenders. Midfielders can no longer run with the ball or skillfully evading their opponents.

They should let football rest peacefully and rename the sport Tikiball.
Haaaa na real tikiball. They say football died in 1982. I guess what we are witnessing is the burial.

Watching clips of Zidane and the rest of his generation is my hobby. I use it to remind myself that football used to be jogo bonito

I pray managers who rebel against this choking football come and rescue the game.

I need to come in here because I have been reading your arguments towards modern and football of old.
You are pro football and want good football, but you prefer modern footballers over footballers of old? Does modern footballers play good football?
Do you only watch matches at all or you just watch important matches and use stats afterwards to judge?
See, I have an extra view DStv at home and a single view in my office and most times only football piques my interest. There are no matches that are shown on supersport channels, including ESPN. From the EPL to Championship, to La liga, to Seria A and most times, ESPN shows Eredivisie or Belgium league, they also Shows Scottish League but few times... I do watch all of these matches lives, as they are played on TV.
Modern football and footballers are trash, majority of them have zero football talent. They are very less talented but only trained to play the supposedly beautiful game. All modern football and footballers are known for are pass, pass, pass, run, run, cross, cross, and head, or sometimes, shoot and it's a goal. As good as Bellingham is at Madrid right now, he won't make a starting 11 of the same Madrid midfield of old that has Zidane, Beckham, Guti, even Solari.
Or you want to talk about modern EPL defenders that you will be running at with the ball, they won't stand and face you, rather they would be running back and when you gets to their 18 yard box, they will slide you and that's a penalty. Are these the defenders you rate over defenders of old?
Thank you Bro. They play it because they are trained to play it. With today's football, you don't need much natural talent. Any child can play football now if he's trained and he has determination.

I wanted to point that out but felt my comment will become too long.

Once Brazil goes back to playing multiple 10s they will be deadly..

In the past maybe from 2014 till 2022 I expected Brazil to always play Firmino as main 9 then Neymar, Coutinho or Douglas costa and Oscar or Willian or Ramires behind him.

But they didn't invite some of these players.
It's a pity they allowed the quarter final defeat at Spain 82 to affect their playing style. 82 is reputed to be the year football died.

Thiago was complaining about the intensity, acceleration and physicality (close in gap) has caused the loss of the magic and fantasy. That is precisely my point the players today are faster and better than in the past. So those flicks and tricks that we used to classify as better won't work today.

Finito.

Multiple 10s was used by Brazil from 1994 - 2010.

Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Juninho, Ricardinho, Ze Roberto, Robinho.

Italy also had Andrea Pirlo, Totti, De Rossi, Del Piero.

If you watched the All star charity match in 2004 you'll never compare 10s from the 1990s early 2000s to this de Bruyne generation..

the de Bruyne generation is an abomination...
Even Brazil has fallen for the mind numbing allure of machine football.

The context of the talk was how focus on pace, intensity and physicality has made magic and fantasy a less-prominent/alien characteristic.

"footballers do more but faster"
Do more what? Is it not that players are now focused on running...in/out of zones/channels. That is obviously why it follows with "There's no need to dribble because you run"

Lastly, the overall direction of the discourse by Thiago, which is a vent at modern football(MF), is a analysis of the impact of the dogmas of MF upon the soul of the game. This makes it very improbable that he is praising any of those dogmas.

To paraphrase:
"In today's game everyone is so concerned about running about so much so that no one spares to express themselves in their football"

Obviously not the whole 10 outfield players will/can be magical but it is draconian that MF is snuffing out the artist and no, it's not because it is harder. You know the examples of artists in current times. It is simply because coaches don't value it.

Argue it as a paradigm shift and not that whatever we have now is superior.
My respect at the bolded. You are sound.

So Thiago Alcantara was even criticizing modern football but TheGoodJoe in his sly manner cherry picked the guy's statement Just to win argument. This is very shameful and dishonest behavior.

Thiago feels football is losing its "magic" and "fantasy" as the game is becoming more physically intense and faster.

"It’s taken up a different pace, rhythm: more accelerated, more physical," he said.

"The figure of the No. 10 has almost disappeared. We see less magic, less fantasy. Footballers do more but faster. There’s no need to dribble because you run

Ashey just like me, Thiago even hates modern football but TheGoodJoe deliberately and duplicituously cropped out the first paragraph of his statement and made it look like Thiago was praising modern football. And I was dismissing the guy due to the dishonesty of TheGoodJoe not knowing Thiago is on my side. Unbelievable

It is more difficult now only because you are told there's no need to dribble BECAUSE you run ...i.e You are expected to run instead of dribble. You are expected to run instead of slowing down things (aka opportunity to turn)

Don't twist things. In this same "intense and speedy" football is where Neymars and Hazards made a name with their flair.

Dead that talk there is no space. There is only a dearth of players with flair and coaches who utilise them.
Absence of skillful players equals no space to dribble. Space wey we dey see all over the pitch. He talks as if the pitch is packed up like a junk yard

There’s no need to dribble because you run. Players are more developed in every sense. You lose that player who’s different, who ‘breathes’; the playmaker who was slower even if he had sublime technique doesn’t get the opportunity to turn.

Simple, it is more difficult today than it was before for creative players to shine due to the advancement of the game and development of players.
Running replaced dribbling and you say it's better. Are we watching athletics or football?

You got it totally wrong. All I talk or post is actually what I see. I only go to get people's comments because I know there are other people seeing what I am seeing.

Most I type is actually from my personal study of the game. If you want me to go indepth of what Thiago Alcantara said, I will, siting examples and matches.

What you will say is that I watch the game differently. I see the intensity. I see the development of the game. I see the tactical changes and growth. I appreciate development faster.

Goal contribution is a lame way of measuring players performance. Goal contribution is often criticized as a limited measure of player performance. For instance, Chukwueze's exceptional dribbling against Roma resulted in Giroud hitting the post, an opportunity that won't be counted as a goal contribution because his teammates failed to convert the chance. This scenario is not an isolated incident. Despite statistically favoring Pulisic over Chukwueze, those who watch the games closely recognize the nuances of their performances.
To illustrate, Zidane's impact on the 1998 World Cup final for France was monumental, almost single-handedly securing their victory. In contrast, his absence due to injury during the 2002 World Cup led to France's early exit in the group stage. In 2006, Zidane's performance nearly won France another World Cup, although his actions in the final overshadowed his brilliant play. His Champions League-winning goal is still revered as one of the best in history, highlighting his enduring influence on the game's biggest stages.

While players like De Bruyne are crucial for their teams, Belgium and Manchester City have shown they can perform without him in important games. De Bruyne has not affected any important game in history (Euros final, World Cup or Champions league). Eve, 20-year-old Foden has seamlessly adapted to his role without any issues.

Who takes Thiago Alcantara seriously? Which space is he talking about? lol
There is no time in history that football has suffered mediocre talent than now.Comparing the quality of teams from past eras like Ajax, Liverpool, Inter, Juventus, Milan, Lyon, Manchester United, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Porto, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Valencia, Roma, Chelsea, and even the Manchester City of the past to present teams reveals a stark difference in talent! Mediocrity has taken over!
These are the kind of people who will destroy Michelangelo's masterpieces or the Benin artefacts without compunction. They will look at the Mona Lisa and say to hell, burn it.

A Brazilian guy on X basically said the bolded albeit with national teams. He said teams like Brazil, Italy, France, Netherlands, Portugal, Argentina had better players than today.

But no, today's football is intense therefore you are wrong.

That is an unrealistic point when it concerns me. When it comes to direct contributions it is Kevin De Bruyne. When it comes to eye appealing and effective magic, it is Zidane.

When it comes to selection, it is preference. I prefer KDB to Zidane if I was to pick one. You might prefer Zidane to KDB. I don't think you can say this is better but instead you look at attributes they offer.
This one don reduce Zidane to a mere trickster and elevate De Bruyne to an all time great. Ridiculous
